Nigeria has overtaken South Africa to become the continent's largest mobile market with now over 90 million subscribers, and yet market penetration stands at only around 60% in early 2012. Subscriber growth had slowed significantly during the global economic crisis, re-accelerated in 2010 but then slowed again in 2011. Much of the remaining addressable market is in the country's rural areas where network rollouts and operations are expensive. This in combination with declining ARPU levels is forcing the networks to streamline their operations and to develop new revenue streams from services such as third generation (3G) mobile broadband, mobile payments/banking, and others. At the same time the operators are rolling out national fibre backbone networks to support the ever increasing demand for bandwidth. At least two operators are rolling out fourth generation (4G) LTE networks.
How difficult it is to succeed in Nigeria's highly competitive mobile market became evident with the spectacular failure of Multi-Links in 2011 in which seasoned heavyweight Telkom South Africa lost almost its entire investment.
This report contains a market overview and analysis, key statistics, regulatory issues, profiles of major players, including financial results where available, and two scenario forecasts for the mobile market in 2013 and 2016. That Nigeria is the most populous nation in Africa and hence have more mobile networks subscribers than South Africa does not translate into hope. The welfare of the citizenry as well as their safety and security are the ingredients that translates into hope.Even in the communications sector you refered to, the quality of the service is what counts, not the number of people using the service and in Nigeria the quality is epileptic. people are losing hope in the entity called Nigeria because of constant lack of electricity,no portable drinking water(the rate of people that have perished for water-borne diseases are alarming),the death traps we call roads, archaic healthcare delivery system(people die for preventable and treatable illnesses)and the king of them all: insecurity of lives and properties.People are hopeful just because whatever harsh situation anyone is undergiong in life there is no other option apart from clinging on to hope. The hope for a better future is what keeps us on the move.I have no option other than to join the bandwagon of the hopefuls but certainly that hope will not blossom into positive change in my lifetime and maybe in the lifetime of every living Nigerian today, judging with the mess we are witnessing at the moment. |

Abagworo: From what I saw from a program on AIT, he was not comfortable. His house looked so old and unkept and he was a very sad man. He went as far as using his own mouth to complain of abandonment. I lost my value for many of his co-players because of that. I believe they should have initiated a form of rehabilitation for him and not Government. THE CORE ISSUE HERE IS OUR TRADITIONAL DISPOSITION TOWARDS MARRIAGE AND CHILD BEARING.AS EARLY AS THE FIRST YEAR OF MARRIAGE,THERE ARE EXPECTATIONS FROM ALL AND SUNDRY FOR CONCEPTION TO TAKE PLACE.WHEN A MARRIAGE GOES INTO THE SECOND AND THIRD YEAR WITHOUT THE WIFE CONCEIVING, ALL SORTS of PRESSURES WILL START MOUNTING ON BOTH THE HUSBAND AND THE WIFE. THESE PRESSURES INEVITABLY LEADS TO UNPLEASANT(?) SITUATIONS LIKE THESE, ALTHOUGH TO THE MAN AND HIS FAMILY MENBERS,IT IS A PLEASANT DEVELOPMENT.THIS KIND OF INCIDENT OCCURED IN MY OWN BACKYARD WHERE A COUPLE HAVE BEEN MARRIED FOR ABOUT THIRTEEN YEARS WITHOUT CHILDREN, THE MAN SECRETLY IMPREGNANTED A GIRL OUTSIDE AND BROUGHT HER IN JUST WHEN SHE WAS ABOUT TO DELIVER. SHE LATER GAVE BIRTH TO A BABY BOY.THIS TORE THE FAMILY INTO SHREDS.THE MAN IS LATE NOW.THIS IS A SOCIETAL PROBLEM.NOMATTER HOW DEEPLY A MAN LOVES HIS WIFE, IF THE MARRIAGE IS FRUITLESS,OR BLESSED WITH ONLY FEMALE CHILDREN, THERE IS ALWAYS FAMILY AND SOCIETAL PRESSURE THAT IS VERY DIFFICULT FOR THE MAN OVERCOME. THE HUSBANDS MOTHER WILL START MOANING FOR EITHER GRAND CHILDREN OR A MALE CHILD. WITH THE TRADITIONAL AFRICAN MINDSET LIKE OURS,WHERE CHILDREN ARE THE BE ALL AND END ALL IN MARRIAGES, IT IS VERY HARD FOR INCIDENTS LIKE THIS NOT TO RE-ENACT ITSELF. |

Okija_juju: Good Day Sir!!
Now nothing personal!! But a conspiracy theory is only a theory when you hear what exactly the conspiracy is. The guy only stated that his dad who was a pensionier had a "Conspiracy Theory" as to why pensioners are always made to travel back and forth for all sorts of verification. . . The least you could have done was ask the fellow what exactly his conspiracy theory was. . But you didnt know what his theory was, and yet went ahead to say "YOUR CONSPIRACY THEORY BAFFLES ME". I would ike to know what exactly you were baffled by as I am yet to even hear the theory let alone be baffled.
Mr President (Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Azikiwe Egberipapa) as it stands now is doing his best to bring the country under control. I find it rather unfair for people to accuse him of this and that all in the name of tongue-lashing the president. The president did not start corruption, The president did not destroy our security outfits, the president did not institute Boko Haram. . So when next you decide to talk trash about him, do well to remember say our contry don spoil for almost 35 years. . And No be Jonathan spoil am. The man is trying his best. You think he enjoys the fact that Boko Haram is making his adminstration hell?! Please!!
All I am saying is, disrespecting the President dont make you any wiser. . . If you were so intelligent, why arent you the President.
IBORI, like all other politicians in Nigeria was not arrested by the president. Its not the Job of the president to judge and sentence any person. . He has changed the EFCC head from Waziri to the new guy and thats all he can do. . . The problem starts from our juduciary down to the law enforcement agencies. . . He even changed the Inspector general of Police. . Wetin again you want!! DO you know how much it costs to prosecute a criminal abroad?! Do you think that justice is cheap?! Ask the U.K how much they spent on the Ibori case!! Corruption is not a weak animal!! Its vicious and fights back with all its strenght!! They started probing the Fuel Subsidy scam and an important office of one of the NNPC subsidiaries catches fire and burns to the ground together with all the evidence. . . Nna give Jonathan a Break abeg!! You think say to rule country na beans!!
I have realized that we are moving as a country!! In the right direction . . . slow but surely!!
God Bless Oga Goodluck Egberipapa Ebele Azikiwe Thankgod Freshair Jonathan!! THE BUCK STOPS AT THE PRESIDENTS DESK. |

Only-Rebel: Yes really. Feel safer in Nigeria than US. There are killers in every nooks and crannies in nigeria: The nigerian police, the pitiable road networks, lack of portable drinking water,no electricity, armed bandits and kidnappers on the loose, militant groups(boko-harams),preventable diseases, archaic healthcare delivery system, inept and totally corrupt law enforcement officers, elected representatives and public officers. There is no basis for comparism b/w an occassional lone rogue gunman/woman that creates havoc in the US and MUST,repeat,MUST be apprehended and successfully prosecuted, with the mayhem and lawlessness going on in nigeria. We all love our country dearly but please do not drag your patrotic zeal too far.The most vital segments of safety and security is law enforcements and healthcare delivery. The security and emergency services like the police, ambulance crew or fire fighters will be with you in a jiffy if need be,but in nigeria, you are practically on your own if any emergency situation befalls you.stories abounds of the nigerian police saying they do not have the manpower to respond to an emergency phone call or the fire fighters blaming lack of water for their inability to respond to an emergency fire outbreak.Just imagine how many pensioners died while awaiting their payments in nigeria. In the US, those responsible for that pension scam will rot in jail, but what do you think will happen to those pension crooks in nigeria?.Nothing.To me, they are killers, not fraudsters. |

chaircover: This is what makes me laugh when DK and family come here and insinuate that Nigerian women are lazy gold diggers.
Go to Nigeria and you will see women like this working hard and taking all sorts of risks to sustain their families. Do you think that all those market women sit down and someone comes to supply them with goods? many of them are up at the crack of dawn going to the wholesale market, bush, farm etc to source their wares. Same thing at night. Go to any main road at 9pm and it is these women you will see with a baby on their lap selling all sorts of things. Surely they all cant be widows or single parents.
One old mama sells amala to the shop girls in my complex. The mama is about 60. When I engaged her one day, I found out that she makes all the food herself. She wakes up at 4 and rushes to the market, then comes back to cook. One day I did not see her, so when I asked her the next day she said that some people didnt pay her up the road and so she didnt have enough money to go to the market the next day so she couldnt cook. when I asked her how much she was being owed she said N800. I couldnt beleive it. Women like this are not alone. Many many women are sustaining their families. Kudos to them all. Since when did endangering one`s life and the lives of members of the public reclassified as hardwork?.Both the biker and his passenger are lucky that Nigeria is a country where the rules of the road are neither adhered to nor enforced. |

Tgirl4real: Another thing that causes wahala is when the wife wants to control the relationship.
You want to determine wen your hubby wakes up, shower, go to work, return from work, what he eats @ work, who he eats with, the type of work he does, how he spends his money.(lol). You want to make every decision for him. All in the name of making your own contribution you dominate his life.
You determine everything in the family. He hardly says a word, u've said 10 and you hav an opinion on every matter. He doesn't know how to do anything well. Infact, you are competing the 'head' position with him. You are the only one that knows what is best for the kids. His opinion doesn't count.
If you are controlling, u will eventually turn your hubby to a puppet. When he wakes up from his slumber, you start having issues claiming that he has changed.
If you complain too much you chase him out into the hands of other women cos you are choking him.
The bible says it's better to live on the rooftop than to live with a nagging wife.
Just as we want our husbands to 'gbo ri du ro' and treat us right, we also have the responsibilty to treat him as the head he truly is and stop competing with him. If you are already married, your husband should consider himself extremely lucky b/c if you are practising all you`ve enumerated, your marriage will be one of the few without constant squabbles. And if you are not married, upload your picture for the single guys, you are probably the hottest marriage material on this forum.Marriages are very, very problematic nowadays but with a mindset like yours,a significant portion of the problems in marriages will melt away. |

I don't want to be fed to lions by some white racist farmer or shot like Lucky Dube. All these development you're talking of done by white people cannot be claimed by the average Sowetan. They are still suffering from post-apartheid paranoia (PAP) and PTS. Who wants to be killed when they suddenly run amok one day killing fellow Africans. They spent too much time being angry and violent, it is now firmly in their DNA. Respectable married folks like my humble self who have never indulged in any away "match" whatsoever need not bother about HIV testing or status. If you take away high rate of violent crime and the AIDS epidemic, which Nigerians in south Africa are a major contributory factor with their notorious reputation for intimate indiscipline South Africa is better than Nigeria in virtually all ramifications. Until you see other worlds, most people tend to think that the world they live in is the best. South African have tremendous respect around the globe while Nigeria and Nigerians are despised.
