Life is puzzling.

Sometimes I wonder why our politicians steal so much. By God's grace, I became rich and graced to see hundreds of million. A few contracts here and there and a great career. But here comes a new problem. This doesn't excite me anymore. The next 10 million is not going to make my life any better. Promotion at work, increase in income, nothing excites me anymore and worse is that I am not materialistic at all, so acquiring gadgets, toys, or building mansions could never make me excited. I live a very simple life, wear basic quality fashion items, and drive simple cars. This is just my personality and not an act of humility.

Despite all the many good things that have happened in my life and all the things that I could potentially acquire. I am at a stage where I am really confused about myself.
Sometimes I buy unnecessary things I don't need just to feel like I am spending money. Other times, I am quick to assist deserving friends.

If you are not materialistic and yet, rich. How did you overcome this problem? This problem has left me in a state where I am neither happy nor sad.

Bro life is empty, the richer you get the meaningless life is.

Well, yours is still a sweet experience, lost my job since last year, having being trying everyday to get job and until now, nothing yet. Life has been immensely hard.

Fast forward to this year, I realized, we were still better in last year compared to now. My people, I swear down, we have no food to eat, myself, wife and my one year old son, we’ve been surviving on a cup and half of gari daily. All cos, I’m broke inside out, no one is out there to help or support you. In fact, at this point where we get gari on credit, if I would like to respect myself, we are not suppose to go there for credit this week. Most of us has location preference especially when it comes to getting a US Visa. Wich of the location do you prefer and what is your reason?

Oh God I need your favor at this point of my life. I have 5 Msc admissions already but waiting for assistantship from my various departments.

I can't imagine being in Nigeria for another 1 year just because of unable to get assistantship. God knows depression will set in if I can't make anything out of the 5 schools that admitted me, after all the effort.

I will wait for my schools to decide but if they didn't give I will still find way and move.

I have booked my visa appointment for May already.

To be honest, I have had long-term relationships with some clients since 2021 when I joined the platform. When work is slow on their end or no new features, I turn on my availability and apply to about 2 - 3 gigs ( Note, I mostly never get picked or interviewed for these gigs). Primarily, my reason for applying is tied to my belief that merely turning on availability is not enough to get you invites. Then all I need to do is wait patiently, it might take a few days, but almost certainly, I get several invites and I chose the ones that match my short-term goals. Of course, there will be several other applicants, but several other factors play into getting the gig. Rapport with clients like djreloaded mentioned pricing and most important, skill and timely delivery history.
However, it is life, some just ghost you, and others, you simply will not get it because of some weird basis.
The playing field is no longer level, this use of connects to boost proposals is thievery in my own opinion.

Upwork is a means to an end, but not the end itself.

One thing I like about Upwork is that it has lots of red-hot client ready to hire immediately no time to nurture any client.

However, the connect boosting and profile availability are capitalist ideas from Upwork to keep feeding fat from freelancers. And the circle continues.

I pity newbie in this new development because Upwork will use their connects shine wella.

Not everyone has been able to get remote roles without Upwork, and some of us are lucky that we don't buy connects.
If you think about it, 20% is only on the first 500$, 10% thereafter to the next 10,000$. It seems better than a fixed pay in Nigeria that inflation of about 21% fuc*s you over.

How often do you get gig now, competition is deep throat. Unlike before you hardly see 20 proposal, now in just few minutes you can see 50+

You buy endless connects to bid and bid for job, they will still deduct 10-20% on your hardwork earnings.
