Not me - as at the time of this reply, the site was taking too long to load. You would think that for a country rich in oil, they would devote more money to bandwidth grin

I did c a screenshot of it and based on that, I will repeat what I just said above wink - for the money they make, u wd expect a better blog cool

U may also want to check out www.download.com . Most of the stuff on there might be free for 30 days, but at least it is better than nothing. I know they hv homesite on there.

Microsoft and Macromedia may also have trial versions of frontpage (I know u said no frontpage but thought I should throw it out there for others wink) and dreamweaver respectively on their websites.

I hope this helps.
WebmastersAnalysis Of Flash On Akwa Ibom State Government's Website by my2cents(op): 2:35am On Aug 13, 2006
Everytime OBJ visits AKS, the "webmasters" of the govt website make it a point of duty to show off their "skills" by putting up some flash welcoming baba, rather than, in my opinion, focusing on making the site better. I won't even bother mentioning that the site doesn't load in Firefox (FF). Oops, I think I just did grin

Well, for OBJ's latest visit, the "webmasters" have outdone themselves. Check it out:
http://www.akwaibomstategov.com/ (and just to be sure, did I mention the site doesn't load in FF? cool)

I mean they've put in everything including the kitchen sink - tweening, fading, flying, and exploding wink The kicker? I ran it through a site analyzer to check the size of the flash and here is what I got:

The size of this web page (2546503 bytes) has exceeded the maximum size of 1000000 bytes.
I bet they are making millions in salary a year to produce junk like this - WTF!! WTH!! cool cool

Fellow web developers/designers, comments please grin

LOL

Bush will come to georgia and the only reason it is announced in advance is so that pple will know how to avoid rush hour traffic congestion grin

From someone who just arrived from AKS, I hear roads have been rebuilt and buildings refurbished. I hope it's because they were needed and not cos the prez was in town.

As for ALSCON, from the time it was built, I hear the place has done nothing but pollute the area further and women in the area "work" for the white men who would work there. What we need as far as that and other projects is less govt and more private involvement.

Here's to a better Akwa Ibom State sha grin

Your site didn't open in Firefox (FF). It says I need a plugin. Granted I know how to get a plugin, you may want to look into this as the %age of FF users is rising and you never know, perhaps your best customers could be those using FF wink

Just a thought grin
BusinessRe: Buffet Business In Nigeria by my2cents(op): 3:41pm On Aug 12, 2006
Let us also not forget some of the tricks of the trade employed by buffets at least in the states, one of which is making it so cold that you are forced to leave early or risk freezing to death (of course I and my buddies used to counter this by wearing thick jackets even on the hottest summer days LOL)

I beg to differ. There are those pple with natural dreadlocks, tattered cloths and yellow teeth who walk around talking to themselves. I remember one from childhood who stopped by the stream i was in, dipped his cup into it, scooped water plus sand and drank it all down. Wd u call them beggars? Sure they are mad, but u think they have a place to stay at night, especially the woman who end up sleeping with some rich guy as condition of riches?

Just wondering.

As the bible has stated - false prophets shall arise.

Take heed and read stuff like this for its entertainment value. The sorry part is that some pple will read this prophecy, to c the guy at night like Nicodemus and immediate join his church, thus helping swell his coffers LOL

I really feel u man. Unfortunately, I forgot that Nigeria doesn't follow the basic laws of economics LOL

We will have 2 phones on our hips and yet no car or house. We will drop N5000 on a plate of food that we will excrete and egest after 6 hours, rather than save it for our kids after we die.

Beats me man grin

again, how many times do u go to buffet at N5000 in say, a week? at N200, it is possible that the person will spend more often. I think it is easier to drop N200 5 times than N5000 once. Again the concept of the "long tail" is pretty new. Not all are able to grasp it at this point. Amazon is one of the few companies utilizing it.

As for the thread, I did some digging and it turns out I was the original author of the post grin https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-12127.0.html

I shall meet you there my friend

zappking/twinkle, sorry for going off-topic, but I just have to reply one more time wink besides, there has been a thread on buffets on NL already grin

Zebudaya, u and i will just have to agree to disagree. You prefer catering to the upper-class and the common man who "can afford it". I choose to cater exclusively to the common man. Y? cos a collection of the common man wd anyday beat the money spent by the upper class. Besides, if the upper-class are as "upper" as they proclaim, then again I repeat:

1) They shdnt go to buffets. They shd watch their diets cos they can afford to spend the money on healthy foods

2) They wouldn't b visiting buffets frequently. If this were to happen, then such buffets wouldnt be making that much money anyways, cos pple wdnt visit them that often. Whereas nwannem would probably go every day.

Am just saying. Ok, no more offpoint from me grin

Seeing your sig file says "atl", I am sure you will understand what i mean by this - what u r saying is like those who say "u cant buy a house without credit, yet you need credit to buy a house " or "you cant get this job without 2 years experience, yet if you have never worked, how do you get the experience?". How will he learn if you are not willing to teach him? R u advocating he go do it with someone else, then come back to you? That he teach himself solo?

Unless its a one-night stand, I think if u really loved the guy, u would teach him. Worst-case, there are other ways to make u scream, if u know what i mean cool

As I tell pple coming from there on student visas - if they are rich enough to have the yearly deposit in their accounts b4 coming here, they have no business working wink They should just come here to study, including summer semesters as 2 summer school sessions equal one school year which implies they can get out of school one year earlier.

By the way, from my experience living in Georgia, I know pple who have worked (and gotten paid) outside of the school campus and took summers off atimes. Could b a difference b/w states? I dunno, just saying cool
EducationRe: Between American And British Universities by my2cents(m): 11:07pm On Aug 10, 2006
Hmmm,

I think tis best to hear from someone who has had a master's firsthand or someone who has had the opportunity to perhaps do like a program where they get to school partly in the US and UK, rather than make statements based on prejudice as a result of where one is right now.

Personally, I would say, even if the person went to school in Cotonou, it wouldn't matter to me as an employer. What I want is quality. A person may have attended harvard or oxford (I blv in the realm of things, those 2 schools are equivalent in terms of reputation, though I cd b wrong wink) or UNN, to me at the end of the day, it boils down to what you bring to the table. I say this cos I have been in situations where I have competed for the same job as someone who attended an ivy league school but yet came out on top.

It's all in how you carry yourself, how you relate to pple, what you bring to the table. Then again, I am not in Naija, a country where I know status and big names are the order of the day ("My name is Engr Chief Doctor okoro nwafor. I obtained my "mastas" from oxford and phD from Harvard. I am well-travelled" LOL).

Ideally, where u study shdnt be an issue. Realistically though, I would have to go for UK, given similarities b/w the 2 countries' educational systems and the wrong stereotype that pple in america end up losing all their morals and culture upon de-planing in the US.
Christianity EtcRe: All Sins Are Equal? by my2cents(m): 11:00pm On Aug 10, 2006
Trust naija LOL - the same pple who used a candle-filled cup to cheat a customer out of a full cup of garri is the same one who is an elder at church, leading prayer sessions grin Letz face it folks, wen it comes to bible, though we don't live the best of lives, we can quote it from genesis to revelation, including the apocrypha LOL

Anyways, getting back on point, sins aren't equal. You have to understand though that as a christian, either you sin or you don't sin. Obviously, anyone who says they don't sin is a hypocrite ("for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God"wink. That leads to my next point: Once you have sinned, just like a person stealing 5 kobo vs N5million, there are grades of sin. There are those against the flesh and those against the spirit. The latter will not be forgiven. I won't preach to the choir by repeating the scriptures quoted above.

'Nuff said grin
BusinessRe: Would Shelters In Nigeria Make a Difference to the Community? by my2cents(m): 10:49pm On Aug 10, 2006
Zebudaya grin

Any rich man who goes to buffet has some problems. It is for the masses, not the guy who can afford to eat at the finest restaurants. At least thatz how i c it. I am aware of the buffets in naija, but based on location: are those the only places in naija? Based on price: who are you trying to cater to - the top echelon or the many pple "at the bottom" whose combined biz could indeed overtake that of the pple it is aimed for? Tis the concept of "The Long Tail" which is a biz concept that is picking up steam these days.

I get ur point o, don't get me wrong, but it is high time certain biz catered to "the common man" there. Aren't they the real Nigerians? wink
Car TalkRe: Lagos State Government Banned Okada Transportation. by my2cents(m): 10:45pm On Aug 10, 2006
As crazy as it sounds, when I am there, I prefer taking Okada over sitting in b/w pple, some of which are so sweaty and dirty that upon exiting the cab, u smell like the combined scents of crayfish, okpoloko and that of a person who may not have bathed for days LOL

Y do I take public trans in naija some of u may ask? cos I like it grin After driving in my own a/c'd car, windows up, music playing, etc, I feel boxed in. I just wanna b one "with nature", u know what i mean? wink

Bottomline, dangerous or not, it should be up to the individual to decide whether or not they want to ride Okada, not the government. When I get on one, I have made the conscious decision to do so and assume the risk of being robbed or killed. B4 Okada? I would imagine the roads back then could accomodate all the cars at the time and pple didnt decide to deviate from the city plan (where there was one) and build houses in every nook and cranny. Besides, back then some pple could actually afford a car of their own or not be too lazy to go to wherever on foot.

Give the okada man a break jo cool Some or many may be bad, but for the most part, they just wanna put food in their familyz plates cool
BusinessRe: Would Shelters In Nigeria Make a Difference to the Community? by my2cents(m): 10:28pm On Aug 10, 2006
It depends - I believe in "Give a man a fish and he will come back for more but show a man how to fish and he won't return after that day (abi na so dem dey talk am?)"

Some pple, as a very wise man once told me don't need help. U provide the shelter and they end up over-staying, to the detriment of those who really need the help. Besides, and I know Seun will love to hear this wink, if government decides to get into the biz of providing homeless shelters, what is next and how many could they possibly build? To me it's the equivalent of someone who decides to start a buffet biz in naija - the person would be setting themselves up for failure.

What wd I do instead? Thanks for asking cool - I would provide the shelter but inmates would only stay under the condition of getting a job after a given period. Of course, I would be actively involved in making sure they get a job via necessary training, setting up and inviting companies to say, a job fair, etc.

It's a double-edged sword folks - damned if you do and damned if you don't. That being said, it is govt's (and I know Seun will turn around and hate me for this grin) to cater to its citizenry. After all, where there is no form of hope for those who need it, restlessness and anarchy usually set in. The govt wd certainly not want that grin
ProgrammingRe: Learning Java Without Tears by my2cents(m): 10:17pm On Aug 10, 2006
It's always good to learn something using the bare basics. That way, any "upgrades" end up being a plus. For example, I started web dev during the "dark ages". For the longest, I used notepad. I remember when IDEs became the in-thing. When asked at an interview what I used, when I told them notepad, the expression on their faces was like shocked shocked

For the "notepad-like" IDEs, coding in those is okay by me. But when you get to (at least in my field) IDEs like dreamweaver, frontpage et al, I would strongly recommend against it. You really need to know how things come together, as opposed to producing bloated code, half of which even you as the author don't understand. In particular, wherever I have worked, any mention of graphical IDEs results in such resumes being tossed directly into the dust bin grin
CareerRe: How Healthy Is Office Romance? by my2cents(m): 10:12pm On Aug 10, 2006
It depends - if u 2 are pretty much peers at work, i c no problem with it. On the other hand, if one is the boss, then it can get sticky.

From personal experience, it all depends on how you approach it. Me? I tell the woman upfront that it is not leading to a relationship. It's just "doing whatever, whenever". I have never had any rejections. In the end, it fizzles out and we move on, still being friends grin

Then again, thatz my experience. What is good for the goose may not always be whatz good for the gander,
eee saaaaaay! he he
