I see that some people have explained rugby so let me try and explain cricket as best as I can because I'm a fan of both sports.
Cricket is played by 11 players on each team. In a team there usually is a batsman(the person you see holding a piece of wood and wearing a helmet),a wicketkeeper batsman(the guy you see standing behind those three sticks),a bowler(the person throwing the small ball),and an all-rounder(a person who can bat and can bowl as well). A bowler can either be a fast bowler or a spin bowler(spin bowlers are those guys that when they throw the ball it turns).
The team is arranged on the preference of the coaches and captain. For example a team can have 4 batsmen including the wicketkeeper batsman,3 all-rounders and 4 bowlers.
There are different forms of cricket. There is test cricket,where they wear white and use red ball,and it can be played for as long as 5 days. There is also one day cricket which is where they wear the coloured clothing and use the white ball. One day cricket can either be ODI or T20 cricket.
Using T20 as an example,this means each team is allowed to bat for 20 overs,if the weather allows them. This is determined by a coin toss,and the team that wins the toss will choose if they want to bat first or bowl first.
In an over,there are 6 deliveries. A delivery is when the bowler runs to the crease(that rectangular piece of ground where the batsmen stay) and throws the ball at the batsman.
The score is in this format,100/3. The first number,100 is the number of runs the team batting has scored. The second number,3 is the number of wickets the team bowling has,which means the number of batsmen they have gotten out.
If the bowler throws the ball at the batsman and he hits the ball out of the pitch it is 6 runs. If it touches the ground or rolls on the ground before it reaches the edge of the pitch it is 4 runs. If the ball is rolling on the pitch but it is caught before it reaches the edge,the batsmen can score runs by running between the stumps(sticks) in the middle.
If the bowler throws the ball and the batsman hits it and a member of the opposing team catches it before it touches the ground then it is a wicket. If the bowler throws the ball and it touches the bat(wood) of the batsman and the wicketkeeper catches it then it is a wicket. If the bowler throws the ball but the batsman hits it and they start running,but the opposing team throws the ball to hit the sticks before the batsman reaches the white line,then it is a wicket known as run out. If the bowler throws the ball but it hits the leg of the batsman in front of the sticks,it will be checked to see if the ball will hit the sticks or not. If it hits the sticks it is also a wicket.
A team will complete their own batting when they have used all the number of overs to score runs,or if the opposing team gets 10 wickets,whichever one happens first. The winner is determined by the team that has scored the most number of runs.
