ComputersRe: Broadband Internet Services in Nigeria by oldie(m): 9:38pm On Dec 28, 2007
Info:
A bit is a single numeric value, either '1' or '0', that encodes a single unit of digital information.
A byte is a sequence of 8 bits.

Usually, data communication speed is measured in bits/kilobits/megabits per second,
while storage space is measured in bytes/kilobytes/megabytes.

In data communications, a Kilobit is one thousand bits.
It is used to measure the amount of data transferred per second.
Kilobits per second is shortened to kb/s, Kbps or kbps (as opposed to KBps, which is Kilobytes per second.
Note the capitalization).
The lowercase b is commonly used to denote bits, while the uppercase B is used for bytes.

1 kb/s = 1000 bits per second
1 KB/s = 1024 bytes per second

Solutions:
Increase generation capacity to about 10MW now and gradually increase by 5MW every other year.
Cheapest technology suited to our environment
is gas turbine. Others are coal and hydro
Solar is too expensive.

Improve Transmission and Distribution capabilities of PHCN
Make Bill payment more efficient
Commercialise/Privatise PHCN
Retain only productive and trainable PHCN staff
Employ new and more professional staff
Provide adequate tools
Re train/orientate PHCN staff
Re orientate consumers
Decentralise PHCN operations

Wysiwyg:
Hey I was wondering, resided at ikeja before and used to see some available wireless connections on my laptop computer but since I've relocated to agege, 've not seen any available one. The main question is: is there a way to get those connections back maybe through an external antenna or dish or something? Is it feasible? Opinions and answers will really be appreciated please.
It is possible
But you must know the frquency bands and the approx location of the wireless source
You then need a high gain directional antenna and possibly an RF amplifier (booster)
These are generally called WIFI Hotspot Range Booster antennas
But they are not cheap
Goodluck!
PoliticsRe: Online Scam - The International Conspiracy Against Nigeria by oldie(m): 12:45am On Dec 27, 2007
On line scam is an American invention
419/AFF has its origin in Nigeria and obviously Nigerians are in the majority
419/AFF is a subset of scam
In the aggregate, there are more American scammers than Nigerians
Good thing is that Nigerians discuss and condemn scammers, not the holier than thou attitude of
the Americans.
Actually the western world started "scamming" Africa and Africans many centuries ago

ComputersRe: How Can I Protect A Folder In "windows Explorer"? by oldie(m): 12:49pm On Dec 26, 2007
Folder Lock is fast file-security software that can password-protect, lock, hide, and encrypt any number of files, folders, drives, pictures, and documents in seconds. Locked files are undeletable, unrenamable, unmovable, hidden, and inaccessible. You can lock, scramble, or encrypt depending on speed and security.
Folder Lock is fully portable, so you can protect your files on USB flash drives, disks, CD-RWs, notebooks, and hard disks, and it doesn't require installation on another PC. Folder Lock protects files in Windows, DOS, and Safe modes, even when you change your OS or boot from a disk.
Folder Lock doesn't let you delete its own program folder, and it can't be uninstalled without the correct password. Additional options include Stealth Mode, Hacker Attempt Monitoring, Shred files, AutoLock, Auto Shutdown PC, Lock your PC, Erase PC tracks, 256-bit Blowfish Encryption and Context Menu in Explorer.
It is Windows Vista/2003/XP/2000/NT/Me/98/98S compatible and works on all kinds of disk types like FAT16, FAT32, NTFS. Folder Lock is the most downloaded file-security program in the market today.
Version 5.7.5, Released on May 17th, 2007
Now Folder Lock automatically locks and hides your files and folders kept inside the 'Locker' folder in case you forget to lock when shutting down or restarting your computer. You no longer need to remember each time before shutting down your PC to lock any folder. Tooltips added to the browse list so that you can easily see the complete folder paths in 'Unlock folders' list when you move your mouse pointer to the list. Many other fixes and enhancements

ComputersRe: Problem: Some Websites Not Opening With Starcomms by oldie(m): 4:40pm On Dec 25, 2007
tai2:
It's a Starcomms DNS problem, use an anonymizer or better still resolve the IP addresses of your intended destination and access it,
Some websites do not allow for anonymous login
Also, you can only resolve IP addresses if they are dynamic
I think Starcom IP address is static, you cant change it
ComputersRe: Problem: Some Websites Not Opening With Starcomms by oldie(m): 4:33pm On Dec 25, 2007
Reltel, Starcom or Multilinks are all the same
They all operate similar voice-centric platforms
When data subscribers on Reltel increase, they will experience the same
problems being encountered by Starcom subs.

Hopefully, better competitors will come on board, by 2008.

I will stick to my Starcom EVDO, until then

PoliticsRe: Iyabo Obasanjo In Contract Scandal by oldie(m): 4:22pm On Dec 20, 2007
I abhor corruption
But we must not fight corruption with any hidden agenda, be it tribal, ethnic,
religion, personal hatred or whatever
When we fight this evil with open mind, without grudges or sensationalism
then we are on the right path
We should not rush to judgement from what an agrieved partner
has alledged. When the going was good, did they complain?.
Good for all us that the contract has been cancelled

Please, please let us remove our personal biases from this evil
We should be intelligent enough to analyse the corruption problems
that confront us or else we will be part of the corruption cycle.

Kobojunkie:
Solution: Have Media take some of the focus off the corrupt and place it more on those who actually deserve to get airtime for the good work they do.
The media is part of the problem. They worship mediocrity and glorify corruption.
The media feeds fat from these corrupt people.
One of the solutions is to start talking about corruption in our country, the way we are doing now.

The process of minimising corruption is a long, tedious and frustrating one.
But let us start now!

What are your suggestions? If you have any…
grin I am already part of the solution, by living in the system!
I do believe in education too. And in my own little way, I have been able to contribute to my profession, by educating the young graduates, to do it right, professionally and ethically.
It takes the efforts of all to make it work.
No abradacabra solution to these problems, definitely not your extremist option. I abhor violence.
I still believe we can make Nigeria work. I am convinced
Nigeria is not a hopeless case.
Or am I deluded? sad
PoliticsRe: Nigerians Are Inherently Corrupt--agree Or Disagree? by oldie(m): 4:13pm On Dec 19, 2007
@EloSela
Dont get me wrong. These things happen. I would be deluding myself if I thought otherwise.
We meet these types of frustrations everyday here.
Some of us are determined to stick with the system and possibly make a positive change
On the other hand, I do not have any probs with "awol Nigerians" grin

My believe is just that you can impact the system better if you live in the system.

What are your own solutions to these problems?
In 1961 as young man in lagos, a personnel manager took
10 pounds sterling  from me, to get me a 3 pounds sterling a month job.
1n 2007 i ask a relative to help me sell a car in nigeria,
months later he said arm robber stole it from him.
I have no answer to our problem. God help us

What type of answer is this now?
If by 1961 you were old enough to work, then you must be above 60 by now.
And this is the type of answer you give?
Pls stay where you are. The new Nigeria does not need this type of answer.
If you were the best, there was no need to bribe anybody to get employed in 1961.

Well you don’t know me to say what my approach was. Some of the people who took advantage of me and my efforts actually surprised me because I never would have guessed that they were capable of behaving in such a way. I suppose when money all decency and rationale goes flying out of the window.
I was not being personal with my comments. I apologise if it sounded so.
But my observation is the general trend.

EloSela:
Some of the people who took advantage of me and my efforts actually surprised me because I never would have guessed that they were capable of behaving in such a way. I suppose when money all decency and rationale goes flying out of the window.
Because you think some category of people should behave some way, when money/integrity is involved.
No, it does not work that way, even with Nigerians. When you start treating people based on categorisation, then there is a probelm.

, And back to the topic, whatever any one would say, I still believe, this is the best country in the world. We have our problems, so also other countries. These are problems that are solvable. Problems are not solved by running away from them!
