@manny4life, can we agree that the decision to proceed with takeoff by the pilot was a bad decision? Would you also agree with me that it is not uncommon to proceed with takeoff, given the flap alarm, provided that the pilot believes that, if enough lift is not achieved, then he could safely abort takeoff?

If you are honest, you'd agree that the pilot planned to abort the flight in case the flaps failed, but aborting the flight was impossible because the aircraft was not air worthy in the first place. ko kwa?

donedy: Point of correction, flaps do not generate lift, it's just part of an aircraft control surface used for pitching. All lift comes from the thrust that is being generated by the engines.

In this scenario, both the inability of the flaps to deploy and the lost of power from one of the engine lead to the crash. If I should analyze what happened, the pilots took off from the run way pitching the plane at a wide angle of attack (aoa). However, when it's time to pitch down or reduce the angle of attack of the aircraft after the pilot might had completed the ascension stage, the flaps developed faults. Moreover, the lift-to-drag (L/D) ratio tends to be very low at the end of ascending stage, which if not properly control will stall the aircraft, i.e. the aircraft will loose lift not matter the thrust the engine is producing.

To cut all the technical jargon, at the end of the ascension stage, the pitch was high (wide angle of attack) and the flaps used for controlling the pitch developed fault, the aircraft stalled due to low L/D ratio and came crashing down.
And there you have it!!

This airplane was unfit for takeoff in the first place. It is irresponsible to try to lay the blame primarily on pilot error.

icon aus: so u re blaming the Minister and not the pilot . people re unfair in this world . plane occurs every where including USA etc . U guys re terrible and bigots
Yes, I blame the people who are responsible for air safety. That plane should not have been allowed to take off from any airport in the first place.

manny4life: Yes flaps generate lift, however, he forgot to deploy the flaps...

Both engines were running but where they generating enough thrust for him to lift?
Stop misinforming people. That partiucular aircraft had the capacity to take off by utilizing the flaps or take off without engaging the flaps. The alarm was to allow the pilot to decide whether to abort the takeoff, or signal a takeoff without flap engagement. The pilot apparently chose to proceed without engaging the flaps but because the aircraft was not air worthy in the first place, we had the crash.

I hold those who are charged with air safety including madame ministress squarely responsible for this mishap. Don't get it twisted, dolo.

Jakumo: Holy Cow! Taking off with the flaps audio warning hollering means the flaps were either not deployed at all, were incorrectly set for the takeoff weight and runway length, or were just selected LATE, during the takeoff roll.

Of the three possibilities, the most likely is that the pilot was late in deploying flaps, whereby the audio flaps warning continued to blare during the takeoff roll as the flaps slowly extended to the selected position. Normal protocol calls for takeoff flaps to be set BEFORE advancing throttles and releasing the brakes at the runway threshold, so the pilot did make a MAJOR procedural error, if the cockpit voice recorder is to be believed.
If you read the AIB report carefully, you would have noted that this aircraft could take off without the flaps. If the pilot made a decision to ignore the warning regarding the flaps, he must have taken the necessary steps to bypass the flap supported take off protocol. I am more inclined to believing that the aircraft was simply not air worthy - signaling another failure of Madam ministress and her ministry.

This is the first time that the Blackbox from a crash has been analysed in Nigeria. The authorities used a facility which was yet to be inaugurated to perform the analyses: Hear AIB officials:

“AIB will analyse the black box at its newly constructed accident investigation bureau office in Abuja.

“Though, the laboratory is yet to be inaugurated, we will take the black box there for analysis to ascertain the causes of Thursday’s accident and how we can prevent a future occurrence.

“However, if we encounter any challenges while doing that, we may contact our foreign partners for assistance,”
We now know why an exception was made in this case and the blackbox was not sent abroad as it is customarily done.

In Nigeria, even the blackbox recording can be doctored for political gains. Don't let them put the wool over your eyes. No sane pilot will risk his own life by ignoring such a warning and take off anyway, unless he is a kamakaze pilot. Nonesense!!

Afam4eva: What are the minister's sackable offense in this case?
The worst 2 and a half years in Nigeria's aviation history shoud be enough to make a change in leadership of that ministry. It does not have to be a sack. She could resign gracefully or be reassigned by the President.
Politics › Re: Senators Call For Resignation Of Stella Oduah by nduchucks: 1:03pm On Oct 10, 2013
Afam4eva: Impeachment can come if the president has violated the laid down rules as stipulated in the constitution or has performed below par and the aviation ministry is under his purview. So, if you blame the Aviation minister, why not the president? Why Odua and not the NCAA boss? The NCAA was created for a particular purpose which makes it not directly under the Aviation ministry.
Oga, what are the President's impeachable offenses in this case? I sense Igboman trickry in your dialogue.
Politics › Re: Senators Call For Resignation Of Stella Oduah by nduchucks: 12:56pm On Oct 10, 2013
We really do not need to tribalize this issue. We've had too many fatal mishaps during Stella's term and instead of hearing sober pronouncements and her comprehensive plan for improving air transportation safety, we hear unapologetic comments from her.

I think the President needs to do the right thing and replace her.

Some are designed for interaction and inter-exchange and others are designed never to interact but to be perceived or experienced from safe distance.
Humans, as part of these phenomenon, are designated the custodians of life on earth and are taught the secrets of the elements and ecology and cosmic cycles for the benefit of sustenance.

Ifa is an ancient manuscript that contains these secrets.[/quote]The above is a bunch of crap! This ancient manuscripts that contain these secrets were privately revealed to you ko? LWKMD Show us the manuscripts, we will not accept your deception on its face.

Some have wondered, why are there no rich babalawos or why are there no formulas for electricity in Ifa.

Babalawos are like monks. Monks live an austere life.
I dey laugh o.

The reason for the poverty of babalawos is that they are essentially uneducated, without marketable skills, and most are illiterates. I'm sorry if this hurts your feelings, but what I said is true of those babalawos I saw and spoke with from Abeokuta to Ibadan, to Oyo to Ijebu and beyond.

Katsumoto: grin grin grin grin

If you are sincere that you want to gain some knowledge, then you can start with any of the following books.

Some Aspects of Yoruba Aesthetics – Babatunde Lawal
The Yoruba Concept of Human Personality – Wande Abimbola
Black Critics and Kings: Hermeneutics of Power in Yoruba Society – Andrew Apter

When you are done with at least one, you can return to this thread and then we can proceed to have a discussion.
How convenient of you! You don't have any problem with issuing rebuttals with up to 8 bulleted items when you are challenged on this same thread, but you now want me to go and read a whole book before you will answer my very simple question to you. If you have no real knowledge of Ifa, there is nothing shameful about making an admission.

The vast majority of 'authentic' babalwos and Ifa priests are illiterates and very unsophisticated. Trust me, I've travelled far and wide within the SW and these people are outright dumb, sorry to say (most of them still believe that anything that goes up must come down due to gravity - mumus). You have an opportunity to summarize the Ifa philosophy for us and i will not accept the cop out that one has to be Yoruba to understand. So lets have it, educate us please.

Irresponsible husbands will not exhaust all available options to save his family but will go into counseling with the primary topic of discussion being the dissolution of the marriage.

We Nigerians must act like the proverbial responsible husband who will leave no stone unturned, with the exception of the nuclear option, in protectiing and ensuring that the marriage remains intact.

The resulting loss of life which you fools are courting will devour your mini nations. Nuff said.

National grazing routes won't solve the problem. What those herdsmen need to do is stop their outdated nomadic rearing lifestyle completely, and migrate to a settled ranch system.

The cold fact is that this breakup wish of the elite NLer who are opportuned to have internet access, is shared by a minute minority of Nigerians.

Most of the loud mouth NLers who yell Breakup at every opportunity, do not have the resources, influence, or power to make it happen.

These wishful thinkers are depending on the 'owners of Nigeria', bunkering militants, and anyone but themselves, to make it happen.

The truth of the matter is that the vast majority of 150million Nigerians including the owners of Nigeria, do not wish for a breakup. Dreamers can keep on dreaming.

The average Nigerian is more concerned about meeting the basic needs of his/her family. Na only people wey don belle full or wey dey suffer frustration for diaspora dey champion this breakup.

Not to worry, Army go take care of una needs.

Ngwakwe: Census and constituency delineation were farce, Local Governments and States were created by the North and for the North.

Kano and Jigawa States were formally one State with lesser population than Lagos State in previous census before 2006. Can you imagine;

Hausa/Fulani will hold every region hostage using the abracadabra they put in place to rig decisions to their favour.

Lagos State - 20 LGA

(Kano + Jigawa) State - 44 + 29 = 71 LGA

Never Again
You don't seem believe in the constitutional review process lead by your brother Ekweremadu and you are willing to throw out the 2006 census. Have you ever bothered to find out who the members of the NPC were in 2006 before throwing out wild accusations. My brother if you people have lost complete faith in this country, why not just declare your own country again and leave?

Ngwakwe: In my opinion, Nigeria will continue as one Country but the status quo will definitely be altered.
If the goal is to alter the status quo, why didn't the President throw his full weight on the ongoing constitutional review process and press for these alterations? Positive changes would be made through this process than a useless confab which does not have any legal tooth.

You expect to achieve what a civil war with the cost of millions of lives could not achieve, by conducting this sham of a national confab, ko? Get real, sadly, it ain't going to happen without sacrifices worse that the cost of the first civil war.

This conference will have equal representation per group. We're not deciding democracy, we're deciding people's fate. Just like one Nler told you above, British didnt consider population before merging us. They considered group. I think its time Hausa came as Hausa, Fulani came as Fulani, Berom as Berom, Ogoni as Ogoni, etc.
You people need to come up with a better definition of your 'equal representation per group'. What constitutes a group? Are you suggesting that the Igbos will be 1 group, the Hausa 1 group, the Ogonis 1 group and the Beroms yet another group? And you now want each group to have equal say? If so, you are delusional.

Listed below are a dozen tribes (there are over 360 more of these) and their states, pray tell, will these have a group each?

(1) Holma Adamawa
(2) Hona Adamawa
(3) Ibeno Akwa lbom
(4) Ichen Adamawa
(5) Jaba Kaduna
(6) Gwarri Niger
(7) Jaku Bauchi
(8 ) Jara Bauchi
(9) Jibu Adamawa
(10) Jidda-Abu Plateau
(11) Jimbin (Jimbinawa) Bauchi
(12) Jirai Adamawa

If you would rather lump them together as Hausas, maybe the Ogonis will be absorbed by the Igbos and you people will speak for them at the conference! What a plan cheesy

Oga, this planned confab is a sham which will be used to siphon more funds towards 2015 elections. Shine ya eyes
