Hello, This is one of the best threads I have ever witnessed on nairaland!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERY ONE!!! Our stockmarket has been doing well and I am very glad to be taking part in it. Now though, I have a few questions: 1. For Vetiva, is the minimum required to open an account still 1 million or has it increased? I understand this can be cash or shares - does this include units of Nigerian Mutual Funds (like ARM Discovery Fund or Aggressive Growth Fund) and foreign shares? 2. I have had a closer look at UBA Stockbrokers and nearly went for them but for the process of placing orders (buy and sell) - still not very straight foward. Like someone rightly pointed out, what if I send in an order but the Relationship Manager is sick or has gone on holiday or is temporarily unavailable - what would then happen to the order - executed with slippage? I have mailed the people NBA provided their details and I should see what they say and what their processes are. I think they should take phone orders (recorded by both parties )3. I heard from a post in www.stockmarketnigeria.com that GTB now has a stock brokerage division but I have done some research but could not find any detail on this. I think the person is confusing with http://www.gticapitalltd.com/ or something - anyone know more about this? Also has anyone tried Eurocomm or Afriinvest? They have an offices in London and this may perhaps make it easier for UK clients I suppose? |
@Ezinwannem and barbosa1 you have said it all really. The xenophobia in the air is getting too much in this place! I have vowed to leave UK for any other country within the next 24 months. The place is the country with the most rude and robotic people in the world (but nice economy though). |
How long does it take after the execution of transactions before it appears in an investors cscs accout? 24hrs, 48hrs ![]() Thanks. |
What exactly is done on the Abuja Commodities Exchange? The answer is "exchanging of commodities" lol. but does this mean commodity contracts aka futures? I know there are many Nigerian traders who trade US futures - has anyone tried Nigerian or African (continental futures)? Which commodities, how to find good broker etc. Thanks. |
well, no bad experiences per say, my decision is based on my best bet extrapolation of current trends to the future. the current happenings in the UK will most likely lead to chaos and social breakdown in the near future - especially as UK has surrendered all power (or should I say 90% power) to Brussels and the signing of the Treaty of Lisbon is an event of significant importance. |
Hi guys, I have in recent days come to detest UK and now really want out (after spending 4 years here). I have come to see UK as a short term money making place (GBP) and not a place for bring up my kids. So calling ALL Nigerians around the world. How does the UK compare with Australia and Canada? |
@ SweetT I agree with you for USA but not for UK. Darfur is right about the UK. UK is a highly segregated State (except you are in london) or in other places with a high number of nigerians. though this may also exist in the US, I am certain that it is not of the same magnitude. Media tabloids constantly feed people with negative views about immigrants plus comibined with the fact that you are black and nigerian and young - be careful! all that glitters is not gold. |
Hi all, I am a recent Electronics and Computer Engineering Graduate - currently working as an Information Engineer. Ultimate aim is to venture into Embedded Software Development for telecoms. But with that said, im more of a generalist and im currently working with databases, desktop applications development and business process improvement. |
developing country sounds better - 3rd world makes it seem they have done something OF THEMSELVES REALLY to make themselves developed. |
Is the use of 'Third World' to refer to African countries (including Nigeria) and other developing countries rude? |
Hi guys, I would like views on the following matters: 1. I anticipate more growth from RT Briscoe - I enjoyed the big ride from NGN5 at IPO to the current NGN25-NGN29. Does anyone think this kind of growth will continue and what is the major driver of this growth. it certainly not the traditional toyota business since its a high ticket item. 2. Equity Life Insurance will be making an IPO next year 2008 - I think at 80kobo per share. The company results have been impressive for the last year but I am a bit worried with the ownership structure - • Skye Bank Plc - 30% • International Energy Insurance Co. Ltd - 30% • Equity Indemnity Insurance Company Limited - 11% • Cashcraft Asset Management Limited - 10% • Law Union and Rocks. - 10% • Others. - 9% 3. Union Bank will also be coming to the market next year and I personally think that for a few negligible issues, Union Bank will be a goldmine. What do people think about these ![]() |
i am asking this because they alot of funds is being spent on non-issues - stadiums, making abuja look like london (sounds like the effect of inferiority complex to me hehe(kidding)) and doing many other irrelevant stuff when the main focus should be on Nigerians and especially poor Nigerians. |
has the nigerian government never thought of creating a welfare state since independence- Nigerian Health Service (NHS), Poverty Allowances etc - and let sub optimal functioning be another issue. An investor who put 100,000 in discovery fund in 2005 would have reaped 200,000 by 2007 (being low risk). why cant the government put 10billion and after two years, it becomes 20billion. and divide that sum per defined amount of population head below the povery line to better the masses. or use their own bonds or similar instruments. when Governors are driving with their convoys, dont they see the poor begging and at least give out some little funds. Does the Nigerian Government have common sense? Do you think a Nigerian Welfare State will be actualized in the near future. |
I second TonyJon! He has come up with something great! Its sound investment strategy. |
can anyone please enlighten me on the meaning of PO (just to clarify) - does it mean 'Private Offer' or 'Public Offer' and what are the fundamental differences with 'Private Placement'. @ Babs_O I have had my eye on the insurance firms for a while now - my problem is that they are just tooo many; now their recapitalization has ended - there is good opportunity for growth as you rightly pointed out. Based on sector uniqueness (i.e. with things peculiar to the insurance sector apart from PE and common ratios) - could anyone please enlighten me on fundamentals of the insurance sector (short summary). Finally, what does anyone think of rt briscoe - the share price has been appreciating and i wonder if this momentum will be sustained; my concerns however are that their traditional business is a high ticket item and the sector returns has been historically average or below as far as i know. |
RT BRISCOE has earned above average returns in recent years and i am tempted to invest. however, the automobile & tyre sector has been known to be an under performer (i.e. compared to other sectors) worldwide. Also toyota cars (the traditional business) is a high ticket item. Based on chairman statements and balance sheet - things look good - anyone here think share price could reach NGN45 by 2011? constructive comments only(i.e. no insults etc). |
stocks that will make you rich in 2008 - the starter of the popular thread please let me know when the thread will be starting so i can watch out - or perhaps you could start it soon so investors could start preparing their capital(i speak for myself). thanks. |

Using this as a long term investment vehicle to churn up funds for another investment - what are nairalanders opinion on the 7-10 yr performance of this Discovery Fund. My money doubled from 2005-2007 (not bad for a mutual fund); based on this, I am thinking of investing more funds but just wanted to get opinions. Any insights most welcome especially as to performance indices of mutual funds in helping me decide. Thank you. |
Poster of this message, if you are serious, send me an email to chibiks@googlemail.com so that I will know that you are serious. You can also give me your number if you wish. I will pray with you to Jehova for 6 months. |
Hello Skook, It is written in the Word of God, "Which of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life" - the Bible says this. Now, you may be +ve and live till 80 years - a negative person may die in an accident. Moreover, understand that nobody in life really cares about u except Jesus! You may now be saying, if He cares then why did He allow me to be positive. But, just understand that only Jesus Christ can help you; the same miracles wrought be God through the apostles are for today! I dont know what your belief is but I will begin praying for you from today for the next 6 months to God expecting an answer from Him - I cant promise you that He will heal you but if He gives me an answer, I will relay it to you. Also you can visit www.harvestwarriors.com I had my test recently - nobody cares but Jesus. I didnt worry about it - I just put Him in control. Remain blessed. |
