michlins: all these stress and extra resources when you can simply use angle bars instead of pipes?
I thought the purpose of this thread is to save and cut cost of building houses. Why create extra problems and find a solution just to prove that you are a professional builder.
"If it's not broken, don't fix it".......... Peter Obi
You’ve made your point bro and I understand you perfectly.
No one uses angle iron to make slats. Check online and see what we are talking about.
If the specification is pipe, don’t recommend angle iron just because you can’t make it work like others.
This is exactly the typical “this is how we do it naija” mindset we are talking about.
michlins: yes maybe the time frame I gave is short and this gate has surpassed it. That doesn't disqualify my statement. Btw, how many people know treated and non treated pipes. Like in this thread of professionals, how many people can differentiate between the two
Like I said earlier, “In Nigeria, there’s always a problem for every solution” and the bolded part above is a typical example.
If people know a well painted car is better than one without good painting, why do we assume they don’t know how to treat their steel works. Even if they do not, why are those who are knowledgeable in that space not teaching them what to do to make their gates/doors etc last longer.
Any pipe in the market can be used for your project. Treating pipes is not rocket science. You just need to understand how to maintain it.
- use gasket rubber/rubber feet to protect your pipe from scratches - seal up openings - coat it very well - avoid scratches and repaint immediately you notice one. - sand off oily surface on black pipes as it prevents paint from adhering. - always clean your gates/pipes etc.
Armed with the information that most homeowners/clients don’t know the difference, welders always go for the cheapest materials in order to maximize their gain. Rust inhibitors doesn’t cost much but only few welders apply it on their job.
Treating pipes is very easy if we chose to do things right.
_________ Pic 1 - Rubber feet for chair leg (sold less than 50 - 100 naira). It’s not for fashion but to prevent scratches that causes rust.
__________ Michilins how does “your statement” solve or provide a solution for the people in here. I’m sure you’ll agree that do not need to know it ALL, we need to teach them what they need to know. Someone just show us how to estimate number of paint drums required per room. He has solved a problem. It’s different from someone asking “How many people know how to calculate number of paint required to paint a room?”
GoodFaith: My brother why l said we all is because of all our action and inaction We "the people fail to stand up and fight No water No light No road No hospitals' from messenger to CEO All levels of anything you do -people are there to make it harder for all of us
As some group are pumping up the tyre, there’s another group deflating it.
Yesterday, I got 2 trailer loads of StoneDust delivered to my new project site at 70k for 29.75ton and 32.18tons respectively. The seller (also a friend in biz) told me he’d be charging extra N5k per truck as his running cost which I gladly paid without worries.
There are good people here but the truth is cheating/corruption is in our gene.
Drdreluv: I want to use this medium to thank Mr Ayyub Aka money121 I have never met him one on one I paid and he delivered my stone cotted to ibadan same day May God Almighty Bless u and enlarge ur coast.... I have never doubt him for once, keep the wonderful job up I am so sure & know ur are going place(s)...thanks chairman God Bless u
Thanks for the positive feedback. More cement and mortar to your project.
EgunMogaji2: Do you live in Nigeria? I ask this because for some reason the average Nigerian that you’ll deal with will continuously persuade you to just do as they do here and it becomes tiring.
1) In my opinion concrete countertop offers a very unique alternative that is still intriguing to me. The issue is the product support. Thankfully more folks like Brabus are using marine wood because you will need that to come up with crisp quality. I intend to just use plywood. All the materials you’ll need are readily available.
2) If left to me I would love to have polished concrete floor. I’m yet to find any outfit that’ll do inside work though. For some reason they just like outside flooring which some of them do fantastically.
I’ll add a video from someone in Ghana that moved from the UK. He did a concrete counter top. I’ll add a link.
In Nigeria, there’s always a problem for every solution.
JustCryptos: To the gurus in the house... I have a few questions.
1. What's your take on concrete countertops as opposed to HDF, MDF, or marble.
2. Is concrete flooring/polishing a cheaper alternative to tiling?
For some context, once I am through with plastering, I am seriously considering a lot of DIY for the remaining part of the house, particularly cabinets, wardrobes, chairs, and flooring.

For creative minds only, DIY concrete and wood countertop idea.
true2home: Its ok IF and i say again IF the builder has imbedded the reinforcement in the CMU. But looking at other features of the structure, this person don't have a clue of structures at all. By pure observation, the build is missing a Column!!!
It’s not a biggie if he’s using bond beam block which I doubt.
One4me: Thank you Sir. I am sworn to helping as many people here as l can, with the ideas l have, most of which are from this thread and good people like you that shared it freely with us. My conscience is clear that l have tried.
I pray that what happened in 2014 do not repeat itself again.
Do “naija oversabi homeowners” ever listen?
________ Limitless choice sounds delightful in theory. But in most work situations, endless options clog the drain. Homeowners should learn to set clearer goals and avoid analysis paralysis by setting cut-off points and sticking to it.
No be everything you’d DIY!
______ In my whole life, I’ve never set out to buy a vehicle by myself. I always ask professionals to do it for me. I can still count nothing less than 14 to my name.
The reason I always ignore most Nairaland requests is simply because a lot of people don’t know their limit. Even a master satisficer (master pleaser) will falter when worn down by too many choices.
Pls pause, infact STOP! and re-access cos you're getting it all muddled up.
You don't have structural plan yet you've been told you need a pile and pile is to prevent sinking.
Pls do a soil test, followed by a structural plan, before proceeding.
If indeed you need a pile (which your soil test will reveal), then this is no more a standard bungalow that usually doesn't require a structural plan and doesn't qualify anymore as kobokobo.
While all your points may turn out to be correct, it should be guided by technical facts and not "them-say".
michlins: yes maybe the time frame I gave is short and this gate has surpassed it. That doesn't disqualify my statement. Btw, how many people know treated and non treated pipes. Like in this thread of professionals, how many people can differentiate between the two
The only reason I’ll do angle iron over pipes is cos of gravity pull and that means introducing a third hinge at the middle of the gate to reduce the total force on the upper hinge, making it less likely to deform enough to drag the gate on the ground.
For slat designs, good welding and weather seal will keep your gate safe and solid for years.
_____ The slats in the pic below are low gauge pipes but they were sealed at both ends and are painted with a roller instead of being sprayed. You know that also make a difference. The thicker the coating of your paint the better for pipes.
michlins: give or take five years and the pipes will start developing issues. My experience with working with pipes is how I got to know this. If you like, carry 5mm pipe put,it will not last as long as 5mm angle iron. That's why if I use pipe anywhere on gate, I open the tail end of the pipe to constantly drain it if water. If not, the owner of the gate will call you after a few years to come and fix one or two things
I agree pipes do react to weather element when it’s not well treated.
Below is an 8 year old gate. Still solid like new without any visible sign of defect.
________ If anyone know TCC Ogere on Lagos/Ibadan expressway, the gate on that property is more than 2 decades old without any visible sign of defect.
megacontrol: ne3t, rotech77 ... do you have formwork for rentals? pls post your rental rates here and qty for this which is scheduled to start in 2-3 wks time.
Pls refer to the floor plan and foundation height provided.
Steel shutters go between 1,200 - 1,800 per sqm.
On-site measurement will be required to give final estimate.
_______ My marine boards aren’t available right now until I fully move back to Lekki axis.
michlins: it's called 3" by 1½". Next time, use angle bar for the frames. Pipes are prone to rusting quickly no matter the guage. Let me guess, the pipe used is 1.5mm thick. Same pipe used in making doors but remember this gate will be under the weather both rain and sun. The expansion of the steel in the day and contraction in the night due to change in weather will definitely affect it's durability.
Best to use at least 4mm angle bar for the framing especially the part that goes to the pillar because it carries the weight of the whole gate then use 1.5mm 2 by 1 for the slats to ensure durability.
My 2cents
Who propounded this theorem? How long will it take before such gates start failing?
Will the same happen to gates painted with weather resistant paints or metallic paints?
neduboo: Please how many rods will be enough for this project. I met a welder and he gave me the following list of no of rods for this 4 Bedroom bungalow. But the list looks much.
His list include :
2 tonne of 16mm 2 tonne of 12mm 1 tonn of 10mm
1/4 of the quantity above should be more than enough.
_______ 1 length of 16mm iron rod will complete one column (pillar)
megacontrol: Sorry man, i didn't see this on time. i got it done for about 30k. For next time, as we have such needs often in the axis, can you say how big your truck is? a picture perhaps?
I have saved your number anyways. thanks
Let me guess “Jaytime Dyna” or “Jaytime Truck Nairaland”
jeffdaniel: Thanks n3xt. No, i haven't thought of that. If it is economical, why not. Any link to read more about that or anyone that I can talk to for rentals?
Rotecch77 sure have. I have too (about 36m) but not in Lagos at moment.
Rotecch77 used it in one of his project here. I believe it’s more economical and faster than using woods.
rotecch77: At egun baba ijebu; our father in ijebu ode. Actually we need to step up our construction methodology.. At time the things dey tire me. At time you will have good concept couple with critical path analysis programming of the job but workers will still Bleep you off after much payment to there pocket actually this happens in finishing. That is the reason why I like carcass work mostly. But as a builder I need to do all, that is What I know to do both in theory and practical. My passion for building is second to non
