CelebritiesRe: Pictures Of Baba Suwe In Court by occam(m): 7:47pm On Nov 01, 2011
Why detain this man further? The judge should have set him free today; no need to wait till Nov 4. Now there will be pressure on them to produce result within the next 2 days.

He has been thoroughly humiliated for 3 weeks without any indication he committed any crime. Seriously, can anyone hide cocaine in the stomach for so long and live to tell the tale?

People in authority are so insensitive in this country. Can't they accept the machine probably malfunctioned and apologize? Yet they claim he had some supernatural powers that helped him. People in Govt and position of authority in Nigeria never accept they are wrong

This is so wrong and makes me wonder how many innocent travelers have been framed by this corrupt agency.  I hope he has a good human rights lawyer to sue them. Somebody has to be held responsible for this gross abuse and dehumanizing behaviour.
CelebritiesRe: D'banj Buys A $200K Aston Martin Vantage (Pic) by occam(m): 4:11pm On Oct 31, 2011
harakiri:
You are the one twisting comments out of context. . .

(1)First of all, look up the meaning of the word "hater" or "haterz". It all boils down to people who have ill feelings for those that are more successful than they are. Everything negative comment directed at D'Banj points to that. He bought an Aston Martin (that might not be brand new and some people have indicated that it might be less than $100,000). With all the money he has, he can afford to put a Ferrari Italia on the road if he wants to AND he'll won't go broke from doing that. For goodness sake, people walk into Coscharis all the time to pay for a full optioned Range Rover Vogue (do you know how much that costs in naira?) or Rolls Royce. Why all this noise? Who cares if we don't have good roads? If you want to talk about roads, then people driving Toyota Camry's and Honda Accords are dumb because these cars are low on the ground. . .they should be driving SUV's instead. So what are you people talking about?

(2)Humans have ALWAYS been materialistic. It's not "our culture". It's global. Please, broaden your mind abeg. Why do people study for years acquiring so many degrees? It's because they want to be able to secure their future and live the kind of life style they dream about (not necessarily to educate themselves with the research of others). Why don't you use a Nokia 3310 instead of a Black Berry Torch? Why don't you drive a Kia Picanto when you can afford a CLS mercedes? Why don't you live in a one room apartment in Ajegunle instead of living in a six bedroom mansion in VGC or Abuja? It's because you want the best for yourself. Quit being a hypocrite abeg. If you had the kind of money these guys had, you would live big. Quit hating! ! !

(3)Nobody says everything is about government BUT the major responsibility lies on them. Individuals can do the best they can (that usually goes un-noticed) but the leaders control the resources and power that can change things. For goodness sake, these people give to charity all the time. The problem with you people is that you cannot understand how these people can be so successful to the extent of buying things you might NEVER be able to buy in your lifetime. YES! That is what this is all about. From GLO alone, D'Banj made over N100million on endorsement deals (i stand to be corrected). He collects nothing less than N5million per show. Why on earth would he be driving a Honda civic?

Broaden your mind and quit being so shallow.

Nuff said! ! !
Relax bro! you taking things too serious. No one is hating on D'Banj.  As you said it's his money and he can spend it as he likes. I agree with you

Profligacy is quite common amongst elite sports players and music/film stars. I guess it keeps them in the headline. Michael Jackson did the same, but still worth billions after his death, because he was an astute businessman.

I also read Steve Jobs changed his Mercedes SL 55 AMG every 6 months. Why? click this link and you'll be amused
http://ca.autos.yahoo.com/p/2288/latest-steve-jobs-mystery-revealed-how-he-drove-without-license-plates

D'Banj just be sure he can reinvent and make his music relevant for years to come, to ensure the money rolls in.

Antoine Walker and Latreell Sprewell, two basketball players are good examples of how not to over spend when you're on top. Antoine Walker earned $110 million in 12 yrs and declared bankruptcy.

@Pro-Gaddafi Supporters

I am ashamed of you pro-Gaddafi fellows. In fact I am highly disappointed in you all.
It is beginning to appear to me that some if not most Nigerians can be very d.aft and are

indeed suffering from memory loss.
Again, I have also discovered that "oversabi" is also responsible for some of the comments

you pro-Gaddafi guys make. You all seem to know more than the CIA,FBI,Mossad and KGB etc.I can

bet my manliness some of you know the real real reason why Obama has only 2 daughters, why Bill

Clinton is yet to become a grandfather. In fact you may know why Sarkozy parted ways with his

second wife etc.
Please stop reading conspiracy theories.Conspiracy theorists are entrepreneurs like Seun

Osewa. They will leave you more confused than they met you.

FLASH BACK
An uprising began in Tunisia to oust the President, he left peacefully even before the int'l

press took interest. Ben Ali is still alive.
Next the Egyptians decided Hosni had to go, he tarried a little but after 3 weeks of

demonstration, he left.Hosni Mubarak is still alive.
The Libyans summoned courage and took the best chance of their existence drawing inspiration

from the successful uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt.Gaddafi would not have any of it.He was

ready to crush them from the ground, air and sea (please dont refute this at all).Libyan

soldiers were ordered to fire civilians. Most of them refused and defected to become rebels. In

some instances whole Libyan army formations defected to become rebels hence had weapons to

fight at the beginning.
Obama chose to stay out of it.In fact, at some point, the world criticized him for failing

comment in the Libyan uprising. He advised Nicholas Sarkozy and David Cameron to report Libya

to the UN.Meanwhile, Gaddafi was set to take full control of Libya once again. He was at the

gates of Benghazi and a genocide loomed.Remember that during this period, Misrata was the

only city in the West that was resisting Gaddafi fiercely and without help from any foreign

country and NATO.The Misrata fighters remain my heroes. They eventually fought and pushed

Gaddafi foces out of their city later in the conflict at a time when NATO was still playing

neutral.  Glory be to God in the highest the UN security council voted and endorsed a no-fly

zone over Libya.US, Britain & France started  and the enforced the no-fly zone and soon after

handed over to NATO.Obama was so careful not to lead the initial onslaught and when he did he

ensured it didnt last more than few days before he handed over to NATO. After the handover,

only US drones assisted NATO in the campaign and that was after much persuasion by the

Brits. It is common knowledge that US congress, except John NcCain, were pro Gaddafi and even

took issues with Obama for not taking permission from them before participating in the

military exercise in the first instance.Gaddafi, at some point, wrote to the US congress

thanking them for their support. How could Gaddafi think he could survive the NATO onslaught?
Gaddafi was also very insensitive to the changing times. How? NATO were neutral in the

beginning of their assignment. They openly said they were not after Gaddafi or the overthrow

of his government but the protection of Libyans. They were not even interested in the NTC or

rebels and infact bombed them mistakenly on a number of occasions and wouldnt apologize. At

those times, Gaddafi was still able to address his supporters openly and mingle with his

supporters at green square regularly.
But a stalemate had emerged and neither side wanted to back down. But the rebels were even

more gracious in their offers to Gaddafi. They said all they wanted for him was leave the

nation with his family. He was free to keep whatever he had stolen and was assured immunity

from prosecution. Was this not enough? Shouldnt Gaddafi have taken this more honorable option

and saved his family from destruction? No he wouldnt.Rather he wanted to continue to play a

role in the lives people he had ruled with an iron fist for 42 years.
NATO began to grow weary with the stalemate and with the support and encouragement of France

and Britain they became decisive. The easier option to take out and the "greater" of the 2

"evils" was Gaddafi.
This shift in NATO principle/mission became evident the day NATO began to bomb Gaddafi's Bab

Az Ziziyah compound in Tripoli. All of a sudden Gaddaffi couldnt come out in the open to

address his supporters, he could no longer mingle with his "loyalists" in green square. He

had become a fugitive and a fugitive he remained till death.
After Tripoli fell, the NTC gave Gaddafi and his loyalists ample time to surrender in both

Sirte and Bani Walid. But they wouldnt.Gaddafi still had the chance to escape and remain alive

today.Once agan he blew it.I think he was doomed to be destroyed. God must have hardened his

heart to destroy him like he did to Pharaoh in the bible. Why? He called himself King of

Kings. He decided to share Jesus' title with him.No man does that and lives.God cannot be

mocked. Never!!!
END OF FLASH BACK

I think I have been able to refresh/restore most parts of you pro-Gaddafi guys' memories as

regards events in Libya.
I want to ask.
Why is it that you guys always compare Gaddafi/Libya/Libyans with Nigerian

leaders/Nigeria/Nigerians in an attempt to score or rate him well.I think this is very

bad.Everyone knows Nigeria/Nigerians are not in the best of times. Is Nigeria the only country

in the world or in Africa?
How can you compare Libya with a population of between 6 million and 7 million and making

more money from oil with Nigeria of 150 million people? Is that not ridiculous? Even Abacha

would have done well if he were the Libyan leader.
Now to Abacha, he ruled us with an iron fist for just about 5 years yet the memories of the

Abacha reign of terror(except for RAM-Random Access Memory based memories of your) still send

shrills down the spines of Nigerians. The news of his death brought such celebration and

rejoicing in virtually every nook and cranny of the country.Who said he didnt have good

intentions for Nigeria. Was he not already looking up to Gaddafi for mentorship? So if

Nigerians could rejoice at the gruesome death of someone who ruled them for 5 years, how much

more the Libyans who were trampled upon for 42 years.Till today no investigation has been

carried out into Abacha's sudden death. And nobody has even cared to ask.

The truth is Gaddafi may have been loved initially, but he expired and did not know it.Better

still, he refused to accept it.He thought he could continue to buy the conscience of the

Libyan people with the pittance he paid them - the pittance you Gaddaffi loyalists so eagerly

crave for.But it doesnt work that way.
The Libyans have made their choice. Please abide by it and rejoice with them.Uneasy lies the

head that wears the crown.
Also, stop taking panadol for another person's headache.Leave them alone to bear the

consequnce of their actions.Of what benefit was Gaddaffi to you when he was in power? Those

who were "benefitting" from him said they are tired of him.Na by forcehuh Mind your business

and face Nigeria our dear country.

@OP
Obama is very right.Dictators all over the world should start thinking of stepping down

honourably. But the thing is, they never learn from history.
Thanks a lot for this excellent narrative. I don't know why Nigerians feel such strong passion and love for this despot when his OWN people hated him so much.

Can anyone list just 3 things he did to help Africa develop? He only gave money to corrupt African leaders under the guise of development projects.

Good news: Gadaffi's demise will be forgotten within a month and the whole world can breathe a sigh of relief and say thank God another despot bites the dust.
WebmastersRe: Advertisement Vs Search Engine Optimization by occam(m): 7:05pm On Oct 27, 2011
For optimal result, you have to do both. SEO and SEM (Search Engine Marketing) work in tandem. SEO is definitely more cheaper & more effective, but you will need SEM to bring in specific targeted audience. The only question is how much you want to budget for advertising. Fortunately with Google Analytics and similar tracking tools you can always determine effectiveness of your spend and optimize.

SEM can also help bring new potential customers to your site. How? Analysis of your Search result may uncover some "long tail keywords" that are generating traffic to your site. You can then develop an effective SEM campaign to take advantage of these keywords.

Let's say you sell men's shoes to North America customers, you expect most of your audience to come from these geographic area. However, your Search results may indicate some keywords that are bring high quality visitors from another part of the world. You may then use SEM to quiclky acquire more of this kind of audience.

In case you don't want to read the full article, some highlights:

- Qaddafi Was Worth More Than $200 Billion By Far The Richest Person In The World

- Muammar Qaddafi was three times as rich as Carlos Slim and ten times richer than King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia — easily the richest man in the world.

- How did he get so rich?
"King of Kings" Qaddafi had uncontested personal control over the largest oil reserves in Africa for the past 41 years.

-Unlike Abdullah and other oil-rich leaders, Qaddafi invested little money in national infrastructure like schools and hospitals or any kind of economic diversification. What money Qaddafi did spend went largely to buy support from African leaders.

- While much of this money was held by government institutions like the Central Bank of Libya and the Libyan Investment Authority, Qaddafi was able to withdraw money at will.

Hitler: By April 1945, with Soviet soldiers closing in, Hitler shot himself in the head while his wife Eva Braun took poison.

Italian dictator Benito Mussolini tried to escape for Switzerland, but was caught and summarily executed. His body and that of his mistress were hung by the heels in Milan next to a garage and mutilated by passersby.

Elena Ceaucescu and Nicolae Ceaucescu faced a TV camera on Christmas day in 1989. They were executed by firing squad shortly after and buried in marked graves in a public cemetery in Bucharest.

Notorious Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot was the architect of the Khmer Rouge's 1975-79 "killing fields" rule during which more than a million Cambodians were killed. He died in 1998, his body burned on a pyre of burning tires and debris.

DON'T try to compare Qaddafi to Mandela angry angry

Without Qaddafi's support you won't have a Mandela!! He was at the forefront of fighting apartheid!!

People, this is who leaders should strive through discipline to be like. This is a man that has massive wealth yet dwells in tents, he knows the real owners of his country and also understand that since history isn't reversible, we can only try to make the best of it. I was offered free education, health care and even pocket money to stay in Libya because my uncle works there as a top doctor and my mom was a cardiologist in Libya for years whenever a leader from Nigeria visits Libya, Qaddafi calls my mom, uncle and step dad for a welcoming ceremony.

My experience with Qaddafi and in Libya is one of paradise. I can stay out and play all day in the park with my friends and like they do every kid that's out playing when it gets dark, the soldiers simply come  and find our parent's home to take us to. Peaceful, I wasn't a Muslim, I wasn't a Christian either infact Qaddafi himself tho a Muslim was searching for the root of the religion. He had historical research centers in Tripoli and Benghazi where Pan Africanists, social engineers etc,  come to research history of the African people and their historical relation to Islam and Christianity.

My 3 years in Libya as child was one of the brightest part of my childhood. I can tease a soldier on the street with no gun shot. You can take their gun if you catch them sleeping and seriously the only trouble you get in is some boogie man yelling at you with no right to hit you,  It is only those who entered Libya illegally that Qaddafi feared will ruin his nation. Seriously, the world has lost an example!!

Libya is the only Muslim majority nation I can live in without discrimination. Qaddafi puts African religions and Islam at the top of his mind! He is visionary. forget his arrogance. If Obomber get such wisdom, vision and power, he'd be even more arrogant,
Wow! what  a statement. I suggest you read your history books on liberation of South Africa

Foreign AffairsRe: Condolence Register For Ghadaffi : by occam(m): 5:41pm On Oct 24, 2011
A big picture perspective for all Gadaffi apologists:

Quality education, food, good health and quality housing are all fundamental right of every citizen in all countries. That Gadaffi ensured people did not starve is not disputed. Sadly, in African we are quick to hail this kind of achievement as a beacon of great leadership.

Gaddafi however, used repressive tactics to deny most Libyans political freedom and right to justice. He took away from the right to think and aspire in life; this is what they were fighting for. He denied them the right to chart their own destiny and right to make their own mistakes.

No matter how you slice and dice it, 42 yrs was just too long. Gaddafi stopped listening and no longer understood aspirations of his people, particularly the younger generation. In the end, they got tired and rose against him. This is the way despotic regimes always end.

Gadaffi portrayed himself as a Pan-African leader fighting against colonialism and a lot of Africans drank this cool aid; it was all a fraud perpetuated on Africans. The man was simply a cunning leader who used his enormous wealth to buy off leaders of African countries.

Africans should stop thinking about food, clothing and housing alone. Only societies that encourage freedom of thought and expression can develop

EducationRe: Solarin's Widow Locks Mayflower School In Protest by occam(m): 4:49pm On Sep 22, 2011
As an ex-May, I’m very apprehensive of the push to privatize Mayflower School. And to see ex-mays championing this cause is really very painful. Tai Solarin was a fervent believer in equal and unfettered education for all. This means education, especially at primary and secondary level funded and managed by the state. Privatization goes against this ethos.

Mayflower has been a public school since 1976, so I’m befuddled why some ex-mays now believe that privatizing Mayflower is the right approach. Falling standards is a reflection of the decay in all sectors (health, education, transportation etc) of public institutions in Nigeria. Mayflower school does not exist in a vacuum and to expect that standards will improve when privatized, is folly.

The increasing calmour to privatize is simply letting govt off the hook. "Education is a right for all and not a privilege for the rich" Lets all remember that there are millions of Nigerian children that are being denied this right.

When you consider that most of these kids trek long distance to school; it’s not a frivolous spending.

Per unit cost for the scandal is $20 or N3, 200 (N48 million/15,000). On average, a decent shoe costs N4, 000 in most Nigerian markets; so the quoted amount makes sense. Designer kids shoes will cost triple that in Nigeria.

Its time for fathers and men to stand up and defend their girls. A lot of things done in Yoruba culture are designed to only respect MEN, but these men do not show love for their wife/children. Far too many irresponsible men in our society are being shielded by our archaic culture.

The most depressing aspect is men that are educated continue to perpetuate these acts of oppression against women, in the name of culture.

When are we going to start preaching LOVE in our society vs. upholding archaic retrogressive practices? Why shouldn't a man protect his daughter (single or married) against abuse?

That the Chinese are creating alternative export markets to the US is smart business logic . . .unlike Nigeria where we sell more than 60% of our crude oil to the US alone - a clearly risky venture.

Decades ago, China and India had the poorest households but the story is totally different today. A quick glance at any forbes listing will convince you - China in particular has added hundreds of forbes rated $ millionaires than any other country in the world in the last 5years. Infact just the other day, Bentley said they sold far more GTs in 2010 in China alone than Europe and Africa combined. And the story is similar for other luxury brands as well. If you are still in doubt take a trip to Shanghai. This is evidence that the disposable income available within the domestic consumer market has increased substantially (almost) to the point of cushioning adverse shocks in exports.

Sound economic strategy and huge lessons for Nigeria.

True, its sound business strategy for China to diversify its export market but doesn't mean they have to dump their cheap goods on Nigeria. What we need is strong partnership to help develop our own manufacturing sectors. People say China is helping most African countries develop their industries; but not much evidence yet. Personally, I believe China simply wants to control the vast natural resources in Africa. And what do we get in return? Nothing, plus 20th century styled colonialism. That's the way I see it. One of the reasons I'm really wary of this love dance with China and Nigeria.

Also since the Yuan is strictly controlled by Beijing, not market forces, how can we be sure we’ll get a fair deal with any currency swapping agreement or bond investment?

On your observation (bolded): Chinese urban dwellers may be doing very well but the level of abject poverty in rural areas is truly astounding. Most Chinese people live in villages.

Sounds like a step in the right direction.

A significant portion of our imports save cars and possibly refined petroleum products come from China - Igbo Kwenu!!!

Over the next few years as China wrestles the remnants of economic and political supremacy from the US, there will be a lot of currency devaluation, manipulation and all the other "tions". To reduce the effect of this power tussle on Nigeria, it is only sensible to denominate the reserves in the Yuan . . . and I suspect it will be more than the 10% announced.
So buying Yuan bond is a smart move when even the Chinese have more confidence in U.S. bonds as a safe haven compared to their own unverifiable Yuan. What exactly is the Yuan worth? Besides, the lifeblood of the Chinese economy is the U.S. Visit any Walmart store and you’ll begin to understand why China is totally dependent on U.S consumers

Why don’t we develop our own local industries and encourage export instead of buying Yuan bonds? China is simply looking for more market to dump its low quality products; hence the reason it’s opening up the tightly controlled bond market to gullible African countries.

China has a very weak consumer market, totally dependent on exports to Europe and the US, currency is artificially pegged lower than the dollar and still one of the poorest countries in the world. All this talk about Yuan becoming an international currency is wishful thinking.
BusinessRe: CBN To Switch 5-10% Of Forex Reserves To Chinese Yuan by occam(m): 9:12pm On Sep 05, 2011
How is this a good move? Looks more of a symbolic gesture than practical economic sense.

China currently invests about $1.3 trillion in U.S. Treasury bond and continues to increase its holding. Why? U.S. is the largest and freest capital market and despite the S & P downgrade, U.S. T-bill is still a very safe and solid investment. So while China is investing in T-bills, Nigeria wants to diversify our reserve into Chinese yuan; a currency no one can determine its real value.

The authorities in Beijing control capital flows and the exchange rate to remain competitive. The Chinese yuan is kept artificially low against dollar and other major currency to ensure its exports are very low. This is one of the reasons why goods from China are very cheap. Also, Chinese companies employs all kinds of anti-labour practices to keep prices low e.g. use of child labour in factories.

We only need to look at the shady practices of Chinese companies in Nigeria and pause before investing our foreign reserve in such an economy. China is a very closed economy where information flow is restricted. We'll never know when the economy is tanking before its too late.  Frankly, some of the rosy predictions on the Chinese economy is based on manipulated data from Beijing.

Sanusi needs to think about this move carefully and longer term implications for our economy.

The idea of a visiting father in-law even sounds weird - especially if he intends to stay overnight or for several days. Very weird indeed. That role is typically for mothers and mothers in-law. Na wa for some agbaya men sef.
hmnnn you're correct; its very rare for FILs (especially the wife's father) to visit

Seun:
I plan to do this just once a year.

The view count of a thread will therefore approximate the popularity of a thread in the last two years.

Old threads not currently drawing any views will gradually fall to the bottom.
In that case, why don't you track "Unique Visits" to each tread to measure popularity. Unique visits tells you how many people viewed the thread not how many times it was viewed. Its a more accurate measurement of popularity than simply dividing number of views by 2. How?

For instance, if one users views a thread 40 times it only counts as 1 unique Visit. So you can quickly see the threads that more people or users viewed. "Replies" then gives you a sense of how many times people/users make comments.

CareerRe: Is Marketing The Most Unstable And Insecure Job? by occam(m): 2:29am On Aug 29, 2011
It's one of the most exciting business profession. The issue is that a lot of companies do not understand the real meaning of marketing; most equate it with Sales job. Yes, as a sales person you are required to meet or exceed specific target.

As a marketer, you must possess excellent communication and solid analytic skills. As well, you must be very creative and have good knowledge of emerging technologies.

Information technology has increased demand for experts in database marketing, digital marketing and marketing analytics. You can find jobs in banks, telecoms, technology, ecommerce retainers and so on.

yes, she may have asked GEJ to let her do this. Seems a lot of people believe she's the white knight in shining armor to rescue the economy. Hope she doesn't get swarmed and start the finger pointing game.
