Christianity EtcRe: Why Do Christians Lie That God Doesnt Condone Killing And Accept Human Sacrifice by Obalende: 1:24pm On Dec 11, 2008
@sahel lady
thanks for that

@ Adam
I understand where you are coming from.

The Bible will not make sense to you except that passage or verse is revealed (and this is the key word here). Revelation is a function of the spirit of man and not of the brain. Get mehuh

The author (Christ Jesus) described it as the "Word" and "life" not as theories and stories meant to be consumed in the flesh. Paul the apostle says "we did not come to you in excellency of speech" (in other words not by eloquence) "but by the demonstration of the Spirit and power" (in other words what we are telling you is more than mere words).

Greek translations, theories, theology, critical thinking and argument will not help. Only revelation can  help you.

Adam, please stop trying to send God on guilt trips, He knows the end from the beginning.

@poster
The full Bible is the full and undiluted Word of God - including murders and blood shedding in the Old Testament.

Truth is revealed to those whom God wills. God is kind and merciful! That the Son of God was born to a carpenter as a father in a manger & was led by the Holy Spirit to be tempted of the devil and ultimately died on a Cross defies the understanding of the carnal mind. the carnal thinks "this is cray & makes no sense". This is indeed not suprising. Only God can cause anybody to believe & be saved (1 Cor 1:30); exactly the same way, you look at the OT and say "wow God is wicked"; this is but ur carnal mind & brain in action - you really need to ask yourself "what do i know beyond the physical plane?"; "am i really wise enough to interprete the actions of Jehova?"

thanks for this explaination too - I was also wondering due to the very high PAT they keep declaring - it must be primarily from loans then?

I wont personally bank with them in this day and age. just compare unionbankng.com and gtbplc.com and see the difference. grin

anything they say must be backed up.

its not enough for them to just say it verbally.

You must seek a press release or other official statement from the bank stating what EXACTLY affected the equity fund holders. if not, please seek further action by writing to senior staff (maybe the guy just wanted to have a field day with ur money).

PoliticsRe: Nigeria Seeks N59 billion Loan To Build New Satellites by Obalende: 4:12pm On Dec 04, 2008
this is slightly offpoint but I'm going to say it. guys, I am learning a lot of vocab from this forum - as guys de blow english like this. "partisan politics", "puerile and insipid". that got me lost for a second - but i am learning - thanks!!!!

the nigerian situation is a case of trying to cure skin cancer by using expensive body creams to cover up the real condition instead of going for chemotherapy. cancerous cells must be removed(die) and not covered up by nice cream and million dollar clothes.

This is one of many senseless projects that attempts to just cover up the cancer in the society - there are many things that can be prioritised over this - do we really need an independent satellite for this? can't we collaborate with China or the US and pay them a small fee and they send data to our on weather/climate station. I am a realist and I know it would be great for us to have our own stations,etc - but the country has other "cancers" in the society that must be dealt with before .

How about not borrowing money & spending from national funds on our "cancers" which include:
* Poverty alleviation
* Education (with proper research funding - in fact, it would have made sense if all this money went into research funding into some key issues affecting nigeria - governments around the world know the importance of research funding).
* Job creation and massive infrastructure development (2 year project max - once its a "10 year plan" it smost likely a fraud).

No, the govt wont deal with the real issues - they circumvent them. no emergency response unit that really works and helps victims of ghastly accidents that happen daily across d nations highways.

the story is the same - from useless stadiums in abuja (not that there is anything instrinsically wrong with these things) costing billions that a lot of people can't afford to watch matches in, to miami style airports proposed for lagos that most of the population can't fly from; to the mega city beautification project in lagos that does nothing to create jobs (i prefer many have jobs but city doesnt look nice to;city looks nice but many r jobless).

It beggars belief that from independence till date we have had one useless govt to another - who instead of curing the cancer in our society (how about educating nigerians that killing people en masse is NOT civilised and that dispute can be settled in courts as has been seen in Jos?) - love to embark on stupid projects*.

Solution: Nigeria needs uniform, sustained and organic growth that affects every citizen in a tangible way.

*As many nairalanders like to take things personal I have to put a disclaimer. I have not said violence only happens in nigeria and killings only happen in nigeria, i have not said you are not educated, these and other statements are not intended to be taken personally.

TravelRe: Ugly Britain by Obalende: 11:01pm On Nov 29, 2008
There is something in psychology called compensation where somebody tries to compensate for a "defect" by being extremely good in another area of life or being aggressive against a person who highlights any "defect" that may be relevant to the subject so as to convince him/herself that what has bn hinted at is not really true.(this will be an imperfect analogy but you get what I mean). I AM NOT INSULTING ANYBODY - I AM JUST USING THIS TERM TO EXPLAIN WHY PEOPLE INSULT OTHERS WHEN TRUTH IS HINTED AT. PLEASE NOBODY SHOULD TAKE THIS PERSONAL.

I see no wrong in the assertion of AngieFan that:

"Nigerians this is your country. This is the reality of tens of millions Nigerians in Nigeria today. Deal with it and then we can discuss why you think Britain is Ugly.

Bloody cheek! "

The truth and reality is that tens of millions of Nigerians do indeed live below UN poverty line - many below a dollar a day.

But people don't want to hear this truth. So the "defect" in this case failing to face the reality that there is abject poverty in the country for majority of the citizens. So what is the compensation here - raining insults on someone who has touched on reality, highlighting brixton, peckham, etc as British equivalents so as to compensate for the fact that Nigeria is not as bad as it really IS.

We accept the fact that there have been significant improvements in the country etc and poverty being tackled with REAL improvements; but we should also get to terms with reality. What angiefan has said is self-evident except if you want to reject the truth. Land at Murtala Mohammed airport or someother airport and then board a taxi to a far part of lagos and observe the difference between yourslef, those who boarded the aircraft with you and those hawking on the roads and other social ills; then fly to Kano and also observe; and to a few other states, then fly to a remote village in the South - and tell me if it is not fair to assume that such a number, backed by official statistics(bearing in mind possible errors) could be truehuh

@lucabrisc
You have hinted that the British derive joy in showing bad sides of other countries - this is true - also true is the fact that most of what they say is TRUE. I accept the fact that sometimes, it may seem as if they are making fun of the country and they should rather mind their own business - but that is another issue.

We accept the there is an Ugly side to Britain - but it is fair to state that Nigeria is worse in terms of economic development and living standards (but perhaps this should be discussed in another thread). Nigeria however beats UK in that its not yet very socially conditioned, politically correct and other socio-economically good points. Its not a matter of trying to run either country down - let us be objective.

What I am about to say is not directed at your person but at this common mentality.

Why do you feel you must met out the worst treatment to a civilian to feel that you have done justice to someone who assumes,insults,disrespects any of you.

Why cant you feel that an arrest and forcefullt taking d person to a police station is justice.

must you brutalize the person.

Theres indeed something wrong somewhere.
PoliticsRe: Naval Officers Beat Up A Lady And Stripped Her - Watch Video by Obalende: 3:05pm On Nov 12, 2008
let me add another angle to this okere case + the recent one in port harcourt.

Such unwarranted action can also be attributed to those uniformed men being generally unhapy with their lives and vending the anger/frustration on someone else; IMHO there is no other sound explaination for such brutal punishment of innocent citizens - the port harcourt incident, the guy was beaten into a coma (but i don't want to divert this thread so thats another issue).

Maybe the government should try giving uniformed men higher compensation so they are happier with their jobs + background mental health tests before emplyment (no offence intended).
PoliticsRe: Naval Officers Beat Up A Lady And Stripped Her - Watch Video by Obalende: 3:17pm On Nov 09, 2008
@ Enigma
I love your question:

2. Have you heard of Rosa Parks? If so, should she have done what she did or should she have followed your approach?

If she didnt do what she did (refusing to stand up on her seat in the black seating row on the bus), there would have been no bus boycott the following Monday and no Supreme Court ruling against the black/white seating system in Alabama (approximately 1 year later) which in turn will mean that there will continue to be segregated seating in the US today (at least in the Deep South).

By direct extension, if Okere did not do what she did, there would have been no NGN100m suit and no current investigations and pressure groups which will mean that uniformed men will continue to vend their savage ways on innocent citizens.

It is therefore fair to conclude that she did the right thing by not tolerating people hitting her car to move out of the road (as alleged) or horsewhipping.
PoliticsRe: Naval Officers Beat Up A Lady And Stripped Her - Watch Video by Obalende: 10:44pm On Nov 07, 2008
@ Koolkid
officers arrest and not beat up.

arrest is civilised, beat up with a horsewhip is uncivilised, barbaric and savage.

Whatever boundary is crossed warrants arrest by force NOT stripping of her top  and flogging (jungle justice in my opinion).

and what boundary are we talking about that might have been crossed? I believe it is proper to assert ones right (she came out and held the horsewhip or whatever it was) - do you expect her to just watch her car hit, and her herself assaulted and she should not do anything lest she cross the boundary of barbaric idiots?

Your post makes sense.

But if private funds of Companies are used to develop the country then who is the oil money going to.

I believe the government is accountable for the revenue of the country; I agree that government should not be relied upon too much.

But if people open up Lagos Development Plc and float equity, thats fine - but we still need to put in govt revenues and dats where d govt must be held (and they have a bad history at funds management)!
TravelRe: Living In Lagos, Is It Worth It? by Obalende: 7:15pm On Oct 17, 2008
@Seun
You have summed it up.
Just to add, when many people say they want to live in lagos, they are subconsciously refering to these areas!
TravelRe: Decongesting Lagos: Any Suggestions? by Obalende: 6:51pm On Oct 17, 2008
other posters have summed it up.

The first problem is chronic government misplacement of priorities and unequal development agenda. National development must affect every citizen.

Let me explain.

1. Government spends billions on stadiums and miami style airport terminals that many cannot afford to watch matches in or fly from. Development must be sustained and universal.

So the govt should start by stopping all luxurious expenditure and focus on infrastructure development and job creation. If these things exist in suburbs/rural towns, people wont flock to lagos.

2. It doesnt take that long to build rail tracks. Nor is nigeria not rich enough to build these. what was the money realised from the recent crude price hike used for? Govt must be accountable. it beggars belief that till date there has not been one single leadership (and i mean president + senate house) that truly has the interest of the street beggar at heart. How do these men feel when they are driving in their jeeps and driving past beggars and ghastly motor accidents. If a govt is not performing they must be ousted. So point 2 is rail lines must be built and water ways in VI for instance must be used.

3. Modern amenities must be brought to rural areas asap. When Abacha et al funds are recovered from swiss accs, these should be either used to develop villages or given to them in free handouts. Why free? Because the money was realised from crude (which accounts for over 90% of revenue) and hence belongs to them too.

This way, poeple wount need to come to lag.
TravelRe: Nigerian Graduates In The Diaspora Should Stay Put. by Obalende: 10:23am On Oct 17, 2008
I say this because employers are now showing strong preference for overseas graduates and don't believe in Nigerian graduates anymore. Sad Cry
This is impacting negatively on us  'because many graduates are now underemployed or with no hope of getting any job at all. Banks, oil companies and even some government agencies are guilty of this and it's not fair.

It is the responsibility of the government to make the ed institutions fit for purpose and also to work with local & foreign Companies and bodies to create jobs.

IT IS NOT BECAUSE OF FOREIGN GRADUATES THAT LOCAL GRADUATES CANNOT GET A JOB. for most positions the foreign grad and local will seat same tests - who ever passes passes.

If you are honest, you will recognise that there had been no jobs in nigeria prior to this anyway.

On another level, this could be blamed on inferiority complex on the part of many employers who believe anything foreign is good.

Furthermore, high performers in nigerian schools are highly sought and in many cases prefered over forign grads.

@Chrisbenogor

the answer to the `concerns' you have raised about the old testament is very deep.

But as they say, if you cannot convey something in a sentence, then its most probably a lie. so short answer is given below:

Answer: The Hebrew God of the Bible apologises to nobody concerning the writings in the OT including the murders by Moses. Sounds harsh but true. This is because He who made can use what He has made for anything. Also, God's moral standard is always the highest!

Since you appear quite moral, will you take a bullet for ur friend? d answer is NO.

So you can see that ur supposed morality has fallen flat to the ground else you will have taken d bullet.

Therefore let us accept that God knows what He is doing and has done.

i was suprised no body was able to answer the prophet and the kids (2 kings) question posed in a seperate thread.

Here is the answer from God Himself:

But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? "Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, 'Why did you make me like this?' "Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use? (Romans 9:20-21)

Secondly let the people who twist and make fun of the old testament realise that you are just one of the various creation God has made. Angels dont question God, who are you oh man! grin

You can see that God reserves the right to add you to those kids!
