Ok, like I said, such question can be solved using the derivative.


D(t) = -0.02x^3 + x^2 + 7

Derivative = -0.06t^2 + 2t

now the derivative is a quadratic equation, which after solving u get two options : X= 0 v X = 100\3

we also know that the domain of the derivative is from (Zero to + infinity) showing that negative numbers are not valid since it's an upward movement.


Now having this informations from the derivative we can make a table of values_{which I don't know how to construct on Nl} knowing that the most important information we have are the two values obtained after solving the quadratic equation of the derivative, : X= 0 v X = 100\3 . and the domain of the derivative as well ( Zero to +infinity).

now,having obtained these informations, all u have to do is substitute them in the real equation and one of them would give u the highest hight reached by the balloon. : D(t) = -0.02x^3 + x^2 + 7

giving :

D(0) = -0.02(0)^3 + (0)^2 + 7 = [/b]7

D(100\3) =-0.02(100\3)x^3 + (100\3)^2 + 7 [b] = approximately 377,37 meters;


As there is no table to view this, I would explain :

Since the domain of the derivative is ( Zero to +infinity) u have to apply this to the main equation as well and u find out that :

from instant Zero to any other positive number. . . the balloon continues to travel upwards, And when the time turns 100\3 -- the balloon is on it's highest hight. u know this because . . . any number ---- positive or negative u substitute apart from ( 100\3), the answer u would get would either be negative, or less than the answer u would get if u substitute (100\3) -- showing u that instant 100\3 is the instant where the balloon reaches it's highest hight. So u have :


D(100\3) =-0.02(100\3)x^3 + (100\3)^2 + 7 = approximately 377,37 meters;

for the instant which is 100\3 = approximately 33 mins ; 20 sec


You can prove my answer by substituting any values u want at all to my first equation, and see if it would give u higher than 377,37 meters.

So . . .When it comes to UK and US, you're right, I mean speaking from personal experience, when My family got to Portugal, and my siblings and I enrolled in an English speaking school _ " American international school" -- And of course I was able to cope and everything, u can Imagine in our final Exam in Maths I got the maximum grade. So, there I was thinking I was a maths genius, until, my parents decided that we change to a Portuguese speaking school due to some circumstance, I went back to the same grade I finished in the American school, Thinking I would have no problem copping with maths, But not until I saw what they were doing did my brain scatter! -- It was nothing alike, They were treating the bases for Calculus, treating Functions, limits etc meanwhile in the American school, they were still dwelling in Geometry and trigonometry, a topic that is almost history for the Portuguese speaking schools in the same grade as them. I even showed the maths teacher in my new school the maths we did in the American school, and according to her, it's the "old Maths". And maths syllable has changed. But in America? -- yea right!



Soo. . . when u say white people, u definitely mean, UK and US, Cuz every one knows that when it comes to Education they are the ones that u can't compare with other countries. -- well, with some exceptions of course.

Thats unsolvable simply because in an equation - which is not simultaneosuly equal - it is very impossible to find a value when there are two unknowns.

In your equation - which I assume is -0.02x³ + x³ + 7

two values are not defined - the value of x and the value of D - which is the unknown - if we assume that T is the minutes since it had been thrown up.

Also you are asking for the values of the distance and the time instance at which it reached that height? Confusing realy.

Distance = speed/time

You need more information to solve that your equation.

But, nope, u don't acctually need more information to solve it. Such question is solved with the derivative. -- ( I will post the solving and answer in a sec, let me type it up)

What is the maximum hight reached by the balloon? And at what instante did this occur?

Wish I could be of any help, but I didn't even go to secondary school in Naija so . . . I don't know the specific topic that are treated in maths there.
I feel u, because it's very difficult to get any kind of help related to such stuffs in Naija I mean, here, your teacher is available for you 24\7.

Good luck, but I would advice u to figure out where or wht your problem is when it comes to maths and learn how to tackle it Just find someone, a neighbour, friend, someone u can talk face to face with. Or hire a private teacher, because if u have problem with maths, it's not something u can resolve on line
I also used to have problem with maths, ( I never understood the whole solving thing, X, Y etc) , but due to my new school here and constant help 4rom my bro, maths is my fav subject now.


-------------- just find someone that can help u face to face, and try to figure out where u have the most difficulties --- but if u don't have, -------- online won't be that hopeless thou, I mean . . . even in this thread, u can simply speak up and say a part of a specific topic that u don't understand and we try to explain to u. And u continue asking and so on.
