Same principle with subsidy on petrol  - to lower price and relative to the standard of living  - We have all the seen the 100% increase in cost of everything with wages remaining stagant.  We should be careful not to compare western economics to what we have in Nigeria.   In the Nigerian context everything revolves round oil at this point in time.
Dude,
Only the importers and smugglers of petrol benefit from petrol subsidy, it does not add up at all, u are only concern with buying cheap petrol and not to grow the economy, aint u still stagnant?, Antwerp has one of the biggest petrol refinary and petrol chemical industries in europe, yet they don't havea single oil well, do u know how many people that earn a living from it?, I expect other policies to come on stream to mandate oil companies to built refinaries in Nigeria, that is how we could benefit from our oil. China have the biggest iron ore reserve in the whole world yet company find it difficult to buy iron ore from china unless they site their company in china to have easy access the raw material, u get the joke in?

Even statistic shows that saudi arabia is groaning under their subsidy too.

Of course, to you bigots, everything is GEJ's fault, he caused all problems and created the satan in your backyard. Rubbish.
Nigeria has been a failed state since 2006, I guess GEJ arranged that too. I wonder how you think you sound when saying such things.

The argument above does not make social welfare or agriculture consumptive parts of the economy, so your points are still off on a tangent. More than anything, your post shows why the occupy jamboree is a failure.
Fact is, we need more of such policies that we get the citizens to be more inventive in thinking and cutting their coat according to their size, an average nigerian believe government is suppose to provide him with riches without working for it, its does not happen anywhere.

last year most european countries started with eco-subsidy for whoever that buy a new generation vehicle and give the old one back to the scrap yard, everyone rushed to buy new vehicle,  all in the name of increasing the the dwindling production of modern vehicle to boost employment and save the vehicle industry from bankruptcy. And as well improved the Co2 pollution from vehicles.

Oloshi - U don prove say u no get brain

Are you aware that there is agric subsidy in Amercia and Europe. You think they can compete with farms in africa and asia without subsidy. The Uk government pays roughly 5 billion pounds yearly to subsidy rail and bus transport network.

Your first class environment must be rubbish.
You just rubbished yourself with your comment, european governments subsidise the farmers that produced crops/rear animals and not the prices in the supermarkets for the consumers, the subsidy for the farmers lowers the price they sells to the supermarkets, do u know how many workers that subsidy will employ to produce those crops?

Animals rearer protested in brussel recently asking for increase in price for their cow milk and pig meat because the supermarkets increased their prices due to inflation, is that consumption?

I do believe you are a stooge, I may be wrong but it is my belief.
Dude,
Yes, western europe where I am have excellent working public mass transit, I think Nigeria could take a cue from country like Turkey that operate excellent private/individual mass transit as obtainable in Nigeria, with affordable prices and dependable.

The problem with Nigeria is the quick fix , copy and paste syndroom, we should learn how to develope and innovating what we have.

Dude,
U should thank God the decision to remove subsidy is coming sooner than later, sensible economy subsidise production and not consumption, We all envy Europe and America, did u think they got there by subsidizing consumption?, it's a waste.
PoliticsReasons "occupynigeria" Will Fail. by omanzo02(op): 10:09pm On Jan 06, 2012
The ill thought "occupynigeria" over subsidy removal will fail because;

1.The petrol subsidy removal is a government policy to enhance and guide decisions to achieve a rational outcome, and any unfortunate person that take law into his hand could be arrested or shot without any reservation.

2. I expect nigerians to storm the street/protest on corruption, institutional decay, security, poor leadership and intergrity of office holders, but in this case it's none of the above.

3. We are protesting for the wrong reason(s) or better put 'foolish activism'.

4. The caption "occupynigeria" is a copywrite, we can do better if we define our own form of aggitation/uprising.

I'm glad this government has been the most critised and perceived as the most controversial, such government always make progress and pushes changes through.

We should all consider the fact that this government is taking the bull by the horn to rectify the nonsense done by past governments that wasted money on subsidising consumption because they were afraid of changes.

The time for awuf run bele is over else Nigeria will remain backward economically and that will spur aggitation for disintegration.

Do u all know that diesel vehicle are more economical and durable than petrol?, there are more diesel vehicles on european roads than petrol too.

S/African police invade Nigerian embassy •Siege may lead to diplomatic row between both countries

Written by Stephen Gbadamosi with agency report
Sunday, 04 December 2011

If necessary steps are not taken, a disagreement over visa refusal to some South Africans

in Johannesburg during the week may develop into a major diplomatic row between Nigeria and South Africa.

According to a South African newspaper, Saturday Star, some members of a local church had accused the Nigerian Consulate staff of demanding bribes from them before they could be granted visa to the country.

Although the Nigerian Consulate, according to the visa denial victims, hinged the refusal on its inability to verify that the Twelve Apostles Church in Christ to which the 68 members belonged was duly registered in Nigeria, the South Africans insisted that they were treated so because they did not give bribe.

They were said to be travelling to Nigeria to attend an annual prayer meeting of the church in Nigeria and that they had booked for air tickets and accommodation with a sum of R500, 000. They also claimed that their passports were returned with cancelled visas on them.

According to Saturday Star, a member of the church delegation, Thami Khanyile, said they were bluntly asked to pay the bribe before their visas were issued. She said a consulate official told them that staff had been sweating over 68 visas “for nothing.”

“When we stated that we were not willing to pay a bribe, the officials reacted angrily and proceeded to revoke the visas which had already been issued on our passports. They told us that the Nigerian church which we were visiting did not provide them with a genuine certificate that our church was registered. We saw this as a ploy to try and solicit bribe from us.

“We called the police to come to our rescue because they refused to hand our passports back.

“We wanted to open a case, but we were advised to take this through international relations,” Khanyile was quoted to have said.

However, reports had it that the arrival of heavily armed policemen from Bramley police station was to aggravate the drama as upon being denied access by consular officials, they attempted force entry and tried to scale the electric fence. The local newspaper also published CCTV camera pictures of the policemen arguing with security staff and officials of the embassy in their bid to gain entry into the premises.

Sources at the consular were quoted to have said the church members had tried to stage an “illegal sit in” at the consulate after they were told to return the next day with additional documents.

“Police ordered the guard on duty to open the gate and when he refused, they threatened to gain entry by force,” the source was quoted.

Another source was quoted: “They acted in violation of diplomatic protocols and will have to answer serious questions for invading Nigeria.”

However, the local paper reported that the spokesman for the Department of International Relations, Clayson Monyela, commented that the department would raise the issues through diplomatic channels with its counterpart.

Also, the spokesperson of the South African Police (SAPS), Captain Dennis Adriao, was quoted as saying that the organisation would investigate, “once official complaint” was received, adding that “the SAPS respects international diplomatic protocols and any violation of these protocols will be seen in serious light.”

Now that some EU countries are broke, they are all looking for new investment and other means of revenue, so I don't think Nigeria would lack candidate to replace shell.

TravelFg's Reduction Of British Airways Flights To Nigeria Generates Ripples by omanzo02(op): 5:18pm On Nov 04, 2011
The Federal Government’s reduction of the frequency of British Airways flights to Lagos, Nigeria from seven to three, has caught the attention of the British government.

The issue has started generating ripples in the aviation sector.

The Federal Government had, through the Minister of Aviation, Stella Adaeze Oduah, announced that it had cut down on the British carrier’s frequency.

Prior to the reduction which took off from Tuesday, November 8, British Airways was operating 14 frequencies into Nigeria through Abuja and Lagos airports.

The reduction may not be unconnected with the allegation by a Nigerian carrier, Arik Air, that the British Civil Aviation Authority (BCAA) denied it of landing rights on its Abuja/London Heathrow route in line with Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) signed by the Nigerian and British governments.

The denial of the landing slot to Arik Air which has forced it to suspend its flights to London/Heathrow from Abuja may have forced government to wield the big stick against British Airways.

Reacting, the British carrier, in a statement said, ”the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has restricted British Airways flights to Lagos from next week. They have cited operational reasons for this imposition. It appears that British Airways is the only airline to be singled out by these restrictions. We are doing all we can to resolve this issue.”

In its defence, British Airways said: “The distribution of the slots at Heathrow is managed through an independent organisation, Airport Coordination Ltd. ACL manages slot allocation in a fair and transparent manner, where all airlines have the opportunity to be involved.”

PoliticsDeregulation: How Gej Stopped Kerosene Deregulation by omanzo02(op): 1:56pm On Oct 23, 2011
It emerged at the weekend that President Goodluck Jonathan practically tore down arguments of members of the Economic Management Team(EMT) to defend the decision to retain subsidy on kerosene starting from January.
Sources in the administration confirmed that the EMT had argued that all forms of subsidies on all petroleum products should go in the New Year as a way of saving the nation’s dwindling investment in infrastructural development.

The decision to stop the deregulation of kerosene in 2012 is said to be one of the safety nets already prepared for the different segments of the Nigerian society in the planned deregulation exercise.

Sources said that technocrats in government had prepared details which indicated that government was subsidising every litre of kerosene with as much as N85 and that government could save more than N100 billion from the product alone if the expenses are properly harnessed.

The technocrats had indicated that by removing subsidy on petrol, government could save N1.2 trillion, which could then be directly ploughed into infrastructural development.

While that decision has been incorporated into the Medium-Term Economic Framework (MTEF) submitted to the National Assembly by President Jonathan, government had been silent on the subsidy on kerosene until last week when the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Allinson-Madueke, announced on the floor of the National Assembly that President Jonathan insisted that the subsidy on kerosene must remain.

Sources confirmed that President Jonathan had to set aside all economic indices put forward by the economic team to insist on kerosene subsidy.

A source close to the administration said: “The President insisted that kerosene is the only fuel that the poor people rely on for domestic use. He insisted that in the creeks of Niger Delta and the deserts of Borno, most of the people cannot toy with the luxury of using firewood and that they are condemned to use kerosene as the only means of cooking. He insisted that the class of people using kerosene are the real people government must support.”

With an estimated 10 million per day use of kerosene, the nation’s economic managers had insisted that Nigeria was losing close to N850 million per day to subsidise the product and that in a year, the expenses could rise to as much as N300 billion.

With these words David Cameron defined a strong and weak leader.

Mr Cameron added: "A strong leader actually recognises you have to take time to get all the information, answer all the questions, and then actually make a decision.

"A weak leader is someone who jumps at it because of some artificial deadline. Let's get the facts established, and then we'll make a decision."

These are exactly the pattern GEJ has been trying to introduce in our political system, still we prefered the du.mb.as,s military gragra system that has created monster out of many nigerians and politicians.

Now that Cameron most of us hold in higher esteem have justified GEJ approach to issues, who is now the real retaaarrdeen/odechukwu, GEJ or U/we?.

AP Interview: Arrests made against Nigeria sect

By JON GAMBRELL - Associated Press

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria -- Security forces have arrested a top commander of a radical Muslim sect who is accused of orchestrating attacks in the country's northeast that have left police, clerics and others dead, a governor said Wednesday.

Borno state Gov. Kashim Shettima told The Associated Press in an interview at his heavily guarded office that officials believe a negotiated peace can be reached with the sect known locally as Boko Haram.

However, he warned that those involved in the group who continue the sect's sectarian campaign of assassinations and bombings will be hunted down by the increasing military and police presence in his state.

"I believe the worst is over," Shettima said, adding that five others also were arrested and are being detained.

Shettima, a governor under the regional All Nigeria People's Party, came to power in the nation's April elections. In the time since, Boko Haram has launched a wave of attacks in and around Maiduguri, a dusty city in Nigeria's far northeast that borders with Cameroon, Chad and Niger, as well as the Sahara Desert.

The violence became so bad that university officials canceled classes in the town, and authorities banned all motorcycles since the group uses them to launch their attacks.

Now, soldiers in flak jackets and helmets sit behind sandbagged barriers along major roads, intersections and buildings, armed with heavy machines guns.

That presence, as well as other measures, have cut down violence in the city, Shettima said. Investigation by military and the police recently saw authorities arrested the man responsible for planning and orchestrating attacks around the city, the governor said.

Five others also were arrested and are being held by military and the police, Shettima said.

Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege," came to prominence in July 2009 when its members rioted in Maiduguri. The riots and an ensuing military crackdown left 700 people dead and the group's mosque in ruins.

The group, which wants strict implementation of Shariah law across Nigeria, re-emerged last year to carry out shootings and bombings.

Boko Haram maintains a loose command-and-control structure, allowing different groups to operate autonomously from each other, Shettima said.

"They operate in some sort of cells, some sort of units that interlinked, but generally they take directives from one commander," he said.

While mainly focused on local issues, Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the Aug. 26 car bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Nigeria that killed 23 people and wounded another 116. The commander for U.S. military operations in Africa has said that Boko Haram may be trying to coordinate attacks with al-Shabab of Somalia and north African group al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb.

While Shettima and others say progress is being made, residents of Maiduguri largely refuse to talk about the security situation in public. Privately, they say they remain scared of both Boko Haram and the security agencies, who have been accused of brutality in their new crackdown against the sect.

Nigeria, a nation of 150 million people, is split largely between a Christian south and a Muslim north. Unemployment and unceasing poverty, coming despite the nation making billions a year from oil production, have increased resentment in recent years in the north. Boko Haram tapped into that unrest, something the governor acknowledged.

"A political problem needs a political solution," Shettima said.
