Don't good little things (even when they are symbolic) matter anymore?
PoliticsRe: Should Tribe (ethnicity) Matter In 2008? by oldie(op): 7:56pm On Feb 02, 2008
I do not have any problems with tribal/clan allegiance
But must we sacrifice tribe/ethnicity for quality
Must we always blame tribalism/ethnicism for our short-comings?, our failures?, even when we are not competitive?
Must we always see things from a tribalistic perspective?
PoliticsShould Tribe (ethnicity) Matter In 2008? by oldie(op): 5:55pm On Feb 02, 2008
I have come across so many young Nigerians
who still claim that they are un-employable
or they can not get employment/contract,
because of their tribe or where they come from.

Does this still happen in 2008?

I run my own business, and I have not got any
business because of my tribe. I got jobs through
networking (not tribal networking)

I employ based on merit

Shouldn't this be the norm? especially when you run a
professional outfit?

I have been in this forum for about 3-4 months now
and I have discovered that tribal/ethnicity sentiment amongst
the youth is rather high and sometimes defeatist, demoralising and un-productive.

Should it be so?
Shouldn't we always present our first eleven?
Am I deluding myself?

Pls let me have your thoughts

@oldie

You are only trying to be a patriotic Nigerian thats all. Come out and say the truth jo.
You cannot be more critical than myself about the standards of our engineering graduates.
I employ and train some.
Some are bad, so also some are very good
But do not generalize and ridicule the Nigerian engineers
Oh by the way, I am an engineer grin

ishmael:
See the truth is that our environment does not make Nigerian Engineers to seen as competent.
Now we are now reading from the same page!
This is not peculiar to the Nigerian engineers, it affects all professions including technicians
Most of the problems we (professionals) face, are systemic and environmental
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by oldie(m): 8:34am On Feb 01, 2008

How many computer microchips and hard drives have our computer engineers designed and developed?? How many transistors and capacitors have our electonic engineers designed and developed?? How many injectors and carburetors have our Automobile engineers designed and developed?? Tell me one house and bridge our civil engineers designed and built that has not collapsed?? just to ask a few.
please goto google and type the word engineer to know more about who an engineer is and what he does.
The more you write, the more you show how little you know about engineering and the Nigerian engineers
Either you are fighting your own personal battle or you are being mischievious

N.B - Pls lets make the discussion very civil and polite!

CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by oldie(m): 10:37pm On Jan 31, 2008
People like Ishmael are clueless and have the environmental perception of who an engineer is or what an engineer does
The Nigerian Engineer has been called several names; Air-conditioned engineer, Theoretical engineer,
Arm chair engineer including Coat wearing engineer. Forgetting that engineering is about the use of brain as
against 'brawl' the society (Nigerian Society) does not have regard for any intellectual or creative work.

There are damn good engineers practising in all engineering facets in Nigeria and worldwide.
If you are ignorant about who an engineer is, how would you know what he/she does?

PoliticsRe: Poverty Of Ideas, Lack Of Willpower & Vision by oldie(m): 8:42pm On Jan 31, 2008
vigasimple:
Go and see my contribuion on power. it can be simpler than that.

We need 50,000M at 65MW per each local government ( of 774 local govt)at costs of $50billion costing each local goverment N82Billion naira or $65Million dollars.

Do I look or sound like someone without ideas or how to implement them. and i can provide you where the monies can come from, so is the other areas like transport etc.
I have solid ideas, i am not in govrnment neither do I want to be but I am saying things can be done better 1000 times, you and all other well mening Nigerians know it, should we settle for less?

I will leave all others to answer that and other questions.
Your solution for power has just shown how clueless you are on how to solve power problems in Nigeria.
1. We do not need 50,000 MW in Nigeria now, May be 10-15,000 MW and gradual increase of 5,000 MW every other year
2. If you will spend $50b for generation, how much would you spend for transmission and distribution?

Easy to criticize, generalize and think you have the best idea in the world!
PhonesRe: Guys God I Need Help! My Phone Just Got Microwaved by oldie(m): 2:27pm On Jan 30, 2008
For phones that fall in liquids, especially water based liquids:
1. Immediately remove the battery
2. Put the phone in the sun for 2-3 hours. You can also use hair dryer as hot air blower
3. Clean the battery contacts.
4. Switch  on your phone and check for normal operations

If after the steps mentioned above and phone does not work or work properly, you can then
1. Disassembly your phone carefully (Please know what you are doing!)
2. After disassembly, soak all units, apart from the lcd, camera unit) in a methylated spirit
3. Use an old tooth brush soaked in the spirit to clean all the components
4. Dry these units in the sun or use hair dryer
5. Assemble the phone
6. Test

If all these fail, send your phone to a phone repairer!

But for this "microwaved" phone, either there is still water in the antenna switch and rf amplifier or they are damaged
Whichever way, take the phone to a phone repairer

PoliticsRe: 419 And Nigerian Ethnicities by oldie(m): 1:24pm On Jan 30, 2008
There are two types of 419ners
1. The type Big B1 is talking about.
His figures might be wrong, but his classification is right
2. The IBB type - duping the governed. Almost all our leaders
are guilty of this. There is no ethnic colouration

In most cases the IBB type breeds the first category

Science/TechnologyRe: Human Waste For Electricity, Do You Support It? by oldie(m): 7:35am On Jan 28, 2008
For a long-term solution, the hybrid system for non-grid power supply systems, is what I will recommend, just like uspry1, suggested

And for the solar system . . ., the capital outlay for a solar system, which is about $6,000-$7,000 per KW is still too expensive for the average Nigerian home
An average home will need about 2.5kva.
We also need to take into consideration, the efficiency of the solar power systems

In the interim, I use a semi-hybrid system of inverter, generator and NEPA grin
Science/TechnologyRe: Human Waste For Electricity, Do You Support It? by oldie(m): 9:11pm On Jan 27, 2008
@Kobojunkie
I agree that solar energy is an option to consider, but your analysis are rather very optimistic

1. An average family does not spend $100k/year or do you mean 100k Naira?
2. You have to change your battery banks every 2-3 years, because of of our temperature and humidity. Batteries do not last forever! and these batteries are not cheap
3. When you increase number of solar panels, you need to increase your battery capacity.

What is the capacity of this $5k solar generator?
What type of backup batteries are you using? Ordinary or Deep cycle?
PoliticsRe: My Records Better Than Obasanjo’s, Says Ibb by oldie(m): 3:42pm On Jan 25, 2008
IBB is a revisionist
He is surrounded by hungry politicians who tell him how good he was
He has started believing that too, hence this arrogance
I do not know too much about Balewa, Ironsi or Gowon to make any judgement
By my own assessment, IBB will be the least ranked, worse than Abacha.
At least we knew what Abacha stood for
What has IBB stood for, in his life.
He is a very cheap opportunist

PoliticsRe: Which Political Party Is The Best? by oldie(m): 2:46pm On Jan 24, 2008
There are two political parties in Nigeria
PDP- in-government and
PDP-out-of-government (All other political parties)
They are all the same, no ideology.
They are neither left nor right
They stand for nothing
They are middle of nowhere
Somethings common to all, though are: greed, corruption and planlessness sad

Some of our private hospitals are world class (whatever that means)
But like EloSela said, only the rich can afford them.
You will even be surprised that some hospitals have Telemedicine facilities that are connected to
some good hospitals any where in the world.

There is a hardware solution called MMC unlocker
With the hardware solution, you do not loose any data
Take it to the computer village or any good phone repair shop
PoliticsRe: Will Nigeria Ever Get Better? by oldie(m): 8:20pm On Jan 22, 2008
invisible!:
Some will always find faults with even a good thing, most of us that complain about this country just sit around doing nothing, if you contribute something, you get something. The people benefiting from this country started something, invested something, or discovered something.

Each of these take serious challenge and sacrifice. Even in the developed world, they face challenges in an attempt to make their country better, why can't we make ours better. There is no light, how many people pays their light bills? We use free power but will complain that NEPA is killing us. (we know they are thieves among them), but since you are not Ribadu, what can you do?

Be positive, positive things will start happening around you.
Well put
Some people still do not believe anything works in Nigeria
This negativity has affected their psyche

EducationRe: What is wrong with our Nigerian English? by oldie(m): 3:20pm On Jan 21, 2008
I do not think there is anything wrong with the Nigerian english.
I also do not care about the accent
My problems are the tenses
When you write and speak with the correct tenses, then you do not have any problems
We are Nigerians with our peculiarities, we should not try to imitate others
Good english spoken with Nigerian accent is not a problem
Neither is it wrong.
