Good afternoon Doc..My mum is always having sand in the eyes feeling and her eyes is red when she scratches her hand with her eyes….Pls what can be done about it…Thanks
with some eye drops, she can get relief from those symptoms. Unfortunately, i cannot prescribe online without assessing her. I advise you take her to an eye clinic to address her issue. Sorryi am replying late. I just got to see this

Hello Doc, Please I need suggestions to maintain good eyesight and reduce progressive myopia. I recently noticed changes in my right eye, like poor night vision even with glasses, blurriness, and eye twitching. I visited an eye clinic where several tests were carried out and Cataracts and glaucoma were ruled out. However, I was diagnosed with progressive myopia and told that changing my glasses would suffice. I'm concerned as my prescription has rapidly worsened from -1.5 to -3.0 within a year. How severe can it become, and what can I do to stabilize or reduce it?
sorry i skipped some post. Just noticing it.
In recent times, various methods for controling myopia are available. Visit an eye clinic and discuss with your eye doc about it

Good Doc. At last I was able to see the consultant and she analyzed the CVF test I did last with the previous and said "It's quite stable" the same thing you said here when you help me analysed it in 2021. But my eye pressure is still measuring 18/20 So she has recommended another drop called Brimonidine. She said I should be using it with the DuoSopt I am using. I'll do a CVF next month. I just pray the visual field remains the same cause I didn't visit the hospital throughout last year.

I started with Betaxolol 12/12 in 2020 until Betaxolol could not maintain it at the targeted level, DuoSopt came and I was getting 15 now DuoSopt can't maintain the targeted level again. Brimonidine has come in with DuoSopt. May God help me.

Do not get too worried. Just ensure you are keeping to your doctor's appointments and use your medications as prescribed and you'll be fine. Worrying doesn't change a thing

All what the person did I believe was to enlighten people on the right terminologies.

PhD is Doctor of Philosophy, known to be the highest educational qualification especially when one is in the academia as lecturers.

This is different from M.D medical doctor.

Only those who train or study medicine and surgery (MBBS - Bachelor of medicine, Bachelor of Surgery), and Dental Science (BDS - Bachelor Dental Science).

An Opthalmologist is, a medical doctor who has already received his basic training as a medical doctor, and goes for a further study in eye related diseases and acquires the skills to perform surgery in the human eyes and treat other eye related diseases.
He is regarded as the highest in the area of eye problems. He is the one to be sought for when eye diseases arises, of course after one must have contacted his family physician (GOPD - General doctor), who then assesses the individual and refers the person to the Opthalmologist.

A lawer who studies law and attends law school is regarded as Barrister, why are those who Criminology not addressed as such?

An Architect who study Architecture and does his masters before even graduating from the university are regarded as Architect. Why are those who study Quautity survey, Building and all other related courses not regarded as Architect?

So I believe the same goes with the aforementioned.

These terminologies are important to differentiate so people don't get confused and seek help when they need to and it be rendered appropriately.

O.D means Bachelors in Optometry.

An Optician is techinal skill worker who is equipped with the know how of making lens and their frames, in other words (eye glasses).

And of course their are nurses that are focused only in eye condition, though still have thier basics in general nursing care.

As for the screening and all for Medical doctors from Nigeria to any other country, that's is a global practice.

Nigerians who study medicine out side the country who return home to practice and get licenses, must under take the Nigerian medical exams here.
And same goes to those who are relocating from Nigeria to other countries.

Please, let's all be guided.
oh superb on how an OD can mean bachelor of Optometry grin.
If 100 persons come to the family physician with eye issues, how many can the family physician address their concens without having to refer to the Ophthalogists then?
The role of the family physician in medicine is what the Optometrist fills in eye care.
In accessing eye care, you are to go through the optometrist. These are highly trained professionals aswell and they can be very well held accountable for wrong management of a pt.
They know when to refer to the Ophthalmologist or other specialists.
I wonder why having an eye issue, you ll have to see a family physician that would most likely refer you out to a surgeon that has quite an overwhelming number of surgeries to perform .
These shallow mindedness is one of the clogs in the wheel of our health care system.
Let the Ophthalogists devote more time to their surgeries and other complex cases upon referrals

Opto- eye, Metry- measurement. Any other thing you do is secondary
of course vision measurement is a core aspect in eye care and it is a strength in optometry practice. Vision measurement is just one aspect when attending to a pt. We do not hear pts say we just came to measure our vision. They come with issues as corcerning their eye health and we as Optometrists have to unravel the cause and profer treatment or manage the pt and of course referral to other specialists when necessary just as d med dr's would refer to other specialists when required.
I think you should try schedule an appointment in an Optometric practice so you are better informed on what they do

I'm not in the health sector but what that guy wrote is true. An Optometrist is a not a medical doctor.

Our Nigerian doctors are doing wonders abroad stop the jealousy.

Anywhere in the world you want to practice and you didn't train there you must be screened to obtain their licence, like going from china or UK or USA. You must be daft not to know this grin grin cheesy

Again stop the jealousy for those guys
I have never seen an optometrist do the job of a medical doctor or where in the post was she addressed as a medical doctor. Both professions have their job specifications and areas of specialties. Just as the medical doctor consults, examines, diagnose his patients of their health conditions, manages or refers his patients to other specialist, so does an Optometrist however being restricted to eye care.
It's ridiculous for medical doctors to feel they are better than other health care professionals in the 21st century.
Rather than focusing on being better at their practice, it's a shame many would choose to immerse themselves into rilvary with other health care professionals. This is unproductive and detrimental to the harmony needed in the health care industry .

Sir I'm a bit confused here, there is no where in the world Veterinarians are not called not called Drs even in Nigeria. Since 1963 when veterinary medicine was founded in Nigeria, veterinarians have been called Drs, same with other African countries. We veterinarians don't problem with the title because unlike others except MBBS/Dentistry, our title isn't just a professional title, it describes what we do. But for optometry, some countries don't allow the Dr title especially UK, I guess that's where there is confusion.
What do you think Optometrist do?

It's only among low self-esteem and petty Nigerians you see such nonsense.

Even Veterinarians are fully addressed as Drs abroad... Try it here in this third world nation, and see our esteemed and all-knowing physicians embark on indefinite strikes. grin

In your hurry to sound intelligent by putting down professionals, you shot yourself in the foot

Who told you Pharm.D, O.D, etc, are solely for the purpose of bearing the title Dr?!! Not like it's anyone's business if someone chooses titles over proficiency.

Those are not mere titles... Those degrees are earned by healthcare workers who have spent time learning clinical best practices. They are recognized as such abroad. Matter of fact, that's the trend globally.

That said... Why the fuss about a mere title?!! Why the pettiness?!! Anyone can bear any title he likes, it doesn't translate to actual practice, wages, or certificate.

I think it's only here in this 4th world nation, such nonsense happens, where people are petty and overprotective of mere titles. It's also seen among our lecturers. Lol.

I know exceptionally gifted surgeons abroad who don't even use the Dr title at all... I have young learned Professors in U.S who despise the title and never use it.

These people are secure in their learning and proficiency.

Imagine a thread about a sad demise of a healthcare colleague suddenly became a fucking dick-measuring contest among you unreasonably arrogant medics... So sad and shameful.
Walahi if only they could stay in the clinic and observe what these professionals do in order to have a sound opinion.
Most times, it's young medical docs that are inexperienced and young in practice that carry those kind of talks around.
Soon they ll be more focused on relevant issues than titles

May her soul rest in peace and may the perpetrators be brought to book.

To the poster, optometrists are not medical doctors, same way a PhD does not also translate to being a medical doctor.
Where in the post was an Optometrist referred to as a medical doctor?

I deeply sympathetise with her family over this avoidable carnage & death cry cry. People should be taught to know when to run way with their lives intact.
Leaving your marriage is not a recipe for disaster.
No one on this planet has ever been reported to have died as a result of being SINGLE.
Avoid any form of Toxic Relationship, not even the one coming from your spouse or sibling.

By the way, she is not a Medical Doctor...
She's an Optometrist

An optometrist is completely different from an ophthalmologist who happens to be the Medical Doctor.
Optometrist acquired an O.D.
Ophthalmologist acquired MD, M.B.,B.S, or M.B.,B.Ch
Nigerians should learn the right terminologies & observe the distinguishing features especially when paramedics & allied medical staff come close to try deceiving them.

Same goes to Nigerian Optometrists who always want to be addressed as surgeons. Please stop distorting an already distorted nation only to continue blaming Buhari/Tinubu.

Again, people should be proud of their courses of study. After all, no single Medical Doctor has made it to the Aso Villa as President or the table of world's Billionaires meanwhile, others have.
where in the post was she referred to as a medical doctor? Please refer me to where an Optometrist claims to be a Surgeon?
By the way the Dr title isnt an exclusive right of medical Doctors.
Optometrists are licensed professionals with a Doctor of Optometry degree which every Optometrist is proud of and your opinion on who should or not use the Dr doesn't count

Please go to the hospital and be examined by a med doctor so the cause of the headache can be unraveled. Headache is just a symptom of an underlinig illness. Some causes of headache can be life threatening.
Please stop self medication and go seek professional help. Try to check your bp first if there's a place close-by to do that

Please where is your hospital situated? I need to change from public hospital to private I don't like how public hospital gives me long waiting period of consultation. I think I am begining to lose side vision. I need to do CVF test to compare with the one I did in year 2021.

During the nationwide doctors strike in 2021 you helped me analysed that one with previous one and you told me my "visual field is quite stable" but I missed my consultation last year as I lost my father during the time so I didn't do CVF or even a pressure check throughout last year but did pressure check last month it was 18, while the one I did 2021 Dec was 15/14

I was told to come back 4months later. I can't continue like this. I have this feeling that I can't see the side things I used to see before I don't know if my mind is the one playing tricks on me out of fear. Please if you can let me know your side I'll come and if you can't say it here I can send a DM if you want that.

Before now people buy dollars from CBN at 460 and sell to the parallel market at 760 making millions for doing nothing. The idea of subsidizing the dollars was not totally bad but people abused it and also it is not sustainable particularly at this time. Another thing is the fact that people that benefits from it are mostly people that buy and resell at the parallel market making huge profits for doing nothing, it is just like some very few people are sharing whay belongs to us all. Why can't the money be used to build roads that can benefit everyonehuh
that tells you that it is an institutional problem and not a policy problem. Who gives these people you are talking of dollars? The cbn of course.
Devaluing the naira has caused hyperinflation and local business would fold up, the people are plunged further in poverty.
If you ask me, it's putting the cart before the horse. This administration does not put the interest of the masses they govern first.
Just a pointer that the president is after making political points and not providing good governance was allowing already subsidized fuel to be sold at an exhorbitant price and he was mute about it.
