I bet that the properties thrown out of that house were all the man possess. Did he train those kids up to University level? Definitely not, he couldn't have been able to do it.
Similar thing happened in my neighbourhood when I was a kid, in this case the man was threatening to send his old wife out of "his" house, but it turned out he was the one thrown out of the house with his only possessions, his bag and mattress.

Some men are so useless.
This submission, unfortunately will end up in a shredder very quickly, if it is not already there. When will my Igbo people and leaders learn how to play the political game properly instead of showboating in a manner which will achieve nothing?

Instead of the glory seeking announcement of this submission, these old coots should have been working quietly with the chairman of the National Assembly Joint Committee on the Review of the Constitution, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who is in the best position to have their interests reflected in the new constitution. SMH
How could one work with such a committee without making their opinion/stand known? How is it showboating when you make a submission on an issue and that submission was made public? More explanation is needed from you.

@ musiwa, 6 regions, to me, is the minimum acceptable outcome in this country. I want to secede too but I won't complain much nor seek for secession if I we go back to regions. Mind you, there will always be boundary adjustment and the Yoruba in Kwara could rejoin their kiths and kins in the SW if they chose to.

You can also take up arms and secede, good luck.

PoliticsRe: Nigeria's GDP By Sector - Oil Isn't The Major Source Of Our Income by Obiagu1(m): 2:28am On Jul 06, 2012
kalokalo: @ OP

Without petrodollars, how would we finance imports considering that we are an import dependent economy? How would we buy our rice, wheat, fish, sugar, edible oils, electronics, fertilizer, cars, clothes, diesel, pms to mention very few? Without the oil dollars, there would be agonizing inflation as prices of essentials would skyrocket out of the reach of the masses and painful austerity measures would follow. Oil is the lifeblood of Nigeria.
No, oil is Nigeria's vampire!
PoliticsRe: Nigeria's GDP By Sector - Oil Isn't The Major Source Of Our Income by Obiagu1(m): 2:22am On Jul 06, 2012
Thanks mannylife for the link.

@all4naija, a quick look at "your" CIA fact book.

GDP: $414.5 billion (How much do we make from oil sef?)

GDP - composition by sector:
agriculture: 35.4%
industry: 33.6%
services: 31%

So bros stop arguing!
PoliticsRe: Nigeria's GDP By Sector - Oil Isn't The Major Source Of Our Income by Obiagu1(m): 2:16am On Jul 06, 2012
all4naija: Not on GDP dude. On national/government foreign revenue it can be possible.
Even 70% of GDP you stated is impossible in Nigeria.
PoliticsRe: Nigeria's GDP By Sector - Oil Isn't The Major Source Of Our Income by Obiagu1(m): 2:09am On Jul 06, 2012
all4naija: CIA fact file is a good source stating 90% revenue. While Africa news journal put it 40% contribution to GDP. Looking at the prevailing rate of exchange in international market, the nominal GDP contribution on oil to Nigerian economy is as high as 70%.
If you actually know what GDP is, you'll know it's impossible for oil or any sector in Nigeria to contribute up to 90%.

By the way, post your source.
PoliticsRe: Nigeria's GDP By Sector - Oil Isn't The Major Source Of Our Income by Obiagu1(m): 2:02am On Jul 06, 2012
all4naija: It contributes close to 90% revenue and 70% of the GDP!
. . . and where did you get that from?
PoliticsRe: Nigeria's GDP By Sector - Oil Isn't The Major Source Of Our Income by Obiagu1(m): 1:53am On Jul 06, 2012
Sky Blue: The groundwork for that has to start today. This is not about what the ideal is. As things stand right now, if we wake up tomorrow without oil, what do you think will happen? That tax money will magically flow into the budget?
If we wake up tomorrow and oil ceases to flow, we'll have an initial set back but we'll bounce back stronger. Oil has always been seen as a curse because it turned our heads upside down and we pursued it without sense. Oil adds very little to the real economy; easy large revenue with no strong footprint. How many people are employed in the oil/gas sector? Can it be correlated with the amount coming in from that sector? Definitely not, oil simple ruins economy that's why wise Dubai quickly moved into real estate and are better off now.
PoliticsRe: Nigeria's GDP By Sector - Oil Isn't The Major Source Of Our Income by Obiagu1(m):
Ibime: This is an old and silly debate we used to have on Nairaland years back.

Nigerian Government cannot survive without oil.

Large majority of Nigerians do survive without oil.

Can large majority of Nigerians survive without the services Government provides ie roads, hospitals etc etc? No!

Only an undeveloped country sees agriculture contribute 30-40% of GDP.

That basically means a lot of people are surviving for themselves. There is no Western country with more than 5% Agriculture contribution to GDP.
I absolutely disagree with you. If we have no oil, government will be serious with tax collection and that alone will supersede revenue from oil.
Nigeria is fvcked up because our government abandoned tax collection which is the main source of revenue in Western countries. Agriculture and Import/Export are ahead of oil and that's what it is.

If we dump oil today, a mere 15% of our GDP, Nigeria will become better.
CultureRe: Why Can't Edo/benin/urhobo/ishan/isoko Become One Tribe? by Obiagu1(m): 1:33am On Jul 06, 2012
undecided

The “same” or similar?
Portuguese is similar to Spanish why don’t we thus force a sole identity on them? Ah of course because they are pretty much nation states and Nigeria is a heterogeneous country thus the desire to summarize groups most especially minorities.
As regards to your question we all (as well as some other groups) are classified as "Edoid" hence the similarities in language and culture just like the Portuguese and Spanish for example. We are an “Edo” group collectively and some of our histories tie but we still hope to maintain our individuality not out of spite or malice for each other but for our own convenience and wish. I think outsiders should respect the identity we choose to wear not what they think or hope we should be. Notwithstanding we are still siblings but not siamese and we acknowledge each other.
The Edoid groups could become an ethnic group if they follow Ijaw model. However, I don't understand any of the languages in the group so I can say if they are similar in anyway. It could be beneficial to the group in Nigerian context.
CultureRe: Which Tribe In Nigeria Is "Actually" From Nigeria??? by Obiagu1(m): 1:09am On Jul 05, 2012
odumchi: Exactly. However, the sad part is that some of our cultural leaders are beginning to buy into these absurd theories of Middle-Eastern origin.

I think that most southern Nigerian groups branched out of a single ancestral ethnic group. I came about this theory by analyzing the population of certain groups. For example, a hundred years ago, the Igbo were about five million in population; today they are around forty million. If a mere hundred years meant a growth of thirty five miillion then what could have been our population two thousand years ago? Certainly too negligible to form an independent social group.

The Nri Kingdom (which was the first recorded kingdom in southern Nigeria and the first Igbo state) was founded sometime around the year 900 ce and it is given credit (by some) as the "father of the Igbo". This means that the peoples that identify themselves as the Igbo are only a bit older than a thousand years.

This has led me to conclude that a millenia ago, we were probably all members of a larger ethnic group that settled in central Nigeria.
Your assertion is faulty to an extent. You can't use the growth of the Igbo people in the last 100 years to make a definite statement like "too negligible to form an independent social group". Population of a country, if birth control is not in place, tend to explode as they get larger tending from arithmetic progression to geometric progression. For instance, India could double its population in just 20 years while Nigeria could record only a 30% growth in the same 20 years span.

Greeks are a known ethnic group and have been around for so long yet Greece population is a mere 11 million.

If southern ethnic groups were one ethnic group before, then the time they split would be close to the time humans started evolving on earth.

omonuan: Chinenye, saying that Delta Igbo is "technically not Igbo" is the most absurd and despicable thing to say to an Anioma man. This assertion is what irk some some Anioma people into de-emphazing their Igboness. You are no more Igbo than me who is from Delta. Mind you, there is no accreditation board for who is "technically Igbo." You owe Delta Igbo an apology! Being technically Igbo is purely subjective.
Apologies to everyone offended by the statement. It's regrettable but lets all move on; it might not have been ill conceived.

I was offended too until I read Odumchi's clarification.
BusinessRe: Will Walmart's Coming End Igbo Business In Nigeria? by Obiagu1(m): 4:02am On Jul 04, 2012
It's better to prevent Walmart and co from coming to Nigeria; no one knows the dynamics. I've warned about this before. It's not only Igbos that will be affected but the middle class. I hope our government is getting ready for welfare system too for those that will completely lose hope in getting out of poverty.

@ ChinenyeN, it's obvious you can't really express yourself properly. When every "simple" statement you make is misconstrued, then you should know you have problem with expression not matter how well you think you can write.

1: Well, One Naira, what's there to explain? You're Delta state. You're technically not Igbo, in context of this discussion.
This is a very ambiguous statement and in a way, bluntly telling One_Naira that he is technically not Igbo in the context of this discussion because he is from Delta state; therefore, he should step aside.

2: Well, One Naira, what's there to explain? You're from Delta state. You're assumed, by some people, not to be Igbo so you're treated differently from SE Igbos.
Simple clear statement and One_Naira wouldn't be seeking explanation from you for telling him he is not Igbo.
ProgrammingRe: Are You A Real Programmer? Can You Code With Notepad? by Obiagu1(m): 5:09am On Jul 03, 2012
It's for both really. If you know what you're doing, you don't have to test your code every now and then and you don't have to change variables if you really planned your work well. I don't have to change ekt_bear to Obiagu if I found that I might need ekt_bear somewhere else, it's a sign of poorly planned program.
ProgrammingRe: Are You A Real Programmer? Can You Code With Notepad? by Obiagu1(m): 4:46am On Jul 03, 2012
It's not necessarily to memorise the differences but being able to detect errors without external help and be certain what you just coded is correct.

If you want to try it out, code with whatever text editor you want and copy it into your IDE, you'll be amazed at things you used to take for granted.

The OP was just concerned about proficiency, that's it.
ProgrammingRe: Are You A Real Programmer? Can You Code With Notepad? by Obiagu1(m): 4:28am On Jul 03, 2012
If I'm not mistaken, I think the OP's concern is how proficient one is with Command Prompts and knowledge of Programming syntax without the help of IDEs.
ProgrammingRe: Are You A Real Programmer? Can You Code With Notepad? by Obiagu1(m): 4:02am On Jul 03, 2012
Using Notepad to program is like using MSWord without spell check. You'll be good with spelling but your output might be less.
However, it makes sense though to use Notepad; you'll definitely be very good, slower at first but your speed will improve with time.
You'll be more vast and more assured in what you do.

I think it's a good advice for a beginner to start with Notepad, gain efficiency and speed with time but it will be a pain in the a.s.s for older programmers.
