CrimeResidents Beat Suspected Serial Burglar To Pulp In Ondo by NaijaCover(op): 5:37am On Dec 05, 2023
Residents of Olupitan area in Ore, the headquarters of Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State have apprehended a suspected “serial burglar” who identified himself as Sunday Joseph.

It was gathered that the suspect was caught in the early hours of Saturday, December 2, 2023, after he allegedly broke into some houses and stole phones and money.

Some residents, who spoke with the state-owned newspaper, The Hope, claimed the suspect had been coming to the area to break into people’s houses and steal without being caught.

Residents of the community alleged that the suspect was caught for the same crime about two years ago but he escaped.

It took the efforts of some strong youths in the area, who pinned the suspect down as he tried to escape, they said.

Initially, the suspect said that he was not in the area to steal, but after he was given the beating of his life, he admitted to committing the crime.

A resident of the area who identified himself as Kehinde Ajibade, said that an occupant of a particular house, who had been suspecting him, caught him before he escaped.

“Some years back, he was caught with the same act but he escaped. He used to disguise like a vigilante. And when people on the street asked him where he watches over? He would respond that he watches over the second street and since then, we have been monitoring his movement,” Ajibade explained.

"About 2 to 3 months ago, he resurfaced again in the same environment. When he came then, nobody knew him as a resident in the area.

"On Wednesday midnight, he broke into a house, removed the burglary window, and stole phones, money and some foodstuffs. And since then, the residents in the area have been vigilant. People started to suspect his movement and didn’t sleep with their two eyes closed, by just to catch him.

“On that fateful midnight he was apprehended, he came to that same house he had successfully robbed before. But unluckily for him, without a prior notice, residents within the area apprehended him. He later attacked some of the residents who pinned him down.

"Some residents in that house were able to recognize him. So, they approached him and challenged him that he was the person that used to come and steal phones, but he denied.

“Everyone in the house came out en masse that night to see the serial burglar who had been terrorizing their houses. Some instruments found with him included, hammer, chisel, knife, plier and wheel spanner.” he said.

It was further gathered that the suspect was admitted to the General Hospital in Ore, after he sustained injuries from the beating.

Meanwhile, the matter was reported to the police in Ore.

CrimeSuspected Phone Thieves Stab Final Year ATBU Student To Death In Bauchi by NaijaCover(op): 1:50pm On Dec 04, 2023
Unknown Assailants Suspected to be phone snatchers have stabbed a final year student of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi (ATBU) Joseph Obiaje Agabaidu, to death.

The 500-Level Geology Student is said to be the eldest among four children of his family.

A source in the school told the punch that he was returning to his lodge situated around the Yelwan Tudu Market in the Yelwa area, a suburb of Bauchi metropolis around 7 pm on Saturday, December 2, 2023, when he was attacked.

“Agabaidu, a final year Geology student based in Otukpo LGA but an indigene of Ankpa LGA of Logo State, was fatally stabbed around 7 pm on Saturday as assailants attempted to forcefully take his phone,” the source said.

"Despite immediate efforts to get him medical help, Agabaidu succumbed to his injuries and passed away yesterday (Sunday) morning.

"This tragic event echoes a similar incident last December when another Benue student lost his life in a phone-related struggle.

"In the wake of this heartbreaking loss, we implore the school management, the police, and the Bauchi State government to prioritise and enhance the security of students within the state.

"Our community should not have to endure such sorrow, and proactive measures are crucial to prevent further tragedies.

"Joseph is an older brother to three other siblings of his, all schooling here in ATBU. The VP SUG, two other staff members of the university and his siblings will be conveying his corpse back home.”

Meanwhile, it was gathered that students are set to stage a peaceful protest Monday morning to express their grievances.

"The protest is to also draw the attention of the management of the school, the state government, security agencies and everyone to the situation we’ve found ourselves in as students,” the source added.

Another student said, “Students are getting set for a peaceful protest this morning. It is to express our pain over the unfortunate incident that happened to our fellow students. This is not the first nor second time this would be happening.

"I feel very pained about this incident. I also have three younger siblings here in the school. Imagine how I’ll feel if such should happen to any of them. It’s just that with the organisation I am a member of in the school, I just have to maintain a neutral stand on this. I shouldn’t be seen in the forefront of the entire protest, but honestly, it’s very painful.

"I call on the management, the state government and security agencies to rise to this incident and provide more adequate security to all students who left their parents’ houses and have come to school to learn.”

A Woman and her two children have been confirmed dead after a car rammed into them in the Ajamgbadi area of Lagos State.

The accident occurred on Saturday around 8:30 pm at 77 Bus Stop Shibiri Imude Road, Ajamgbadi.

The 29-year-old driver of the ash-coloured Toyota Camry with registration number BDG-55IHG, who is also a mechanic, one Oluwatimilehin Olajide, was said to have fled the scene of the accident after a mob attempted to lynch him, and ran to a nearby police post.

An eyewitness told PUNCH Metro that the car was on top speed when it crushed the woman and her two children.

He said, “The driver was at a high speed when the car rammed into the woman and her two children. The trio died instantly.

“The driver of the car took off with his car. I guess he was scared of the boys there who wanted to lynch him. They however chased after him
,” he added.

When contacted, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident.

He said the driver of the car, a mechanic, crushed the mother and children and ran off to the Shibiri Police Post as the mob attempted to attack him. He said the mob chased him to the station with the same intent but he was saved by a team of detectives sent by the DPO from Ilemba Hausa Division.

He said, “Officers of the Ilemba Hausa Police Division received a distress call from the Assistant Superintendent of Police attached to the Shibiri Police Post on Saturday that one Oluwatimilehin Olajide, 29, drove an ash-coloured Toyota Camry with registration number BDG-55IHG, speedily into the police post.

“He alighted and ran into the post; he revealed that he had an accident and hit a woman and her two children who lost their lives on the spot.

“However, while he narrated the incident to the ASP, a crowd emerged and overwhelmed them.

“The mob destroyed the car, threatened to set the police post and the car ablaze if the suspect was not released to them.”

Hundeyin said, “The Divisional Police Officer of the Ilemba Hausa Division on receiving this call led operatives to the police post and condoned off the area, rescued the suspect and took the car to the station.

“The DPO of Ilemba Hausa Division led a team of detectives to the police post, condoned off the area and rescued the suspect.

“The car was also carried to the station. The police also visited the scene of the accident in the company of traffic officers and the corpses were evacuated.”

Hundeyin added that the deceased’s relatives were making arrangements to carry the corpses for burial.

“Some officers have been positioned at the post to douse the tension there. Meanwhile, the relatives of the deceased have started arrangements to carry the corpses for burial in line with Islamic rites.”

Hundeyin, however, advised drivers to stop speeding and dangerous driving, especially in this Yuletide.
