Crime › Woman Killed As Police Enforce Okada Ban In Lagos by NaijaCover(op): 7:14am On Dec 06, 2023 |
The residents of Santos, a suburb community in Lagos were on Tuesday agitated over the death of a yet-to-be-identified woman who was said to have been crushed by a truck in the Abule- Egba Area of Lagos.
It was gathered that the police team was out to enforce the ban on commercial motorcycles in that axis of Lagos when the unfortunate incident that claimed her life happened.
Confirming the incident, Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, a Superintendent of Police posted on his handle, “Preliminary investigation reveals that earlier today at about 10: 30hrs at Santos Avenue, Abule Egba, police officers on legitimate enforcement of the existing ban on motorcycles in Lagos State were about to be mobbed by motorcycle riders.
“To preserve the lives of the officers and equally rule out casualties on the side of the riders, teargas was justifiably used to disperse the crowd.
“A passenger in a tricycle, witnessing the use of teargas ahead, panicked and jumped out of the tricycle. Sadly, an approaching Leyland tipper, with registration number AAB 376 CB, being driven recklessly, ran over her.”
It was further gathered that the driver of the tipper absconded from the scene while the vehicle was recovered.
He added that contact has also been established with the family of the deceased while, a full investigation into the incident has commenced. Source: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2023/12/woman-killed-in-as-police-enforce-okada-ban-in-lagos/

Health › UK Bans Healthcare Workers From Bringing Families by NaijaCover(op): 3:45pm On Dec 05, 2023 |
The Britain’s government has unveiled a raft of measures aimed at reducing “unprecedented” and “unsustainable” levels of legal migration to the United Kingdom (UK), including banning healthcare workers from bringing their families and dependants to the UK.
A statement issued by the Home Office on Monday said the new plan to slash migration levels and curb abuse of the immigration system would deliver the biggest-ever reduction in the country’s net migration.
According to the Home Office, the revision will encourage “businesses to look to British talent first and invest in their workforce”, helping UK to deter employers from over-relying on migration, whilst bringing salaries in line with the average full-time salary for these types of jobs.
Interior Secretary, James Cleverly, said his plan would result in 300,000 fewer people coming to the UK in the coming years.
Under plans set out by Cleverly, workers would need to earn at least £38,700 to obtain a visa, up from £26,200, while care workers would be barred from bringing in dependants from next April.
He said, “The first of our five points will be to end the abuse of the care visa. We will stop overseas care workers from bringing family, dependants and we will require firms in England to be regulated by the Health Care Quality Commission in order for them to sponsor visas.
“Approximately, £120,000 dependants accompanied £100,000 care workers in the year ending September 2023, but only 25% of the dependants are estimated to be in work, meaning that a significant number are joining public services rather than helping to grow the economy.
“We recognize that healthcare workers do great work in our NHIS and health sector, but it’s also important that immigrants make a big enough financial contribution. Therefore, it will increase annual immigration healthcare charge by 66% from £624 to £1035 to raise, on average, £1.3 billion for the health services of the country every year.
“Second, we will stop immigration undercutting the salary of British workers. We will increase skilled workers’ earning threshold by a third to £38,000 from the next spring in line with the medium, full-term wage for those kinds of jobs.
“Those coming on social and health visas will be exempt, so we will continue to bring healthcare workers.
“Finally, having already banned overseas masters students’ from bringing family members to the UK, I have asked the Immigration Advisory Committee to revise the graduates’ rate to prevent abuse, to protect the integrity and quality of the UK’s outstanding higher education sector. It needs to work in the best interest of the UK, supporting the pathway into high quality jobs in the global talent pool and reducing opportunities for abuse.” Source: https://dailytrust.com/uk-bans-healthcare-workers-from-bringing-families/

Crime › 13-Year-Old Miracle Adereti Kolawole Kidnapped In Lagos by NaijaCover(op): 3:30pm On Dec 05, 2023 |
Miracle Adereti Kolawole, a 13-year-old student, was abducted by an unknown gang while returning home from school last Friday, December 1st, in the Ikotun area of Lagos.
Her father, Mr. Adereti Oluwadare Segun, recounted that he dropped Miracle and her younger sister at the bus stop where the school bus usually picks them in the morning before heading to work at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), where he serves as an air traffic communicator with the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA). He received a distressing call in the afternoon informing him of his daughter’s kidnapping.
The incident was reported at the Afonka Police Station in Egbeda, Alimosho, Lagos, on the same day.
According to a police incident report, Inspector Ogidiolu Olajimi, is leading the investigation and rescue efforts.
Witnesses reported that the gang followed the school bus, parked a short distance away from the bus stop, waited for the bus to leave, then abducted Miracle while she and her sister were walking home.
Mr. Adereti, while speaking to journalists, said, “We woke up early to prepare the kids for school before I dropped them at the bus stop. We had no inkling of such a wicked act by this gang, who falsely claimed that, as a politician, I have sufficient funds to secure my daughter’s release.”
He further added, “We’ve received threats warning us not to involve the police. But as a family, we are deeply distressed and have no choice but to seek help from law enforcement. I implore the diligent officers of the Nigeria Police Force to swiftly take action to track down these culprits. Their threats indicate they’re seeking a ransom, putting our lives in peril.”
Mr. Adereti pleaded for police presence at his residence for interim security, stating, “The situation has traumatised my family. I earnestly appeal for immediate intervention to bring these criminals to justice and ensure our safety.” Source: https://leadership.ng/13-year-old-girl-abducted-on-her-way-home-from-school-in-lagos/
