Americans are one of the most pampered people in the entire universe that a 62 year old American may not have experienced the stress and suffering a 21 year old Nigerian back home is currently experiencing.A country where people voted a cartoon characater to be president. Thank you Berliner1.. it reminds of my old friend that travelled to France few years ago, applied for Asylum but they denied him and i was asking him how Europe, lol this guy started sayinf trash that he wouldn't advise me to come bla bla. You won't believe he stayed up to 1yr he was kicked back to Lagos,Nigeria.

I just got to Germany late last year its roughly 6months now and i must i am enjoying myself and all he said is totally different from what i have seen so far.. why cuz i am staying here legally.

Sir, if I even begin to tell you how I have had quite a roller-coaster ride on this site since I joined....you wouldn't believe me...or maybe you would. It was the reason I deactivated so many times within my 16-17 month stay here on N.L.....
Nigeria has a terrible reputation across the world (sorry to say)...ranging from being extremely mean to being labeled the "419" online romance and credit card scammers of the world..to being some of the most polygamous and corrupt men on earth.
Now those aren't my words...so don't shoot me.
But I know that some brilliant minds (my dad being one) hail from that country.
I don't like to get involved in politics, hence the reason I don't visit the "Foreign Affairs" room here on N.L.
I don't like to speak about the politics of America...cause...well....I don't know all of the in's-and-out's.
We have major problems too....but I just believe in being wise about how to approach issues.

You have raised some very important points/issues that are both personal and general,so i will take time to address them in parts as time permits,somehow we are all here to learn.
Part 1...First,am a nice guy with strong conviction and with exemplary attitude,these i will not trade for anything.
Concerning your last line,well am not responsible for what you do with your emotions,its yours and you can toy with it as you want.am only being simple and direct.i have no apology for my style.
My sister,lets be frank with ourselves,you are a Nigerian by virtue of being born by a Nigerian father,its part of our culture and elsewhere too but you may choose to claim any nationality of your choice(glad you mentioned dual nationality) but when your story is told,you would be addressed as an African American from Nigeria,lets leave it at that.
You see when you try to learn about Nigeria,you may not get the true pictures of what you need from forum like this per see because people will only give opinions based on their personal experiences.If i may suggest,just stick to what your dad told you(good or bad) and make your judgement from that or you may choose to take a trip down to Nigeria and experience those things first hand.(A friend from CA,who's not even from Nigeria whatsoever but has so much interest in the country did exactly that).
As per Nigeria having a bad reputation,well one opinion doesn't count for others,people with different experience will probably have different opinions about certain things.
Let me make this clear,i don't have any personal issue with the OP whatsoever and i guess she knows that too,i only differ in her approach that's all and i owe it a duty to fact check and balance every statement where possible without going personal,I remember i suggested she just sticks to her experience only in the US then we can all make meaningful and positive contributions but when you make a blank comparison between two unequaled countries,one is being described in glowing terms and deride the other,you are likely going to stir up opposing views.I think she's cool.

Truth is that some of us living in Nigeria have devised different techniques to maintain our sanity. It is a hard job to remain focused to the pursuit of personal goals in the midst of chaos. Getting worried daily over issues that one has no control is energy draining. I think the best one can do is to keep on enlightening the electorates (few reasonable ones) about their power at the next polls.

Do you know that Nigerian newspapers now dedicate two pages daily for crimes and vices in our society? They hardly promote innovation, intellectualism or ingenuity among the youths.

Even if I didn't have a direct descent to Nigeria through my dad....I still may have ventured on this site and decided to want to know more about this particular country...which is something that Nigerians should want Black Americans to do.

You have said some things about the U.S......that I find troubling...but let me not de-rail the thread.

For the records,Adultery is NOT a crime in the US under the federal laws but few states that still operates such laws only put minor penalties as deterrent,reason we hardly hear about such lawsuits.
Meanwhile sharia laws (mostly practice in the north) and customary laws (in the south) are all part of nigeria laws which makes it a crime under the Nigeria laws with varying degree of punishments and I guess you have seen or heard about its executions.

She can't be forced out. He'll have to divorce her properly. Adultery is a crime in many states to start with. The wife will prove adultery and you know who the court is gonna protect in that situation. Father remains obliged (see? not a choice) for the well-being of the girls (child support, seeing them, etc.), and who knows? Maybe alimony for the wife, shared/joint custody, etc. sharing properties, or worst case scenario, the government gives assistance to the woman if the guy's financially incapable. The day he becomes financially capable, they'll go after him. These are examples of things in place. I could go on and on.

Not only are these things in place, they are strictly enforced! And before you think it's a feminist attack on men, it cuts both ways too. Women share their properties their husbands, pay alimony, etc. too.

Now that I've cleared that up and you see what I'm trying to say, tell me what's in place in Nigeria that protects her in that scenario... and tell me how it's enforced.

Let me answer you this way,the way you bring US vs NIG issue is funny,if it's a law and it's working in US,then it must be a law that's working also in Nigeria without considering the variables such as level of education,religion,cultural and tribal differences,(customary laws still exist in Nigeria) you should think of that too.
Adultery is a criminal offence in Nigeria and it's enforced more than it is in the US (hope you never forget sharia law dey sha),also those other protective laws you mentioned above are also laws in Nigeria though they don't really enforce them that much but it is changing now.there are many social advocacy groups in Nigeria who take up some of these issues on behalf of those that are not privileged.Also,with current exposure to western cultures,sadly people are taking up those fights real good now.people should just know their rights and limitations period.
My believe is just that couples shouldn't see marriage as competition with the mindsets of what to gain should in case things go south as you said,there should be a lot of compromise and balance.reason we have many marriages crashing as quick as they start these days due to over exposure to western cultures.am not against western cultures though,they have the good,bad and ugly sides too.

I made it clear he's free to want a son, and said I didn't have a problem with it. One's response was to tell me about someone with 5 kids. What's the relevance? They compromised in their situation, so... end of story. Another one said he has no problem with daughters, good for you.

Empathy is lost on some people. Tell them there's suffering in Borno or Ebonyi, they'd tell you about the paradise in Abuja or Ikoyi. So? Does that nullify the situation in Borno or Ebonyi? I made it clear this woman has had all her babies through surgery and is obviously concerned and not interested in having more.

I'm depressed? I'm sending suitors away because I won't settle for less? Lmao.

I'm here again to share my thoughts with you. So, I woke up to news of a cousin of mine who had a baby today. Great news, right? No one knew she was pregnant until today when she announced her baby's birth. Now let me tell you the story before today.

She had a daughter before marrying her husband. She had 2 more kids with her husband, all daughters. All these kids were through surgery. They aren't doing well financially. In fact, she complains everyday about how things are horrible in their family financially. The husband kept pressuring her for a son. So... she succumbed to getting pregnant again and feared what the family would think/say so she didn't tell anyone. Guess what? She just had another daughter.

I can't even imagine what she's going through right now. It's 2018! People are still going about the "you must give me a son" thingy. It's not a crime to want a son, I don't care but why must the woman be the one to suffer for things like that? She's married. Suppose her husband cheats on her and the other woman gives him a son, what is going to protect my cousin in the event this man and his family try to frustrate or chase her out?

These are the things that piss me the hell off and get me mad when people are talking about "stay here and make your money". Everything is not money. If my cousin was here, she'd be protected by law against all this madness. If she says NO MORE KIDS, NO MORE KIDS! I wouldn't worry one bit. Now, she has 4 daughters, only God knows the state her health is in and how happy she is.

I'm so mad today, it's a shame how backward Nigeria still is.

Here is the angle from which I view our discussions: I disagree with you with respect to the saying that the country does not have adequate funds - Alamieyeseigha embezzled, Ibori, Diezani, Akpobolokemi, Dazuki and co, and Yakubu NNPC also illegally licked monies from their respective 'offices'.... all these are from the known embezzlers with known figures in the most recent years.
If these funds were put into positive uses, we would have made progress to make us (the 25-35 year olds) stay behind.
If our politicians make a conscious effort to start little by little - we would have have moved from non-developing to a developing nation. For now there is very little development, I'll close with Obasanjo's $16Billion poured into the power sector and there has been nothing to show for it.

I came to the US for a graduate degree and was offered a scholarship in thousands of dollars.. I am yet to hear of any Nigerian school that offers even a 10% 'discount' to incoming students based on their academic performance. The academic sector does not love us.

Loans for SME's or credit facilities like mortgage?? Very few private ventures can survive in a hostile environment. Baba, the economists do not love us.

I personally showed so much love to the country but got none in return - the future was bleak though I could consider myself an average income earner. Our employers do not love us.

I pity our soldiers and policemen, their salary and welfare package is a disaster.

The system isn't built to work, government should fix infrastructures and enforce the laws then the citizens will take it up from there.

Nice write up Macky,I cant remember staying this long on a thread but what can i do now? Nigeria must be better,and it should be the project every citizen must signed up to.
I understand the system is messed up and need fixing,we are still the ones to fix it somehow.let every citizen be responsible one way or the other,do the right things right,may be the leaders who are also products of the society would begin to sit tight.that is the position am taking anyway,is a call to both the leaders and the followers.
You see we need to change our cultural orientations too,an average Nigerian wants to live big,big cars,big houses and many wives-that's what the society consider achievements.look at the credit facilities you mentioned,how many percentage pay back loans collected from banks?.that selfish and greedy mentalities,me and my family only,reasons a lot embezzle and abuse their various positions and the remaining resources left behind if any is not enough to go round,i remember there was a National pension scheme and National insurance health scheme NHIS,the same Nigerians never allowed these stuffs to work,yet we blame the system,who are the system,are we not ?.
Also, our corporate and private organisations need to get involved,they get bail out funds,make profits and share among themselves without investing in the system,even some of them that try to do something are doing that for profit as well (MTN project fame comes to mind)most things that work well abroad are done and supported by their citizens because of the love they have for themselves,most endowment funds schools and hospitals use for scholarships,researches and healthcare purposes are funded by private organisations and individuals.
we still have a long way to go but we should be positive,persevere and ready to pay the price at all cost.

Passports are available in Lokoja and you get it same day. Maybe Lagos and Abuja, I don't know. It's not a general problem.
What I know is that if you apply online to get it, the immigration office will not recognise it.
I asked the officers why it is so the last time I went there and I was told to apply online and see the outcome.
Nigeria is still an analog country with most workers still in the analog years. The country needs to embrace technology to catch up with others.

I know of two students who returned back from Sweden and another two from Finland who couldn't survive there after graduation. No work apart from menial newspaper distribution jobs or cleaning (God forbid) and the only option was to port back to Nigeria.
Almost N10 million on each of them gone down the drain. I told them with a skill, they may not have returned.

Aim for self employment and the sky will be your limit. With technological skills, one can still survive even in expensive Zurich!

POWER CUT IN UK

When I moan, kick and curse, it’s because I believe we deserve better in Nigeria. We are not beneath oyinbo; they don’t have special brain � or more human than us. They are just better organised, serious, and love their country.

I woke up today at about 7.45am to discover that ‘NEPA’ had taken power. I checked everywhere, then the meter. The meter’s panel was blank. I knew it must be something serious. I was not sure if the neighbours had power.

Since there was no power, no WIFI. But I have mobile data on my phone. So I googled ‘Power Cut.’ I saw something about the U.K. power network. It says call 150 if there’s power cut. I did. The pleasant customer service apologised and checked their system after I gave her post code. She explained that it’s the second phone call from my area. She apologised again and told me engineers will be around the area around 8.30am. I gave my phone number and she promised to update me as progress is made.

Few minutes to 9, I got texts that the fault is from a substation and they are working at it. They promise to restore power by 10-11am.

11am, there was a knock on my door. “Sir, it’s a major fault, we don’t know if we would be able to finish today, though we are working had at it. It’s an underground cable problem; we need to dig the roads.”

“But, we shall be connecting you to a generator so you can have power while we sort out the problem.”

I didn’t bribe NEPA. They apologised profusely for invading my privacy and having to pass generator cables through my letter hole.

Am I impressed? Well, not really. I have lived here long enough to be conditioned to expect things like this.

It is all about conditioning. If you are conditioned in a shithole, your expectation is shithole. You become a mediocre. You hail idiots for giving you 3 hours power every other day. It’s not your fault. You are a product of crap �, your expectation is crap.

It’s 9.02pm, it has been raining all day and the engineers in front of my house are still working to fix my power. They worked in the rain all through.

And I’m still enjoying free power from their generator. ��

I am not even a Senator. I’m just a bloody Babaloja from Wakanda.

But every single citizen/resident, from the lowest to the highest enjoy the same privilege.

This is what I hope for in Nigeria. And we must work and fight for it.

It’s a war between us and those filthy supporters of crooks and rogues. We must crush them.

We are living in self denial if we continue to compare Nigeria with the likes of US and co.first we don't have the resources they have and no government can do much without adequate funding,take for an example, US proposed budget for infrastructures alone is in excess of $1trillion.most of these infrastructures are only in the transportation sector only(.road,airport,ports and railways) but Nigeria is struggling to spend mere $25billion on a whole budget.
Secondly,their citizens love themselves, they love their countries,they are patriotics but we are not,remember most of these services are run by private entities with no inputs from theIr governments,yet they give excellent services.for example my money is still stuck with Arik airline since last year from my mum aborted trip from new York,no apology no refund nothin.this can't happen in the US.the citizens need to help the government succeed else we would keep having same conversation from one generation to another.

When the OP created a thread with the title..is life abroad worths the stress and hype .ordinarily her memoirs was expected to answer that but let's just say it's a general question,the responses I read here are nauseating to say the least,the main reason people are giving is that of oh Nigeria is bad bla bla bla..and I asked myself,how did we get here?.you see we youths have all failed the nation.we have decided to tow the path of consumers instead of producers,we all want to eat of the National cake and all others with no contributions ,take for an example;during election period,we are no where part of the process (the America we talk about today,their youths fully participate in their electioneering process),we don't belong or affiliated to any political group or parties,we don't go to local council or ward meetings where we can influence manifestos,government policies and programs and few of us that managed to get a voters card see an election day as public holiday....a happy day where we unwind and watch football,we can't stand on the sun or stay on the long queue,we are conducting our own election on Twitter and nairaland,we see stuffs like "click like for Buhari and share for Atiku)).the market women are there in the queue, voting and electing one of their own into office and we are here complainin things are not moving right.until we change our mentality and be a stakeholders in the Nigeria project, I doubt if can ever get it right.

I can bet Nigeria can match that of US budget figure as an Oil producing nation but with the current level of corruption, Perhaps under a Spell too, Reverse is the case.

No nation can survive on a single natural resources only,they need human resources too.majority of the revenues those developed countries use to fund their budgets are from the citizens.their taxes and other obligations to their governments which sadly is not the case here.it's well..
