This Abakaliki/Airport road was poorly finished. It's a strategic road, the finishing should have been better than this. angry

I agree. The first impression one gets of Enugu and indeed Nigeria once you land at the airport is partly on this road.
This road need to be properly marked, and gutters on both sides to help preserve it in a good condition for a long time.

it should also be swept regularly to keep it clean

My People, Why are there no money changers near Enugu airport?

A lot of folks that came home via Enugu complained that unlike Lagos where you could change some dollars or Euro cash close to the airport, in Enugu, such facilities did not exist. I think someone should look into that, even if it is getting a branch of one of the commercial banks to set up a tiny bureau de change close by.

Yes, i know that. You know i actually lived and did my secondary school in Abakaliki.
So these pictures are a powerful emotional reunion for me.

Please don't get discouraged about the vultures that will come here to derail the thread. Those that won't post images of their state but, will come to bad mouth other peoples.
Let us build this thread slow and steadily like the Imo,Enugu and Anambra thread.

We shall get Spyder to furnish his Ebonyi trips pictures here.

Those road medians must be cemented or trees planted. They shouldn't just leave then open and unsightly.

The dust issue should be tackled by aggressively planting trees and grasses.

The roads median should be covered with concrete and a small area opened to plant tree as in the picture.

Let me go back to the issue of Languages. I am in Enugu now, there is this Igbo guy that supplies the abokii who operates a kiosk close to where I stay with goods. The Igbo guy probably lived in the north for some time and knows how to speak Hausa, he is always communicating with the abokii in Hausa language, all the time I've seen them both. Now the question is, if he lived in Kano or wherever and they made him to learn Hausa rather than him making them to learn Igbo, why not make the abokii learn Igbo instead of speaking Hausa with him in your own land? The implication of this is like with more people like him, Zonacom and Nnewis1stgay, we will soon be communicating with Hausa language in Igbo land.
This is actually the disturbing mindset! Our people are forced to learn hausa to survive in the northern part of Nigeria, then those in their villages in Igboland are also forced to learn hausa to trade in their homeland!
Someone truly has an arrogant attitude of being superior and it is "others" that need to learn his language and not vice versa. Just as the British looked down on our languages. Our people have subtly tolerated that behavior to continue

Mugabe has been accused of many thing EXCEPT CORRUPTION. Not many Nigerian politicians can boast of such pedigree.

Jonathan approves establishment of Enugu Free Trade Zone
By NAN on May 26, 2015

Jonathan-5-02-15
President Goodluck Jonathan
The Enugu State Government says it has received approval from the Federal Government to establish a Free Trade Zone (FTZ) in Enugu to serve the South East.

The Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Dr Jude Akubuilo, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Tuesday that President Goodluck Jonathan gave the approval in April.

He said that the FTZ, to be located at the Ninth mile corner in Enugu metropolis, would have 402 hectares of land and another 16.8 hectares at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport.

The commissioner said that Gov. Sullivan Chime worked hard to secure the approval.

“We are waiting for the licence backing the approval and we are optimistic that it will come before the end of May.

“If you bring in goods and it is cleared and taken to the zone, an enhancement will be done to those goods, you will almost get them tax free.

“The industrial activities in the state will be astronomical because everybody who owns a factory in Nnewi, Onitsha, Orba, Nsukka, Ebonyi, Aba will be clamouring to have their factories in the zone.

“ Jobs will be created, improved infrastructures, enhanced road network, enhanced rail activities will be enjoyed in the state,’’ Akubuilo said.

He appealed to the incoming APC-led administration to support the development of the trade zone to enhance the nation’s economy and lives of people in the area.

NAN reports that the FTZ scheme was evolved to strategically improve investment climate in Nigeria, by stimulating export oriented business activities through the strengthening of strategic national economic policies.

It is to streamline administrative approval processes and provide a one-stop-shop service for businesses.

The target is to also create an enabling environment for the growth and development of export-oriented goods in the non-oil sector of the economy.
http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/05/jonathan-approves-establishment-of-enugu-free-trade-zone/
This is very great news to those who know how free trade zones ( FTZ) works to attract foreign direct investment especially in the garment making and food packaging factories. Many locals will also be gainfully employed while garment can be made for export right here in Nigeria. In many countries including China, the FTZs has been the cornerstone of their industrialization.

One hopes the Enugu state government will work closely with the FG to develop and secure the site very close to the Enugu - Port Harcourt railway line and attract foreign and local factories to be built in the zone.

This is the reason why serious nations have a MIX of power generating sources.

If we had enough power from coal and other sources, we wouldn't be in such sorry situation. But OBJ wanted only gas because building coal plants will mean building power plants in Enugu and Benue, which were not preferred destinations. This is what tribal consideration does to a nation.
Even Zambia with very little coal and not as clean as Nigeria's coal, have completed their 3rd coal power station.

Although I'm concerned about their next source of livelihood if okada is banned but hey should know the banning of okada is unavoidable in this day and age. I hope the government will find a way to create an alternative for these people, like giving them priority considerations in the mass transit vehicles. I'm all for banning of okada in Awka and onitsha especially
Well, in that mindset, we can very well allow rickshaws on our streets since it will create livelihood for some or better still allow importation of substandard drugs or kidnapping since removing them will affect the livelihood of some and make them unemployed. The point i am making is that government makes laws for the good of the overwhelming majority of the citizens . Using motorcycles as a form of mass transit is archaic and a pointer to the governments complete lack of care for her citizens. Suffice to say that ANAMBRA is the ONLY SE and SS state still using okada for mass transit! Even many northern states and SW states have improved their system to at least keke napep!

If you have visited the orthopedic ward of Genral Hospital or Borromeo, you will see thousands of youths maimed for life due to the careless use of Okada. Not to mention the crime it promotes by giving criminals a quick getaway.
Now Okada riders should be given a grace period to acquire keke napep. Using tricycles aka "keke napep" will allow an average okada man to carry 4 passengers where an okada carries one. Not just that the passengers pay 50% of what Okada charges (i.e N50 naira where okada charges N100 naira), the Keke napep man gains N200 naira for the same distance and same fuel where an okada man would have had just N100 naira. So it is a win-win for all.

Just wait for the federal debts in the next 4 years.
Nigeria under APC will owe $100, Billion dollars to IMF/ Paris club which will take us back to the 1990s situation where our entire budget is just enough to service the debts and not even payback a dime.

APC has no intention of developing Nigerian economy and generating more income or investment. They are ONLY focused on how to share and squander what is available.Even borrowing money just to share it amongst themselves as political booty.

PoliticsRe: List Of 10 Poorest States In Nigeria by OreMI22: 9:30pm On May 25, 2015
post=34089359:
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Sokoto is the poorest state in Nigeria with an 81.2% poverty rate.

Furthermore, a 2012 information posted on the bureau’s website listed the top 10 poorest states in the country:

10. Zamfara – 70.8%

Formed from the Old Sokoto state in 1996 and located in northwestern Nigeria, Zamfara is governed by Abdul'aziz Abubakar Yari, a member of the All Nigeria Peoples Party.

Agriculture is the most important occupation of the people of the state, hence its slogan "farming is our pride"

Recently the governor was blasted for the “alarming scope of economic dangers and its potential threat to the economic development of the state,” by the Zamfara Budget Working Group.

9. Kebbi – 72%

Kebbi State is a north-western Nigeria state formed from part of Sokoto State in 1991. It is bordered by Sokoto State,Niger State,Dosso Regionin the Republic of Niger and the nation of Benin.

There isn’t much to be written about the state’s economy but things are looking up. The recently concluded Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport (SABIA), stands out as one of Nigeria's most sophisticated airports and is expected to boost the state’s economy.

8. Bauchi – 73%

Bauchi is a Northern Nigerian state formed in 1976 when the former North-Eastern Stat ewas broken up.

In Hausa the word Bauchi meansthe land of freedom and tourism. However recent Boko Haram adventures in the area, though few, have driven tourists away from the area.

Last year Gov. Isa Juguda told Arewa that economies of Northern states is finished due to the Boko Haram insurgency.

7. Ebonyi – 73.6%

Created by Gen. Sanni Abacha in 1996, Ebonyi is the only south eastern state among the top 9 poorest country. It is governed by Martin Elechi who currently claims his enemies have set aside N3bn for his impeachment.

The state is besieged by corrupt office holders and the EFCC recently froze accounts of the state’s local governments.

6. Plateau - 74.1%

Plateau State is the twelfth largest state of Nigeria, and is roughly located in the center of the country. Governored by Jonah Jang of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, Plateau has naturally col climate and a wide range of tourist attractions and boasts of a bubbling state capital, Jos.

The state is haunted by some terrorist attacks and tribal clashes from time to time, especially clashes between Fulani herdsmen and its inhabitants.

5. Jigawa – 74.1%

Jigawa, carved out of the old Kano state is located in North central Nigeria and is under the leadership of Alhaji Sule lamido.

Kano State and Katsina State border Jigawa to the west, Bauchi State to the east and Yobe State to the northeast. To the north, Jigawa shares an international border with Zinder Region in The Republic of Niger, which is a unique opportunity for cross-border trading activities. Government readily took advantage of this by initiating and establishing a Free-Trade Zone at the Border town of Maigatari of country of Niger.

4. Gombe – 74.2%

Gombe is another North eastern state which shares common borders with the states of Borno, Yobe, Taraba, Adamawa and Bauchi. It suffers sporadic attacks from terrorists and is governed by rIbrahim Hassan Dankwambo of the Peoples’ Democratic Party.

3. Adamawa – 74.2%

Formed in 1991 from the extinct Gongola state, Adamawa has of late been terrorized by the islamist Boko Haram terrorist group, disrupting it’s economic development and growth.

However Yola, the state capital under its current governor Bala Ngillari is fast being transformed with new roads, street lights, traffic lights and other prerequisites of a modern city being built. However things are far from being rosy as other parts of the state remain underdeveloped.

2. Katsina – 74.5%

Katsina is a state in North central Nigeria and is governed by Ibrahim Shettima of the Peoples’ Democratic Party.

The state has the highest poverty prevalence amongst all states in the region.

Under the economic sector there is a paltry capital allocation of only N276 million (0.2%) to manufacturing, a paltry N214,019,000 (0.1%) capital provision for Women Empowerment under the Ministry of Women Affairs and only N100 million (0.08%) under the Ministry of Youth and Sports for the states Youth Empowerment Program (Youth Action Plan).

1. Sokoto – 81.2%

Sokoto is located in the extreme Northwest of Nigeria. It has unfriendly climate conditions with temperature going as high as 45C on a normal day.

Most part of the state are rural areas and over eighty percent (80%) of the inhabitants of Sokoto practice one form of agriculture or another.

GOVERNORS are responsible for poverty by looting their states or wasting the money on frivolity such as building endless flyovers instead of investing in poverty alleviation measures as agriculture or small scale businesses. States such as Katsina or Jigawa that corner the top 15 lion share of allocations in Nigeria have no business being amongst the 10 poorest states.

PLEASE, SHOW US WHERE THESE STATES STAND IN FEDERAL ALLOCATION.

That clearly shows GOVERNORS are responsible for poverty in their states.

Be specific, it's Yoruba men running wild in their tribal nature to try and rubbish the woman's sterling achievements to no avail.

I have said it before that just as Obafemi Awolowo introduced tribalism into Nigerian politics for his own political ends and today it is a cancer in Nigeria, yoruba people should be mindful of the tactics they introduce. Other peoples of Nigeria will simply adopt the strategy in due course.
