info sharing - In Progress - These implies the 5 partner countries ( Canada, UK, Australia, Netherlands &United States) are exchanging information about you. This is a normal security routine check done on prospective immigrants coming into their country either temporarily or permanently. They make use of biometrics details ( which has data of the applicant) and share these with their partners. This is the stage where they detect an applicant that has violated any law, committed a crime, overstayed, denied or given a ban etc.

FCC comprises the above mentioned countries. But, I cant see any issue on your GCMS notes, it is just their normal internal security reviews.

I applied through the privacy act route on the 7th of February 2023 and got my GCMS note on March 11, 2023. I can't make any sense of what is there though. I applied on June 30, 2022.

It shows your application is still under active review. FCC means the five country conferences. Simply put, the Canadian authorities are asking information about you from the USA. The reason you see" Ready to be Assessed" USA.

But nothing to be worried about if your travel history is without issues.

It will end in praise!

You can apply for a visit visa to stay more than 6 months ( you can indicate your reasons in the application by quoting your work permit details). Attach it as a support document in your application.

It depends on the visa officer but you should be able to get 3 years of PGWP if the 16 month was attended as full time student with lots of course components. The final transcript from the school and Letter of completion is part of what the officer would review to determine length of PGWP. Again, it depends on the visa officer.

I did the affidavit the same time as when I did the name change so I already have that. During my visa application, my IDs I submitted had the hyphenated name so I submitted only the one and the same affidavit but not the change of name affidavit.

If my passport is requested now, I'm hoping they won't question the new passport as my current passport (with just my husband's surname) has more than a year remaining (it's expiring July 2024).

I think it is still early for you to worry about the passport submission of the one you intend to process. Also, the expiry is still more than a year from now as you have noted. Immigration works with passport information they have on file which was submitted with your application. This is what they would be expecting you to submit once your application is approved.

You can only submit a different passport other than the one IRCC have on file if they request it from you or give you a go-ahead to submit it. The visa officer can request for a renewed passport if they intend to issue a longer duration beyond the expiry date of your passport ( this is at the discretion of the visa officer). Since yours is still more then a year from now before expiry, I think you should exercise some patience in informing IRCC. What would likely happen is visa would be issued to you up to the expiry date of your passport at the maximum depending on the officer's discretion.

Additionally, you can then apply for a renewed visa when the current visa is expiring with your new name when applying for visa renewal attaching necessary support documents.

(she stated shopping for her coming wedding and visiting places like CN tower, Niagara falls, Ripley aquarium )

Response - If the total account balance was 3million, how much did she declare to finance for the duration of her trip.? - Please, bear in mind the cost of living for each province differs. some are much more expensive like Ontario, British Columbia etc. She needs to evaluate the cost of living. These would give an idea how much she declare is available to finance her trip. The shorter the duration of stay, the lesser cost she would need to declare.

Her sister taking care of her expenses can be a red flag. Since, she is working, the officer expect she has adequately planned her vacation, being she is earning good salary. She can just mention, she would be staying with her sister for that period, that's all.

Response She can submit in addition, a letter of reference too. The letter does not need stating she is planning to go for vacation. It should be a standard official reference letter addressed to the embassy introducing her as a current employee, stating her current position, and responsibilities. Her HR should have a template they issue to employees going for embassy appointments (USA) or applications like Canada.

Response - This is okay, there is no flight risk.

Response - Ghana wont count but the United Arab Emirates is fast becoming a country that cant be ignored in terms of sharing information with security agencies in western countries. Though, they are not officially part of the migration partners like (UK, Australia, USA & New Zealand) which are known to share information with Canada.

My suggestion would be she order for her GCMS notes to see what is noted there and also exercise some patience and strengthen her profile especially the finance part

[b]Response - I think this is a good attempt - I deduce from your response she plans to visit Ontario. Ontario is a very expensive province. The way to go about it is estimate the cost of living in Canadian dollars. Her sister could assist with this calculation then do an exchange rate to Naira, this would give you an idea. If the total cost gives you like 2,000 CAD dollars for example, plan to have 2,500 dollars as a buffer, but she has to make sure her account balance is way above that. The immigration officer does not expect she would empty her account on a trip.

Response - Good question- what i am saying is the application should speak more to her coming back home. Let the officer see more facts she has a life in Nigeria she has to come back to. Only declare the sister where really necessary like. declaring truthfully she has a sibling in Canada and the sister writing a letter of invitation but let her work towards demonstrating to the officer she has enough money for her trip.

she showed significant amount in her statement of account (3m), her sister is a PR in Canada and she has a job and siblings in Nigeria too which was all in the appliction she submitted. she is unmarried and has no kids. please advise if this person can reapply or should appeal.

Appeal is very rare for a verdict on visiting visa, that does not mean it is a bad idea. The best approach is to re-apply.

The immigration authorities might have seen a redflag somewhere ( which the person is not privy to) despite your friend appear to be eligible based on the strong profile. Your friend would need to carefully evaluate the information filled in the application. The following questions may give you some clue:

1. How long did you declare you would stay during the period of your visit in Canada?

2. How much was your account balance when you submitted your application vis-a-vis the amount you stated you intend to finance (3million) your trip?

3. Did you justify logically why you would be away from your job for that duration E.g leave approval.

4. How long have you been on the job?

5. Did you submit an official letter of reference signed by your HR indicating what you do, your position and that you are a staff?

6. Do you have any travel history [ this should not be a major yardstick but experience tends to proof IRCC favor those with travel history more] -

Majority of the Universities in Canada offer masters program, it all depends on what you want. The IRCC link below gives you access to all the schools in Canada. You can check schools in the province of your choice within your budget. Check their websites and see what they offer till you are able to find what you are looking for. But make sure you prioritize schools/courses that has PGWP eligibility.

Check their website and just follow the Faculty instructions on how to apply once you find your choice DLI.

I was advised by the US VAC agent last year to send to Los Angeles because New York might take longer time but not sure of now.

It took my parents passport less than two weeks to return from Los Angeles so you can plan two weeks. You would just need to be proactive to start the process once you arrive USA.

That's not correct, Vfs still do walk in passport submission. I submitted mine days ago, and paid 10,940. No appointment needed. 8am to 10am daily.

There’s been a change to that. VFS does physical submission. I was there last Thursday in Abuja and people for submission were attended to. The time is 8am - 10am.

Not to sure of collection but saw people come and they were asked to confirm the passports before leaving the counter.

The aspect of medical bills is a valid point too because I remember when she travelled to give birth to the second child, she was called aside to secondary at the US Border (in the Airport) and they demanded to see proof she fully paid for the medical bill for the first child. Luckily, she was able to demonstrate that then. Thanks for the heads up.

How do you think she can address the aspect of home ties. What do you think?

This won’t be easy. She left school 10 years ago. Her eventual employment had nothing to with anything she studied in school (in fact, she’s never used any of her degrees!). She wants a program totally divorced from her masters program. She’s been out of work for a while… but never say never. She just has to put together a good story.

So, applying for another masters may be a red flag.

I would need your thoughts and guidance regarding my question below:

I have a family member who intends to pursue a master's degree in the USA or Canada, but she strongly prefers the United States.

Summary of her profile:

• Married with two kids ( Both kids are US citizens)
• She worked as Air Hostess with one of the major international Airline but got out of job when the pandemic hit.
• She had her first degree in actuarial science and graduated in 2011.
• She had her Master's in Finance in the UK (University of Leeds), graduated in 2013, and then joined the Airline.
• She is not currently working and presently resides in Lagos.

What's your thought on how she can navigate US Immigration interview when she applies for an F1 Visa? I need your view regarding whether to apply alone or with her two kids ( both kids are still in the infantry, nine months old and 4 yrs). What courses do you think she can go for apart from Accounting? She does not like Accounting. Finally, is there anything you think she should note, do or be aware of before presenting herself for an F1 immigration interview? She is 33 yrs today.

I don't know much about how US immigration works, so looking forward to what you think.

Thank you for this information. I am in same situation, applied Nov 4, did biometrics at Lagos VAC a week after and got PPR Dec 14. I used the new portal and I have a valid US visa as well.

My question is I can do DHL, or walk-in to Lagos VFS? If I do walk-in to Lagos VFS, do I pick up there too when passport is stamped or it will be delivered to my address of choice? Are there any fees for walk-in?

VFS do not do physical passport submission & collection. You would need to use a courier. Pay for two way courier.

2nd Application

I was refused in 2018 , reason was purpose of travel. Even with a U.S.A visa then and my refusal was so fast. It came in 7 days.

Online application: July 4th
Biometrics: 2018
Request for Additional Document: September 12, IRCC requested for another biometric fee, I sent an email with previous refusal letter to show I had done it in the past.

No response from them as regards the mail só I decided to upload the previous refusal letter in my application portal Oct 4th

Oct 6th: They acknowledged my upload and said they were reviewing what I uploaded

Eligibility Review : Oct 10th

Oct 11: Nairobi office acknowledged the mail I sent in September and said my application was in que for review.

Correspondence letter 19th October
Original passport request 19th October.

Documents submitted;

Your host will also need to present his/her Canadian bank statement to show they have the financial capability to host you for the planned duration of stay. However, you can plan to travel with some funds just to show you have some means of livelihood. There is a section on the application portal while you are filling the form where you will indicate the amount you will be travelling with. But make sure you show strong home ties in your application.

1. Yes, you would need to attach an invitation letter from your host, and this should be addressed to:

The Visa Officer,
Deputy High Commission of Canada,
4, Anifowoshe Street,
Victoria Island,
Lagos.

2. It should all be in PDF and look official and if your bank statement if having too many pages, you can submit a mybankstatement for a duration of 6 months to 1 year preceding the date of submission of your application. There is a dedicated section for these documents in the portal. You can also use a table of content to show the officer where to find what. Note: Avoid lumpsum deposits.

3. Duration of the visa is at the discretion of the visa officer. For a visit visa, I would advise you to put a period that would be reasonable to the officer that you still have strong home ties and intend to return home. You may express intention of visit for 2 weeks and you can be given 6months, 1, 2 or 3 years. It all depends on the reviewing officer. Your focus should be more on putting duration of period that will appear reasonable. For a visit visa, the shorter the period the better otherwise, there should be a good explanation for a planned extended period of stay.

There is no harm in booking a return flight in advance. This would further proof to the officer your planned period of stay but does not affect their decision making whether to grant approval.

4. Dual intent is allowed in accordance with IRCC guidelines. You just need to proof that you meet the requirements for both visa categories.

USA and Canada share immigration data about applicants so your younger sister would most likely be asked questions in that line if she has been refused before. The visa officer would have gotten the information from Canada Immigration Authorities before she appears for the interview. I can not tell how much the ban would affect her chances for a student visa to the United States, and this would depend on the reason and the seriousness behind the ban.

Her chances would be slim if the ban was for a fraud attempt or something fairly serious, which may hamper her ability to convince the officer. However, if the ban resulted from something she feels can be explained and defended convincingly, she can give it a shot. If she decides to try it, the ban must be declared in her DS160 but presented convincingly, showing eligibility.

I hope you guys can make a decision that soothes you.

Please I need your advice on this. Someone close to me needs help. Her daughter is a nurse in the US and she gave birth going to about a year now, this is someone who waited for over 10 years without a child. Long story short, the US embassy denied the mum twice, the second time was yesterday.

So I want to advice her if they can take the Canada route. Something like getting a visitors visa and meet up with the daughter in canada , maybe for vacation for a month or few weeks, then when she returns, she can then try US again because I wonder why US will deny someone who wants to see her grandchild.

Please advice, so I can recommend the best solution for her. Also the daughter is resident in the US with her family.

There is something the US Consulate Visa officer is not convinced about, and you may need to speak to your friend to carefully analyse what she has put forward to the visa officer in the 1st and 2nd interviews. She might have the same refusal issue if that is not corrected before a 3rd trial. It can be painful, especially when you need to see your grandchild.

She must understand what the US Visa officers are concerned about, and the clues often come from the line of questioning. i.e. What questions did the officer ask, and what was her response? Did her response align with what she filled in her DS160 visa application form? You can get more clues from the US Visitor visa thread. Your friend has to ensure what is filled in her mum's DS160 in the first and second attempts is consistent with what she will fill in for her mum in the 3rd attempt. She should review it carefully for her mum to ensure nothing looks off that would violate her visa conditions.

One area she would need to work on is strong ties to Nigeria and something that would compel her to return home. Her daughter being established in the US would be a concern for the officer, so there needs to be a more robust picture that her mum will return home and not overstay.

She can apply for Canada visit visa, but she still needs to convince the Canada Immigration officer she is eligible and meets all the criteria for a visit visa. She must also declare the US refusals in her application, state what she thinks is the reason for her refusal and why her situation has further improved, making her eligible for the Canada visit visa.

Yes, I would advise you to do it. You can tag it "Purpose of Visit" or "Statement of Intent". it would give the VO a picture of your travel plans since you won't be there to defend yourself.

1 - Embassy - Most applications for temporary resident visas submitted by Nigerian nationals are processed in Nairobi. It is almost certain your file is with the Nairobi office. However since we are not 100% certain this is the case as sometimes files can be assigned to other IRCC office. Leave that space blank.

2 - File No: Insert your application number.

Both portals are good. There should be a reason IRCC launched the new portal for visit so you can stick to the new portal.
There is no harm in trying and give your best shot for your brother. Make sure his application addresses all the eligibility criteria for his intended visit for your wedding. Check IRCC web for all the eligibility criteria.

You guys can draft a one-page Letter of Intent or purpose of visit and explain section by section Professional Background and Work Experience, Home Ties, Proof of Finances, Travel History and with a good conclusion of your understanding to abide by the laws and regulations of Canada. Remember Canada does not conduct interviews like the United States so make the documents speak for him as much as possible in his absence.

Something like statement of Purpose for student visa but this can be more concise and with good introduction. Let it be the first page they see on the client section of his portal. You can then make the next page Confirmation of Invitation by you (indicating you are inviting your brother). This would help the visa officer to have a quick overview of your brother profile before commencing their checks on the documents.
