The intuition here is that, holding other factors constant,a bad news on any economy and therefore currency will cause the currency to weaken against other currencies. So, if there is any bad news in the US, its indices will fall against an otherwise constant or strengthening GBP or EU. Keep in mind that for this to happen, there must not be any negative news on the other currencies.
