Nairaland GeneralSallah Palava by Olusharp(op):
I woke this morning to get a text message from a friend of mine inviting me to come celebrate Sallah with him, "not again" i said within as i put on my short...
I remembered the ordeal Sule my friend put me through last year, i received his call last year a day to Sallah as he had done today which i promised to come since he said there was going to be a lot of meats and food, not that i am a glutton but at the mention of food my stomach must rumble...
On the day of the celebration,i refused eating anything as i told anyone that cared to listen that i am on dry fasting, even my mom was surprised i was not eating as food was my second nickname,my mom went ahead to remind me of the other day when the pastor said i should fast for a day, when the time clock 11:00am i was already feeling miserable so i took some cash or let me say i stole some cash then lied to my mom i was going for a walk, i went to the closest food vendor and ate to my satisfaction, i cleaned my mouth then went back home acting sluggishly as though i had not eaten, the next day when i went to the pastor for prayers, he told my mom to my amazement that i didn't fast while i sweared heaven and earth that i faster, then the pastor said he was the man putting on red shirt sitting close to me when i was eating.."pls what was he looking for? "
I became sober as i knew i had been caught red handed,my mom looked at me ashamed.so on the day i told her i was fasting willing she was glad as she even prayed for me...
By 10am i was on my way to Sule's house,I met another friend of mine named Saheed,he also asked me to come over saying they killed two fowls, "2fowls?when Sule dad killed two cows, i will rather go to Sule's house "i thought within, i lied to him saying i would come...
Getting to Sule's house i met a lot of people,i quickly sighted my friend Sule who said i should help in serving the food, i did it diligently hoping that i will get a bag full of meat, despite the fact that i was hungry i worked from 12pm till 6pm Serving the guest.. Then it was time to go home,I dragged my friend to a corner telling him i was going home,he thanked for my help and turned to leave to attend to other matter,i held his cloth"Sule wey my meat ?"I asked almost crying,,he looked at me "guy you mean say you nor carry any meat since when you dey serve? That was the reason i asked you to serve na"he said looking surprise, I stood still as tears where now forming in my eyes "guy you no go believe i never chop anything today, help me find something to chew" i begged,he ran inside and bought a chewing bone, which i chewed till i got to the front of my house...

Today as i saw Sule's message i swear i will carry 3bags with me tomorrow when going to his house and this time i pray he put me charge of food as he did last year and i would be smarter....

The end...

Happy Sallah Celebration to my Muslim brothers and Sisters...

@OP: To be honest, I was full of skepticism when I first opened your thread, expecting some dim-witted teenage comments in here. But, as read through, I actually started to "feel" you and was hoping to learn something from you on how you handled the situation....but frankly speaking, I'm quite disappointed with your ending.

It's such a poor ending, I doubt if you're really a parent. How did you deal with the situation? Did you buy the things listed out for you by your daughters / kids? You say you calculated the total costs amounting to N100,000. Okay, then what? Did you mentally juggle what's affordable and what isn't? Or decide what you / the family will have to cut back on? What was your response to the waiting kids? Or you just turned your back on them, ignoring their presence??

You also mentioned that your wife came in, pretending not to know anything about the list - sure I get that. I'll admit that bit got me smiling. Yes, but what happened next? Didn't you discuss with her? What did you both mean by "God will provide"? What sort of irresponsible response was that? Is that how you "adults" tackle issues? By skipping the problem and hoping Manna falls from heaven? Like seriously?

If you can't give us the complete story, then perhaps this isn't your writeup afterall, but someone else's you copied and pasted on here, typical Nairaland style (nothing surprising there). In which case I suggest you take this to the Literature Section (with the source, of course). It is a good read afterall, despite the poor ending, but I learnt nothing from it as a parent with kids of school age. There aren't any Lessons Learnt here for us, Family Section members.

Oh, and one more thing: there was absolutely nothing wrong with "your" elder son calling to say he misses home and his family. A simple "we miss you too, son" response, and some encouragement to work hard at his studies would have been sufficient. Or better still, offering to call him back on your phone so he could chat briefly to his younger siblings and mum would have been okay - rather than you cutting him off the way you did. That was brusque - or are you a brute?? huh
thanks sir for the criticism i am happy someone did and at least you gained somethings ,i am not a parent yet but i own this write up and you can't find it anywhere on net except through me ... once again thanks for reading!

What Parents are facing during this season

Last Night, while i was on my bed thinking of how the day had gone , I was about saying my prayers when i heard a silent knock on my door,i was sure it couldn't be madam because she would barge in being the mother of house, "Come in " i said as i roll over on the bed, two little heads appeared, my pulse increased on seeing them because any time they come in this manner something was at at stake, "My Angels come in,you want to see daddy?"I asked smiling, they walked in "Yes dad" Bolu the elder one said, "ok come closer, daddy will listen" i assured as i started calculating what could have called for this meeting, there was an A4 sheet with them,my pulse increased higher again "Daddy we are resuming on monday" the bomb was shelled, I need not be told what was on the paper any more, i collected the paper and saw like 12text books each, the least price being one thousand naira, i turned the other page and saw the list of things they wanted to buy,new bags, new shoes, new school uniforms, Seun in Primary school even said she was going to buy new basket and water bottle,i looked further into the list and saw the New school fees for each of them,i breath in then with a smile i dismissed them..
"Their mom must have done a good job, training them to come meet daddy" as i brought out my calculator to do some calculations, lo and behold every thing amounted to one hundred and ten thousand naira only, i breathed in again.. The other day my mom was singing the song that she wanted more children, "after three children?" i asked as i stared at her in amazement, maybe she thinks we were still in the 1940s where parents gave birth to as many as they want and lead them to the farm, that was the order of the day back then not now, if you say because the holy books say "you should go into the world and multiply"it doesn't mean you should start giving birth like pigs in this modern dispensation.I was brought back to reality when a call came from my eldest child, he is a student at a Federal University ,i felt hot immediately, talk of the devil and he appears, "another money Matter, may it is money for handouts this time" i thought as i picked his call, "Hello,Dad how are you and everybody...." i cut him short "Femi what's it?" i asked as i was impatient, "Dad,i just wanted to greet you because of i miss everyone" he said,i heaved a sign of relief "eh,Femi so this what you do with the little pocket money i send you, if we miss you we will call you, good night." I said dropping the call.. After brain storming for a while, madam came in and acted as if she didn't have a foreknowledge of what the kids had come to discuss with me,i gave her the paper they gave me and she read it as if it was the first time she was seeing it, "Dear,God will provide for us" she said... "Amen" I said sinking into the bed...

To all the parents out there God will provide for you...

Nairaland GeneralHow To Make Free Call Using Local Content by Olusharp(op): 11:43pm On Sep 10, 2015
How to make call without having to buy recharge card using local content...

I have been having this thought for a while and so decided to share it.. Ever since mtn and it sisters in the communication system has decided to charge us at exorbitant price on calls made and especially the new MTN saga of re- registering your sim,
What if we decided to let go of mtn and it sisters and seek to communicate using local and traditionals means i know the thought of some people will be "is this guy asking us to go back to ancient era where drums, gun, letters, gong are used?" hell no.. As a fan of Nollywood especially yoruba movies, you see a scene where an individual can just monitor another individual by watching them through mirrors, cloth or even in their palms. If truly all these her part of our culture and truly exist in reality..Then it would be a nice thing making call for free..laughing.. All i need do is get a bowl of water or a mirror or my palm say some incantations, at the time i am saying the incantation network is loading, then i call the would be receiver's name, eg...Sule,Sule, Sule,..he opens his own palm or look into his own mirror and we talk for free.....
What am i even saying that's if it truly exist how to make free calls ....

Nairaland GeneralWhat No One Is Seeing? by Olusharp(op):
WHAT NO ONE IS SEEING… (AFTER THE ISSUED BAIL OUT TO THE STATES, WHAT NEXT?)
It saddens my heart when workers in various states across the country could not get their expected income as at when due, some other states went as far as not paying for months which made the labour force to carry out strike action as some are still on it despite the bail out.. It is not a thing to boast about that of the 36 states in Nigeria only four states are solvent and debt free..
Now the Federal Government saw the pains and heard the cries of the suffering masses and decided to provide the various states with bail out fund to rescue them only to pay back after twenty years with an added interest of 9% which is a laudable effort coming from the Federal Government but what people are not looking at is this “what will happen to the various states after spending the bail out fund?” After spending the bail out fund on salaries of workers and other expenses and the fund dries up, all of the states will go back into debt as most states depend on allocations from the Federal with little or no source of internal revenue whatsoever apart from some few privileged states, it is high time the Federal government let each states source for it fund from within rather than depend on “oil money”. If states like Lagos can exist without really relying on federal allocation then other states can. But we cannot compare other states with Lagos as it is “the center of excellence” and the economic hub of Nigeria but if a state like Anambra can be debt free then it is high time for the “debt filled” states in Nigeria to look within..
My Question remains “AFTER SPENDING THE ISSUED BAIL OUT TO THE STATES, WHAT NEXT?”

STOP SUBTLE SALARY CUT; BAIL-OUT
HAS COME!
A Press Statement by the Council of
Academic Staff Unions of Osun State-
Owned Tertiary Institutions
(CASUOSTI)
5th September, 2015
We observe with utter disappointment
that, rather than seeking an end to the
ongoing industrial crisis in the State-
owned Polytechnics and Colleges of
Education, the Government of the
State of Osun is complicating the
already painful situation by a subtle
pay-cut. The ridiculous and
unexpected pay-cut was first
witnessed for the months of January
& February, 2015 when the amounts
paid as our salaries were less than
what we have on our pay-slips and
the payroll schedule prepared by our
institutions. Specifically, Government
unilaterally, and in flagrant disregard
for the ethics of payroll
administration, pruned off the
financial effects of 2014 promotions
and “migration of lower cadres” from
our salaries.
In our efforts to seek justice amicably,
we consulted the State Government
through the Chief of Staff and the
Head of Service in separate meetings.
At those meetings, Government
admitted our position that the
financial effects of 2014 promotions
and “migration of lower cadres” are
irreversible. We had mutual
understanding that our salaries would
be paid correctly once the then
expected “bail out” funds were
received from the Federal
Government.
Alas! Now that the much expected
“bail out” funds have been received,
the State Government has concluded
plans to sustain the pay-cut contrary
to the principles of fair-play, equity
and the collective agreement between
our Union and the State Government.
For the avoidance of doubt, staff
promotion in tertiary institutions is
earned on stringent conditions of
career advancement and not
‘automatic routine’ nor on the basis of
mere benevolent sentiments. It is due
inadvertently for each staff purely on
merit at regulated intervals and upon
strict evaluation of personnel
performance in terms of fulfillment of
stipulated criteria of assessment. The
practice of “earned promotion” or,
better put, “merit-based career
advancement”, is universal in
academics and mandatory for
accreditation processes. Apart from
these general factors, the 2014
promotion under discussion is
situated within the following context:
1) the promotions have taken
notional effects as it were with effect
from 1st October, 2014; 2) that our
Union tolerates later financial effect
(1st January, 2015) of the promotion
is borne out of patriotic sensitivity to
the financial circumstances of
Government; a breach of the financial
effect is therefore the least expected
reciprocation from Government; 3)
based on notional effect of the
promotion, all affected staff members
have taken further steps in
institutional hierarchy with attendant
additional workload and co-curricular
responsibilities; 4) in preparation for
the promotion and with a view to
meeting the requirements, concerned
members of staff have expended
intellectual and financial resources on
publications, travel for academic
conferences (both local and abroad)
and pursuit of higher degrees at
personal cost; therefore, denial of the
financial effect of the promotion as
agreed and fixed (with effect from 1st
January, 2015) is not only unfair but
tantamount to demoralization and
discouragement towards academic
improvement which is a sine qua non
for sustaining and improving the
standards of our institutions.
On the other hand, the policy of
“migration of lower cadres” cannot be
reversed because it is an equalization
policy following “migration of higher
cadres (i.e. CONTISS 15)” which had
been implemented in Osun State
under the previous administration.
Implementation of the “migration of
lower cadres” had been due since the
year 2009 but agreed upon by
Government and our Union to take
notional effect from 1st August, 2014
and financial effect (without arrears)
as from January, 2015. It is therefore
totally unfair and injurious that
Government could so unilaterally
subtract the meagre financial effect of
this policy from the salaries of the
affected staff members who have
patriotically forfeited enormous
arrears by sensitivity to the financial
circumstances of the State
Government.
While using this medium to commend
President Muhammadu Buhari for his
intervention through the bail-out
funds for payment of salaries by
debtor-States, we call all and sundry
and stakeholders in Osun State
tertiary education sector to join voices
with ours in ensuring that the State
Government does not mutilate our
much expected salaries under any
guise whatsoever.

Lasisi Jimoh

Olusegun Lana

PoliticsPresident Muhammadu Buhari And His Vice, Prof Yemi Osinbajo Declares Assets. by Olusharp(op): 8:32pm On Sep 03, 2015
A statement by the Senior Special
Adviser on Media and Publicity to the
President on Media and Publicity, Mr
Garba Shehu said “the documents
submitted to the CCB, which officials
say are still being vetted and will soon
be made public, show that prior to
being sworn in on May 29, President
Buhari had less than N30 million to
his name. He also had only one bank
account, with the Union Bank.
President Buhari had no foreign
account, no factory and no
enterprises. He also had no registered
company and no oil wells”, the
statement said.
The statement further added that “the
Vice President, Professor Yemi
Osinbajo (SAN), who had been a
successful lawyer before his foray into
politics declared a bank balance of
about N94 million and 900,000 United
States Dollars in his bank accounts”.
It added that President Buhari “had
shares in Berger Paints, Union Bank
and Skye Bank”.
The documents also revealed that
“President Buhari had a total of five
homes, and two mud houses in
Daura. He had two homes in Kaduna,
one each in Kano, Daura and in Abuja.
One of the mud houses in Daura was
inherited from his late older sister,
another from his late father. He
borrowed money from the old
Barclays Bank to build two of his
homes.
“President Buhari also has two
undeveloped plots of land, one in
Kano and the other in Port Harcourt.
He is still trying to trace the location of
the Port Harcourt land.
“In addition to the homes in Daura,
he has farms, an orchard and a ranch.
The total number of his holdings in
the farm include 270 heads of cattle,
25 sheep, five horses, a variety of
birds and a number of economic
trees”.
The documents also showed that the
retired General “uses a number of
cars, two of which he bought from his
savings and the others supplied to
him by the federal government in his
capacity as former Head of State. The
rest were donated to him by well-
wishers after his jeep was damaged in
a Boko Haram bomb attack on his
convoy in July 2014.
The same forms, according to Mr
Shehu, notes that ” Vice-President,
Professor Yemi Osinbajo’s asset
declaration include his 4-bedroom
residence at Victoria Garden City,
Lagos and a 3-bedroom flat at 2
Mosley Road, Ikoyi. The Vice President
also has a 2-bedroom flat at the
popular Redemption Camp along
Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and a 2-
bedroom mortgaged property in
Bedford, England. Aside from these,
the Vice President has no other
landed properties on the form.
“Apart from his law firm, known as
SimmonsCooper, the Vice-President
also declared shareholding in six
private companies based in Lagos,
including Octogenerium Ltd., Windsor
Grant Ltd., Tarapolsa, Vistorion Ltd.,
Aviva Ltd. and MTN Nigeria.
“His personal vehicles are one Infinity
4-Wheel Drive SUV, one Mercedes
Benz and a Prado Jeep.
“As soon as the CCB is through with
the process, the documents will be
released to the Nigerian public and
people can see for themselves,” Mr
Shehu said.
