Strike Will Improve Education Sector – ASUU. http:// www.nairaland.com/1452220/strike-improve-education-sector-ASUU |
The President, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Nasir Fagge, said on Tuesday that the current strike by lecturers of public universities in the country was a sacrifice for better things to come. Fagge told Journalists in Lagos that unless the deficits in the education sector, especially the university system, were addressed once and for all, there would be no development. Lecturers, under the aegis of ASUU, had on June 30 embarked on what it had described as comprehensive, total and indefinite strike in public universities across the country. The lecturers are asking for the implementation of some aspects of an agreement they jointly entered into with the Federal government in 2009. According to Fagge, it is regrettable that the strike is protracted, and that the decision of ASUU to remain adamant until its demands are fully met can seem uncomfortable and worrisome. He said that the industrial action was a sacrifice needed to salvage the entire economy of the country. “I sincerely want to call on all concerned, especially students and parents, to bear with us, as well as join hands with us in the struggle to right the wrongs in our education sector once and for all, for the good of us all and that of the country. “I know it is quite a difficult time for us but I also want to state that what we are doing is for our own good, as well as ensure that strikes become rare, as a weapon to get things done in our system. “We also want to ensure that there is sincerity and respect for mutual agreements by parties in order to attain a common goal for the good of our dear country,” he said. Fagge, however, lauded the supervising education Minister, Chief Nyesom Wike, for finding time to meet with the Executive Committee of ASUU, in a bid to find a lasting solution to the protracted strike. The unionist also commended the Committee of Vice- Chancellors and other stakeholders for their concern in attempts to end the strike. He noted that such was the spirit needed to ensure that nobody felt cheated and that what the lecturers were asking for was truly for the advancement of the course of the country. According to Fagge, with the current attempts by the various stakeholders, he is optimistic that there will soon be a mutual understanding between the parties. “I think with the various meetings we have held with the concerned stakeholders, I am optimistic that there will soon be a way out and our demands met, so that in the shortest possible time, we will get the required development that will make us compete favourably within the comity of nations. “For us in the academic communities, we strongly wish government should look into the deficit of insincerity in our system, teaching facilities, in order for us to be able to deliver on our mandate. “Majority of our children and wards in this country do attend these public universities and we cannot afford to fold our hands and watch them study under deplorable conditions, while those who can afford sending their children abroad feel little or no concern about it,” he said. On the appointment of ministers to replace the recently sacked ones, Fagge suggested that it should be hinged strictly on the basis of merit. “We need people who will come in with confidence of the power that be in terms of tackling challenges; be up and doing and would always want to come up with new approaches to addressing problems,” he said. Should they call off this strike now, most universities will rush the academic calendar in order to meet up thereby, rolling out half baked mofos into the society... Three months of quality education lost! Chai... I weep for this country. The most painful part is that Jonathan is seriously, campaigning for 2015 while matters that need urgent attention are relegated to the background!sori pls is it rung for somwan to speak pidgin?? In response to the rumors that she was allegedly collecting money from people for entry into a talent hunt show, actress Uche Jumbo has come out to deny the rumors. In a statement she revealed: “I am shocked and appalled at the extent some evil perpetrators can go to tarnish my image by impersonating me to collect money from innocent people for a talent hunt I know nothing about. Let me state in clear terms here, I am not in anyway involved in any talent hunt, I am an actor and a producer and I am committed to my trade and career, I will never do anything to destroy what I have laboured for so many years with my own hands. It was gathered that Chief Emmanuel had paid her bride last year after his wife of more than 40 years, Lady Eudora, with whom he had three sons and five daughters, died on 28 August 2011, aged 63. According to a family source, "he was distraught when his wife died and wanted to marry her immediately but was convinced by his kinsmen to wait for a while". Though his children are not in support of the marriage, they have to go along with it as they have been warned by their father to either accept it and co-operate or be cut off, a source revealed. With the traditional wedding out of the way, the church wedding will hold on September 21st, 2013 and they will be wedded by Rt Rev. Emmanuel Maduwuike, Bishop of Ikeduru Diocese of Anglican Communion at the Bishop’s chapel by 10am.

This news is as culled from Channels TV: Desperate to halt a probe into his finances, governor James Ibori tried to bribe former anti-corruption boss Nuhu Ribadu in 2007 with $15 million in cash in a bag so heavy one man alone could not lift it, Ribadu told a London court on Thursday. Ribadu said he pretended to take the bribe because he wanted the cash as evidence to use against Ibori in a prosecution, but rather than keep the money for himself he had it taken straight to the Central Bank of Nigeria to be kept safe in a vault. Continue.. Ribadu told the court that about $1 billion flowed from federal government accounts into Delta State coffers during Ibori’s eight years in power, and he estimated Ibori had stolen or wasted more than half of that amount. The charges to which Ibori pleaded guilty amount to the theft of about $80 million, but British prosecutors say that was only part of his total booty, which was kept hidden via a complex web of shell companies, offshore accounts and front men. Ribadu, who was chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from April 2003 to December 2007, was giving evidence at a confiscation hearing in which prosecutors are seeking court orders to have Ibori’s assets seized. Under Nigeria’s constitution, state governors enjoy immunity from prosecution but are limited to two terms in office. With the end of his second term looming in April 2007, Ibori was worried the EFCC were planning to prosecute him, Ribadu said. “He was very desperate to terminate the investigation,” he told the court. In late April 2007, a meeting was arranged between the two men at a “neutral place”, the house of Andy Uba, a close associate of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Ibori arrived at the house with several members of his staff and a very large black sack containing $15 million in cash. Ribadu said he watched as two of Ibori’s men lifted the heavy sack and handed it over to his own EFCC staff. “It was a bag that an individual could not carry alone,” he said. The EFCC men drove the bag to the central bank where the money was counted and boxed into smaller containers. The court was shown photographs of the boxes of cash. “I have given you money Nuhu, just give me my clearance,” Ribadu quoted Ibori as telling him after those events. Instead, the EFCC continued to investigate Ibori’s affairs and had him arrested on corruption charges on December 12, 2007. It will be recalled that the Delta state government had approached the court asking that the money belonged to the state government and should therefore be returned to the state. The EFCC are however opposed to the return of the money to the state. The EFCC says that “that the said sum of $15 Million cannot be traced to any account owned or being operated by the Delta State Government or any of its agencies and officials”. |

He has all the riches he could ever dream for in this life. But to avoid any risk of missing out in the afterlife, wealthy entrepreneur ‘Count Scarpa’ is burying his greatest treasure – his new £310,000 Bentley convertible. In a bizarre announcement on his Facebook page the 62-year-old declared that he plans to do as the Pharaohs of Egypt did and take his riches with him when he dies by burying them. So tomorrow, he will entomb his brand new Bentley Continental worth over £310,000 to make sure he has a comfortable journey into the ‘other side’. The funeral ceremony, he promises, will be at 11am. In a photo on his social network site Count Scarpa stands beside his black Flying Spur, the latest model on the market, with a cockatoo on his arm and writes: ‘I decided to do as the Pharaohs: this week I will bury my favourite car, the Bentley here in the home garden! Bury my treasure in my palace rssss !!!’ He says he’s digging the grave in the back garden of his mansion in Jardins, one of the wealthiest neighbourhoods in Sao Paulo. On Tuesday, in another photo, sporting a pink tie, with his foot on a shovel, he stands in front of a deep hole with his shining Bentley parked behind him and warns: ‘For those who doubt me, yesterday I already started making the hole in the garden to bury my Bentley! By the end of the week I will bury it’ The self-made businessman, who has a degree in economics and is a black belt instructor and owner of the Institute Maruyama Aikido, a Japanese martial arts academy, explains that his decision to start storing up his treasures for the life beyond came after watching a programme on Ancient Egypt on Sunday. ‘I was watching a documentary about the pharaohs of Egypt, very interesting. They buried his entire fortune to have a comfortable life “the other side”!’ he says.

A mother, Vicky Griffiths, has spoken of her shock after she gave birth to a baby girl with two fully formed front teeth. According to her, she was so shocked that even though she had planned to breastfeed her little baby before giving birth, she changed her mind after seeing the newborn’s teeth. The new baby Eva Faith astounded nurses and midwives as well as her family when she was born. DailyMail reports that initially, nobody realised and it was only when Mrs Griffiths went to have a bath after giving birth that her husband Steven spotted the teeth in his daughter’s lower jaw. Mrs Griffiths, a 26-year-old child minder, said: ‘When I came back into the room Steven said, “she’s got teeth, you know! We were in shock, and so were the midwives. She had her mouth closed to begin with, so we didn’t notice. It was quite bizarre to see them. I kept asking the midwives and nurses what I could give Eva if she was in pain, but nobody was able to answer me. They just kept going away and then coming back with more people to look at Eva’s teeth. Nobody could believe it. When we came out of hospital I went to see my GP and he said that he had never heard of this happening before. Midwives with 25-years’ experience were also saying they’d never seen it. She added: ‘I had been planning to breastfeed, but when I saw Eva’s teeth I was put off. I don’t think anybody could blame me!’ Little Eva Faith was born on September 8 and is now at home with her parents and older sisters Elizabeth, seven, and Emily, five, in Redcar, Cleveland. Share
