CAMEROONPRIDE: MOD FRONT PAGE PLEASEHow would I have seen this front page request If I didn't click on this thread? We have a system set up to take care of this but no one seems to be taking advantage of it, so I think it needs to be enforced. Please repost your front page request on this thread if you want it to be officially considered. I apologize for any inconveniences. https://www.nairaland.com/1004554/promoting-culture-board-frontpage |
So far Ifyalways is the only person that has been nominated. More nominations people, let's make this thing interesting! |
I asked myself this question recently. The other day, I attended a mass service in a small suburb in the United States and as I took a look at the mass program, I saw, clearly written, Fr. C. Anyanwu. For some reason, I chuckled to myself. Anyway, I think the reason why we Igbo are so widespread is because our culture(s) place(s) a high value on personal achievement and self-worth. Therefore, we all try our best to succeed and "make it" even if it means traveling thousands of miles from our hometowns in search of opportunities that would be otherwise unavailable to us. |

Abagworo and Antivirus, don't you think the "Oye Eboe" mentioned in that paragraph is actually referring to "Oyibo"? But then again, the Aro were called "Bekee mbu", but at the same time, they came from the east [of Oluada's region] and not the south west. mbatuku2: I think it's related. Anyway, I hope it's discussed at another time.I'm not saying that you shouldn't discuss it. I just didn't see how Ngwa being considered Igbo or not relates to this particular discussion. If you think that it does, then you are more than welcomed to seize the opportunity. |
mbatuku2: I've always said on this subject, there are obviously the original igbo people who called themselves igbo from time immemorial. Go to their towns, you find the term 'igbo' fully reflected in the names. This is an entirely different discussion. |

Antivirus92: we all know that ur stay in nairaland is a very controversial one. You don't agree to what people say and nobody agrees to what you say either. So we are not suprise.I don't know why but I find the conflict between you and Chinenye extremely hilarious. You guys are like fire and water. ![]() |
The word Chukwu didn't originate from Aro. It's just that Aro exploits popularized it throughout ali Igbo because the portal to God's face (Ibini Ukpabi) is located in Aro. The term Chukwu Abiama (short for Chukwu a bia mara nke wu eziokwu) was also popularized by the Aro. |
Afam, you'll need to be fairly popular not only in your ward but in all the communities that constitute your LGA. In addition to this, you will need to have a good reputation supplemented with an open and generous hand. I would suggest you organize yourself and plan out how you intend to rise up gradually. |

ifyalways: A lot going on in nld now. It might make more sense if we shift this to next year.I think that's the best option; this is the time of year when people are very busy. However, I will leave this thread open for more suggestions as we work our way towards it. If all things go right, I look forward to having this early next year. |
Ogas and Madams, I, as your humble moderator, would like to formally announce that it is once again time for us to nominate the the "Culture Section Poster of the Year". Any nominee that has been banned or warned this year will be disqualified. 3. A moderator cannot be nominated in his/her section but may be nominated in other sections. 4. Nominee must be active in the section. 5. Nominee must be forum rule-abiding and not a trouble-maker (passionate defence of one's opinions is not considered trouble-making). 6. Top 3 nominees will be up for poll for another 2 weeks; the winner will be announced at the expiration of the voting. 7. In the event of a tie, the mod reserves the right to either choose one or extend the nomination/voting by 24 hours. Antivirus92: but i have read and heard about the first igbo group that the europeans met on their arrival in igboland. They told the whites that they speak igbo language. Btw odumchi, what do u think the answer to ur question should be? Are you insunuating that the europeans founded the word "igbo"?I'll answer your question with this: "Igbo" was never the name of any group of people. "Igbo" was in actuality the categorical name given to the collection of very similar languages spoken by the different peoples who occupy the stretch of land west of the Edo, east of the Ibibio, south of the Igala and Idoma, and north of the Ijo peoples. What people sometimes fail to understand is that the original understanding of the word "Igbo" differs from that which we have today. Like I've stated many times already, it was a language cluster. For this reason, if you were to journey to Onicha (or any other town, for that matter) in the year 1700 and ask a native what people he was from, he would tell you "Onicha" and not "Igbo" because the term "Igbo" only applied when discussing its members as a whole. If you were to ask him the origin of his town [Onicha], he would say "Ezechima" and point westward. If you were to ask him who his people's neighbors were, he would just describe them indescriminately by saying "Fa bu ndi Igbo" (meaning: they are Igbo-speaking peoples). But about his own people, he would say "Mana anyi aburo Igbo, anyi bu Onicha" (meaning: However, we are not a random bunch of Igbo-speaking peoples, we are Onicha). If you were to ask him what language he spoke, he would most-likely say "Anyi na-asu okwu Onicha" (meaning: we speak the language of the Onicha people). Like, Abagworo pointed out, this phenomenon is also found among other groups. If you had asked that question in Aro, the reply would've been "okwu Aro"; in Ngwa "Ngwa"; in Owere, Ngor Okpala, and their vicinities, "Urata". That is why the true meaning of the phrase "Abu m onye Igbo" is "I am a member of one of the Igbo-speaking peoples who occupy th territory west of the Edo, east of the Ibibio, south of the Igala and Idoma, and north of the Ijo". In today's world, the definition of "Igbo" has somewhat changed. Due to the forces of natural evolution and change (that is, if the forceful and abrupt intervention of the Europeans can actually be considered 'natural'), the Igbo have gone from being a categorization of similar and related peoples who speak similar languages to being an ethnic group, equipped with a standard language, on its way to nationhood. Antivirus92: Are you insunuating that the europeans founded the word "igbo"?I did not in any way imply this. In fact, I believe the exact opposite: the term "Igbo" has always been in existence and in use. However, the understanding of it that we have today was prompted by the Europeans. kwangi: Dude, get real abeg!I saala nu m ajuju m juru? |

ezeagu: It's supposed to be ndia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Society_for_Promoting_Igbo_Language_and_CultureO di kwa njo o. If they are truly the group of people who are responsible for the welfare of the Igbo language, then nsogbu di. Somewhere, I also read something about Oxford University being the prominent authority on Igbo literature and linguistics. However, I do agree that we (those with the power to do so) need to urgently revive organizations like these. It would be nice if there were organizations that would published annual dictionaries complete with new words and etc. |

In Arochukwu, the two most prominent deities are Kamalu (deity of strength) and Chukwu Abiama (supreme deity). Aside from these two, there are numerous minor deities that are either inyamavia (deities that are said to provide good business fortune) or personal deities (which typically exist in family compounds as masks, gongs, trees, and etc). In the olden days, upon returning from a long journey, a man would make a small sacrifice [usually of animal's blood] to his personal arunsi along with a pouring of libations in order to thank his ancestors and that particular deity for safely guiding him home. |

King George III is the great great great grand nephew of Ghengis Khan; Nigeria was an Italian colony; Shaka Zulu was actually an Arab sailor who was shipwrecked off of Africa; and Barrack Obama is actually Obasanjo in disguise. |
