Eze Promoe: In my own dialect (Idemili). We describe it as thus:
turn on the light- gbayi oku
turn off the light- gbanyuo oku
In some dialects, the 'ny' sound is omitted. Words like gbanye (turn on), tinye (put), and bunye (carry) are pronounced as: gbai, tii, and bui. Is Ikwere the same way?

Most-cultured Nairalanders,

I can hardly believe that it's already been a whole year since I began moderating. I must admit that it's been a most-exhilarating and interesting year. I've learned many things from our discussions this year and together we've worked to make the Culture Section better than it was last year, and God-willing, next year will be even better.

Andso, I'd like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a wonderful and safe Christmas and [to those who don't celebrate Christmas] a happy holiday season along with a successful new year.

As far as I know, we really don't have a name for it. We just call it: Anyim Calabar (Calabar River). However, some call it by its Ibibio name: Akwa Inyang Ibom (The Great River).

Lol. Nsogbu adii.

Anyway, I have another question for everyone: how do you say "did you do it on purpose" in Central Igbo?

Is it "I ke-eke mee ya" or "I ma-uma mee ya"?

Antivirus92: ur first paragraph, is it for mocking or for compliment? Anyway that's what i am if you have ever seen me in real life. I like ur law of inertia, africa would have remained in the bush if not for the whites.
Na joke I dey joke.

By saying: "Africa would've remained in the bush if not for the whites" you're making it seem as if they are our saviors or our gods.

Antivirus, fine bobo. grin grin

Anyway, I think "develop" is a relative term. Anyway, like Isaac Newton said, a force at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by an outside force. Therefore, my guess is that, in the areas void of outside influence, things would've remained the same.

I asked a relative and he explained to me as follows:

Aro (Arochukwu) traditionally marks the beginning of a new year in the month of September, after the Oriri Ji Ovuru (eating of the new yam). Following this, the Ichu Avo festival commences and the old year is "chased away" with festivity and merriment accompanied with shouts like: "avo gbara aka laa" (the year should go peacefully). The Nwaekpe masquerade then ends Ikeji (New Yam Festival) and ushers in the new year/planting season.

Since there's still a tie, I guess I'll have to choose *Kails*. She's been very active in this section this year and has opened a number of interesting threads.

It's officially time for the next stage: the actual voting. You guys can start voting now. The contestants are:

CultureRe: Do You Believe In Reincarnation: Discuss by odumchi(mod): 3:15am On Dec 17, 2012
The Igbo believe in reincarnation (ilo uwa). It is a significant part of our culture because it coincides with our belief that, through Ali (the earth), all things are naturally recycled and reincorporated into the cosmic order.

The way people tell whether or not someone is a reincarnation of an ancestor is through their behavior (akparamagwa). I, myself, am believed to be the reincarnation of my grandfather (who died before I was born) because, a an infant, I knew how to navigate myself in his house: I even found several of his items that others had been unable to find for years.

CultureRe: Igbo learning thread + Translator by odumchi(mod): 11:00pm On Dec 16, 2012
The language that I use when saying numbers varies depending on the situation.

When it's a number below one hundred, I say it in Igbo. But when the number is in the hundreds/thousands I say it in English in order to save time and to avoid any confusion. However, there are times when I'm forced to say large numbers in Igbo (like when I am speaking with people who don't speak English).

Oh, and by the way, nice progress.
