Nigeria'1st private TV station is Galaxy TV, Ibadan. Even Dora Akunyili as minister for information clarified this on national TV |
Sepukku:I love your civilised engagement though I respectfully disagree. You see, Adeshina is a masculine Nigerian-Yoruba name and is clearly her surname while Chiddimma is a Feminine Nigeria-Igbo name which is her first name. This does not give any room for argument. It is very common for children born of Igbo mothers to bear Igbo first names e.g Ifeanyi Adeleke e.t.c. |
Sepukku:Your point is excellent and plausible but will you rely on assumption rather than result of an investigative panel? |
I think that by looking at her name combination, it should not be difficult to conclude that her parents are from Nigeria - both of them. Her surname suggests that her father is Yoruba while her first name suggests that her mother is Igbo. However, the bigotry on display there is highly condemnable. |
Prof . Wole Soyinka's achievements are extraordinary and he won these by dint of his purposeful deployment of his God given talent. If it were easy, we would have had hundreds of Nobel Laureates. While he is responsible for his political views and it it not our job to defend him, I cannot rebuke somebody for expressing his opinion. And incase you overestimate yourselves, his opinions are weighty! That is why all of you are talking about him. |
Like him, loathe him, Prof. Wole Soyinka remains African giant, African pride. Great men are also human but one thing intellectuals with some doses of activism in their blood are known for is bravery. If you like, try to crucify them, they say the truth "the way they see it" not the way "you see it". |
Reconstruction? Fear God!!! |
Why are some people pretending to be of God aplauding evil and misrepresenting the scriptures? No matter how Holly you pretend to be, if you harbour hatred in your heart, you will miss the kingdom of God you claim to be after. |
Nigerians are just too funny. We are blinded by religion or rather distorted interpretation of religious texts and our education is not even able to free us from ignorance and negative sentiment. |
It is true that from 1820, the title of baale was the norm. This was for many reasons. I will highlight some. 1.The military "founders" of the third and "new" Ibadan did not want to continue the Lagelu Dynasty because it was hereditary and also meant that only direct descendants of Lagelu could ascend the throne. 2. A large number of them were of Oyo stock (Oyo. Ogbomosho, Iwo, Ilorin, osogbo Saare, Oje, etc.) and other northern Yoruba sub group who easily recognised the Alaafin as head of all Yoruba empire 3. They were not really interested in civil titles. Their priority was military dominance which they achieved to a very great extent. Remember that even with their "baale system" they were busy conquering and subjugating other towns with higher kingship status. This is the real reason Ibadan was (and is?) derided by other Yorubas. However , the system that evolved was the best ever. All major yoruba clans have quarters in Ibadan and they all have equal right to aspire to the highest post in the land. This is a form of democracy |
Ibadan is a fusion of many towns and villages rolled into One. In the towns and villages that make up what is known as 'Ibadan less city', the baale or kingship systems are hereditary. The Olubadan is just like an emperor . |
Ibadan is a combination of many towns rolled into one. The several towns and villages that make up Ibadan have their hereditary royal system similar to what obtains in other yorubaland. The ruler of the city is just like an empror. Also, for clarity, 'baale system ' is clearly a royal system - there is no other traditional meaning. |
Ah! Lagelu did not rule for just one year and was not even alive in 1820! Lagelu ,a prince from Ile-Ife established Ibadan in the 15th century and he brought a BEADED CROWN with him thereby establishing a ROYAL STOOL. However, his kingdom was later displaced in a war declared by Alafin Sango after the unfortunate incident in a market where the masquerade's secret was revealed for the 1st time in Yoruba history. Lagelu took refuge in OKE IBADAN. BEFORE his death he returned to re- establish his expanded kingdom which flourished for more than 500 YEARS before the town was deserted again during the OWU wars. The location of the town was later used as a war camp by the most powerful warriors from various parts of Yoruba land fromwhere they planned successful expeditions and return to do post mortem and of course share spoils of war. The present arrangements started after the Gbanamu war when armies from Ife, Oyo,Ijebu,Egba and other friendly armies decided to make the place a permanent abode and established a "NEW" town. This was around 1820. Now all the generals were Royals in their own right and no one family or clan was subservient to the others. So for relative peace to reign, a new and ingenious system of administration was needed to be established. That was how they fashioned out a rotational system that also takes merit into account. |
press9jatv:My dear, goggle is your friend! |
This is commendable especially because the previous administration made a lot of noise on this project but achieved very little. However, we do not have to engage in unnecessary praise singing. The road was conceptualized as a 110 KM road divided into 4 phases but only 32KM (phase 1)has been awarded which is even just under construction. If it takes 8 yrs to complete 32km,it may take 40 yrs to complete the entire 110km! This shows that we lack capacity to deliver needed infrastructure in record time |
Thank God! Happy for them |
The real people that destroyed Nigeria are the coupists of January 1966 (of cause led by Nzeogwu). Before then, all the regions were developing fast with focussed and progressive leadership. Though things were not perfect, it was clear that Nigeria was poised to become the pride of the black race but alas the system was interupted and the rest is history. |

I personally see Binis and Yorubas as one and same people. The current generation likes to argue and fight over everything and the elders are not intervening to educate and guide. There was a lot of interaction and connection between Binis and Yorubas before the advent of the Europeans and this is not limited to Lagos alone. Ancient Lagos is not the entire Lagos State. The modern Lagos is an amalgam of towns with their own different histories and traditional institutions. Also, the particular part of Lagos with "Bini History" is very well known. Ask the elders. There should be no controversy |
HND is no longer relevant and should be scrapped. Polytechnics should award OND. Anyone who desires higher level of education should go to the University. However, HND topup is far from absurd. Remember many universities in Nigeria offer HND topup with full approval of their respective senate |
Wow. See how Nigerians are fighting over issues that doesn't really concern them. In case you forgot, this is not a religious fight. It is simply a case of two races fighting over pieces of land (like Ife/Modakeke and other land disputes) |
Well, they know quite well what Israel can do. They also know that the most powerful countries in the world are unconditionally with Israel. They know they cannot defeat Israel. They see that the world has forgotten them. Even their fellow Arab nations are normalysing ties with Israel and the palestian question is no longer on the table. The fear of perpetual subjugation heightened their desperation which made them to embark on this SUICIDE MISSION |
It is both interesting and sad that Nigerians don't see things other than from the prisms of ethnoreligious sentiments. Most Muslims I see support Hamas simply because they think they are Islamic. Similarly most Christians I see support Israel because they erroneously think Israel is synonymous with Christianity. This fight is a racial fight and not a religious fight! Those who know both history and world politics know that only USA can bring permanent solution to Israeli-Palestinian crises |
It is very difficult for Nigerians not to be beclouded by sentiment and bias on any matter. Anyway, it is only the US that can resolve the 80-year old Israeli-Pallestinian crises (since the UN has proved to be powerless and ineffective). |
Well, little piece of advice here Be yourself Be the first to greet your colleagues. Within a short time you'll become comfortable with everybody Be the best at your job. This will be noticed and you will earn respect Be hardworking and learn to be smart too! Be willing to help others Don't expect to be appreciated Always appreciate others Don't backbite Don't be too selfish Be aware of your surroundings Be your own motivator Don't let people's opinions or comments bother you Be independent but be a good team player I need to stop here to avoid being too boring but remember NO BODY IS BETTER THAN YOU SO BE CONFIDENT! |
Most Nigerians no matter how educated are not democrats. I think it is our nature: we are always the exact opposite of whatever we claim to be. We claim to be godly but we believe in other powers, we claim to be enlightened democrats but we prefer anarchy , we claim to be good and loving but we are very bitter, not ready to accommodate opposing views, can go any length to tarnish other people's images and with no spirit of sportsmanship. |
If a lawyer gives a sincere advice to some politicians, they think he either does not need a job/money, or he is incompetent/afraid or even that he is an agent of the opponent! That is how far removed from reality a politician can be! Also, I notice that some barely educated people tend to downplay the importance of professionals like lawyers, engineers etc.and this sometimes lead to misinformation of the populace (in the case of law misinterpretation) and building collapse (in the case of engineering standard violation),etc. |
Thank God! |
Ijaw,Edo,Igala,Berom, Igbo, Hausa,Kanuri,Urhobo,Ibiobio, Fulani,Yoruba and all the over 250 ethnic groups in Nigeria were powerful based on the standards of measuring power in the past. Now, we need to focus on working together to build a present and future that we and the next generation will be proud of. By this, we will earn respect and become really "powerful" among the comity of nations |
Before we take things too seriously, we must remember that this is but a book written by a politician. And what does a politician do when he gets a platform? He campaigns for himself and his "significant others" and campaigns against the "other party" |
Wow! Even if we want to give Murtala the opportunity of fair hearing, he's but dead. All I know is that the actors in those early periods including the writer are all responsible for Nigeria's woes. However those of them that live long are luckier because they can tell one sided, unverifiable tales and ascribe all the blames to their dead colleagues while portraying a nice image of themselves. |
