We need experienced players in that young squad. Joe Cole has it and he style of play fits into Arsenal's. To me, i think is a good buy. |
Joe Cole Has Signed A Contract To Join Arsenal After World Cup 2010 * Deal agreed in principal before player flew out to the World Cup * England midfielder's move will be completed if he passes full medical * Three-year, £80,000-a-week contract laden with incentives England midfielder Joe Cole has signed a contract to join Arsenal, Goal.com UK can reveal. The midfielder put pen to paper on an £80,000-a-week, three-year deal before flying out to South Africa with England’s World Cup squad. The sensational free transfer has been kept under wraps by both parties because the agreement is dependent on Cole being able to prove his fitness when he returns from the World Cup. Goal.com UK understands that Cole was put through his paces in a basic medical on Monday of last week, which was enough to convince manager Arsene Wenger to tie him to a deal that wards off other clubs. But, in order to insure themselves from the England midfielder suffering a serious injury on World Cup duty, Arsenal insisted on inserting a clause that means Cole must pass a more stringent, full medical when he returns from South Africa for the deal to be officially completed. The move has ended Tottenham, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool's hopes of signing one of the most coveted free agents on the market this summer. Despite mixed messages from Harry Redknapp over the past week about making a move for Cole, it is understood that the player had talks with Spurs but did not receive an offer. Wenger is a huge admirer of Cole’s technical skills and ability to play in any of the three advanced midfield positions in his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation. The Arsenal manager's only concerns were Cole's wage demands and long-term fitness. The 28-year-old missed most of 2009 with knee ligament damage and has not completed a full competitive 90 minutes since February. "I like Joe Cole - whenever he played against us he did a lot of damage" Although Cole will join second-tier earners Robin van Persie, Andrey Arshavin and William Gallas - in the unlikely event the Frenchman stays - as one of the best-paid players at Emirates Stadium, he will still be a long way short of captain Cesc Fabregas, who is on £110,000-a-week. Arsenal made it clear in contract talks with Cole’s camp last week that they were unwilling to shatter their salary structure for a player with a checkered recent fitness record. But the deal will include performance-related bonuses triggered by getting in the top four, winning the Premier League or the Champions League. Ironically, part of the reason Chelsea let the midfielder go was because they would not bow to Cole’s demands for a 50 percent hike on the £80,000-a-week he was earning at Stamford Bridge. The Premier League champions made one offer midway through the season which was rejected, and there has been no further offer made. Cole's signing is viewed by Arsenal in a similar way to the deal that brought Sol Campbell from Tottenham in 2001. The club are willing to sanction such high-level wages because the deal does not involve a transfer fee and there is hope that Cole’s vast international experience and seven years spent with serial winners Chelsea will rub off on a dressing room that has not won a trophy in five years. It is also a populist move because it increases the English contingent in a squad that has only one home-grown regular first-teamer in Theo Walcott. |
But i wonder what our moderator is doing anyway. Is it only vulgar words that you guys correct here? I think you also have the responsibility NOT to publish any abusive posts. |
@Lovemoneyn Please, we should respect each other. Using abusive words is most unfortunate irrespective of anybody's stand or opinion on an issue. |

Marriage To 13-Year Old: Islamic Group Plans One-Million-Man March For Yerima The group contended that Yerima’s marriage was strictly a private affair and that he should be left alone and warned the Senate to disband the panel it set up to probe the former governor over the issue. Director of the group, Alhaji Is-haq Akintola, who spoke in Lagos, Nigeria, yesterday, told newsmen that Yerima’s marriage was conducted in total conformity with the teachings of Islam. “The current stand of these groups is regarded by Nigerian muslims not as an attack on Yerima per se but as a vicious campaign against Islam and Nigerian Muslims. “We reject the Child Rights Act as it breaches the teachings of Islam and deprives Muslims of their Allah-given and fundamental rights. We demand the dissolution of the panels set up by both the Senate and the House of Representatives to probe Yerima’s marriage as this constitutes an attempt to probe the scripture of Islam,” he stated. Akintola absolved the senator of any blame in the marriage, adding that the group had also concluded plans to stage a peaceful protest in the premises of the National Assembly. According to him, “the National Assembly’s action stands in contra-distinction of article 18 of the United Nations Charter signed into law on December 10, 1948 which also affirms this indubitable freedom to practice one’s religion. It is also contravenes Article 9 and 14 of the European Treaty of Human Right as well Article 18 and 19 of the treaty of civil and political Rights. “What is most clear in this marriage hullabaloo is that none of the critics have made any attempt to find out the position of Islam regarding marriage .It is highly regrettable that the National Assembly has also failed in this direction. We are alarmed that the men and women who occupy our parliament have little or no respect for the religion of Islam and its teachings. They now occupy themselves with investigating the Shariah and probing Islam. “MURIC wishes to assert clearly, unambiguously and unequivocally that the National Assembly has no locus standi to investigate an Islamic marriage which conforms in its totality with teachings of Islam.” He added that “if some people with evil intention can march to the National Assembly demanding the prosecution of Yerima for conducting an Islamic marriage, Muslims also have the right to respond in like manner and in defence of their hero and liberator, the Yerima of Bakura. “The continued persecution of Yerima constitutes a potent threat to peace in this country. Yerima is undeniably, a hero among Muslims having used the instrumentality of the Shariah to liberate Nigerian Muslims and this is why he is being persecuted. “We stand by Yerima in this trying period; Nigerian Muslims should remain vigilant but resist all provocations and maintain the peace, law and order. We remain committed to dialogue and non-violence and the detractors should leave Yerima alone.” |
…Abedi Pele optimistic African team will play in the final on July 11 By GBOLAHAN DADA With Pele's prediction that an African team would win the FIFA World Cup by the end of the last century having proved wide off the mark, Africans are desperate for the continent's first finals to witness a meaningful achievement. Many see a semi-final place for one of the African contenders at South Africa 2010 as an absolute must, especially with the backing of a football-mad people that are sure to support their home side first and any other African nation as second option. Considering that Cameroon at Italy 1990 and Senegal at Korea/Japan 2002 are the only African sides to reach the quarterfinals of the world's showpiece football event and that no FIFA World Cup has ever had more than one African side in the knockout rounds, it seems a tall order. And while there is no doubt that the continent has continued to produce some of the world's best players, the inconsistency of its national teams has left many scratching their heads. However, typical of Africa, optimism somehow triumphs in the face of any odds, and many legendary figures, past and present, have gone on the record predicting success. For current players, the idea of lifting the spirits of the continent's people to the level of ecstasy is the ultimate. “My teammates and I want to make history and want to change the way the world sees African football. I hope that we'll be the team that is going to go to the Final and win the competition,” said injury-worry Didier Drogba, who may miss the tournament with a broken arm, but who captains what many consider to be the most talent-laden side on the continent. Ghanaian legend, Abedi Pele, has also been in bullish form, hinting that there is a good chance for ultimate glory in the Final on 11 July. He is, however, also careful to insist that, at such a difficult event, in which the draw was not particularly kind to the African hopefuls, performance may matter more ultimately than advancement. “It's going to be a very tough tournament for the African teams,” Pele, who has two sons, Andre and Rahim Ayew, on the current Ghana team, admitted to FIFA.com. “They have tough groups and it's not going to be easy for them to get out. There is a theory that says this is the best time for an African team to win the tournament, maybe that is true. We will have to wait and see, but whatever happens, I think our teams will do us proud.” Pele no doubt has in his mind the success of his home country at the end of last year in the FIFA Under-20 World Cup, when Ghana broke through to become the first African winner of the competition. Many of those impressive youngsters have worked their way into the Black Stars side and shone at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year in Angola. Another team on the up is South Africa, which has not lost in 12 matches, and is hitting peak form at just the right time under veteran boss, Carlos Alberto Parreira. And the host of the FIFA World Cup typically gets a huge boost from its home crowd, which will surely be the case for Bafana Bafana. South African great, Lucas Radebe sees potential for the host to reach the semi-finals, but he also stressed that how far the African teams advance is not the ultimate measure of success. “This World Cup is not only about football, it's about Africa reinventing itself," said the former Leeds defender. “Of course, we want success on the field, but at the same time, we would like to see this event as a success off the field. We want the world to trust Africa. |
Police to arraign Deji of Akure for assault, conspiracy Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ogbona Onovo, said on Wednesday that the Deji of Akure, Oba Oluwadare Adeshina, would soon be arraigned in court for assault and breach of the peace. Onovo appeared before the Senate Committee on Police Affairs to explain the status of the police investigation on the action of the Deji, which resulted in the injury of his estranged wife, Olori Bolanle. He said, “Considering the fact that no one is above the law and considering the weighty evidence against the suspects, I have directed that they should be charged to court accordingly for the offence of assault, conspiracy and act capable of causing the breach of the peace.” He noted that police findings showed that the Deji had left his palace in company with some of his chiefs and his wife, Olori Remi Adeshina, and went to the residence of Bolanle, the complainant. He said Remi allegedly participated in the assault, having assaulted Bolanle by hitting her head with a plank. According to Onovo, the police recorded that the white substance, which doctors confirmed as chemical, was poured on Bolanle by the Deji himself after receiving it from one of his chiefs. He noted that in the course of the investigation, the police interviewed three witnesses and their evidence laid credence to the allegations of the victim of the assault. Onovo said the suspect did not deny the allegations, but said he went to the residence of the estranged wife to perform some rituals. He said, “In his own statement, the suspect, Oba Oluwadare Adeshina, the Deji of Akure, confirmed that he actually left his palace on the said day in company with some of his chiefs and the second suspect, his wife, Olori Remi, and went to the residence of the complainant to perform some traditional rites. “He further confirmed that he went there with ashes and a live fowl for the purported rite.” Quoting the medical report obtained from the hospital where Bolanle is being treated, he said it showed that there were “pains and wounds on her upper limbs following assault by her husband. The report gave provisional diagnosis as chemical burns and assault.” Senator Heineken Lokpobiri said that the Deji should be confined by the police so that he would not be able to unleash any attack on witnesses in the case. Senator Anie Okonkwo, in his contribution, noted that if the monarch could do what he did, he could even do a worse thing. He urged the police to take a speedy action against him. The Country Vice President, International Federation of Women Lawyers, Mrs. Ezenwa Okoroafor, in her petition to the Senate, said the Deji had not denied the allegations against him, noting that he had in fact, admitted his actions and sought to justify it. Meanwhile, desperate efforts to save the embattled monarch from being dethroned began on Wednesday. Also, a fake letter allegedly written by Bolanle to the state governor was circulated among journalists by some people believed to be friends of the monarch on Wednesday. The letter entitled: “Re: Deji of Akure, HRM Oba Adepoju Adeshina and his Olori Omobolanle Adesina,” was allegedly signed by the estranged wife herself and addressed to the governor. It was dated June 8, 2010. It reads in part, “Having reflected on the chains of events since May 30, 2010 between my husband, His Royal Majesty, Oba Oluwadare Adeshina, I have come to the conclusion that the most reasonable thing to do is to bury the hatchet in the spirit of reconciliation, which is in the best interest of all concerned. “Since my marriage to Kabiyesi even before his ascension to the throne of his fathers, I have done all in my capacity to cherish him and promote our collective well-being and those of our precious two sons, princes of Akureland. “As a husband, he has been a father and companion. As a king, he rules with humility and fear of God and fearlessly, even in the face of possible political persecution, defends what is just and noble.” But in a telephone interview with our correspondent, both the Olori and her lawyer, Mr. Olatunbosun Aganun, described the letter as a forged document. Bolanle, who is still recuperating in her hospital bed, said whatever letter that would emanate from her would be written by her lawyers and that she was not thinking of withdrawing her litigation against the monarch. |
