jeffdaniel: Good morning my wonderful people, am at the point of doing concrete parapet and roof carcass. The first question is, is it true that the 12ft(3.6m) hardwood planks are not the true length, that's what am using for my calculations but my carpenter is saying the lengths are shorten now adays, and what are the true lengths of hardwood planks in Lagos and surroundings.
To minimize cost, what's the best way getting the concrete parapet and roof carcass done, since am not on ground to get somethings done myself.
Thank you for your responses. Have you considered using steel mold for your concrete parapet instead of woods? For roof carcass, I’d suggest you buy from Lagos in order to minimize cost or get a reliable person to help you source from other state and deliver to your site. You can get standard wood in Lagos a little more expensive though. |

Abbeyb1ack: Like have spent alot on this project and its not even moving
I heard pple say you need a certain amount to get to roofing stage of a 3 bedroom
Bt av spent more dan that The man supplying me blocks even had to call me that the material my engineer is using is lik a waste
That the project would hav gone far that the present stage
I don tired o Change tack. A lot of project managers only know how to buy, what to buy and where to buy. They don’t know how to save, what to save on and areas not to bat an eyelid. I’m sorry to say this but “Smart people rent formwork. They don’t get tricked into buying planks because they can reuse it in other stages.” |

rotecch77: I like that your last statement bro “ A well plastered wall”
If it’s regular then we will be talk of 2 bags of flex or more 1950*2 or *3
If it’s floor then it’s no go area ... higher cost ”If it’s abnormal German Floor...” However, if it’s a well laid floor supervised by Nairaland Engineer Egunmogaji2 to international standard, Supafix is far more cheaper to use than cement. ______ Lafarge is also planning to introduce some new product into the market (engineered plaster sand, mortar, pre-mixed concrete etc). Things are getting better. Las las, we go dey alright. |

rotecch77: I understand you clearly bro, as I said I’m not here to markdown the product at all.
The purpose is to see how we can make some impossibility to possible by reducing cost drastically without much time wasted. Bcs time is money too. They are many product before lafarge and many will still come again. But the bottom line is it’s not cheaper to use. More so it’s best practice to lay tiles with sand, not just local practice. It’s in building tech text book and I practice it in sch then which was supervised by the lecturer. With mixture ratio of 1:3
So it’s not only Nigeria method as you stated. But new innovation is what we lack here In Nigeria, and it’s simple to apply this superflex But it not cheaper to OPC cement according to the percentage of structure in Nigeria
40kg of superflex is 4K plus 50kg of cement is 3k plus Sand 50kg N300 By my understanding, we are only paying more for tiling because of shabby flooring job done by our builders. If it’s done right, you don’t have to spend fortune to lay tiles. 4 x 20kg bag of Supafix (sold at a little less than 8,000) will cover a standard bathroom wall of 4 x 10ft (provided you have a straight wall). I’m not sure my tiler has ever asked me to bring just 3 bags of cement to do tiling of a 4 x 10 bathroom. By default, our mind has been pre-configured to believe that tiling requires a lot of cement. In fact, I do tell my clients tiling is the most expensive stage in building. |

zuraking: okay. Make I reason am if it's more economical than normal cement. If you’re buying 50kg Elephant Cement which can cover 4sqm at 3,000 and you’re buying 20kg Supafix Tile Adhesive which covers 5sqm at 1,950, which one do you think is cheaper? Use a well plastered bathroom wall as a case study |

You do not need cement mortar or o level I never surface when using Supafix. You can use the adhesive to level out uneven surface a day before installing your tiles.
We also tried this during the demonstration.

rotecch77: There product is nice. But I’m not saying this to devalue there product but to elaborate The process more to the end users. In all honesty the superflex can’t save you money to normal OPC cement.
Bcs 95pec structure in Nigeria are not well leveled both wall and floor All of them required leveling both wall and floor
The only area you can get good leveling is when you are tiling on EXISTING TILES or PLYWOOD. These surface will only required tiny thickness of superflex like 1-3mm, with this you can get 5m area covered with 1 bag of superflex 20kg.
But in all others wall you will need about 8-12mm thickness to get some of this wall to normal level What does this mean: very simple and the answer is you will need more superflex to achieve this. This is where you get it NOT cheaper to use.
But in terms of marble work on top of kitchen casted slab, or wall marble work go for it bcs of its nature(gummy).
But if you can straighten your wall or floor before application of the superflex you are good to go. But remember you are using normal cement and sand to do this which is another cost also.
In conclusion it’s not cheaper to use here in Nigeria in term of saving cost.
This is my practical experience on it for some years back.
You can try your Not bibeli Baba, whether you have leveled floor or not, you cannot use only cement to install tiles on floors. You’ll still need some sand That’s a negative on OPC. Moreso, demanding straight walls and leveled floors from our contractors shouldn’t be a rocket science if it can be achieved elsewhere. Finally, it’s only here we use OPC to install tiles. By standard, tiles installation are done with adhesive. Am I right or wrong? That 1m people are doing it wrong doesn’t make it right. Even if the wall is terrible, is it that most of our tilers don’t know about backer boards. These stuffs and solutions are out there for years. I think we are just stuck with conventional approach. _____ In another news, I just picked up 12 bags for a 30sqm job. I’d share pictures later. |

omanzo02: In another news, don't forget to ask about what's happening to critical cement issues on behalf of nairaland and when to expect stability. We asked and we were told the situation will normalize soon. I think demand for cement only went higher post-covid and it was a big surprise to the Channel Partners (CP) Supafix will solve one part of the problem and it’s more economical. The only issue is homeowners/developers need to demand more quality job from builders/engineers alike. Straight walls and flat slabs |

zuraking: I need clarification on this supafix.
Can I use it for floor tiles without screeding with sharp sand and cement after German floor?
Can we use it for tiles ONLY or it has other usage?
50 bags minimum order is for people building duplex or massive 4-5 bedroom bungalow na if 1 bag will cover 5sqm. what about we the Kobo Bobo small hut owners? It is for tiles ONLY (indoor application and swimming pools). It’ll work for external application but it is not recommended. You can only use C2 class for external tiles (high rise buildings). Let me know the quantity you want. We can always work it out. #metoo I’m a member of small hut owner’s association. |

With Supafix, you can hardly remove the tiles 1 min after installation.
European standard of adhesive
C0 C1 C2
C0 and C1 are for internal use only. C2 is for external use. Lafarge C02 will be ready by next year.
Within 1 hour after applying the adhesive you have to break the tiles.
You can start tiling from up down. It won’t slide or move when installed.

#Supafix Update
Supafix is a C1 grade of adhesive.
Gum seller in the local market just call it gum not adhesive. They don’t tell you whether it is C1 or C2 class of adhesive.
Add 4 liters of water to the 20kg cement.
Straight wall will cover minimum of 5sqm (more cheaper and stronger than regular cement)
You don’t need to soak you tiles in water. It sticks in 1 hour.
If you’re a DIYer, you may not need a tiler. |
