This question is a little bit complicated. Highway driving may be good for the cooling system but it causes more wear to your transmission, engine and other parts since you will cover more miles per time compared to just driving within the city.
I believe a car used for consistent highway driving will be more prone to developing faults.

Well my office colleague thinks like u too n dts y he told me he won't b travelling to d village for d new year with his car for fear of d car developing faults bc he is nt ready for car wahala as he is on a tight budget. He only needs to travel for abt 350km max wit his car but he has used it on city for over six months without faults

Where is a car more prone to developing faults on highway or city driving other things beings equal ie u ve carried out all schedule maintainance and repairs to d best of ur knowledge.

Ok let me give a practical example:
If one has used a certain car everyday for three months in city covering abt 1200km without any fault does dt at least assure one dt d same car can be used for a highway one time drive of abt 400km without d car developing any fault.

I personally think a car is most prone to fault in city driving bc it is most stressed with multiple stop n go traffic n d likes. I believe such car as in d senerio above shld do d highway driving of 400km effortlessly. Wat do u guys think

The best way to know when it's tiem to change yoru oil is from previous lab results that tested yoru old oil.

Not many people do this so the next best method is go on your own interval based on a combination of issues such as owners manual and your running condition.

I hardly ever follow my owner manual. Teh owners manual is written not by engineers (they did give an input) but the accountants also have a say in it.

So the owners manual range is for average people driving in average conditions, it includes your lead footed uncle bill and also your slow a$$ grannie Mildred who only takes her car out on Sundays to go to church and bingo. They have to have a balance somewhere since both types of drivers needs to change their oil.

Of this I know, changing your oil at one month and/or 3,000 miles is a waste o f money and resources.

In my example, even if the manual says 10,000 miles interval, Uncle Bill with his jack rabbit starts and always taking the car to red line before changing gears is best advised to change his oil sooner than the 10,000. Grannie Mildred can have a geriatric lapse of forgetfulness and delay her oil change to 12,000 miles.

oil is cheap, car engine is not!.
changing oil by color is bull cra,p........ in any normal engine after abt 500miles, the oil will turn dark.
if using dino oil ie mobil xhp, visco 2000 /any oil below 3500 naira/4liter. usually 20w 50 .i advice you to change every 3000miles/2months wchever comes first. one thing u shud realize abt mineral/dino oil is that once you have poured it inside the car and driven the car...it will undergo irreversible chemical reaction, and the lifespan clock will start counting....even if u want drive it only 100km and travel for 3months...by the time you come back, even if the oil is still light in color, it has exired, and shud be drained

on the other hand if using synthetic oil eg mobil 1, total quartz 9000 usually 0w 30, 10w 40 oils...u can do 6000miles or 6months wchever comes first, some have done 9months with mobil1 with zero issues...as far as the mileage is below 6k, you shud be fine, unlike mineral oil, u can use and travel for 3 months and come back n continue using it...no wahala

when they say 10000km it doesnt mean that the oil will remain on the same level till the next service NOPE here and there you top up based mileage you do roughly per month eg every two trip to london from glasgow 412miles aka 663kms i check my oil level if the oil is low i top up. it doesnt mean that the oil that was out at last service will remain on the same level with more mileage you do the more you check oil level

if your suggestion is based on the type of oil aka a specific cheap brand then why go for cheap brand that drains your pocket every 6 months go for the recommended one that will take you to next recommended mileage or time though in between you top based on how offen you use the car

by the way am not in nigeria am based in UK my standards are UK based so are the parts we buy and even the cheapest STANDARD oil in UK will take you to the next service interval

i know that the environment in nigeria has fake things, when i give advise, mine is based on what the manufacture recommens and standart qaulity parts and oil within UK but it doesnt mean people in nigeria cut do the same thing

Well this is nairaland and nt uk land wat obtains in Nigeria shld b d focus. No engine oil in nigeria will take you 10,000km given our operating environment unless u wanna send ur engine to its untimely death. Wat u read in manuals r conditional statements and may nt obtain for cars operated in extremely dusty environment n cars 15yrs n older. Nigeria is different from UK. We find it difficult to even get d correct oil with d right viscosity ie manufacturer may recommend 10w30 n we can only find n use 20w50.

Most Toyota user manuals (2010 Prado, 2010 Corolla, 2009 Camry, 2008 & 2010 Hiace and 2008 & 2011 Hilux) İ have seen recommends that you do servicing (oil & filter change)every 6 months or 10,000km of driving, which ever comes first. İ don't know of the 1998 Carina E, but since they are all Toyota, İ think it should follow. #JustMyThoughtsAnyway.

It all depends on d type of engine oil one is using. I use total quartz 5000 dt means I can't exceed 5000km on it. I think there is total quartz 9000 which can b used for up to 9000km. My main concern with this thread is for ppl who use their car only for city driving and travell sparingly wit it. For this group of ppl they may nt even use up to 2000km on an oil in 3months, so I guess they can continue using same oil for 6months n cover lik 4000km before an oil change. Although 3000km ll b ok for me to b on d safer side
