It was there in koran that wearing of hijab is optional, it was never Allah directive to female muslims.Hijab wearing was in practice by Arabs before the coming of Muhammed.
It is you Nigeria muslims that is making hijab a big deal because of wahabi conservative lifestyle in Saudi Arabia that Nigeria sunni muslim was copying.

Quran says that a female child have to reach of age to decide wether she will wear hijab, hijab is arab dress code not Allah injuction, Arabs in the deserts had been wearing hijab before the coming of muhammed to protect their hair against desert dust and wind, male arabs also wear hijab even now.
Even some Arab muslim countries that understand koran more than black african muslims have ban the use of hijab because it cause female children to suffocate under high temperature and also causes smelling and menengities. The real Arabs muslims dont even allow this black African muslims to near the inner kaaba.

Some muslim countries ban the use of hijab in their country eg Tunisia which is close to arabs ban the use of hijab in 90's.
