Car Talk › Man Fined For Strapping Car To A Hot Air Balloon & Flying It 98ft Over The City by obafemee80(op):

An overenthusiastic hot air balloon pilot, Alexandru Barshentsev thought it would be a good idea to combine his love of cars with his love of flying. But all this crazy stunt did was create a turbulent situation with the Russian authorities

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROBxpAlNdUg

The footage shows a lime-green Soviet-era Oka compact vehicle, strapped to a hot air balloon where the passenger basket would traditionally be, being lifted into the air with the driver inside.

Alexandru Barshentsev fitted a gas burner to the roof of the little motor and attached it underneath a large hot air balloon.

To make it light enough to take off, he removed everything he could including the seats, windows and everything under the bonnet.

Travelling in the shell of the fluorescent green Oka, Barshentsev ascended up to a height of 98 feet into the city sky.

But while some onlookers were impressed by the stunt, Russian authorities looked upon it with less of an open mind.

On Thursday, Novosibirsk transport prosecutors announced that they had found the flying vehicle’s “pilot” in administrative violation of airspace use and aircraft handling laws. He was fined 6,700 rubles (£87 or $116), according to the transport prosecutor’s office.

They are now threatening to take away the man's hot air ballooning licence, too.
Prosecutors requested that a Novosibirsk court ban the balloon owner from operating it until he acquired a medical note, a pilot’s license, and aircraft documentation.

They believed the car could have fallen down at any moment."Such a flight within the city borders threatened the life of not only the owner of the balloon, but also other aircraft."

Mr Barshentsev pointed out that the car remained attached to the ground by rope throughout its flight.Had anything gone wrong, it would have simply fallen back onto the empty field below.

He said the most dangerous part had been landing as even a conventional hot air balloon basket could cause injuries when touching back down on the ground.

Mr Barshentsev said: "For me it was mostly of interest as a piece of research."
He said he was now considering developing a balloon basket with a suspension system, like a car, to improve safety on landing.

Car Talk › Kobe Steel Scandal Deepens Over Quality Of Metal Used In Cars,Aeroplanes & Train by obafemee80(op): 6:33am On Oct 13, 2017

Car, train and aircraft makers are investigating whether they have used any sub-standard materials made by Kobe Steel.

The metals were delivered to hundreds of companies including car manufacturers, aeroplane firms and the space industry.

The checks come after Japan's third largest steelmaker admitted falsifying quality data, possibly for as long as a decade.

General Motors,Boeing and Toyota are among the firms checking their models.

An internal investigation at Kobe Steel found 70 cases of data tampering at its Kobelco Research unit.

Shares in Kobe Steel fell by nearly 40% in two days, wiping more than $1.5bn (£1.1bn) off its market value after the firm admitted fabricating data about the strength and durability of products it delivered to more than 200 companies.

The metal scandal broke after Kobe Steel, one of the key Asian metal producers, said its staff had given false strength and durability ratings.

Kobe Steel spokesman Gary Tsuchida told the BBC the firm regrets the falsification of data.

"There were tens of employees involved. It seems in some cases quality control was undertaken by veteran employees who had lots of experience, highly trusted within the organisation, and somehow these discrepancies slipped by them."
Widening crisis
In Japan and abroad, manufacturers that have used Kobe Steel materials have been racing to check that the safety of their own products has not been compromised.

Central Japan Railway said some Kobe Steel parts for its bullet trains did not meet Japanese industrial standards, but there were no safety issues.

Hitachi said its new trains in Britain used Kobe Steel but had all passed rigorous tests.

US plane manufacturer Boeing also said it had not found any safety issues. But Mazda said it was still investigating after it used Kobe aluminium in some car bonnets.

And Honda said that aluminium produced by Kobe Steel had been used in doors and bonnets of some of its cars.

The crisis at Kobe Steel is the latest in a string of recent scandals at major Japanese companies.

They include cases of falsified data at Nissan Motor and Mitsubishi Motors, while air bag maker Takata filed for bankruptcy in June over faulty airbags which were blamed for several deaths and many injuries.

Toshiba is still working to recover from an accounting scandal that began in 2015.

Travel › Venezuelans Expired Passport Will Remain Valid For 2Y Due To Paper/ink Shortages by obafemee80(op): 12:15pm On Oct 12, 2017

Venezuelans have been told expired passports are valid for another two years because they have run out of paper and ink to print new ones.
President Maduro has signed an emergency decree to extend their validity because of chronic shortages at the national passport agency.
At least a million Venezuelans have been waiting months for new documents and cannot travel in the interim.

The passport agency said in March that a lack of ‘materials’ was to blame.
Demand for travel documents is at a record high as Venezuelans seek to escape from political crisis and deep recession.

Since global oil prices plunged in 2015, Venezuela hasn’t had the funds to import basic goods such as food and medicine, creating acute shortages and stirring anger toward Maduro.
It makes 95 per cent of its foreign income from oil exports. Inflation is at about 700 per cent.

Adding to the overall misery are a drastic rise in violent crime – especially in the capital city of Caracas – rolling blackouts and widespread and often times bloody protests against the government.
There have been casualties and deaths on both sides of the protests and accusations from the international community of human rights abuses and political oppression.

Sceptics have previously said they think delays replacing passports is because the Maduro government is trying to keep people from leaving the beleaguered nation.

Car Talk › Re: Hi-Tech Smart Crossing Lights Up Safest Walkway & Warn Drivers Of Risks Ahead by obafemee80(op):
How it works

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5Cc7amddGs

Step 1: The Smart Crossing identifies which part of the road would be the safest place for a crossing after scanning the risk in the area. Walk up to the spot on the pavement that suggests where the crossing will be and it assesses the risk based on the traffic flow

Step 2: Once the progress bar turns green, so does the spot you are stood on. A zebra crossing then shines through the road directing you to head across. There are also new markings on the road from cars and vans telling them where they need to stop and a blue section for any approaching cyclists to stop in ahead of the other vehicles

It is believed the good old fashioned zebra crossing turns out they and other pedestrian crossing, aren't doing enough to save lives.

The Smart Crossing, developed by insurance company Direct Line, can see what is happening around it using computer vision and update the road markings without manual control. ad

It said many of the features were brainstormed using Transport Research Laboratory data identifying a number of reasons why crossings are a potential danger zone.

It found that a pedestrian's position and route as they cross the road, the influence of other pedestrians who are dangerously walking from one side of the street to the other and overcrowded crossings are all factors that can make them hazardous.

To reduce the risk, it came up with the idea of responsive roads that could cope with the growing number of users. To put the theory and technology into practice, the insurer worked with University College London and urban design specialists Umbrellium to create this section of highway that can light-up like the advertising screens.

The working prototype is a 22-metre long section made up of a patchwork of LED panels.Using cameras positioned at each end of the street, the technological brain of the system monitors what's happening on the stretch of highway and triggers the panels to lights up to offer a safe place for pedestrians to cross and also alert other road users that there are people in the road up ahead.

The intelligent computer can even map and pre-empt pedestrians' movement to respond to alerts it flashes up through the road surface.
Because it is fully adaptable, it means it can measure how many people are stood at the side of the road waiting to cross and adjust the width of the zebra crossing it creates through the panels.

This could be extremely useful outside schools and live sport and music events where large crowds are attempting to cross busy routes.
The cameras can also detect when unusual risks occur, such as a child chasing a football into oncoming traffic.

A bright red arrow identifies the route the child would take and at the same time alerts incoming drivers, motorcyclists and cyclists to stop further up the road with illuminated signals flashed through the surface.

It can also provide warning signals to pedestrians, notifying them when they're being hidden from another road user's view by a high sided vehicle, like a bus or lorry.

The pavements also glow to grab the attention of daydreaming pedestrians engrossed in their mobile phones or listening to music to prevent them from strolling into the road without looking.

This prototype is also waterproof, can hold the weight of vehicles and can recognise the difference between pedestrians, vehicles and cyclists.it's ready to change the future of how we cross the road.

Travel › Gridlock: LASG Plans Multilayer Car Parks by obafemee80(op): 4:56am On Oct 12, 2017

The Lagos State Government says it plans to construct multilayer car parks in strategic locations across the state as part of the traffic management and transport sector reforms.

The Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Ade Akinsanya, in a statement on Wednesday said the multilayer car parks would be constructed within 12 months.
The commissioner, who stated that the government was open to partnership with interested investors, said the move to construct the multilayer car parks was a prelude to the enactment of revised Parking Authority Law.

He added that the initiative would rid the state of indiscriminate parking by roadsides, which had been contributing to gridlock.

He said, “The Lagos State Government is desirous of having multilayer car parks across the state in the next 12 months. This is in consonance with the government’s proposed traffic management and transport sector reforms and as a prelude to the enactment of the State’s revised Parking Authority Law.

“Interested investors with either private land or proposed government land suitable for the construction of multilayer car parks and auxiliary structures are requested to submit proposals for the approval for construction of the parks in any of the Ikoyi, Ikeja, Victoria Island, Badore, Ajah, Lekki Phase 1, Ipaja, Yaba,Ikorodu, Mushin, Surulere, Festac Town and Lagos Island areas.”

Car Talk › Re: This New Writeoff Categories Will Stop You From Buying Dangerous,Death Trap Cars by obafemee80(op):
Buying a Category N car can look tempting. Such cars often have attention-grabbing low prices, but it's important to research the history of any car you're thinking of buying.
When shopping for a used car,the best protection is to have an independent mechanic look over the vehicle before buying. A mechanic will have the experience and tools to best assess a car's true condition.
A good mechanic knows what to check and could find accident damage that you’ve not spotted. Doing this could save you from buying a potentially unsafe car.
Typically,a mechanic will charge a modest fee for the service, but the protection is well worth the investment.

Up till September 30th last month,these levels were A, B, C and D.But to simplify things,from 1st of October 2017 this month,they are renamed A, B, S and N.

Under the old system,Cat A cars are the worst. They’re so badly damaged they can’t even be used for salvage purposes and should be crushed.

Cat B vehicles have also sustained serious damage, but it’s OK for them to be broken down into spares.

A Cat C vehicles is fixable, but the cost of repairs will exceed the value of the car, so the insurance company will have ‘written it off’.

A Cat D write-off is also fixable, and at a repair cost lower than the car’s market value, but the insurance company's decision to repair a vehicle like this will take into account other factors, such as the cost of a courtesy car while it’s being mended and the cost of inspection fees to validate the completed repairs.

In that case the insurers might decide to ‘write off’ a very lightly damaged car, selling it to an independent dealer who will then do the same repairs that the insurance company would have organized if it hadn’t been written off. That dealers will then sell it on to the public.

But from October 2017,the former A,B,C and D categories for crash-damaged cars has now been replaced by new A, B, S and N categories.

The biggest difference between the outgoing A, B, C, D system and the new A, B, S and N one is that the updated system concentrates more on the condition of the car rather than on the cost of repair.

Here's how the new system will work

Category A or Scrap cars remain the most badly damaged vehicles. They can’t be repaired or even broken for spares.

Category B or Break cars are again very badly damaged and beyond repair, but they can be ‘broken’ into parts for salvage and recycling.

Category S or Structural cars have incurred damage to the basic structure that gives a car its strength. These ‘S’ cars can be fixed and re-sold, but you should ensure that the work has been checked by a qualified mechanic.

Category N or Non-structural cars are equivalent to old Cat D cars. Their damage isn’t to the core structure, but there might still be some safety-related parts in areas like suspension or steering that will need to be replaced.

Education › Unsent Text Message Accepted As Dead Man's Will By Australian Court by obafemee80(op):

A court in Australia has accepted an unsent, draft text message on a dead man's mobile phone as an official will.
The 55-year-old man had composed a text message addressed to his brother, in which he gave "all that I have" to his brother and nephew.
The message was found in the drafts folder on the man's phone after he took his own life last year .
Brisbane Supreme Court ruled that the wording of the text indicated that the man intended it to act as his will.
In the message, the man gave details of how to access his bank account and where he had hidden money in his house.

"Put my ashes in the back garden," he wrote. "A bit of cash behind TV and a bit in the bank."
According to ABC News, the man's wife applied to manage his assets and argued that the text message was not valid as a will because it was never sent.

Typically, for a will to be valid in Queensland, it must be written and signed by two witnesses.
Justice Susan Brown said the wording of the text message, which ended with the words "my will", showed that the man intended it to act as his will.

"The reference to his house and superannuation and his specification that the applicant was to take her own things indicates he was aware of the nature and extent of his estate, which was relatively small," she said.
She said the "informal nature" of the message did not stop it representing the man's intentions, especially as it was "created on or about the time that the deceased was contemplating death, such that he even indicated where he wanted his ashes to be placed".

Validity of wills
In 2006, the law in Queensland was changed to allow less formal types of documents to be considered as a will.
Another unusual will accepted in Queensland includes a DVD marked with "my will", in 2013.
The UK's Law Commission is currently fielding a public consultation on the legal rules applying to wills.
The proposals listed by the body includes giving courts the capacity to "dispense with the formalities for a will where it's clear what the deceased wanted".

Car Talk › Watch The New Nissan e-NV200 Pull A House,Sets An Electric Van Towing Record by obafemee80(op): 6:20am On Oct 09, 2017

It seems this period is a good time to be breaking records with heads falling left and right. Towing appears to be particularly en-vogue as both Land Rover and Jaguar proved (though they are essentially the same company)

While Jaguar XF Sportbrake pull a former British Olympic skier at 117 miles per hour, Land Rover discovery went all the way down-south to Australia to tow one of their massive road trains through the equally vast outback.

This week,Nissan launched the new e-NV200 all-electric van using the same new 40 kWh battery pack introduced in the next generation Leaf.

To showcase the new vehicle,Nissan had it attempt to break the “electric van towing record” by moving a house.Of course,it was only a stunt since the e-NV200’s actual towing capacity is 430 kg (950 pounds).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xF3ga6yEzoo?t=8

Actress Margot Robbie,Nissan’s new ambassador for electric vehicles and Intelligent Mobility, made a video about the stunt and the new Leaf/e-NV200:

As for the new electric van itself,Nissan says that the new 40 kWh battery enables a 60% increase in range for up to 280 km (174 miles) on a single charge.

The e-NV200 is equipped with a 80 kW (109 hp) electric motor and it is available with DC fast-charging capacity (50 kW) depending on the trim.

A Russian mechanics expert has restored a Soviet-era military vehicle that moves without the use of wheels or tracks, but is entirely screw-propelled.

Originally used by the Russian military in the 1970s,the vehicle uses giant metal screws which move it forward by twisting across the ground.

The unique truck can move across most difficult terrains, including water, swampland and snow.

Fitted with a 159bhp engine,it is capable of carrying diggers, cranes and rescue equipment to areas that were previously inaccessible by land.

The Deputy Head of the Construction at Novgorod State Technical University said it will be actively used,at first,by the army,at second, by geologists,by oil and gas producers.

"We got used to solid surfaces, but regions of Siberia and the Far North mostly have creeping soil. This car is vital for oil and gas producers.”

Screw-propelled machines were first used by the military during the Second World War, after a German soldier came up with a design for a snow machine using the mechanism.

The USA used similar vehicles to transport supplies across swamp lands during the Vietnam War, but they have remained largely disused since the mid-1970s.

His words came as the world's largest car makers rushed to advertise to millions of new, potentially very wealthy, female customers in Saudi Arabia.

King Salman made the surprise announcement this week that from June next year Saudi women will be allowed to hold driving licences for the first time.

Volkswagen, Ford, Nissan and Chevrolet were among the first firms to react, putting out adverts specifically targeting women in the Muslim kingdom.

The Volkswagen advert features a pair of henna-tattooed knuckles pictured as if they are gripping a steering wheel along with the caption 'my turn'.

The crown prince gave no data to back up his assertion.Records show that increasing the number of cars on the road whatever the driver's gender would inevitably leads to more accidents.

There are around 10million women, including foreigners,in the country, likely meaning millions more cars on the road next year.

Sensing a huge market of potentially wealthy customers opening up, car brands were quick to move in.

According to the Bloomberg news agency, the biggest sellers of cars in the country are Toyota and Hyundai, whose SUVs (sports utility vehicles) are especially popular.

Ford Middle East has offered a free mustang to a Saudi woman who fought for women’s rights to drive in the kingdom.

Sahar Nassif, 63, was an outspoken critic of Saudi Arabia’s driving laws, before the ban on women drivers was lifted last week.

In October 2013, Nassif was arrested by Saudi police in Jeddah for posting a video on Youtube of herself buckling up and driving around the city.

Following the news of the royal decree issued by Saudi King Salman last week, Nassif told the BBC:

‘I’m really thrilled, everybody’s so thrilled – I’m so excited I don’t know what to do.  ‘I’m going to buy a Mustang!’

In a tweet to Nassif on Friday, Ford Middle East said:

"We'd like to give you your dream car," Ford Middle East tweeted to Nassif on Friday, followed hours later by "Your Mustang awaits" with the picture of a yellow car speeding through a tunnel and the hashtag #MustangSahar.

German car-maker Volkwagen in the Middle East joined the chorus of auto sellers applauding the Saudi driving decree, tweeting on Friday:

Car-makers have rushed in to target Saudi women after the decision is expected to boost regional car sales by 28 per cent in the first seven months of 2017,   analysts at UK business intelligence firm IHS Markit said.

Nissan were also made a bid on twitter to cash in on potential buyers from the wealthy Gulf state, posting their congratulations to Saudi women, along with luxury auto companies Cadillac and Chevrolet.

Car Talk › Jaguar Land Rover Unveils Its 1st Plug-In Hybrid Car,The Range Rover Sport P400e by obafemee80(op):

Land Rover has revealed its first green plug-in electric hybrid car,the Range Rover Sport P400e ,which will hit the road next year with a claimed 101mpg.

It will hit 60mph in 6.3 seconds, have a top speed of 137mph. And with a range on battery power-only of 31 miles, while it won't be a Tesla-matching pure electric option the British-built rechargeable Range Rover Sport is low on C02 emissions averaging just 64g/km.

Badged P400e, the new model combines a 300hp 2.0-litre four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine with an 85kW electric motor to create 404hp of pulling power for the 4X4.

It accelerates from 0-60mph in only 6.3 seconds (0-62mph in 6.7 seconds) and has a top speed of 137mph.

With its electrified powertrain, the Range Rover Sport P400e emits only 64g/km and offers an all-electric range of 31 miles (51km) without the petrol engine running.

The electric motor is powered by a high-voltage lithium-ion battery.
When rapid charging, a full charge can be achieved in 2 hours 45 minutes at home using a dedicated or 32-amp wall box.

The battery can be fully charged in 7 hours 30 minutes using the 10-amp home charging cable supplied as standard.
Access to the 7Kw on-board charger is hidden behind the Land Rover badge on the right of the grille.

A Land Rover smartphone app will let you check the charge state of your car as well as tell you if a charging cable is connected and the range available with the battery power stored.

With the new plug-in Range Rover Sport, drivers can select from two driving modes to best suit their needs.
The default setting is called ‘parallel Hybrid mode’ and combines petrol and electric drive.

The system uses the sat-nav data to work out when best to switch between the electric motor and the petrol engine to maximise fuel economy over gradients along the route.

EV mode enables the vehicle to run solely on the electric motor using the energy stored in the battery for a zero emissions journey.

That greener dose of 4x4 luxury won't come cheap though. Prices for the plug-in model start from £70,800 to £84,400.

The Land Rover boss said first time, Land Rover customers can experience zero-emission, near silent off-road luxury with uncompromised all-terrain capability,
