PoliticsRe: The Story That Didn't Hug The Headlines By Femi Adesina by odurombi: 8:07pm On Mar 13, 2022
presidency:
A story broke last week that you would think would be everywhere, topic of discussion on both traditional and new media. But not a murmur, nor a whisper. In fact, mum was the word in many quarters.

What was the story? The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), an international and independent, not-for-profit think-tank, released what it calls Global Terrorism Index 2022. And it had this to say about Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA):

“There was a ten per cent improvement in terrorism deaths in SSA. The improvement can be attributed to the successful counter insurgency operations targeting Boko Haram where deaths caused by the group declined by 72 per cent between 2020 and 2021, from 629 deaths to 178 deaths. Nigeria recorded the second biggest reduction in deaths. This is more than the overall decrease in terrorism deaths in Sub-Saharan Africa. Attacks by the group also significantly decreased, halving from the prior year to 64 attacks.”

The truth is that a single wanton death is one too many anywhere. But when in a country that had suffered thousands of deaths yearly since Boko Haram emerged in 2009, killings now reduced by 72 per cent, it is a very significant development. It is something that should hug the headlines, dominate the talk shows, go viral on social media, and be of interest to social commentators. But not a murmur, nor a whisper, as I said earlier. As if in a conspiracy of silence, nobody talked about the report. The media didn’t report it, and those that did, superciliously tucked it away in a place where you would need to put on the torchlight before you would see it.

Now, just imagine that the same report had indicated that there was a spike in Boko Haram killings in Nigeria, with the carnage exceeding that of the previous year by 100 per cent. All hell would have broken loose. It would be lead headline in most publications. Some television stations would scroll the story in their news bar round the clock, for many days. It would be the topic of discussion on morning and evening discussion programs. We would be almost deafened by the cacophony. So-called security experts and social activists would be invited, and they would be pontificating all day.

Why do we as a people show more interest in negative, rather than positive news? Bandits killed scores of vigilantes in Kebbi this week, and the news was everywhere. But last week, security agencies had neutralized minimum of 200 bandits in Niger State, and it was nothing to play up. It did not resonate in the media, traditional or new. Not a murmur, nor a whisper. Strange. Very strange.

President Muhammadu Buhari came our way in 2015, promising to secure the country, revive the economy, and fight corruption. Rather than encourage him, what some people had been engaged in is sticking a pin into the soft underbelly of the various wars. No plaudits. No bravo. No encouragement. He didn’t do this, he didn’t do that, is all they are interested in. The economy recorded 3.4% growth last year, the best since 2014, no murmur, no whisper. The anti-corruption war has seen convictions in thousands between 2015 and now, yet, what interests some people is how the war is allegedly selective, even without a scintilla of evidence. And when there are strides in the battle against insecurity, their narrative remains the same. Oh, life is nasty, brutish and short here.

Yes, we still have severe security challenges. But are we where we used to be? Don’t we see a fulfillment of promises by President Buhari that he would ensure that the vermin of insecurity is extirpated in the country? The pessimists have not changed their tongues, nor their minds, despite the positive strides being attained. The report by IEP says Nigeria recorded the lowest number of killings last year, since 2011. No murmur, no whisper.

We should rather applaud the President, and our security agencies for the yeoman’s job they are doing. May God bless Baba Buhari. And our troops. Our policemen. National Security and Civil Defence Corps. Everyone that fights evil, so that the citizens can live in peace. May God bless them.

When you exhibit loud silence about positive developments in your country, and scream blue murder when there are reversals, you are a hypocrite, a hater of your country, and a hater of all that is good. Sad, dolorous, mournful.

Despite the security challenges we still have, the truth is that we are not where we used to be. Chief of Defence Staff, General LEO Irabor said it just last week. True. And we will get to where we want to be. The job will get done. And we will join Mungo Park to enthuse, when he ‘discovered’ the River Niger:

“I saw with infinite pleasure the great object of my mission-the long sought for majestic Niger, glittering to the morning sun.”

Nigeria has sought peace for long, from insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and all sorts of criminality. We will see the peace, glittering to the morning sun.

It's such a very daunting task to be spokesperson to an administration that has decided to 'go slow'. An excerpt from a lecture delivered by Distinguished Professor Toyin Falola says it all.

"When they say “Great!” it is no more than a simple case of pride, the type that has a child insisting its mother’s gruel is superior. The students are fully conscious of its misplacement, just like I routinely defend Nigeria in the worst circumstances, my expression of misplaced pride."

This very disturbing news of what happened at Dowen College is one of the direct results of adopting a western approach to discipline in many private schools in the country.

I mean, the principal assures the students that they cannot be canned. And the students become so nonchalant and rude to their teachers.

Am I in any way saying that kids should be beaten at will, upon every misgiving? Of course, no!

But when students bask in knowing that they can't be punished for their misdeeds, the teachers can do no better. In fact, it becomes more problematic when the teachers aren't too well paid and they have to curry the favour of parents. The consequence is that they overindulge the students just to please their parents.

No surprises if LM wins the award. By all standard/performance, 1998 was Jay Jay's year but it was Hadji Mustapha of Morocco that won the African Player of the Year Award. 2010 was Wesley Schneider's year, with spectacular appearances for Holland at the world cup and Inter Milan but he lost out on the award. Not even sure he made the top three. Thierry Henry's spectacular performances for Arsenal weren't good enough to win the award at least once. So, what's the point if the well-deserved player loses out tonight.

PoliticsRe: The Military Ranks Of Past Heads Of State In Nigeria Before They Assumed Power by odurombi: 1:46am On Nov 05, 2021
Businesslist:
There were not many military leaders who were Generals in the Army before they became heads of states in Nigeria. Some were Colonels, Brigadier Generals, and only a sparse number were Major- Generals.

Before going any further, it is necessary to be acquainted with senior ranks in the Nigerian army. Starting from the lowest, they are: 2nd Lieutenant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Brigadier General, Major General, Lieutenant General, and General.

During the Military regime in Nigeria, there were a total number of eight heads of state. They include: Aguiyi Ironsi, Yakubu Gowon, Murtala Mohammed, Olusegun Obasanjo, Muhammadu Buhari, Ibrahim Babangida, Sani Abacha and Abubakar Abdusalam.

Listed below are the past Heads of states in Nigeria and their military ranks:

1. Major General Johnson Aguiyi Ironsi:

Johnson Aguiyi Ironsi joined the Nigerian regiment in 1842 as a private with the seventh battalion. In 1965, he rose to the rank of a Major General.

He became the military head of state in January 1966 and was killed during a coup in July that same year.

2. Lieutenant Colonel Yakubu Gowon:

Yakubu Gowon was commissioned as a second Lieutenant in the Army on the 19th October 1955, his 21st birthday. He became a Lieutenant Colonel in 1966 before he became the head of state. However, by virtue of his political post, he was promoted later to the rank of General.

3. Brigadier General Murtala Mohammed:

Murtala Mohammed was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in October 1971. He was a part of the coup that brought in Yakubu Gowon, and although he wanted to occupy the post at that time, he was a junior.

He became the head of state in 1975, until his assassination in 1976.

4. Major General Olusegun Obasanjo:

Olusegun Obasanjo enlisted in the Nigerian Army in March 1958 due to his family's inability to send him to the university. He served as head of state in Nigeria from 1976 to 1979 before relinquishing power to civilian government.

5. Major General Muhammadu Buhari:

In 1963, at age 20 he was commissioned a second lieutenant and appointed platoon commander of the second infantry battalion. He later became head of state in 1983.

6. Major General Ibrahim Babangida:

During the regime of Muhammadu Buhari, Babangida became a Major General in the army. He later became head of state in 1985 until his resignation in 1993.

7. General Sani Abacha:

Sani Abacha served as military head of state from 1993 until his death in 1998. According to Wikipedia, in 1993, he became the first Nigerian Army officer to attain the rank of a full military General without skipping a single rank.

8. General Abdusalaami Abubakar:

He was initially in the Nigerian Air force before joining the Nigerian Army. He became head of state a day after the death of Sani Abacha in 1998.

Source; https://123.com.ng/heads-of-state-in-nigeria/
That information about Obasanjo joining the army because his family couldn't afford to send him to the university isn't consistent with the information in Obasanjo's biography My Watch. Before he joined the army, he had a scholarship offer to study abroad. He was also awaiting the result of the entrance examination into University of Ibadan and he had the option of studying at Fourah Bay College, Sierra Leone before his path crossed with destiny when he stumbled on a newspaper advert for enlistment into the army.

Imagine! The horror of discrimination.
Sad tale of two young bloods who should have enjoyed the better part of their lives together, when they were still young and bouncing, but their sweet bond of love was severed by the color of their skins.
What benefit are they to one another, now that their lives are almost expired?
Although son of men say, half cake is better than non. But some half cake can make you shed tears, when you know what the full cake could have looked like. Can we even call this half cake or one quarter cake?
When I scrolled up again to compare the pictures, when they were both young, fresh and looking all smart to now when they're aged, it's such a sad sight, I must say.

Back then, no sane white parents would approve their white daughter dating a Negro. No!
Funny enough this black guy is redbone, not black as such, could be mistaken for white. Yet back then, Black is Black; as long as you're not White, you're Black.

Peak of discrimination and racism.
Black race has come a long way. Gone through a lot of shiit to be where it is today.
Days when you'll have to wait and bow for White to pass on the road before you pass. Days when as a Black, you can't enter the same Bar with Whites.

When I remember the sacrifices of people like Martin Luther Jr., Malcom X, Vivien Thomas, Carl Brashear etc. how they used their lives as ransom for Black freedom, I shake my head for what Blacks are today.

Shame on Blacks. You see these Black Americans with no sense or any memory left, of where they've come from in history.

All they do is lazy around, steal, loot shops, go to gym, eat, smoke, sag, put tattoo on their bodies, wear big chains, rings and oversize cloths; flaunt dollar and expensive possessions, showoff, intimidate others, play all day, speak wrong English, go to party, do gangsterism, listen to hip hop music and above it all sex, sex and sex. No Iota of sense. Black will always be black, whether African or Black American.
Reading:

"When I remember the sacrifices of people like Martin Luther Jr., Malcom X, Vivien Thomas, Carl Brashear etc. how they used their lives as ransom for Black freedom, I shake my head for what Blacks are today" made me remember film productions on these great heroes. I remember in particular the reason for the name Vivien, as mentioned in the movie Something the Lord Made. His mom was so sure that the baby she was pregnant with was a girl that she retained the name 'Vivien' for her. But lo, it was a boy. She nevertheless named the baby boy Vivien. And for Master Chief Carl Barshear, I don't think the account can be told better than it was told in the movie, Men of Honour'. Can't stop watching the movie - the resoluteness of black man to weather the storm against systemic racial segregation.

BusinessHow I Lost Out Investing In Zoom -peter Obi by odurombi(op): 8:26pm On Jul 26, 2020
Ex-Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has revealed how he lost out on an opportunity to invest in the popular teleconferencing and online chat services app, Zoom.

He said this at a webinar which held on Saturday.
Obi said the investment was less than 30 cents, an opportunity he should have seized with both hands.

He said, “I was telling someone a few days ago how in 2015 I met people where I have gone to do a program in the US and they came out and told me about the Zoom business that just started. As of that time, it would cost you less than 30 cents to invest in Zoom if I wanted to do so.

“This is because they were telling me about a business proposal and I said this will never happen where we would be in our houses and be doing meetings- it would take some time. Here I am now, being in the house for four months only to do meetings through the same thing.”

The vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2019 election said lack of support of business in Nigeria was killing several dreams and was part of reasons the idea wasn’t worth considering at the time.

He said, “Eventually one of them came to me and said they have been able to get funding from the government and from the bank. I said they were lucky, in my country nobody would give you any funding for such an idea. You have to bring properties from your mother and father in order to be able to get funding for such. This story you are telling me, I cannot put money behind it talkless of me lending you money as a banker.

Obi said Nigeria was still sunk in the past and it needs to wake up to the realities of time or else, it would be left behind.

He said, “When we talk of the new normal, we have to look at the environments. Look at what is happening all over the world, Countries are having closed-door meetings on rejigging the economies but what are we doing here? We are doing the opposite. We are talking about all the ways of the past. All these new opportunities must be taken differently with new thinking.

“Today’s jobs are global. You can be in Nigeria and work for a firm in London, Doctors do examinations on zoom, making them global workers who must do things differently. Politicians have to do things differently to have a better country,” he added.

PoliticsOndo State Governor Tests Positive For COVID-19 by odurombi(op): 3:20pm On Jun 30, 2020
BREAKING: Akeredolu tests positive for COVID-19
PublishedJune 30, 2020

Sodiq Oyeleke

Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has tested positive for coronavirus.

Akeredolu confirmed his status via his Twitter handle on Tuesday.

He tweeted, “Today, I tested positive for #COVID19. All is well. I’m asymptomatic and have been self-isolating. Work continues. Your continued prayers over my well being are most appreciated.”

In a video attached to the tweet, Akeredolu said he took the COVID-19 test after being treated for malaria.

The governor explained that he was advised to take the COVID-19 test by a governor at the All Progressives Congress National Executive Council meeting held on Thursday in Abuja.

He said, “My good people of Ondo State. It gives me great pleasure to address you at this moment. I had malaria two days ago and was treated. I did get over it.

“At the APC NEC meeting, one of my colleagues spoke with me. He advised that malaria should not be just treated as likely. That I should go ahead and have a test for COVID-19.

“The result came out today, June 30, 2020, and I tested positive. But I am asymptomatic. I am not feeling sick nor feeling odd in any way.

“But my doctor has said that I should take the necessary steps and self-isolate. I believe that supervised home management would be ideal for me for now.”

Details later…
