APC is a fraud. And what is buhari, the Mr "integrity" doing in d mist of these wolves? His anticorruption toga is questionable |
Third Republic Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, tells TOBI AWORINDE that former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s endorsement of the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), may not be worth its salt What do you think of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who helped found the Peoples Democratic Party, endorsing the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.)? Unusual and unconventional things keep happening in Nigeria. I don’t know whether the solidarity of the military is so strong that it compels people to do such things. Is there a military caucus made up of a different breed of Nigerians such that an officer must support another officer? I hear that Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (retd.) is also supporting Buhari, to my greatest surprise. The military caucus, perhaps, is the strongest one in the (political) system. An endorsement by Gen. Obasanjo can be a kiss of death for any political figure. I don’t know how much is left of Obasanjo’s credibility to endorse somebody and if it can have a positive effect. But Obasanjo also endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011. Are you saying the President didn’t profit from that vote of confidence? You are right, Obasanjo brought out Jonathan and endorsed him in 2011, even when he (Jonathan) was contesting against Buhari. So, what has changed? Or is there another caucus of the North and northern supporters? What happened to (Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru) Jega is also happening to other northerners. But some Hausa/ Fulani Muslims have taken a decision to return power to themselves—the ‘born-to-rule people’— and everyone seems to be endorsing Buhari for that reason. The ways of Obasanjo are sometimes inscrutable, but I pray that, for him and for all of us, the will of God will happen. Jonathan is a tool in the hands of God, chosen to do God’s purpose for Nigeria. If he has finished that purpose, he will leave. But if he has not finished God’s purpose, he will be there and no man born by a woman can remove him. Is it normal for an elder statesman of such prominence to go against his party’s mandate and endorse a member of the opposition? A former head of state is a human being and has human rights. I don’t think anything is wrong with that. But if you are in a party and you endorse another party’s candidate, it means you are indulging in anti-party activities. In honour, he should therefore resign from the PDP. Are you, therefore, in support of the Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose’s proposition that the party suspend the ex-President over ‘inter-party activities’? Let me tell you something: we don’t have parties. After the presidential elections, we will work to build two parties in Nigeria. The two-party system has been demonstrated to be what Nigeria needs; what works for and integrates Nigeria, crushing religiosity and tribalism. We have one of the parties already surfacing—the Social Democratic Party. We will define the ideology of the SDP properly and the people who want to be on the other side will define their ideology. That way, we would give Nigeria a two-party system. After the presidential elections, even with Jonathan as president, the PDP may have to go. Look at how they cause all kinds of problems for themselves. One is not sure where a member of the PDP is heading. You can see that the President is a member of the PDP. But some people say even the PDP chairman is not with the party. The PDP may eventually leave the scene, even with the President in office. Obasanjo, in endorsing Buhari, claimed Jonathan had allowed corruption to creep into the military and undermine its operations. Do you agree with this point of view? No, he was just looking for something to say. Obasanjo was far more corrupt than Jonathan and he never fought corruption. Instead, he fought his enemies who were corrupt. His friends who were corrupt were never fought. That is not how to fight corruption. While I cannot say that President Jonathan has fought corruption seriously, I know that corruption is just an issue that Obasanjo can use against anybody except himself. A worse form of corruption is to prosecute people you don’t like. Imagine two people commit the same offence; one is your friend and the other your enemy. You take state power to crush your enemy and you think you are fighting corruption. That alone is corrupt. Impunity is part of corruption. The effect of an endorsement is uncertain; whether a blessing or a curse, nobody knows. Obasanjo warned that any manipulation of electoral process by the Presidency could lead to a military coup. Do you suppose the presidency might have had a hand in the postponement of elections?. After Jega was advised by the National Security Adviser and all the security chiefs, there was a National Council of State meeting that raised doubts about readiness for elections. At the state council meeting, Jega was advised to make wider consultations and he did immediately. He then found out clearly that, in addition to the allegations made against him by some southern leaders, in the face of insecurity and other challenges, he could not go on with the elections without people crying foul. People say Obasanjo and others don’t want Jonathan at all because he is from the minority or he is too gentle; because he’s not behaving like Obasanjo, persecuting everybody. It may be true that the military has been planning a coup. But those who are targeting Jonathan can only succeed if God allows it. Whoever is coming to rule us, even if, against my expectations, it turns out to be Buhari, God must approve it. www.punchng.com/politics/crossfire/obasanjos-support-for-buhari-kiss-of-death-ezeife/ |

The Presidency on Saturday said it was aware of a plot by former President Olusegun Obasanjo and some unnamed others within and outside the country to thwart the forthcoming general elections and foist an unconstitutional Interim National Government, which he hopes to head, on the nation. Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, said this in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja. Abati was reacting to an allegation by Obasanjo that President Goodluck Jonathan was planning to plunge the country into crisis if he loses the forthcoming general election. He said the Presidency found Obasanjo’s allegation odious and repugnant. He said the former President had repeatedly been impugning on Jonathan’s integrity for the purpose of self-promotion. The presidential spokesman said it was senseless, irrational and out of place for Obasanjo, who still claims to belong to the same party as the President, to accuse Jonathan of plotting to win the rescheduled presidential elections by “hook or crook” and planning to plunge the nation into crisis if he loses the election. He said contrary to Obasanjo’s claim, the President would continue to support the Independent National Electoral Commission and other relevant federal agencies to ensure that the rescheduled elections are successfully conducted. The statement read, “We find the false claims and allegations reportedly made against President Goodluck Jonathan by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday in Abeokuta very odious and repugnant. “As we have had cause to say before, it is most regrettable indeed that a man like Chief Obasanjo, who should know better, chooses to repeatedly, wantonly, and maliciously impugn the integrity of a sitting President of his country for the primary purpose of self-promotion. “It is obvious from Chief Obasanjo’s serial vituperations against President Jonathan who is doing his best to positively transform Nigeria for the benefit of all of its people that he has willfully chosen to close his eyes to the present administration’s good works and intentions. For reasons best known to him, Chief Obasanjo has set his mind on regime change by fair or foul means. “Otherwise, it would be completely senseless, irrational and out of place for Chief Obasanjo, who still claims to belong to the same party as the President, to accuse President Jonathan of plotting to win the rescheduled presidential elections by “hook or crook” and planning to plunge the nation into crisis if he loses the election. www.punchng.com/news/obasanjo-working-towards-heading-interim-govt-presidency/ |

A detachment of the Nigerian military has stormed the Sambisa Forest in Borno State to dislodge members of the violent sect, Boko Haram, who are believed to have used the forest as their stronghold, from where they unleash their terrorist activities. |
Niger's parliament has voted to send troops to Nigeria to join the fight against militant Islamist group Boko Haram. The vote took place after Boko Haram attacked a prison and detonated a car bomb on Monday in the town of Diffa, near Niger's border with Nigeria. MPs said parliament unanimously authorised deploying 750 soldiers with a regional force battling Boko Haram. The Boko Haram has increasingly drawn in Nigeria's neighbours. On Saturday Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Benin agreed to establish a 7,800-strong force to fight the group. Boko Haram launched its first attacks in Niger last week, and has vowed to create an Islamic state. 'Motorcycles banned' Niger's President Mahamadou Issoufou, a Muslim, vowed to defeat Boko Haram. "All the Nigeriens know that these guys are not Muslims. On the contrary, what they are doing is not helping Islam," he said. Chadian soldiers near the Nigerian town of Gamboru on 1 February 2015 Chad has already deployed troops to Nigeria Women who escaped a 2014 Boko Haram attack in Nigeria's Adamawa state at a camp for displaced people, 31 January The conflict is said to have displaced at least 3.2 million people in Nigeria The BBC's Baro Arzika in the capital, Niamey, says many people are concerned about the growing threat posed by Boko Haram. The authorities have imposed an overnight curfew in Diffa and have banned the use of motorcycles, a common mode of transport, to prevent infiltration by the militants, he says. A journalist in Diffa told AFP news agency that at least one person was killed and 15 wounded in Monday's bomb blast at a market. Suspected Boko Haram militants also hijacked a bus in northern Cameroon, abducting at least 20 people, residents said. The bus was seized near the border area of Koza and driven towards the border with Nigeria, some 18km (11 miles) away, a resident told the Associated Press news agency. The conflict has forced a postponement of Nigeria's presidential and parliamentary elections from 14 February to 28 March. At least 3.2 million people have been displaced by the insurgency, launched in north-eastern Nigeria in 2009, Nigerian officials say. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-31351514 |

eleko1:Pls how did PDP come into dis? |
Since emerging as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), former military strongman General Muhammadu Buhari has played the fox. The man, whose presidential ambition has seen him through three previous unsuccessful contests, simply offered himself like a lamb to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Yoruba APC apparatchik to be repackaged. The repackaging must have included a suggestion that he refrains from his usual tough-talk and incendiary statements. In collusion with a section of the media, the physical make-over resulted in a suit-wearing, gap-toothed democrat. We also saw an amiable grandfather taking time off against the background of his busy office to do a hi-five with his grandson. Then he was sold as a leader intolerant of corruption and who did all those dastardly things in the eighties in pursuit of our collective good. Indeed the airwaves have been busy with stunts to blunt memories of the jackboot days. I guess all the while Tinubu and his cohorts told those lies, they only dreamt of the day their surrogate, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, would mount the stage as Nigeria's Vice-President and open yet another door of looting opportunities. As the grandmaster of godfatherism in Nigeria, the spoils of office have been Tinubu's driving force. As he sets to poke his greedy fingers into the pies in Abuja, he must be chuckling every night that he has played a fast one on us all forever, believing the tall tale on Buhari. Those who were not born or old enough to understand what it was to endure the worst kind of military dictatorship unleashed on us by General Buhari from 1983 to 1985, may have learnt about his horrific regime from history books. For those who went through that horrendous period, it is an experience that is better not remembered. The mere thought of a rehash, even if couched in a benevolent civilian toga, will be nightmarish. Buhari may have removed his military uniform, but he has remained unrepentant in his evil ways. No amount of public relations makeover will ever change this; the fact that he has not set our teeth on edge once again during this campaign is simply because he is acting on advice from his handlers to play dumb, even for a while. Like Wole Soyinka said, the crime that General Buhari committed against the entire nation ... is one of the most profound negations of civic being. To now expect a man who has refused to repudiate the most callous act of wanton murder of innocents during his military regime to suddenly turn a new leaf, will be too wishful indeed. The garb in which he has been dressed since this campaign, is contradictory in every material particular, to the man we all know. Nothing better illustrates this contradiction than his promise to end Boko Haram. Considered against his recent outburst on the wave of violence ravaging some northern states of the country, it rankles that we should be asked to trust the man who has been fuelling violence. The spontaneous violence and mayhem on innocent citizens following inciting statements he made upon losing the 2011 presidential election, are all too fresh in memory, just like the remorseless statement that ‘the monkey and baboon will be soaked in blood’ should he lose the 2015 presidential election. While President Goodluck Jonathan may not have totally delivered on some of his key promises, there is no doubt that the country is moving steadily in progress. It is hardly a time to move towards a trajectory that is unknown and portending grave consequences for the nation. Tinubu and the greedy flock of overzealous media hounds portraying him as the modern day messiah may yet be in for a big surprise. If a Muhammadu Buhari ever gets near the Presidency, the old lion in him, with fangs that are only being hidden, will roar back to life again. Those black suits and bow ties would have gone to the bins while those lamb's miens would have given way to his old bigoted ways. It will be a backward march into the past, and a future of uncertainty for the nation whose strides of the past few years have transformed the nation in more ways than one. In the annals of development in Nigeria, it will be a disaster of monumental proportions. Abba Adakole, Abuja www.thisdaylive.com/articles/the-thought-of-a-buhari-presidency/201382/ |
