Career / Re: 10 Ways To Recognize Ponzi Schemes by occam(m): 3:03pm On Jun 17, 2021
ThierryJay:
Are all pyramid schemes ponzi schemes? Schemes backed by products such as Forever living, Trevo, GNLD etc are all pyramid schemes. Do they also qualify as Ponzi cos they are still around after all these years.

Ponzi scheme or pyramid are brothers. Their cousin is MLM (multi level marketing). If you have to attend a seminar to get the gist of the investment or introduced to the product; just run away. And if it takes more than 3 mins to understand the business model; it’s definitely a pyramid

Nigeria is a fertile ground for Ponzis/pyramids. I bet couple are running as we speak. People won’t listen because too many Nigerians believe they are smart. They don’t ask questions or think asking questions means you’re a dullard.

Just the jobless Naijas doing dead end jobs ( cleaners, cab, janitors) are the ones out there protesting. They’ve been living in London, Canada, USA for years and can’t make headway. The only purpose now is to hide their failures and blame it on Buhari. Don’t let them scatter Nigeria. Tell them to stay put and get there life together. They’re only scared of spending there old age in the cold because they never figures out path to success in London.

If you look at the video, you’ll see it’s the frustrated and old niggas that are out there. You won’t find business minded or professionals living abroad supporting this crap.

I see a lot of them over here and understand their motives. Don’t let them deceive to burn down Nigeria

Politics / Re: Nigeria Loses ₦2 Billion Daily To Twitter Ban - NetBlocks (Sahara Reporters) by occam(m): 4:55pm On Jun 07, 2021
People need to pump the brake on this Twitter. How did they calculate that Nigeria loses 2bn every day? Nigerians advertise on Twitter and all that ad revenue goes to Twitter, Not Nigerians. They don't pay tax in Nigeria and employ few Nigerians. In fact, worldwide they made $3b which is tax-sheltered in Bermuda. Right now, the EU is fighting Twitter & other social media to pay tax on income earned in their countries.

People can switch to Facebook and Instagram to advertise their products. These are even more effective in driving sales. Twitter is primarily used to propagate political or social messages. The very reason it was banned in China. And Chinese economy is thriving without it

So I don't see the reason for all the noise about the impact on our economy. I think this is an opportunity to develop a local digital marketing platform and steal some of the 40 million Twitter users in Nigeria. Our local tech companies can earn the ad revenue instead. A prolonged ban on Twitter may be a silver lining for our own local platforms to shine.
Crime / Re: Iyabo Ojo & Princess Storm Panti Over Attempt To Bail Baba Ijesha (Video) by occam(m): 7:58pm On Apr 29, 2021
murmee:
So it is okay to make the girl go through another trauma, 7 years after, just to prove a point? My dear, it is a well scripted set up!

A Judge may see this as entrapment and even worse consider their action endangering the life of a minor. Never put a child through trauma just to collect evidence. Why wasn't a criminal complaint filed 7 years ago or when the child told them?
Crime / Re: Defilement: Baba Ijesha May Be Released On Friday – Police by occam(m): 5:49pm On Apr 29, 2021
This video means nothing. The guy didn’t confess to anything. He just said the devil caused it and he that he has spiritual problems. Not once did he say “I molested the girl”. Stupid people posting stuff like this online will make this guy walk free. Besides 7 yrs ago no accusation, prosecution or conviction. Judges only deal with facts and evidence. Emotions on social media is just random noise.

A good defence lawyer will shred this video to pieces in court. He’ll tell the judge his client is afraid of being beaten hence agreeing to all the accusation by the amateur interrogators.

Stay off social media and let police & court handle criminal cases
Crime / Re: I Caught Baba Ijesha With CCTV - Comedian Princess Reveals, Breaks Down In Tears by occam(m): 8:12pm On Apr 28, 2021
AdeolaOmoOba:
I don't trust Princess-Crocodile-Tears who seems to be highly economical with the truth. First it was 7 years of molestation, then it became twice. Maybe it will eventually become non-existent, who knows? I am not siding with Baba Ijesha either, neither am I siding with the child until thorough investigation is carried out. Rapists deserve death sentence, not to talk of child molesters. In conclusion, there is something fishy about this case which is not yet clarified. It could be a brewing relationship between Princess and Baba Ijesha, it could be a setup, it could be a true evil act, but hear this word of wisdom:

Never in your life judge a case based on the emotional expressions of a woman, most especially tears.

Why would a parent put a child at the risk of molestation just to prove a point, without prior notification of security agencies? Is she a detective? Princess should also be arrested. What if Baba Ijesha did not fall for the trap? What would have happened? She will reset another trap or what? Using an innocent and traumatized child as bait? Princess, you also deserve jail.

Exactly what I thought. Using a traumatized child to entrap a potential molester is criminal. Why not report the matter to the cops and let them investigate. So the girl had to be abused again to gather evidence? Very sickening

I beg to differ. Those agitating for secession are people like you and I who live here, people whom they've told were the future of Nigeria but are now growing grey hair under their parents' care...no future for them rather, their Children are holding away. Where is electricity , Good road, security...yes...security, jobs, etc which they promised us since independence? Leave those in the diaspora out of this. They don't live here, neither do they feel the pain. They're only empatsing. Leave same greedy politicians who would never welcome secession out this , those who are feeding fat in this union and would never want such to happen. Get your facts right , ekiti isn't one of the poorest.

My facts are right: Ekiti is the 35th state in terms of IGR. Only Jigawa ranks lower

Are Fulanis responsible for our problems? Have you ever asked your local government chairman or governors how they are spending FAAC allocations? Secession will not solve the fundamental problem of Nigeria: corruption & lack of accountability. In fact most African nations have been ravaged by this double headed monster.

Progressive nations with multiple ethnic groups have figured out ways to coexist and prosper. Find out how India with over 2,000 ethnic groups is moving up. Enough said

grin

You know what? They know this would definitely happen. They can't stop it. Its obvious but they'd keep defending their means of livelihood. They can run away anytime through their escape route, but only waiting for the d-day. This professors losing jobs isn't today's saying. Before abacha created ekiti state out of the old ondo state, same was tabled before his government that should ekiti be carved out of ondo, the majority of the civil servants in the old ondo state who made up of 55% of the workforce of ekiti people , would end up in farms, including their lecturers and Permanent secretaries. Amazingly, this never happened. Same scenario played out in osun when they were carved out of old oyo state , governor bisi askande was faced with job issues but later, things became normal.

Same is happening after Brexit as we speak and the UK are now busy looking for professionals. Last year alone, they recruited thousands of health workers from Nigeria alone. My cousin who was an IT personnel thought of relocating to Canada before brexit but now, his pay was almost tripled with promotion, just to discourage him from leaving the UK by his employer. We will all be alright, should we break up. Any country carved out of Nigeria who is deficient in various sectors can hire from yorubaland. Then they'd be paid in dollars.

Leave all those greedy leaders alone. Lai mohamed had no single company. Their companies are their various political offices they hold, where they're stealing tax payers money to maintain their health. What job would someone like lai muhamed get at his age, should we break up? That's their fear. We don't care how they feel. Secession is inevitable and its only then we can be alright and self-reliant. This union is fake....I'm yoruba before people would start thinking the comment was put up by an ipob. The ongoing revelation about pantami is as a result of the stupidity and selfishness of our southern leaders. They're the ones who pulled us into this mess all in the name of money.

How can someone like pantami be nominated to occipy such a sensitive office/ministry and the senate would approve his nomination, just like that without digging into his past or carrying out due diligence about him? If you say its not right, they'd say he's being witch-haunted even though pantami himself knew those revelations were true about him and has said they were his past and things had changed now...I've never seen a terrorist change his ideology. They can only hide it. The phone numbers, BVN and NIN of key personalities in Nigeria are in his palms and he can do anything, should they gbemu, anytime. They can track them down on the highway, anywhere and take their lives. I never believed my beloved country could turn this way. These people mean business but we're just underestimating it

You paint a rosy picture of aftermath of seccssion. Fact is nobody knows; all just speculating. The agitation is driven by Nigerain disaporans, irredentist elements and political commentators. All these people have no skin in the game (no investment/minmal ties to Nigeria) and will quickly dissapear when things get tough. The man on the street just wants a job, good health sysytem, security and live in decent homes. In short, an economy that works. Nostalgia about Yoruba prowess means nothing in the modern world. Just Past glory. Ethnic diversity is one of the main reasons Lagos remains the only economical viable Yoruba nation. Other factors like benefits of former capital status & sound management can be included.

Osun & Ekiti you mentioned, are 2 of the poorest states in Nigeria. So what have they gained as independent states? Kogi too

Britain left EU because they were always skeptical about the union. In fact, they were dragged kicking and screaming into the EU.

Secession is not the answer. You will only transfer oppression from nation level to local fiefdoms. It's the same corrupt players and elites pushing this agitation to have their own dominion. They have no vision or plan for the masses.
Politics / Re: Obaseki: "FG Printed 60 Billion Naira For States To Share" by occam(m): 9:41pm On Apr 10, 2021
Obaseki is just huffing & puffing. What is he doing to raise internal revenue for Edo state? The ratio of government spending to GDP is more important. In 2020, this ratio was 12%, lower than many countries in Africa.

Nigeria GDP was $400b; though still low. However This shows there is growth opportunity in private sector

Government at all levels are useless. They’re just pocketing FAAC money without developing infrastructures. We’ve all known for over 10yrs that demand for oil will decrease with move towards greener energy. Lamenting now about reduced oil revenue is dumb. instead how do We develop Information technology, agro processing, tourism, green energy, manufacturing? This is what he should be talking about

soojar:

Somebody said the article is full of half information. No, the information is actually enough and adequate for those that have a bit of economics background or knows how to read and understand English Language.

Based on the bolded above you will see that many of the people shouting Lagos is this and that are either economics illiterates or lack basic understanding of English language. Do you know what the IGR of lagos state is? (well over 40billion monthly as at last year and this year the target is 60billion monthly), know how much that is in a year?

If that were to be used as the base instead of federal govt monthly allocation (because many states have close to zero IGR according to the author), Lagos wont be where you are seeing it there, rather its many of these so called oil rich states you will see that are over borrowing despite nothing to show for it.

That said, somebody should tell me what Osun state is doing there or is that state not to have been shared among other states? or sold to the highest bidder? Zero revenue, insignificant federal allocation, yet kept borrowing, na wa o. Ogun state is still okay, because it's tapping from the development in Lagos and its IGR is also climbing steadily over the years.

Begs the question how economically viable is Odudwa nation? When you ask, they tell you “when we get there we’ll think about it”. Except for Lagos & Ogun, other states in SW will go bankrupt without federal allocation. They tell you they have things to bring in revenue. Like what? Oh we have Cocoa, tourism, gold, bitumen. So how come they’re not bringing in revenue today?

Secessionist advocate for a Republic of Biafra should look carefully at the map of Nigeria before they decide. Be very careful what you wish for. Unless Cross River & Akwa Ibom agrees to be part of the new nation, Biafra republic will become a landlocked entity dependent solely on Nigeria.

Your republic will be a densely populatated parcel of land dependent on your perceived enemy to trade with other parts of the world. You will have to pay high duty cost to Nigerian customs before you can ship in goods to you so called Republic.

A word is enough for the wise. Don't let Kanu drive you to imminent disaster and isolation. If you still insist on breaking away, no problem, ciao, aurevoir, odabo, bye

Business / Re: Naira Slides To 405/$ Amid Tight Dollar Supply by occam(m): 5:05pm On Apr 08, 2017
Reference:

Then you are not a very brilliant person. You could have just waited for the assailant to run out of bullets as he fired wastefully away. Next time look at the fundamentals. Has the oil price appreciated significantly, no. Has government expenditure (waste) reduced significantly, no. Has the government evolved diverse income, no. Has government been able to attract serious FDI, no. Then why are you selling instead of buying. Isn't it obvious even to a dummy that the naira rise was woefully unsustainable and that it was just a political ruse and an opportunity for high level government theft through currency round tripping. That economic fundamentals may have just improved by an inch but the naira was subsidized by a mile. Now 'Team Toothpick' importers have arisen like the elephant grass at the scent of the new rainy season and they will be a thorn in the nation's economy going forward.

Nigeria is like a malaria or tuberculosis patient who will not take his medications seriously. The result is intransigent poverty and economic damage. Reforms are painful whether we like them or not. What we abuse the likes of the IMF for is what we have to face to survive. And whether we like it or not a weak naira is the only way to drag a stubborn, lazy Nigerian to diversify and produce stuff. Go to any major city of Nigeria and find all roads and highways dotted with 'shops'. Few make, everyone sells. That is poverty on display.

I have said it time and again. Nigeria needs a socio-economic overhaul, a renaissance where restructuring is complimented by sound free market policies of which the free exchange of the naira is compulsory. Government has no business setting the rate of the naira when its share of the economy is in the minority. Nigerians have much more money that all of government. Why should government dictate how much the naira trades for. This is the sad result.

I like your analogy (bold) This CBN has no clue how to manage the economy. China with over $3 trillion in foreign reserve continues to increase their coffers, yet Nigeria with a meagre $30 billion is using it to subsidize parents sending their children to schools abroad. Go figure! This policy is very dysfunctional and smells of corruption.

Exchanging nearly $2 billion at subsidized rate (370) for invisible (BTA, school fees), when real rate is 410, is an "implicit tax" on productive sectors of the economy and other people not benefiting from this corrupt driven policy.

Any Government attempting to defer the FX market eventually fails. When speculators smell blood, the CBN will quickly back off this policy of trying to keep naira value at a fixed rate. Let the market determine naira rate. Period. We focus on policies to increase local production and export of goods. Anything else, is just hoping for magic to turn the economy around.
