I'm not in support of Nigerians abroad returning to Nigeria- don't get me wrong here.

I'm pointing out the Nigerian mentality of feeling too big just because they have a university education.

Being a doctor, lawyer or rocket scientist doesnt mean you can't sometimes do other things outside your field even if they appear menial. No one is saying a doctor should change to bricklaying as a full time occupation. But nothing wrong with a doctor getting into some other hobby either as a way to build his community or simply to unwind. there's nothing degrading in it and its not armed robbery.

In addition, doing some of your own housecleaning in Nigeria doesnt make you a househelp.

Nigeria clearly has a lot of infrastructural as well as technological needs.

Having a degree doesnt mean people should turn up their noses at working with their hands if need be. Thats one thing about developed countries and especially whites- they love doing blue collar work like carpentry, home repair,painting etc, no matter their level of education. They do these things as hobbies, volunteer work or simply as a way to unwind. Anyone assuming the big crowds at Lowe's and Home Depot are all uneducated people, is sadly mistaken.

Nigerians, on the other hand, would consider it a sign of madness if someone with plenty of university education, showed an interest in bricklaying or carpentry. If you are called a chief or have some kind of title, its even worse.

Achebe described this mentality in No Longer at Ease when people criticized Obi for turning up for a function in his shirtsleeves due to the hot weather,while everyone else was decked out and sweating in their expensive attire.

Returning home would be a very noble thing to do,but think about the crime and corruption,you almost can't afford to be an honest uncorrupted person.
Me and my father returned to Naija and he worked for a Governor who I will not name,he wuz hijacked at least 3 or 4 times that year alone, And I will let that story end there.

kobojunkie why are you acting like an illiterate ? did i say those folks never existed ? they do. they are the miniscule lucky minority. alot of nigerians got lucky during the IT boom of the early 2000 2001 2002 etc till IT got kind of saturated and outsourced to india. still folks in it but not like before. now if u were smart when you made ya IT money and invested it wisely like one of my friends who bought a pharmacy store and he now owns it, then you are made. ok but those folks are in the minority. take the train or bus to the city in the mornings and most of the city workers are white. take the train in the wee hours of the morning and evening when the city dwellers are going home or still in bed and majority of the people on are black nigerians. going to their security and cleaning work

onyinye you do not know what you are talking about. i lived in england for 10 years. 99 percent of nigerians in england don't own cars. they take the tube and bus. and that 300 pounds a week was a generous figure because i know alot earn about 7 pounds an hour. trust me nobody can tell me about london. that is my stomping ground. i am london. this is not no third party info. i lived it and saw thousands like me who lived it.
