Lights, camera, Africa Movies are uniting a disparate continent, and dividing it too AN AFRICAN academic with a coiffed mane is sipping coffee in a Ghanaian airport when he spots a pulpy Nigerian film on an overhead screen. “A travesty, a grave crime,” he splutters. “Such slowpoke images should never be shown in this country. They are veritably poisoning our culture.” It is hard to avoid Nigerian films in Africa. Public buses show them, as do many restaurants and hotels. Nollywood, as the business is known, churns out about 50 full-length features a week, making it the world’s second most prolific film industry after India’s Bollywood. The Nigerian business capital, Lagos, is said by locals to have produced more films than there are stars in the sky. The streets are flooded with camera crews shooting on location. Only the government employs more people. . . http://www.economist.com/node/17723124 |
texazzpete:He should have stayed back home. Declining to attend the 'black' event wouldnt have been a setback to his status as the first 'black' president of the USA. But his dozing off only embarrassed him. |
Some senior students who had plotted to beat up a junior student were disciplined by the school authorites. Out of revenge, they (according to what I heard) threatened to kill the boy. The ring leader was well feared in school because he was very wicked. So, one of the teachers immediately alerted the boy's parents to inform them of this development that could jeopardize his well being. The parents promptly arrived. It was on a school day when they arrived and that day, I saw an angry mother screaming obscenities while she picked up a big stone and hunted for the senior student. The guy was out of sight, but I was perplexed by her conduct considering the level of terror the guy inflicted on us junior students. I asked myself "Hasnt this woman heard of the atrocities of this senior student and that her very act could send him into a rampage and in the process beat her up to dead?" Either she heard or not, but she did not care, she was determined to deal with that bully, but she couldnt get a hold of him. Case was dismissed, and the student, I think was expelled. This later on became a sobering lesson to me in my later years, that any loving mother, would risk their life to defend her children. Then, I did not reason that far. Another one was when a junior student was punished by a senior student. Just as he was serving his punishment (he was kneeling down) his mother appeared on the scene in a 504 with his elder brother. The boy rushed at them and reported the injustices. Whereupon his elder brother attacked the senior student and they got into it. The distressed mother tried to separate these two warring guys to no avail. In the end, the fight came to an end, and the younger brother temporarily left home with his family members. As they drove off the campus, some angry students (I wasnt involved in it) threw pebbles at her car, while the mother (I know her quite well) retaliated by pouring invectives and curses at us. The words she spewed out was horrible but I cant justify the actions of my school mates. Despite the commotion, there wasnt a riot, and her windshields and car windows did not suffer any major damage. However the school lost the younger boy later on when he withdrew from campus to a different institution. My experiences in boarding house was I would put it, full of drama. |

One of the ring leaders who plotted this group was well feared in school because he was very wicked. So, one of the teachers immediately alerted the boy's parents over their son's well being, and the parents arrived on campus immediately. That day, (to my shock), the mother of the young boy was so incensed that she hunted for the senior student just by the dormitory. With my own eyes, I saw this angry woman pick up a big stone and ran after the senior student screaming obscenities at him. The guy was out of sight, and I was perplexed. I was like, "Hasnt this woman heard of the atrocities of this senior student and that her very act could send him into a rampage and in the process beat her up to dead. The woman was fearless in her anger. Case was dismissed, the student, I think was expelled. This later on became a sobering lesson to me in my later years, that any loving mother, would risk their lives to defend their children's lives. Then, I did not reason that far. It's what my people, Akwa Ibom, say "Afia Itong" The distressed mother tried to separate these two lions to no avail. In the end, the fight came to an end, and the younger brother temporarily left home with his family members. Surprisingly, her windshields and windows did not suffer any major damage, but in the long run, the boy withdrew from school to a different institution. Boarding school then was something else. |

Na new thing for Naija?, as far back as 94, banks used to go on strike thereby frustrating people's chances of withdrawing money from their account. |
Give this man a chance. If it was a white man, we would be out celebrating. |

Nigeria lacks the maintenance culture. Once a building/edifice is commissioned, that's it. When I flew into the USA from MM Airport, I dazzled my coworkers on the beauty of the airport and unfortunately boasted that it was finer than the airports in the USA. One lady confessed that she's heard so. Imagine how I felt when I flew out of San Francisco Airport and days later, landed at Murtala Mohammed Airport. The difference was clear, it was disappointing to see the inefficiency of our airport. I dont know if it was national pride that stirred the passion to talk glowingly about our airport. |
shadrach77:I read about the Ajayi story, but she came out to deny it, and some journalist wondered if the girl was suffering from HIV. remember that's when the AIDS story was beginning to make news in the country. Na dem alone know the truth. |

Perrito4u:Read this: Jesus Christ says in His Holy Bible that no man knows the day or hour of His second coming, not even the angels. And that includes JW. http://bible.cc/matthew/24-36.htm |
tpia1:How can a stranger's educational achievements at a young age befuddle you. |
Even, remember the Aba women's riots of 1929? It goes to show you that the notion that African women were all submissive is flawed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Igbo_Women's_War |
Why not? is she not my wife? |
Perrito4u:Still, Jesus Christ did not come to the world in 1914. |

How many bawomolo were on nairaland? Cos, the one that I used to read of was a staunch moslem. Another report says he was an atheist. |
http://www.lipstickalley.com/f50/graduate-student-shot-killed-his-south-suburban-home-269166/index2.html Still find it hard to believe it. Are they any nairalanders who know/knew him personally that can verify this information? |
What ![]() Is this a sick joke or what ? |

Jessicablo: And we are supposed to believe your information? |
renewnaija:Same here, though I havent read Anthills of the savannah, of all his novels that I have read, Arrow of God is my favorite. |
Yeah, I do. I think I would like to settle in Nigeria and come over to Yankee and Europe for the summer holidays. But I no go lie you sha, the American lifestyle is not easy to give up. Look at life's conveniences like constant electricity, water, groceries . . . |
And private universities were supposed to be better than Nigerian public universities? Teachers not paid for six months at a private university? Coming from a private institution, I am shocked. |
Interesting, would like to know more about Africa in the precolonial times. |
