Who are you to dictate the lifestyles of Nigerians abroad? Are you the one working 3 jobs, paying their mortgage, or paying for their lexus? It is none of your business, if our people choose to live an extravagant lifestyle, in the name of keeping up with the Joneses. Unlike some other guy who is bragging that his friends are always asking him for money, I am certain that most, if not all of those people have not asked your to deposit some money into their account. While modesty should be embraced, who am I to dictate another person's lifestyle?

The outstanding Nigerians, are the ones, who hold full time legitimate jobs, while taking care of their family, engaging in civil and volunteer work, and still carve out time to spend quality time with their family. They are the ones, vocal in their community in stemming out crime, drugs, and other vices that have ruined the lives of people.

For those with a high profile position, here is one of them.

Career › Re: Why Are All Africans Studying Nursing In America? by Ndipe(m): 9:13am On May 03, 2007
Chinani, maybe, nurses are underpaid in Houston, but in California, they were well compensated. LVN's usually average a little over 20 dollars, excluding overtime, while RN's can command upto fifty dollars an hour. Infact, there is a girl who told me that there is a hospital in the East Bay of California who is recruiting RN's, with a starting salary of 50 dollars an hour. I dont blame people who delve into nursing when they arrive here. You have to survive, and the course requirements for an LVN is less than 3 years.

Doubletree, yeah, listening to stories by grandmother in my mom's village was something that I really miss. I enjoyed both the country and city life of Nigeria.

Literature › Re: Hearts and Hints Magazines by Ndipe(m): 10:11am On May 02, 2007
So, is Hints still in business? Never particularly cared for the magazine, really, but it was a hit with some of my female coursemates in college. Perhaps, the only column that sort of tickled my fancy then, was Fatherhood with Ibe. Ibe is the publisher of the magazine, and his column was about the joys and challenges of bringing up his children. I think one of the kid's name is Nkem. When I was back home a while back, the column was still thriving. His 2 elder kids, were now in boarding house, as he wrote, and it was quite fun reading it. You read the column, and it is as if you can visualize what exactly is going on, in the family. I'd say, they were upper middle class. I liked his column kind of reminds me of childhood back home, etc, etc. How I wish Nigeria would change.

Akapa's magazine, I fell hook, line and sinker for their stories, till Classique of MEE exposed them, that they were lifting their stories, from Ebony magazine, then stooped so low, to 'disfigure' those pictures. There was also prime people, with their spooky story, "It happened to me", and my favorite Quality magazine of Newswatch magazine. Life moves on but it is always fun to reminisce on the good old days of Naija.

How emotional can one be when a member gets banned? Its not as if most people here know each other. People just move on with life. Or, should we start investing in kleenex tissue, so that, by the time the hordes of sympathizers of a banned member reach out to it, to dab their tears, the value of the stock would increase? wink
Literature › Re: Hearts and Hints Magazines by Ndipe(m): 3:04am On May 02, 2007
Whether, they were lifted from another publication or not, the essence of my discourse was that some of those stories, in as much as Hints tried to pass off as "true life events" experienced by their contributors, were simply fake. Maybe those that were plagiarized from other magazines were actually true, but how can you be sure?

PS: Your attempt to be a whistle blower on Hints did not pan out, because you choose to direct your grievances towards the same medium, that you claimed were perpetrating the plagiarism scandal. What were you expecting? That they would publish your rebuttal? I doubt it, especially, when some of those stories were their meal ticket. An alternative would have been to write to other media houses, to expose Hints magazine. I am sure, your response would have been given attention from other competing media houses. There was one magazine called Akapa's top Magazine that published ludicrous claims about Michael Jackson having a Nigerian girlfriend, and all sorts of stories. He was exposed by some magazines like Classique, after their journalist(s) revealed that those pictures were lifted from Ebony magazine. The magazine eventually went out of business.

Girl, you have to assert yourself, and dont let that girl walk over you. If you are willing to cave into her childish demands, then be prepared for a confrontation in your matrimonial home, when "aunty" starts ordering you around the house, dictating to you, on what dishes to prepare for your husband, the quantity of salt and pepper to add for rice and stew, and all that. You really need to stand up and put and end to this demands. If she does not like you, after you have extended the welcome mat for her, well, that is HER problem, not yours.

Jobs/Vacancies › Re: African Development Bank Is Recruiting by Ndipe(m): 10:42am On May 01, 2007
Nice. Thanks for the information. The question is this, what incentives has the ADB instituted to aid low income workers in Africa? Africans should not be left at the mercy of the World Bank. Perhaps, this is a positive step, that our own bank, conversant with the economies of Africa, would aid us without any draconian laws that would stifle our economy.

Back then, there were some people who doubted the authenticity of the stories in Hints magazine. Then, perhaps, to prove that their stories were true, the editors of the magazine, Hints published a letter from a writer, who wrote that he was interested in having their pseudo stories published in their magazine. The editors countered back that they only published true life stories. For some teenagers, Hints was the 'sole ingredient' necessary to guide them in a relationship. For adults, we have doubts about the authenticity of those stories.

Investment › Re: Interest Rate On Fixed Deposit Accounts In Nigeria by Ndipe(m): 7:36am On Apr 30, 2007
Tmoni, you have to tie in the inflation rate with the performance of the interest rate. So, while we may be rejoicing that Nigerian banks would pay you 12 percent on your cash, remember, as one member wrote, the inflation rate is about 15 percent, which means that your money is depreciating. On the other hand, if the inflation rate in Britain is less than 4 percent a year, and your funds yields about 4 percent interest, accrued from the bank, then you are better off investing in the UK banks. Remember, it is not how much money you have, but the value of your currency.
Investment › Re: Interest Rate On Fixed Deposit Accounts In Nigeria by Ndipe(m): 7:20am On Apr 30, 2007
I was obviously mistaken, because I thought Nigerian banks offered a more attractive rate on Fixed deposit than their American counterparts. With the high rate of inflation back home, then, it probably does not make economic sense, to deposit your money in fixed deposit, because your Naira would depreciate in the long run. Some banks, like WAMU and HSBC are offering rates of 5 and 6%, which actually boosts the value of your money, because inflation in the states generally isnt high, it is around 2-3 percent, for consumer goods.

Still, there are other ways of beating inflation, if you have the money. Mutual funds and the stock market are one of the ways of combating inflation from depreciating the value of your money.

Gone are those days when challenging topics were the norm on the board. Today, rap, sex, and other less challenging topics fill the board. Honestly, its sad to see the caliber of people on this board who, presumably are Nigerians, are so inclined to embrace rap and rap about it on the board. Seun, have you noticed the difference too?

Yeah, Unical Staff School was very nice. The infrastructures of the building, and it was situated on a mamoth acre of land. Remember the staff quarters, the nice roads, the houses, it was almost like GRA. Very clean, and quiet. I liked it. Some of my classmates lived there. As you know, some of my cousins went to Aunty Margaret, and we each thought our primary school was better than the other. I did not know the founder of your school, but may her soul rest in peace, Amen. Was she married to Ntieyong Udo Uko? Or was it the founder of Hillside Nursery school, another posh primary school in Calabar? It never dawned on me to even organize a fundraising event for my primary school, because they are affiliated with Unical, a federal University. If I could, it would be for Obot Idim. My primary school used to host its annual Christmas party oh, my -- it was quite spectacular. Even old boys, used to attend it, and as you know for Naija, it is not strictly by invitation.

Sha, it's good to know we have nice memories of our days in Calabar. Even if folks don't know each other, they can sort of live vicariously, if they read someone's blog about their experiences in Nigeria. How I long for the good old days!!! cheesy

Cheers

Nice pictures. How much are the school fees? My2cents, what do you say, since you went to Aunty Margaret, one of the popular primary schools in Calabar? Unical Staff school is still around. At times, I dont trip over school pics in Nigeria, because mine (in those days) was probably upto par with the new generation institutions in Nigeria.
