Gunmen have kidnapped a Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Mathias Opara, in Imo State. 

The priest, also known as Owu Ujo, is the Man of Order and Discipline of the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri.

He was kidnapped on Friday, May 26, 2023, along Ejemekwuru/Ogbaku Road while returning to Owerri after performing the funeral rites for the father of one of his colleagues at the Izombo community in the Oguta LGA, Imo State.

Recall that Jude Maduka, the Catholic priest in charge of the Christ the King Catholic Church at Ezinachi/Ugwuago in the state’s Okigwe Local Government Area, was kidnapped last week.

Rev. Fr. Opara was reportedly abducted alongside others who were in the same car with him.

Rev. Fr. Raymond Ogu, Director of Public Communications for the Owerri Catholic Archdiocese, confirmed the development.

Gunmen suspected to be armed robbers have killed an intern attached to the Dental Therapy Department of Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hos­pital, Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.

The Dental Therapist identified as Kelvin Onuchie, was shot dead in front of the entrance gate of his resi­dence at Mberi Street, Abakaliki on Wednesday night, May 25, 2023.

According to the Nation, he was outside the gate making calls around 8 pm when gunmen shot at him before fleeing the area.

A source in the area said the victim came back from mid­week service and was making a call outside his gate at ‘Corpers’ lodge’ where he stays when the gunmen shot him.

The gunmen, according to the source, were suspected to have finished their operation/robbery somewhere in the area.

"They were probably fleeing, only to see Mr. Kelvin Onuchie, making calls outside, which they apparently perceived as a threat, and consequently shot him,” the source said.

The deceased it was gathered hailed from Ag­bor in Delta State.
