Education / Re: FG Condemns ASUU's Fresh Demands by onyeka205(m): 6:28pm On Nov 26, 2013
~PreciousBro~:
I think ASUU should have a review at their unscrupulous demands and see if it doesn't brew Greed,Selfishness and nonchalance.

They are bunch of thieves as far as I'm concerned, how can they ask for salaries for work they didn't do, it just goes to show the degree of transparent corruption we're seeing now in this nation.

Isn't the strike a means of sacrifice to yield better result ? Now who will compensate the students haven stayed away from school for almost a year ? If they truly care for this nation and the movement of a better Educational system as the portray, then they should see it as it is, and deal with the loss of no pay due to no work"

If I must educate you on how things work in the university system, the lost months must be recovered by the university authority that's why ASUU is asking for the payment. They will shorten the semesters and have just one week holiday inbetween semesters. The president knows about this and the money is already with the VCs, what is required is a circular and they will release the money. Forget all about politics, the FG will pay the money but they want to just paint ASUU black before releasing the money. The other demands are in line with the discussion they had with the president. The person that was complaining is the Minister of education and not the president. The message is meant for the president and not for the minister. The president will accept the conditions and the strike will be called off soonest so don't panic.

Segeggs: They want their 4 months salaries paid to them but who will replace the 4 months they made nigerian students to lose?

If they ever get paid that money, they will never spend it on anything reasonable.

When schools resumes finally, so also will their google search, plagiarism, sale of hand-outs at huge costs, sleeping with female students, runs and bribery, absence from class, chasing students out of their offices, failing students, demi-god attitude and their poor english.

Who will save students from the above?

If all these you listed here are being done by your lecturers, that your institution should be shut down permanently becuase I don't think there is any remedy to your institution's sitation.

Many of them are empty headed, most of my lecturers use out dated notes, some dont come to class at all, buh de will set exams, i ask some of my lecturers questions and they tremble, stammer even dodge d question . Tell me how all dis huge sums am hearing will change all of this,. The fact is u can't give wat u don't have. I no fg aint sincere buh dis lecturers own na im worst pass, dem for talk say dem de find as dem go carry chop for d national cake instead of all dis poo. Abeg no vex if ur papa or mama na lecturer o, i just talk my mind
ITS BAD

All these things you mentioned did you pay them to the lecturers or the school authority? If ASUU members collect school fees in your school, I don't think that they do in other universities in Nigeria. Up to 70% of lecturers in your school are incompetent, what a pity. The implication is that they'll pass the incompetence to you and this is why ASUU is on strike, to be able to attract the best brains for your study. The best brains will not come unless there is condusive environment. But if I may ask, Which university do you attend? That university should be closed down if all you wrote here are true.

If what you wrote here was what you were taught, then you need to go back to school. This is the very reason why ASUU went on strike so that they will cease to produce graduates like you.

If ASUU's sister union can be saying this, what do you think ASUP, COEASU, NUT, etc will be saying if the FG should dance to ASUU's tune, i fear o, because, definitely, they too will demand for a better pay, which is not going to be favourable to Nigeria's educational system.

The one they are asking the FG to implement is so stringent that the FG will not attempt to do that. They are in support of ASUU but want the FG to implement the one that will include their welfare and not the one that will be for the welfare of ASUU alone. The FG could not implement that that's why they decided to have MOU with ASUU to water down the demands.

bamto: This is how Plan B will work- that's if this news is for real.

Managements will open register for as many lecturers are willing to resume work. Others will be relieved, and vacancies put up. New lecturers will be appointed and wholla, sanity will be restored.

Meanwhile, disgruntled aggrieved sacked lecturers will sue FG to court. The case will be decided in their favor but appealed till it gets to the supreme court. That will be about 10-12years from now. Ask Ilorin 49.

Those that would be employed would form another ASUU only to start another strike by next year. You can see that sacking lecturers and employing others is not the solution to the problem. Conversely, all the lecturers will go back to class and school fees would be raised to N200,000. This is the option the FG is giving the lecturers. They may accept that option.

All you need to become a senator is to do one dirty deal and become a millionaire and off you go, while becoming a professor will take you almost 15 -20years of active research and publication in a peer reviewed journal.

vizboy: hunger don dey come small small. Make fg continue like that. NO WORK NO PAY

They are all emploayable in private universities and most of them are there now on sabbatical leave, some have even travelled abroad and most of them are in business. Note that the August salary has just been paid and the released #30b has been disbursed to lecturers. The money is three times the monthly salary of the lecturers so it can last till January next year. Remember that all the salaries owed would be paid as soon as the strike is called off. The students should persuade the FG to listen to ASUU because at the end of the day, it is only students that will lose.

Allohrandy: FG should stop paying them their salary

Salaries have been stopped since August but it cannot make ASUU to call off the strike. Before going on strike, they already know that the salaries would be stopped so they were prepared for it. Most ASUU members are on one year sabbatical leave in some industries and most have travelled abroad. Those remaining are the ones that have some businesses and are currently giving their businesses 100% attention. The strike is planned to last for three years as was done in Ghana and the members are aware of this. The best thing the FG should do for the sake of the students is to implement the agreement. Remember that when the strike is called off, all salaries owed will be paid in bulk.
Education / ASUU Strike: Serap Drags Fg To Un Body Over Failure To Meet ASUU’s Demands by onyeka205(m): 5:28am On Oct 28, 2013
Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has dragged the government of President Goodluck Jonathan to the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights over “a serious breach of the obligations by Nigeria under the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights to progressively realize the right to education in accordance with the country’s maximum available resources.”

The group said: “This fundamental breach is due primarily to the persistent refusal by the government to honour their agreement with members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).”

In the petition dated 25 October 2013 and signed by SERAP Executive Director, Adetokunbo Mumuni, the group said: “Although the government in 2009 agreed with ASUU to improve the governance structures and funding for the operation of universities across the country to around 26% for the period covering 2009-2020, the terms of the agreement have remained largely unfulfilled.

“Conditions of service for staff members of the country’s universities remain very poor. Further the right of the students to freedom of assembly and association is not fully and effectively respected by the authorities.”

The petition sent to the committee through the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms Navi Pillay, also stated that, “under international law, Nigeria is required to demonstrate that, in aggregate, the measures being taken are sufficient to realize the right to education for Nigerian children in the shortest possible time using the maximum available resources.”

“However, the continuing refusal by the government to honour agreements with ASUU constitutes a fundamental breach of these obligations, and shows lack of good faith by the government to implement its voluntary international commitments,” the group argued.

According to the group: “One of the best financial investments states can make is education but the Nigerian government’s investment on education for many years has been only a drop in the ocean especially when measured in the light of the country’s accrued revenue from oil, and its maximum available resources. No wonder, then, that the government has persistently failed to improve the infrastructural and academic environment at all levels of education in the country.

“This situation is inconsistent with the letter and spirit of the Covenant as well as the Committee’s own jurisprudence.”

The group called on the Committee to “demand that the Nigerian government should urgently and fully implement its agreement with ASUU, and ensure sufficient funding of universities across the country. The Committee should put pressure on the government to promote, protect and fulfil the right to education for the sake of millions of Nigerian children that continue to be denied this fundamental human right.”

The group argued that: “Education is not only a human right in itself but also an indispensable means of realizing other human rights. It is the primary vehicle by which economically and socially marginalized adults and children can lift themselves out of poverty and obtain the means to participate fully in their communities. Education also has a vital role in empowering women, safeguarding children from exploitative and hazardous labour and sexual exploitation, promoting human rights and democracy, and protecting the environment.

“As the Committee has stated, states must take deliberate, concrete and targeted steps as clearly as possible towards meeting the obligations recognized in the Covenant. But the persistent refusal by the government to sufficiently fund the country’s universities, and honour its own agreement to ASUU is a deliberate retrogressive measure, and shows lack of good faith,” the group insisted.

According to the group: “Although states are given a margin of discretion’ in the assessment of what resources are available, they nonetheless must utilise the maximum available resources to achieve the full realization of the right to education. SERAP contends that the refusal by the government to sufficiently fund the universities in accordance with its maximum available resources cannot be justified on any ground whatsoever.”

Don Magic Juan: FG should not only stop their salaries but also evict any occupying staff quarters and also give them 30 days ultimatum to return back to work or get the sack.

Enuff is enuff!

The FG should do all these so that you can return to class and be fed with trash while their children are in better universities abroad acquiring better skills. Nigeria spends about N160billion anually to acquire better education in Ghana. Ghana was on strike for 3yrs and got their educational system on a right footing and today Nigerians are spending heavily to acquire a better education in Ghana. Why can't Nigeria get theirs right so that other countries would be trooping into Nigeria to acquire a qualitative education? This is why ASUU is on strike and needs the support of everyboby.

Don't be deceived, most lecturers have picked adjunct appointments in private universities and those that have businesses have faced their businesses. Even if the strike lasts for three years, it will only affect the students. It is high time the students started appealing to the FG to heed to the demands of ASUU. Some of the lecturers have gone on sabbatical abroad and may not even return back even when the strike is called off.

Please could you suggest any other method that can be used to get the FG to implement the 2009 agreement.

ikp4succes: Solution to Assu Strike: Govt should remove thier hand from the Education sector let the universities run by themselves or privatized. The money you will give Assu give students as loan to go to these universities, you can calculate how much the student parent's can afford then give loan for the remainder, the one that is smart u give them scholarship. Students will pay back when they find a job in their field, and you can setup an installment plan depending on their income. The only thing Govt should do is regulate the school fees and give money to schools that does research...that's all. ASUU will dissolve. The professor/lecture will only have to sign Contract with university they will only have problem with the university if they are not paid. Universities can lay off lecturers if they cannot afford. I promise you within 10 years, two universities in Nigeria will enter ranking and compete with Western Universities.

This will lead to more brain drain and you will have nobody to teach you. The school fees, if not hiked astronomically, some universities will close down.

Shobayo Emma: when the fg entered into agreement with ASUU in 2009, there was no stipulated time for the total implementation of the deal. now fg has given sumtin for a start; i think it wil be an honourary thing for ASUU to resume also for a start and then ask d fg to giv them a particular time frame to meet all thier demands. through dis nigerians can now stand for thier course if fg then fails. GOD BLESS NIGERIA.

There was a definite time of implementation which is suppose to start from 2009, N100b per year and that is how the figure of N500b funding was arrived at. If the Government had honoured that agreement, there would have been a review this year as was agreed and signed by both parties. This issue of earned allowances was calculated by a Government agency and they arrived at N87b as at this year and ASUU is saying that since non of the agreements had been implemented since 2009, there is no indication that the remaining money would be remitted if they call of the strike without achieving their aim. This would lead to another strike in the near future. ASUU wants to avert this by making sure that the agreement is fully implemented before they will go back to class.

Billyonaire: Federal Government should declare State of Emergency on Federal Universities, then:

Makes sure that:
1. University MUST pay lecturers from its internally generated revenue while Government provides infrastructures.

2. Lecturers salaries be fixed by respective schools based on their IGR.

3. That quota system be abolished and every student has right to enroll in any University he can afford.

4. That State Universities have no rights to go on strike with Federal Government cos they have no business with Federal.

5. Lecturers must know that it is not possible for them to own private jets, but if their desire is to become overtly rich, they should quit classroom and join politics.

6. NANS should be banned.

So politician are the ones that have the legal right to own private jets in Nigeria?

I am now a 300level university student. Most of what I remember in my 100 level scheme were what I read on my own.

Our primary school teachers are far better than most of our university lecturers when it comes to imparting knowledge.

The big question is WHO should receive more pay?? UNIVERSITY LECTURERS OR PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS? Who should embark on indefinite industrial strike action as a result of unpaid earned allowances?

Don't expect a lecturer to start teaching as if you are still in primary school. You are now an adult and what you should receive are lectures. So lecturers lecture, they don't teach.

Appliedmaths.:

I totally understand you, but you see the way ASUU go about their plight is so unprofessional; they're not illiterates so they should be able to draft out an effective plan to table out their complains. When ASUU goes on strike the students stay @ home helpless, FG becomes troubled but deep down these ASUU guys are on a no-work holiday which they'll still be paid for; most of them go to lecture in private schools that's double income in addition that which they'll receive after the strike has been called off. Recently the Nigerian army started th building process of a 5star hotel in enugu just as a means to diversify their source of income but ASUU are so clueless yet they claim to be professionals, this is disheartening my friend very sad.
We know the FG on their part are so clueless too, but what is the assurance that if FG releases the N500b or so to ASUU the educational system in Nigeria would improve?

The only language the Government understands is strike. ASUU has exploited other options since 2009 before opting for the strike action. Other options did not move the Gvernment. Meanwhile, ASUU is not asking that the N500b be given to them to spend, they are saying that the Govenment should fund the educational system with that amount. This money would be given to the governing council which are Government appointees and not ASUU. The money would be used to provide enough classrooms, seats, laboratory equipment and other teaching aids that will enhance the quality of education in Nigeria. The other one being demanded is for the earned allowances which were already stipulated by the Government but allowed to accumulate. This is the true situation in ASUU struggle.

ASUU did not wake up and give FG a demand. This agreement was signed since 2009 but the FG refused to honour the agreement. ASUU is insisting that this agreement be implemented to the letter. If ASUU accepts what the FG has offered so far, it means that we will experience another strike in the near future.

ASUU doesn't have power to increase school fees or any other fees in the university. All charges are being put by the university authority and not ASUU. They are demanding for their earned allowances and these cannot be unreasonable and not out of greed.

PHIPEX: I have been hearing of ASUU strike since I was a kid yet nothing good has come out of it. If the only instrument ASUU knows how to use in getting its demand is strike then am convinced that they have failed Nigeria students. I don't know the history of university development in developed countries but I doubt that they got there through strike actions (I stand to be corrected).

Students' time are wasted in school, some that have plans are frustrated in the name of strike yet at the end of it employers of labour will still place an age cap on their job adverts. If you have not been a victim you wouldn't understand how it feels to be an undergraduate in Nigeria.

Please suggest any other means you know ASUU can use to get the Federal Government to fulfil their agreement

D minister hasn't misquoted anybody because if d fg can pay 87 den they can pay N97B. Let ASUU stp being selfish n re-negtiate cos dis govt has greater chalenges dan d ones they held to ransome in 2009.

If you read the statement very well you will discover that ASUU is not demanding any extra money. The amount mentioned is an accumulation of already earned allowances that was not paid. Why would the Federal Gonernment pay the earned allowances of political office holders and leave that of others? Is Nigeria owned by political office holders or by all of us? What is the number of lecturers in Nigeria and what is the number of senators in Nigeria? Compare the amount mentioned and the total amount paid to 109 senators as allowances you will discover that the total allowances paid to 109 senators is far beyound N87B.

With a good development plan as stated below, Nigeria potentials will be maximised.

Mechanised Agriculture and Food Processing and Storage Plants (Agro and Allied Industries) in the North

Start-up/tech industries, Spare-parts manufacturing, trade and commerce in the East.

Oil and Gas / Petrochemicals in the South-South plus Tourism

Shipping, Banking and Finance in Lagos

High Tech industries, Agro and Allied industries, Medicals and Pharmaceuticals in the West.

The Elites, our Politicians and their front-linemen who stole and laundered our money overseas should be pardoned with a condition to reinvest them in Nigeria.

Strict Laws with great penalty should be enacted to deter Politicians from corruption while Public Office holders shouldn't earn more than academic Professors.

I think you really have the key, I am in support of your motion.
