Eze Promoe: [color=scarlet]There is no point of confusion in these two words as they both are two different words. Gh is pronounced just as someone who finds it difficult to pronounce letter R. E.g of this is Ughelli, a place in Delta state. While H is pronounced how its been pronounced.
In the e.g you gave above, lets use igho and iho for example. They are two different words remember. Igho means to turn into while iho means to select.[/color]
I don't quite understand what you're trying to say. Tonally, there is no difference between the pronunciation of "to turn into" and "to choose". My question is so then why is there a difference in their spelling?

What is the significance of 'gh'?
[Without studying Igbo in school] How do you know when to write 'gh' instead of 'h'?

I wasn't explaining myself. I was just trying to find out who these "colored" people you were comparing to China were.

The Igbo peoples' settlement patterns differ from that of the Yoruba, like Ezeagu and Abagworo have said before me.

I still have no idea what you're referring to. I do not refer to myself as "colored" nor do I know any people that refer to themselves as such.

ChinenyeN: Are you on mobile or a computer? I know in my experience, the site doesn't work well with mobile and that no matter how I tried to search words, it would always return "no results found". So, if you're attempting to access it via mobile then that may be the issue.

If you're not accessing it via mobile but rather on a computer, then may I ask what browser you are using? I have IE (Internet Explorer), Google Chrome and FireFox on my laptop, and the site worked fine with all three.
Thanks. All this while, I've been on a mobile device but I've just tried it from a computer and it worked. That's pretty strange, though.

It's a nice dictionary, by the way. I like how it gives translations across multiple dialects.

Mrs.Chima:
A long essay won't change the truth.

If you honesty feel China is worsee off than colored folks..why are you trippinghuh

Bitter truth hurts huh?
Could you narrow down your comparison? What particular country [in Africa] are you comparing China to?

ezeagu: The one that works the best is English-Igbo. Maybe the words you searched are not there.
I tried searching common words like "come" and "water" but no results. The only things that I got results for were "Igbo" and "Igbo language".

@odumchi and all,
I see you're advising her not to give up on Africa and to study or focus on Africa's beauty.
But truth be told, I don't know if it's because I am not African, but I feel the biggest critics of the "pro African" vision ARE AFRICANS. lol. An African would be the quickest to call someone Afro. centric and unreasonable if they try to get other black people/Africans to understand about African cultures and seeing Africa in a "macro" perspective.

It's really sad.
Could you give an example of "seeing Africa in a macro perspective"? And are you saying that she should give up on her identity?
CultureRe: An Online Igbo Dictionary by odumchi(mod): 10:03am On Dec 30, 2012
How do you use it? I keep on typing in words but it keeps on saying "no results found".

Dede1: I do not think it is prudent for student of music to base issue of fact simply on lyrics. Musicians are known to sing songs composed by a member of their bands. In the case of Celestine Ukwu with alleged song “Uso Ndu”-“Ka anyi welunu ofu obi bili na udo na Ndokwa”, I deduce it is connected with Emma Ikediashi who happened to be Celestine Ukwu’s lead guitarist.

Internet is one of the greatest inventions of mankind but it has unimaginable flaws.
Although I'm still not sufficiently convinced that he hails from Enugu, I'll respect what you said. The fact still remains that Celestine Ukwu actually did say so and it equally wouldn't be fair to assume that that particular line was connected to his guitarist since there isn't any apparent evidence to suggest so. But then again, his dialect sounds akin to what you'd hear outside of Ndokwa. You might be right.

Thanks Ogugua and Eze. This is interesting.

Another question I have is this:

When writing, how do you know when to use 'gh' and when to use 'h'? A couple of examples are:

Deciet - ughoro or uhoro?

To conjur - igha or iha?

To leave alone - ighapu or ihapu?

To turn into - igho or iho?

And of these, which one is the proper way of saying "I know" in standard Igbo or are both acceptable?

Is it "amam" or "m ma"?
CultureRe: Igbo learning thread + Translator by odumchi(mod): 12:33am On Dec 30, 2012
I have a question: how do you properly write expressions like "look at", "I don't know", and "I know" in standard written Igbo?

Which one is correct?

Leekwanu or leekwa nu or lee kwa nu

Amaghi m or Amaghim

Nne, I'm not going to force you to do anything, but I would advise you to turn your attention towards your people and their past. I implore you to not lose hope in Africa (and Nigeria) but to endeavor to learn more and more about her and her peoples, and most especially [our] Igbo people. Take the time to look into Nigeria and find out the beauty hidden within it amid all of its "backwardness" and "filthy corruption". When you do this you will then ask yourself these questions: why did God lead my parents out of this country? What is my purpose in this country?

Hopefully you will realize that God led you and your family out of Nigeria and into Great Britain in order for you to bring back good things to those you left behind. Although you may not know it, there are millions of people who look up to us [diasporans], and simply choosing to ignore our roots and focus only on our selves and our personal desires lets them down oils the wheel of perpetual suffering that's spinning in Africa.

why suffer and stress myself for something that is likely to not work...
Imagine what our world would be like if people always thought like this? A world devoid of a United States of America; a world without much of the rudimentary inventions that ease our daily struggles; a world without thinkers, leaders, and people who are willing to expand mankind's borders of imagination: a very dull world.
CultureRe: Why Do Poeple Eat More Chicken Than Fish During Christmas by odumchi(mod): 1:41pm On Dec 28, 2012
It's one of those unmentioned traditions. Around the Christmas period, every family kills a small animal in order to officiate their own celebration. The average family will kill chickens or goats but the wealthier kill cows.

Thanks for your submissions, guys.

And Iwe Oru, thank you for offering your opinion. We are all working together to make the culture section a more peaceful and learning-conducive place where everyone is welcomed. Like you said, as human beings we all share similar ambitions, fears, and desires; therefore it is our duty as cultured individuals to use this place as a medium to express the common beauty found within our diverse identities and our rich histories.

Dede1: To the best of my knowledge, Celestine Ukwu hailed from Abor in Enugu state not the Aboh of Ndokwa, Delta State. Abor in Enugu state is part of the Ojebe Ogene clan of Igbo land made up of over 13 towns like Okpatu, Ebe, Ukana, Ukeghe, Umulumgbe, etc to mention a few.

Victor Uwaifo is a Benin indigene.

I guess one can not talk about “hotbeds of highlife music” when musicians mentioned were apprentices to the likes of Mike Ejeagha and Stephen Amechi.

I do not know more prominent figures in highlife music in Igbo land than the stars that led bands such as Three Night Wizards, African Rhythm Messengers, African Baby Party, Eastern Brothers, Eastern Minstrel Band, Peacock International Band, Abaraka Dance Band, Skylarks International Band, Oriental Brothers and Entertainment Group
In his song "Uso Ndu", Celestine Ukwu said: "Ka anyi welunu ofu obi bili na udo na Ndokwa"; that's why I am saying that he is from Delta.

Thanks for the correction on Victor Uwaifo, I meant to say a different Victor who is from Delta. To me, it seems as if it just boils down to a matter of personal opinion. In my opinion: it's Anambra and Delta, while in yours it's apparently Imo.

Nwanna, I gbaliala. "Nsu" means "strange/non-Igbo language" and not nickname, by the way.
