Nairaland / General / Re: What's The Most Painful Loss You Had This Year, 2019? by Nmeri17: 6:13pm On Dec 31, 2019
Lizme21:
Lost almost all my late dad's hard earned goods and properties in our house to thieves in march. And this happened in an estate that has security oo, only because no one was in the house for almost 6mths. The thieves stole almost everything from beds, to inverter battery and wires, to cloths to generators, to our cooking pots, to ceiling fans, to tvs, blender, list endless... Still praying n hoping they get their rewards soon because the things they stole were of values. How can human beings be so heartless?? To say they cleared a whole house and till now, no one can tell how it happened.. Its well
this one na cleanup. they relocated, and you guys didn't keep up

Brother it was quite a journey, I learnt so much in both countries. Truth be told, my masters did open my eyes to new horizons coz I discovered my degree taught me nothing. During my masters I was exposed to hands on and concrete learning . In South Africa also, I discovered IT is all about hands on skills...so I upskilled. I wrote quite a handful of IT certifications such CISA, ITIL, CISSP AWS Solutions Architectect etc. so it’s a learning curve, just embark on the journey and you won’t regret it.
baba, you no be small fish o. your CV go dey bully HR sef. I pity your fellow applicants. thanks for sharing your journey. what I understand from your story is that professional experience is all that matters in the long run. be it by professional certification, IM, setting up a temporary outfit to prove capability etc. employers are ultimately interested in your portfolio

Are u a good manager of resources.

Or u are a good manager of people?
Mehn, people are way too problematic and unreliable for me. I'll take my chances with resources, but I'm still curious to hear options from both categories

In 2009 after my youth service, I decided to further my studies in the UK. After the completion of my masters I came back home. For months I was jobless and it was excruciatingly depressing and so I decided to head back to the UK. From the UK, I proceeded to South Africa for my PhD, today I can tell you proudly that I’m the IT Manager in well known bank in South Africa. My Masters opened doors for me from the onset I stepped into SA. So I’d advise you strongly to go for your masters in the US. You will reap the benefits sooner or later
oooh boy! were your living costs and tuition fees all expense paid, or ....

are you saying all that money would've yielded quicker results if you went to ZA straight? with what you know now, will you still have gone for the UK postgrad?

It depends on your field of study; if you're going into any of the STEM fields then you MAY have an edge in the jobs market; for any other course, the advantage is mostly psychological; I have 3 masters degrees already from 3 of the world's top universities and I can tell you authoritatively that it hasn't done anything to boost my job's prospect.

If you're not going for STEM my advise is that you should spend your money setting up a business for yourself in Nigeria.

Coldie:

Wow... Na so Nigeria bad reach, even with the abroad credentials no jobs.l

I know a girl who studied in the UK, both bsc and MSC and is in Nigeria, no work.

Since she got the accent she now acts as a TOEFL private tutor.

U can't imagine the kind of business that heavy millions could have yielded if she invested it in Nigeria
jeez! shocked shocked shocked

what example of business, please? PM?

Programming / Re: Common good python programming practices you should know by Nmeri17: 12:29am On Nov 28, 2019
Python sweet sha. Plenty syntactic sugar. If you're unlucky and get hooked, you may find it difficult to detach. Rough guess sha cuz I've only used it to setup an RPC server between my dominant language.

It strikes me as very feminine — object and method name concision, package names, ease of use etc.

Nice thread op

My broda, 140K for a swift or objective c developer per month is "Extreme Low Balling". Nobody will apply to your post. Do you know how much it cost to purchase a macbook? Or how much it cost to fix one?? Do you know how much it cost to buy 1 iphone or get at least 2 different iphones with different screen sizes. Cost of living aside, it costs plenty to develop IOS or mac apps.

grin
You're even going far. Have you run into Mac apps update wahala? How many unlimited bundles will be enough? Then burning one tanker of petrol while installation lingers for weeks. 140k should be thanks for applying
