Few days after flood ravaged part of Niger State and its environs, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) yesterday in Abuja ordered an immediate evacuation of people living along the River Niger plains. Areas surrounding River Niger, stretching from Kainji Dam to Jebba have been on constant threat of an impending flood and other environmental hazard in recent times. According to NEMA officials, “this alert comes because the dams have attained their highest water levels in 29 years which is unprecedented in the history of Jebba and Kainji hydroelectric power dams. The threat has created a high risk of imminent flooding in the downstream of the river.” NEMA, Head of Public Relations, Yushau Shuaib said: “The residents ofthe communities are urged to move to higher grounds for safety. The states at risk of the flood are Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Kebbi, Anambra and Delta.” He further explained that, “already the agency has notified the affected states to take the necessary precautionary measures by relocatingpeople from the flood prone areas and activated the National Contingency Plan as well as alerted allstakeholders to take necessary actions in line with their various mandates. The states are to ensure compliance with the threat in order to avert imminent loss of lives and properties that would certainly arise in the event of flooding.” Also, information available to THISDAY indicates that the gauge for monitoring the flow of water in the river has already exceeded the maximum height by over one meter. A rapid assessment team comprising officers of NEMA and the stakeholders has left for Jebba and Kainji to further inspect the situation. The assessment is expected to bring out further details on how residents can be spared of the devastating effects should the flood occurhttp://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/nema-orders-immediate-evacuation-as-river-niger-attains-highest-level/124638/ |

A total of 88 babies were born duringthe just-concluded seven-day 60th convention of The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), themed “Come Up Higher,” which ended last Sunday. General Overseer of the church, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, whose divine appointment was reaffirmed by the Governing Council of the church during the farewell service held on Sunday, made the announcement, saying that out of the 88 babies, 44 were boys and girls 44, as of 7.30 a.m on Sunday. Meanwhile, to defuse the rumour making the round that Pastor Adeboye, who clocked 70 in March, was contemplating resignation from the headship of the mission, the Governing Council of the mission, through one of its elders last Sunday, passed a vote of confidence on the General Overseer of the church. Good leadership and prosperity are eluding African nations, according to the elder, because the people usually reject the will of God in selecting their leaders, saying that was not thecase in RCCG. “In RCCG, God has given us a leader who obeys Him. All machinations to plunge the church into leadership crisis will not stand. RCCG has been established forever. Bythe grace of God, those that will take over from us have been trainded and are still being trained. As the appointment of Pastor Adeboye is divine, God will help him to appoint his successor when the time comes; when it will be time for Daddy to go, he will go,” the elder stated to the resounding applause of the attentive congregation.http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/45847-88-babies-born-in-one-week-at-rccg-60th-convention |

olugbemi4u: I think the wave of disintergration has started under the leadership of President Jonathan because of inability to do the thing as d right.nIGERIA IS IN SHAMBLE AND WOOBLEjust as time and chance had it that Pontius Pilate would authorize the crucification of Christ, so it is for GEJ. The thick wave of disintegration has long spread through the foundations of Nigeria. It did not begin today. That is not to exonerate GEJ from the part he is currently playing....or will likely play....if he fails to summon courage and do what is right. |

How about Monitoring & Evaluation? Who will monitor the mothers to make sure they are br.ea.stfeeding? THE Federal Government, yesterday, said it was considering sending a bill to the National Assembly, which would promote and make breast feeding compulsory for all nursing mothers in the country.http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/08/fg-considers-bill-on-compulsory-breast-feeding/ |
