FamilyRe: Dna Results, Seriously, Is It A Curse Or A Blessing? by Ndipe(op): 12:02am On Apr 23, 2007
Abeg, make una no misconstrue what I had earlier written on the blessings/anguish that DNA has caused. I know that DNA has been a blessing in securing the freedom of innocent prisoners, particularly in the USA. We have read stories of incarcerated black men, who gained their freedom as a result of DNA test. However, the story of the Ghanaian man whose life has taken an emotional tailspin, after DNA results proved that he was not the father of three children that he had supported financially and emotionally could be a negativity. Should the truth have been told him, or should he have wallowed in blissful ignorance that those children were actually his, biologically? Of course now that the truth has been out, the trust that he had on his late wife has been shattered. In its place is angst, anguish, perhaps, bitterness and all sorts of negativity. If you were in your shoes, would you have preferred if the truth had been revealed to you, or would you just prefer to be completely ignorant about it?

As for those who are writing about trust, like some girl who told a respondent that if he had problems trusting his significant other, then he should not marry. I have to tell you that trust, however relevant in a relationship, can be shattered. There are stories of men, who trusted their wife, like the Ghanian man, only to realize through DNA test, that the wife was unfaithful to him, at least in the course of their marriage. Now, how can you reconcile the level of trust that the man had on the wife, and the wife's unfaithfulness?

Mine, trust or no trust, I am doing a DNA test on my kids. I dont want to be upended later on in life that so so and so does not belong to me biologically. It is better to know the truth at a young age, than to be confronted with facts later on in life.
LiteratureRe: Which Books/Novels Are You Currently Reading? by Ndipe(m): 4:52am On Apr 21, 2007
Measuring time by Helon Habila. For the most part< it is a deeply engrossing novel. I'd like to read "Midnight's children" by Salman Rushdie afterwards.

Very shameful that this tradition of discrimination is still rearing its ugly head, even in the computer age. Tomorrow now, some of the adherents of this accursed practises would cry foul of being discriminated in the nation.
HealthRe: Razor Bumps Or Ingrown Hairs by Ndipe(m): 12:29am On Apr 21, 2007
Dr Moore cream was also effective in eliminating the razor bumps that I experienced while shaving with a razor blade.

Here is their website.

http://www.mooreunique.com/detail.asp?id=125.

I think I may have purchased their products at walgreens. So, before using clipper, apply the cream on the affected part, and the bumps would gradually disappear. Afterwards, start using clipper. One disadvantage with clipper though is that you have to be shaving regularly if you want to maintain a clean cut look.

Even if annulment is acceptable in Catholic Church, in the Holy Bible, Divorce is never encouraged, so in as much as some people try to disassociate annulment from divorce, they are still the same. The ceremony and vows were recited, so , encouraging him to divorce is not right.

@Bulutti, huts may not be of an economic significance to you, but dont forget that people, unable to live in concrete houses live in mud houses. I am not against developement, but it should not displace the dwellers of the locale, forcing them to be homeless. That is what Raji Rasaki did in Lagos, demolishing Maroko, while evicting long life renters of the place. The end result, the rich got the piece of land, while the poor people had to start life all over again. So you see, developement has its faults. Huts may not serve a purpose to you, or to the nation, but to the common man, it is their CASTLE.

Aloib, bitter about what? Do you think I have time to follow the progress made by interracial couples in the USA?

@my2cents, da abadie? Your 'brother' Attah is following in the footsteps of Duke by trying to market Uyo as a tourist city. No pain, no gain. However, lets not be quick to judge him for starting this project. True, he should have concentrated on areas that are more beneficial to the common masses, vis a vis, roads, small scale industries, electricity and the rest of them. However, with this golf course now in Uyo, perhaps, it will serve a purpose in the future when every "Okon, Edet and Ekaette" would, in a bid to rub shoulders with others would sign up for golf classes. That way, the knowledge of playing golf would not be esoteric, as it is for most Akwa Ibomites. Lets not fault him, the man, has succeeded in establishing a bridge between the 2 gateways of CRS and AKS, Calabar and Uyo.

Maybe, by then, you could even be the one imparting lessons on golf. cheesy

@Londoncool, eti-didie?

Well, if the standard of living in Naija is to be compared with those of yankee and jand, countries of the Western hemisphere, tagged as "Advanced countries", I'd write that it is an unfair comparison. However, lets be fair by comparing our standard of living with other African countries like Burkina Faso, Somalia, or non African countries like Iraq. With that, the saying, "Counting your blessings" would certainly prevail, even in the minds of pessimist of Nigerians. By the way, I am not an advocate of mediocrity.

@Bulutti, would you approve the decimation of your village, for the development of infrastructures? I wouldn't, no matter what. I am sure that our villages can co-exist peacefully with developments in the city, without any intrusion.

Da owo@my2cents, stereotypes could still exist in the minds of some hard core tribalists, education or no education. Living in America, I am sure that you are shocked to know that despite the racial progress attained in the country, some racists are still opposed to interracial relationships.
PoliticsRe: Is This True Picture Of Life In Nigeria? by Ndipe(m): 9:42am On Apr 17, 2007
@Buluti, in a perfect world, that woman would be living a luxurious life at her age, instead of relying on subsitence labor for survival. However, in today's society, there exist different social segments/classes, even in America. At least, she is better than the hordes of homeless people in America and Britain, or the jobless, not sure on how to pay their bills, or where their next meal would come from. Life is not about bemoaning your losses, it is about counting your blessings everyday. Without so, bitterness would gradually descend on you and rob you of the inability to appreciate life. I have seen homeless people in America, regarded as the richest country in the world. And to be frank, that woman's life is better than theirs.

So, BBC, if their aim was to make a mockery of Nigeria, has failed woefully. Tell me, why is it hard to present a positive picture of Africa? Nobody should tell me that bad news sells, because the report about America, presented by foreign journalists to Africa, in some cases are positive. Our people rely on those images, hence the quest to move to America for greener pastures.
PoliticsRe: Why Cant Americans Get Rid Of Their Guns? Virginia Tech Killings by Ndipe(m): 9:29am On Apr 17, 2007
What is the linkage between unprotected sex and gun violence@naijacutee? you gotta think well before you jump into hasty conclusions.

This senseless act of killings would not occur, in my opinion if there was gun control, however, some people feel that individuals need guns to defend themselves. Disarming them of guns would be denying them of their rights.
FamilyDna Results, Seriously, Is It A Curse Or A Blessing? by Ndipe(op): 9:02am On Apr 17, 2007
Trust, the underlying factor in a marriage cant be questioned when one's wife gives birth and the baby is a mirror image of the father. That was one of the determining factors used to establish the paternity of one's child, especially in olden times. But trust can be sabotaged. A woman can easily pin her pregnancy from an adultereous affair, on her unsuspecting husband. However, science is finally catching up with these unfaithful women as men, can now request through conventional means if a child is actually theirs, biologically or not. And in some cases, the old saying, "Only a woman knows the father of her child can easily be validated, not unless the woman had multiple relationships (Povich's show is an example)

But seriously, do you think that DNA has been more of a blessing than a pain? Larry Birkhead can always thank DNA for establishing paternity of her infant daughter, a slap to the cruel and malicious intentions of the mother (yeah, it was very malicious of Ms. Smith to have done so) to have presented her to another man. I am actually in awe that he went at great length to prove that he was the father. Others may have given up, besides, who can always be certain of their paternal rights?

On the other hand, read this story. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/10/us/10dna.html?_r=1&pagewanted=2&oref=slogin.

A man's attempt to bring in his children from Ghana ends in a tragedy, because DNA results came out to disprove his long held notion that only one of his four kids, he had invested financially and emotionally, like a dutiful father was his. Angst, despondence, a constant reminder that his late wife was unfaithful to him, perhaps in their marital life has weighed heavily on him, since he was presented with the results. His next move is to petition for them as their step-father. His only biological child from his late wife is in the states with him, while the the 'step-kids' , unaware of their true parternity are in Ghana, and wondering when they can join their 'father'.

If the DNA results had not been used, the Ghanaian would have gleefully believed that all those kids he had raised were actually his, and would have been excited in reuniting with them. DNA has only erased the pain, leaving behind a sense of betrayal. So, while the likes of Birkhead are rejoicing over the established paternity of their infant children, there are others, who are lamenting over the emotional void in their psyche due to the knowledge, courtesy of DNA that the children sired in one's marriage are not actually theirs biologically, but were products of an adulterous relationships.

Is the pain and angst associated with DNA really worth it, or do you consider it to be a blessing?

It is greed that motivates these people to fall hook line and sinker to this scammers. Both the scammer and the victim deserve blame. How can one just fall for a single lie that 25 million dollars is waiting for them, for as long as they turn in their bank account information? I sometimes get mail from british companies informing me that I have won the lottery, but I dont even respond to their scam.

There is dignity in labor, so BBC should leave us alone. In as much as I sympathize with the woman's plight with her inlaws and I posted a short story about widowhood in Nigeria (https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-28531.0.html), BBC should also film pictures of the homeless in Britain, the homeless in America, the dayworkers in America and quit painting Nigeria black.

Yeah, lifestyle for the underclass has fallen abysmally, but for us, we can make a difference. Sometimes, I think Nigerians are their worst enemy. On another Nigerian webboard, I suggested to the members that maybe they should be a charity fund raised for one student who had scored distinction in all his classes and was named West Africa's best high school student, or so. One guy countered that any funds should be set aside for the less privileged, like the the disabled, and not for a student who aced his papers in the exams.
huh

CultureRe: Christians And Traditional Chieftaincy Titles by Ndipe(m): 10:06am On Apr 16, 2007
Jangulabi, very good question that you asked about a Christian accepting knighthood. I dont know what being conferred a knight entails, but I am beginning to think that it is quite similar to accepting a chieftaincy title, and as such should be avoided at all cost. Even if it is a honorary title, please dont, it is just a bait, that may have damning consequences. As for knighthood, I dont know what is involved in the ceremony, but if there is any incantation or so, then, it is just a gloss, to perpetuate the 'honoree' into bondage.

Never cave into his overtures, instead, have a word with him that you dont appreciate his advances. If he persists, the alternative would be to resign. You never know, the grass is sometimes greener on the other side. Please pray about it. Prayers does wonders.
