stane007: Nigerian celebrity writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has been awarded the PEN Pinter Prize 2018 for her “refusal to be deterred or detained by the categories of others”.
The annual prize is given annually to a writer from Britain, the Republic of Ireland or the Commonwealth who, in the words of Harold Pinter’s Nobel speech, casts an "unflinching, unswerving" gaze upon the world, and shows a "fierce intellectual determination … to define the real truth of our lives and our societies".
Praised by the judges for being “sophisticated beyond measure in her understanding of gender, race and global inequality”, Adichie will collect the accolade at a public ceremony at the British Library in October, where she will deliver an address and also announce her co-winner, the International Writer of Courage 2018, selected from a shortlist of international cases supported by English PEN.
This year’s judges, who named Chimamanda Adichie the winner of the prize, were President of English PEN Philippe Sands, historian, biographer and widow of Harold Pinter Antonia Fraser, writer and critic Alex Clark, poet, playwright and performer Inua Ellams, and chair of Judges and chair of trustees for English PEN Maureen Freely.
Freely said of Adichie, the winner of the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize, the Orange Prize, and the US National Book Critics Circle Award: “In this age of the privatised, marketised self, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is the exception who defies the rule. In her gorgeous fictions, but just as much in her TED talks and essays, she refuses to be deterred or detained by the categories of others. Sophisticated beyond measure in her understanding of gender, race, and global inequality, she guides us through the revolving doors of identity politics, liberating us all.”
Byatt, director of English PEN, said Adichie’s writing and activism showed us what is important in the world, calling her "a very worthy winner of this extraordinary prize", to which Fraser, Harold Pinter’s widow, added: "Not only is Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie a brilliant, compelling writer but she embodies in herself those qualities of courage and outspokenness which Harold much admired.”
Adichie commented: “I admired Harold Pinter's talent, his courage, his lucid dedication to telling his truth, and I am honoured to be given an award in his name.”
Adichie will be awarded the prize on 9 October, when she will also announce her co-winner, the 2018 International Writer of Courage.

Politics › Re: BREAKING: Another Ex-nigerian Governor Joshua Dariye Convicted Of Fraud by nabegibeg: 3:11pm On Jun 12, 2018 |
higherpower: Few weeks after a former Taraba governor, Jolly Nyame, was jailed 14 years for fraud, the Federal Capital Territory High Court has found former Plateau State governor, Joshua Dariye, guilty of fraud.
Mr Dariye was charged for allegedly diverting N1. 161.9 billion while he served as governor of the North-central state.
He was brought to court on a 23-count charge for the alleged offence by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC in 2007.
Although Mr Dariye’s lawyer, Kanu Agabi, questioned the authenticity of evidence adduced in court against his client, the court said the evidences clearly indicate a case of diversion.
The judge, Adebukola Banjoko, found him guilty of diverting funds to the Peoples Democratic Party in the state among other groups.
Mrs Banjoko who was still reading the judgement at the time of this report found Mr Dariye guilty of counts 1, 2, 4, and 7.
The counts relate to the diversion of N80 million to the PDP, N100 million to a company, Marine flow and other sums through the All State Bank.
The same judge jailed Mr Nyame.
BACKGROUND Mr Dariye, a serving senator, was first elected governor of the state in 1999 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.
He was re-elected in 2003, but later impeached by the state’s house of assembly in November 2006.
Following judgements of the Appeal and Supreme Courts nullifying his impeachment however, Mr Dariye was ordered to complete his tenure in 2007.
The prosecution, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, arraigned the defendant on a 21-count for the alleged offence shortly after the expiration of his tenure in May 2007.
According to the anti-graft agency, Mr Dariye used his office to siphon money out of the country, through various accounts.
Mr Dariye fought a seemingly endless battle to prevent his trial, from the lower court to the Supreme Court.
Ahead of his arraignment in 2007, Mr Dariye challenged the competence of the charges against him, but failed at the trial court.
Subsequently the ex-governor approached the Court of Appeal where he also failed in his attempt to stop the trial.
Mr Dariye who had secured an order for the suspension of his trial at the lower court, also proceeded to the Supreme Court with his appeal. He was, however, made to continue the trial following an order of the apex court in 2015, after stalling the case for over seven years.
The former governor controversially employed the services of a former Attorney General of the federation, Kanu Agabi, who headed Nigeria’s justice ministry when the charge against the defendant was first brought.
He is currently a senator on the platform of Nigeria’s ruling party, APC, to which he decamped in 2016. He was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.
The judge, Olasumbo Banjoko, slated Tuesday for judgement after entertaining the final address of counsel.

JohnspeakU: Johnspeak Uwangue: How Not To Get Sacked From Your Workplace
By Johnspeak Uwangue (Human Development Consultant, Talent Manager and Coach)
With the fast rise in the rate of unemployment and poverty, it has become imperative for every employees to secure their jobs no matter how insignificant the job may seem. There are thousands of Unemployed who are fasting and praying, visiting one deliverance house to another just to get a job like yours. As enticing as entrepreneurship is, most African entrepreneurs are regretting quitting their jobs.
Life is like a game of card and whether you are aware or not, you are playing the game. Most people who are not experiencing growth in their lives or business are those who don't know how to play the game so also it is in the workplace. Your degree might get you a good job but it may not determine if you will stay long in your job. Today, I want to share with you just five tips that you can use to secure your job or position for as long as you want.
- Loyalty The loyalty of some employees either to the owner of the company, the head of their department, the wife/husband/boyfriend or girlfriend of their boss etc is the reason why they still have their jobs. You may think they are being foolish, but their foolishness is why they still have a job. Even if you are naturally proud, wisdom demands you fake loyalty until you have been able to gather enough money or experience or contact to move forward. It won't be a bad idea if you keep telling you boss how loyal you are. Humans are naturally selfish, so, no one will lift up another man if they don't believe that they can control you.
- Keep Your Mouth Shut People who always want to say it as they saw it or as they are feeling always die before their time. You might be loyal to your bosses but your mouth can betray your loyalty. If you want to keep your job you must be careful how you talk whether in public or private. Recently, a top editor in a top organization in Nigeria allowed his mouth to put him in trouble. Don't talk bad about your superiors to your colleagues because you don't know who was planted in the company to report what you said. Never you allow your mouth to take away food from your mouth.
- Competency Competency is a card you need to play in order to secure your job forever. You need to develop yourself until no one in your organization is as competent as you in your field. People will always need people who have what they need. Haven't you wondered why some ladies still stick to their abusive partners? He may have character flaws but he may be too good in the other room to let go (this is not my handwriting o!).
- Learn To Play The Workplace Politics Well I have written a whole writeup on workplace politics before and I don't intend to repeat it here. Because of God let me explain a little. Politics is not just about political offices, it has now entered into every organizations and institutions. For you to be able to secure your job you must understand the various politics at play in workplaces. Like, the politics of numbers, the politics of institutions, the politics of relationship etc.
- Have Plans In Place Inasmuch as this writeup is about securing your job, I also believe that you should have an exit plan. Having a realistic exit plan will give you confidence in your job. Most people will ride on you and even withhold your salary if they know that you don't have a choice. Your confidence will make them think otherwise. Please, don't be arrogant or overly confident when you don't have an exit plan otherwise, you will just lose your job for nothing.
Succeed You Must

Ekiti360: The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday presented its first witness in the ongoing trial of Nanle Dariye, son of former Plateau State Governor, Joshua Dariye.
He is standing trial on a 6-count charge of money laundering to the tune of N1.5billion before Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court, Abuja.
The suit filed with charge no. FHC/ABJ/CR/19/2018 has Dariye as first defendant.
The second defendant is Apartment le Paradis, a hotel where he was director.
Counsel to the EFCC, George Adebola presented his first witness, PW1 Emem Kongkor, who introduced herself as an operative of the anti-graft agency and Team Leader “Team A” of the Inspection and Enforcement Unit of the Special Control Unit Against Money Laundering, SCUML.
“SCUML has the mandate to register, monitor and regulate the activities of designated non-financial institutions, DNFIs. Section 25 of the Money Laundering Act 2011 (as amended) defines DNFIs to include mechanized farming, hotels, casinos, supermarkets and other small-scale businesses”, he said.
According to Ms Kongkor, “Section 10 of the Money Laundering Act 2011 (as amended) mandates all DNFIs to report in writing every single lodgements or transfer that exceeds the threshold of N5million or its equivalent for individual accounts and N10million or its equivalent for corporate accounts within seven days”.
The witness narrated how sometime in 2017, a case of non-compliance with the Money Laundering Act 2011 (as amended) was referred to Team “A” for investigation.
“Following the investigation, the team liaised with the Asset Management Company of Nigeria, AMCON desk of EFCC and investigations revealed that Mr Dariye had a case with the AMCON team of EFCC as well.
“Furthermore, the first defendant was invited on May 15, 2017 to meet with the Team “A” and AMCON. During the meeting, Dariye disclosed that he did not know that the second defendant, Apartment le Paradis Limited was not registered with SCUML.
“I took him through the Money Laundering Act 2011 (as amended) and explained the need to register the hotel and report transactions and advised that he register with SCUML and send backlog of all its business transactions.
“A formal letter of non-compliance was written to Apartment le Paradis Limited on May 30, 2017 stating their obligations with regards to DNFI registration and reporting,” she said.
The case has been adjourned to June 12, 2018 for cross-examination.

Nairatrend: Vehicular traffic on the Mokwa-Jebba road has eased following the temporary fixing of the Mowo bridge after it collapsed on Saturday night.
The temporary solution on the collapsed bridge occurs less than 24 hours after the works minister, Babatunde Fashola, pledged to ensure a palliative is put in place for motorists plying the route.
The Federal Road Safety Corp had alerted motorists of the heavy traffic on the road after the Mowo bridge collapsed.
The Mokwa-Jebba road, which links Niger and Kwara states, is a major transit route between Abuja and the western part of the country.
The Mowo Bridge is located after Mowo Junction, 18km from Mokwa town in Niger State. The bridge is also located about one km from Tatabu Bridge, which collapsed in 2017 and was promptly fixed by the Nigerian government.
Vehicular traffic had been affected on both sides of the road, and there was no thoroughfare up till Sunday.
Bisi Kareem, the FRSC spokesperson, had advised motorists to, in the interim, ply the Lokoja road as an alternative “if going to Lagos and Abuja.’’
But when PREMIUM TIMES visited the location of the bridge Monday afternoon, there was free flow of vehicular traffic.
Our correspondent reports that the dilapidated part had been filled with granite and sand, making it easy to ply for motorists.
Umar Umaru, a motorist said the authorities had done “a temporary but quick construction” work on the bridge.
we also observed that there were scores of FRSC officials around the bridge coordinating vehicular movement.
Some motorists who spoke to our correspondent commended the government for its quick intervention.
It is, however, unclear whether further construction works would be done on the bridge.
Efforts to speak to the FRSC officials on duty proved abortive as they declined to speak officially on the state of the road.

Politics › Re: Obasanjo Challenged Me For Declaring June 12 Public Holiday - Kalu by nabegibeg: 9:46am On Jun 12, 2018 |
zakim: Former Abia State Governor, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu said on Monday that President Muhammadu Buhari has addressed the injustices associated with the annulment of June 12, 1993 Presidential Election, with the posthumous honour being conferred on Chief MKO Abiola as the winner of the freest and fairest election in the country.
Kalu, who spoke with Reporters at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) on his arrival from the United State, also declared that he was the first governor in the country that declared June 12 Public Holiday but he was challenged for doing so by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
According to him, the recognition of June 12 has proved wrong those doubting the commitment of Buhari to democracy.
He said the President has put Abiola in the map of the world. This, he stressed, was what past Presidents failed to do.
Kalu said the decision of Buhari to decorate late Abiola with the highest honours in the land shows that he is a democrat that the people can trust.
He however urged Buhari to go a step further by honouring the Chairman of the then National Electoral Commission (NEC), Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, who superintended over the elections.
Kalu also wants Buhari to address injustices people of the South East experienced during the Biafran Civil War by declaring the region a special area.
Kalu said Buhari should be commended for giving financial autonomy to the state judiciary and houses of assembly.
He said the new bill signed by the president, which gives autonomy to the judiciary and legislature should be extended to the federal arm of government.
He said, "I was the first governor that declared June 12 public holiday and Obasanjo wrote me a letter to challenge it.
"Now that Buhari is working, he should also remember Humphrey Nwosu, the man that conducted the freest and fairest election in Nigeria. He should also be honoured.
"Buhari should go a step further and declare the south east a social area because people in the region were given ill treatment. They lost mines and property. He has already made a good step by paying the Biafran police their entitlements."

Crime › Re: Sars And The Nigerian Society. by nabegibeg: 8:10am On Jun 12, 2018 |
AceRoyal: SARS AND THE NIGERIAN SOCIETY.
I am a young Nigerian youth working hard to make ends meat against all odds of economic and social hardship. I have gotten to the point where I can no longer keep quiet over fears of what might happen to me if I speak up.
The constant rise in the level of intimidation, harassment, emotional, psychological and physical assault, brutality and even extra judicial murder being carried out by those who have been constitutionally endowed to safe guard and protect us; the Nigerian Police.
Every person(youths especially) who seem to have a level of success is a criminal to them. The most guilty of this is the division of the Nigerian police called The Special Anti-Robbery Squad a.k.a SARS.
Whether you're trekking, on a bike, in a cab or driving, you're not safe! Not even celebrities and we'll known personalities are exempted from their menace. They have now become a growing scourge in the society. Some even refer to them as legal armed robbers and many even dread them more than the real armed robbers.
They(SARS) always act and feel they are above the law. They act with so much impunity and there has been so many recorded cases of extra judicial murders with hard evidence against them.
You don't need to be a criminal for you to be harassed and arrested. Once they arrest you, they frame you up on trumped up charges and if you resist or question them, they use brute force or will even shoot to kill and nothing will happen. All they need to do is tag you an armed robber or cultists. You dare not use an expensive phone (iPhone especially), look good or drive a good car. You become an instant soft target for them.
They raid popular recreational centers and joints, and even bank ATM dispensing points. Looking for victims to exploit, harass, brutalized and extort from. Numerous cases of kidnap and extortion has been made against them over the past few years. As long as they feel you have money, you become a soft target for them.
It has gotten so bad that you cannot differentiate them from armed robbers. Dressing so casually and dangerously brandishing their Ak47 riffles. Some go about in private cars looking for people to victimize. SARS officers also act as bodyguards to some persons, delving into land matters, family matters and debt collection that were considered civil cases.
There have been numerous campaigns to put an end to SARS but the government and police authorities have turned deaf ears to them. This clearly shows how insensitive the government is to the plight of its people.
The disregard for public opinion by the government and police authorities clearly shows that some persons in power are benefitting from the corrupt and illegal activities of SARS. How can a police division be considered bigger than the entire Nigerian police? The only thing said by the police authorities is that they are going to reform SARS.
When you hear the word "Reform" in Nigeria it actually means "make una learn to live with it".Reformation is just a word used to avoid the underlying issues at hand. It's as good as flattering to deceive. What steps are being taken so far by the government and police authorities to reform SARS? So far, very little has been done to curb the excesses of SARS despite numerous public outcry for the division to be scrapped. Even the Senate and House of Representatives of the national assembly has spoken out against SARS to no avail. No concrete or decisive steps taken so far to curb their excesses.
When the government and police authorities decide to promote and defend an adhoc unit of Law enforcement that has roundly been criticised by Law abiding citizens it becomes clear whose interest they are serving. Reformation never works when it comes to the police, even the word "force" was officially removed from their name, yet they still carry it along. The Nigerian police is a Law enforcement agency that doesn't respect the law they swore to uphold and defend.
The sad truth is that SARS will not be scrapped simply because it's an illegal cash cow for the Nigerian Police authorities and some highly placed persons in power. They will try to protect it at all cost maybe to the detriment of the voice of the citizens because it serves their selfish interests.
SARS is just a unit/division within the Nigerian Police, for those trying to defend SARS by saying crime will be on the increase once they are scrapped, I'll like to know the job description of the Nigerian Police again? What about the mobile police unit? Does that mean that SARS does the job of the entire police?
Well, in my opinion for SARS to be well reformed, the following measures must be put in place;
1. They must have a special uniform bearing their ID number which should be verifiable. Seeing men with AK47rifles at dangerous junctions at night wearing black shirts and jeans or dressed casually, one cannot easily differentiate between them and armed robbers. Some dress so casually wearing native attires and some bathroom slippers. They should be given special uniforms.
2. Their roles must be clearly defined. They are called "Special Anti-Robbery Squad". Take note of the words "Anti-Robbery". They should only be concerned about armed robbery and other crimes relating to the use of weapons. Involvement in domestic and civil matters should be prohibited. Also unlawful intimidation, arrests and violation of civil rights should be prohibited. The job of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is also to go after internet fraud stars. SARS has no business with that.
3. A special training school should be established for SARS officers and proper background checks should be carried out on personnels. A training school where civil rights are taught as well as social etiquette.
4. The Nigerian Police needs a unified help line number, not multiple numbers.
5. SARS officers should be given special vehicles or special vehicles should be made available for them that will have verifiable serial numbers. The use of private or unmarked cars should be prohibited.
6. Routine mental and psychological tests and evaluation should be carried out on SARS officers.
7. Routine narcotics tests should be carried out on SARS officers. 8. A special task force, panel of inquiry or division should be set up to monitor and check the activities of SARS with the help of the public. 9. The recruitment exercise into SARS should be thorough, with good background checks and evaluation. Illiterates and semi Illiterates should not be admitted into SARS or the Nigerian police. A government truly committed to the service of the people and the nation will listen to it's people. So far, majority of Nigerians are tired of SARS, as there has been numerous public outcry.
Worthy of note is that the SARS issue is beginning to have a regional coloration which is capable of disturbing the peace, unity and tranquility of the nation. As people of the southern part of the country have been the major victims of this SARS issue.
I know the government and police authorities are aware of the excesses of SARS, but why they've chosen to be livid about it, beats my imagination.
This SARS menace is really discrediting and painting the Inspector General of Police(IGP) as been weak, incompetent and incapable of heading and redeeming the battered image of the police. Even though he's doing his best to improve the Nigerian police.
This SARS issue if not properly handled might be detrimental to the government especially as election time is approaching.
If the above listed points cannot be fully implemented, then SARS should be scrapped!
God Bless Nigeria. God Bless Nigerians. May God help the Nigerian police!
From a concerned and patriotic Nigerian.

Health › Re: NAFDAC Confiscates 35 Containers Of Tramadol by nabegibeg: 5:10pm On Jun 11, 2018 |
OrientDailyNews: The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says it has seized about 35 containers of imported tramadol, a recently banned medical substance at various ports in the country. The Director General of the agency, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, who made the disclosure in Abuja on Sunday, said nine out of the seized containers of tramadol were released to NAFDAC by the Nigeria Custom Service (NCS)and had been destroyed.
“We are seriously working with the custom on this and each time they seize any container, they usually invite us to come and see the containers with tramadol. So far, 35 containers were seized and only nine of them have been handed over to NAFDAC which we have destroyed,” she said.
She, however, decried the delay by the custom in handing over the rest of the containers to her agency. The NAFDAC boss stated that tramadol was a restricted drug but had been abused by Nigerian youths who use it without prescription.
According to Adeyeye, who is also a professor of pharmacology, the drug destroys children’s brain thereby threatening the future generation of the nation. She lauded the present administration for placing an embargo on codeine, which she said, like tramadol, should only be given only by prescription as done in advanced country.
The director general said the agency was more determined and committed than ever to stem the menace of illicit and fake drugs in the country.
Meanwhile, the NAFDAC boss has disclosed that the agency had cleared backlog of 6,000 applications for registration of products within six months.
Adeyeye, who took over as substantive director general of NAFDAC in November 2017, said the applications are mostly from water and food companies.
“During my advocacy visit to stakeholders, I was questioned by our clients on the delay in registration of their products. Some of them told me that their applications had been with NAFDAC for two years and nothing was done.
“I took up that challenge and gave a directive for the applications to be cleared within a stipulated time. I gave the directive that by April, all applications on water installations and food and other companies’ registration should be cleared.
“We gave guidelines and deadline for the customers to meet and then involved other directorates in the agency to get it done,’’ she explained.
According to her, under normal circumstances, the procedure for water or food registration takes 60 days while drugs registration takes about 120 days because of tests that are carried out.
Adeyeye added that to meet the service delivery aspect of the agency, a Quality Management System was introduced “for the benefit of our end users”.
“All my directors and other members of staff are now more efficient and effective than ever to ensure safety of Nigerians especially in what they consume,’’ she said. (NAN)
