I read everything,.... I'm an employee also.
I work on Saturdays sometimes too, and what I do on most Saturdays are not my core duties at all but I have to be there because it is an official event.
If there is any reason why OP can't make it on a particular day, then reasons must be given before the day and permission granted.
But OP decided not to attend the event, and official event, without any permission , that is mighty wrong sir/ma.

We love the bandwagon mentality and will always like to play victim. I believe the exercise session is no done on weekly basis, and it came from a resolution of a meeting held which you were part of or aware of.
If so, you deserve not just the query but any punishment that goes with it.
You could given a tenable excuse for your absence at at the said exercise you decided to not to go without officially informing anyone. Excuses of transportation fare and insecurity are not tenable, nor even the poor pay.
