The significance of Ramadan

YESTERDAY, Moslems worldwide, including those in Nigeria began a 30 or 29-day fasting period in commemoration of this year's holy month of Ramadan. Following reported sighting of the new moon on Tuesday night, most Moslems by yesterday had already observed the first of the nightly special Taharawiy prayers to herald the season.

Although it is a yearly ritual, the significance of the month is never diminished by its regularity. It is a month of mandatory fasting for all Moslems, as enjoined by the Holy Koran in observance of one of the five pillars of Islam. Ramadan is a month of blessing, supplication and forgiveness of sin.

In the next 30 or 29 days all adherents of the Islamic faith will be required to abstain from eating, drinking and all earthly pleasures from dawn to dusk. Exemptions are few and these include mainly the aged, the sick, pregnant women and those involved in lengthy, tiring journey. Even then, most of these persons are required to observe the ritual, or make up for the number of days they missed as a result of their peculiar circumstances, once the circumstances abate.

By divine inspiration, the concept of Ramadan fasting is constant and multi-purposeful. First, it is a personal sacrifice by those who are privileged, to experience and share the pains and discomfort of those who are less privileged in order to empathise with and appreciate them. Second, Ramadan invokes a spirit of soberness that is necessary for total submission to the will of Allah, which is a central theme in Islam. Third, Ramadan promotes good health, as fasting has been proved to be a veritable elixir for physical and mental well-being.

Moslems are equally enjoined to be generous in providing support to the needy in cash or kind. While denying themselves, they are required to provide food for the hungry and to avoid anything that may be unholy. If indeed Moslems embrace the ideals and injunctions religiously, the effect on the society in terms of peace, progress and orderliness should be pronounced.

The values of Ramadan, to wit, forgiveness, sacrifice and chastity should be paramount to all Nigerians, as a means of correcting the ills and vices assailing the polity. If properly embraced, the teachings of Ramadan should help to move this country forward; a country in dire need of the values of tolerance, patience, understanding, kindness and forgiveness.

If we have all these in sufficient quantity and quality, there is no reason why the country should be up in arms against itself as evidenced in militant activities, armed robbery, murder, political assassination and all sorts of violent crimes afflicting the country. These vices have unfortunately reduced the value of life, besides constituting a direct affront to the doctrine in all the faiths, including Islam and Christianity.

We enjoin all Nigerians to take this year's Ramadan as an opportunity to eschew social vices. This is a chance for us all to recognise our waywardness and make amends for our departure from the laws of nature and God. We must be among the most hypocritical species in the world if our emotional embrace of religion and spirituality has only translated to a world of insecurity, want, poverty and backwardness of the magnitude in our land.

Political leaders have a major role to play to ensure that the values of Ramadan are reflected in the governance process. Incidentally, many of them are professed, devout Moslems, but they have been unable or unwilling to bring their religious convictions to bear on governance and in raising the quality of public life. They should change their ways. Islam indeed questions the validity of piety that is not backed by honesty, sincerity and steadfastness.

Government leaders should use this year's Ramadan and what it stands for to wage war on corruption, which has remained the greatest single cause of backwardness and misery in the country. In the spirit of the holy month, leaders at all tiers of government - Federal, State or Local - should display some greater concern about the security and welfare of Nigerians. The profligate manner in which leaders divert public funds to unproductive projects is disheartening and scandalous, in the face of grinding poverty among the masses.

One other value of the holy month is the hope it brings to people. It is the responsibility of the leadership elite to keep this hope alive. We wish the Moslem faithful and all Nigerians, the blessing and grace of the Almighty Allah .

The Garden Of Eden

A Brit, a Frenchman and a Russian are viewing a painting of Adam and Eve frolicking in the Garden of Eden.

"Look at their reserve, their calm," muses the Brit. "They must be British."

"Nonsense," the Frenchman disagrees. "They're naked, and so beautiful. Clearly, they are French."

"No clothes, no shelter," the Russian points out, "they have only an apple to eat, and they're being told this is paradise. Clearly, they are Russian."
