Lights, camera, Africa
Movies are uniting a disparate continent, and dividing it too

AN AFRICAN academic with a coiffed mane is sipping coffee in a Ghanaian airport when he spots a pulpy Nigerian film on an overhead screen. “A travesty, a grave crime,” he splutters. “Such slowpoke images should never be shown in this country. They are veritably poisoning our culture.”

It is hard to avoid Nigerian films in Africa. Public buses show them, as do many restaurants and hotels. Nollywood, as the business is known, churns out about 50 full-length features a week, making it the world’s second most prolific film industry after India’s Bollywood. The Nigerian business capital, Lagos, is said by locals to have produced more films than there are stars in the sky. The streets are flooded with camera crews shooting on location. Only the government employs more people. . .

Bill Clinton is 64 years old, with a grueling schedule. Cut him some slack.
He should have stayed back home. Declining to attend the 'black' event wouldnt have been a setback to his status as the first 'black' president of the USA. But his dozing off only embarrassed him.
EducationRe: Nigerian Boarding House Stories And Pictures by Ndipe(m): 12:44am On Dec 17, 2010
Some senior students who had plotted to beat up a junior student were disciplined by the school authorites. Out of revenge, they (according to what I heard) threatened to kill the boy. The ring leader was well feared in school because he was very wicked. So, one of the teachers immediately alerted the boy's parents to inform them of this development that could jeopardize his well being. The parents promptly arrived.

It was on a school day when they arrived and that day, I saw an angry mother screaming obscenities while she picked up a big stone and hunted for the senior student. The guy was out of sight, but I was perplexed by her conduct considering the level of terror the guy inflicted on us junior students. I asked myself "Hasnt this woman heard of the atrocities of this senior student and that her very act could send him into a rampage and in the process beat her up to dead?" Either she heard or not, but she did not care, she was determined to deal with that bully, but she couldnt get a hold of him. Case was dismissed, and the student, I think was expelled. This later on became a sobering lesson to me in my later years, that any loving mother, would risk their life to defend her children. Then, I did not reason that far.

Another one was when a junior student was punished by a senior student. Just as he was serving his punishment (he was kneeling down) his mother appeared on the scene in a 504 with his elder brother. The boy rushed at them and reported the injustices. Whereupon his elder brother attacked the senior student and they got into it. The distressed mother tried to separate these two warring guys to no avail. In the end, the fight came to an end, and the younger brother temporarily left home with his family members. As they drove off the campus, some angry students (I wasnt involved in it) threw pebbles at her car, while the mother (I know her quite well) retaliated by pouring invectives and curses at us. The words she spewed out was horrible but I cant justify the actions of my school mates. Despite the commotion, there wasnt a riot, and her windshields and car windows did not suffer any major damage. However the school lost the younger boy later on when he withdrew from campus to a different institution.

My experiences in boarding house was I would put it, full of drama.

With my own eyes, I saw this angry woman pick up a big stone and ran after the senior student screaming obscenities at him. The guy was out of sight, and I was perplexed. I was like, "Hasnt this woman heard of the atrocities of this senior student and that her very act could send him into a rampage and in the process beat her up to dead. The woman was fearless in her anger. Case was dismissed, the student, I think was expelled. This later on became a sobering lesson to me in my later years, that any loving mother, would risk their lives to defend their children's lives. Then, I did not reason that far.

It's what my people, Akwa Ibom, say "Afia Itong" The distressed mother tried to separate these two lions to no avail. In the end, the fight came to an end, and the younger brother temporarily left home with his family members. As they drove off, incensed students (I wasnt involved in it) threw pebbles at her car, while the mother (I know her quite well) rained abuses and curses at us. It was a huge commotion, that could have sparked a riot. Surprisingly, her windshields and windows did not suffer any major damage, but in the long run, the boy withdrew from school to a different institution.

Boarding school then was something else.

PoliticsRe: Nigeria’s Airports Most Embarrassing – Mark by Ndipe(m): 2:19am On Dec 10, 2010
Nigeria lacks the maintenance culture. Once a building/edifice is commissioned, that's it. When I flew into the USA from MM Airport, I dazzled my coworkers on the beauty of the airport and unfortunately boasted that it was finer than the airports in the USA. One lady confessed that she's heard so. Imagine how I felt when I flew out of San Francisco Airport and days later, landed at Murtala Mohammed Airport. The difference was clear, it was disappointing to see the inefficiency of our airport. I dont know if it was national pride that stirred the passion to talk glowingly about our airport.
CultureRe: Fables From The Past - Has Anybody Heard These Stories? by Ndipe(m): 9:02pm On Dec 09, 2010
shadrach77:
back in the days in the 80s, there were these stories that always tend to spread around like wildfire and one wouldn't know if they were real or fictitious. There was one about a lady who killed her boyfriend and while she was driving, she stopped to pick a passenger only to discover that the passenger had pins as his teeth, then out of fear, she told the man to drop. Apparently the man was the ghost of her late boyfriend - then as she stopped again few minutes later to pick another passenger, she started relating what occured to her previously and the man suddenly opened his teeth saying "like this?!" and the lady froze to death in fear.

There was another story about Ajayi the tailor - a tailor in Akure who used his girlfriend for money making ritual and made love to the lady in a burial ground - thereafter, the lady started getting thinner by the day until she gave up the ghost.

did anybody hear these stories? have you got more stories like this to share? huh huh
I read about the Ajayi story, but she came out to deny it, and some journalist wondered if the girl was suffering from HIV. remember that's when the AIDS story was beginning to make news in the country. Na dem alone know the truth.

Perrito4u:
The presence is invisible to human eyes. Remember, Jesus discussed the sign of his presence. (Matthew 24:3) If his presence were visible to human eyes, would a sign be needed? To illustrate: Imagine that you are traveling to see the ocean. You may see road signs directing you along the way, but once you are at the shore, standing at the water’s edge with the vast expanse of water stretching out to the horizon, would you expect to see a sign with a big arrow pointing ahead, emblazoned with the word “Ocean”? Of course not! Why have a sign to point out what you can easily identify with your eyes?
Jesus described the sign of his presence, not to point out something that humans could see with their eyes, but to help them discern something that would occur in heaven. Thus, Jesus said: “The kingdom of God is not coming with striking observableness.” (Luke 17:20)
Read this: Jesus Christ says in His Holy Bible that no man knows the day or hour of His second coming, not even the angels. And that includes JW.

it's generally not the norm, in the US.

In the instances where kids are identified as brilliant for their ages, they might be enrolled in a special program or special school with others who are the same. Not sure if that's what happened here.

bawomolo stated in one thread it took him 4.5 years to complete his first degree. And he categorically denied the possibility of getting an engineering degree in three years.

rather puzzling.

maybe it's easier in chicago, perhaps.
How can a stranger's educational achievements at a young age befuddle you.

1914 was the beginning of an epoch. After 1914 the following wars where more destructive than ever before. From WWI on, the nations started using airplanes, tanks, subs, poison gas, bombs, etc. Definitely a turning point. Yes there were wars before 1914 but never like this. One of the US presidents even said more people have died in the 20th Century than all of previous war before. Definitely a turning point.
Still, Jesus Christ did not come to the world in 1914.

I' M A JOURNALIST WORKING IN THE UK

secondly I Know someone who is bringing a company to Nigeria, Africa. Due to security i cannot reveal the name and what they do for now and they are currently looking for people with great minds, young and creativity. The conglomerate company is owned by a very young Nigerian business man who is not even a British citizen but based here. The truth is only 'creative, imagining African individual will gain from this', but i think programmers will a lot (this am not sure).

This company's number one prime amazing mission is that they want to create over 93000 jobs in 5years and believe me when i was told about this mission, i was so happy that finally someone can show love to our people especially when its coming from just one individual who has no root politically apart from who they know cuz obviously you need to know to get somewhere anywhere in the world.

This has nothing to do with election/ political or any religious , but if you have studied abroad or back home in Nigeria or anywhere in Africa and you truly understand what you have been taught and can make a difference in it or what you did was a 'self taught' class and you surely can affect peoples live positively with it, then this is for you.

When the company comes around you will know by yourself that THIS IS THE COMPANY I READ ABOUT and enough information will be available on every outlets or media source.

Finally the change we all want
huh And we are supposed to believe your information?
