BuddahMonk: Welcome bros. Investors don't need much luring, what we need is having visionary leaders and our people leading first. Sometimes I ask whether Igbos hate their home, you see igbos investing in places without social and economic amenities but when you remind them of the need to take their investments home they will be telling you incompetent our leaders are.
Last year I went to one medical diagnostic center at Oshodi called Mecure, I love what I saw there, the professionalism and the corporate outlook of the company. Igbos have such firms but they are located outside Igboland and the worst part is that they don't as a matter of charity open a branch in their state, only Nnewi people can never do that in Igboland.
What we need is opening up our economic frontiers. There is no ISP firm in East except the rickety services being rendered by mobile service providers. East used to be sweet when Rainbownet was working, I shed tears with the demise of that coy.
In Lagos there is Swift, Spectranet,Smile,MainOne,
All these ISP firms janpacked in Lagos, Smile is owned by an Igboman, why is he went to take the coy down East and make his money instead of being in Lagos where Swift is dominating the already saturated market.
Fidelity, Diamond, Zenith, UBA, Keystone, are all Igbo banks with useless offices in East while building skyscrapers in Lagos, Unity Bank has head office in Lagos but skyscraper is in Kano.
The biggest thing Arthur Eze did in Anambra was making his hometown LG headquarters though his family built Toronto but he ran down Premier Brewery down.
Igbos need to think East because the heart of Nigerians are no longer happy with their success, nobody believes they will rise again after the war which they did and attracted jealousy and envy.
Don't put all your eggs in one basket is a very good and intelligent economic decision. I am glad there are still strategic thinking Igbos like you alive in my generation. I hope you know it is a gift, especially at the bolded last lines. Many of our people know how to work very hard and succeed in life, but lack strategic reasoning like you to keep their wealth in a safe environment once it's made. As much as i protest Dangote's dearth of investment in the SE, I know he is just being a smart/strategic northerner in thinking. It used to hurt me deeply when someone is killed or his property burnt in Nigeria simply because he is Igbo. But, i have learnt that the only way Igbo reason strategically is when the awful event actually happen to them. To tell them about what may happen when it has not happened is day dreaming to them. Having said that, we must agitate that the SE capitals create industrial layouts with good road net works and easily acquired land for these people to build branches. Many SE governors simply DON"T CARE or have no vision in helping our people invest at home.it is very difficult to obtain land or C of O in many SE capitals while these peoples' villages may not have as much infrastructure as Nnewi to allow them create branches at home. |

Zonacom: No investment in the health sector is ENOUGH. Don't easily get carried away by the structures you see from outside. Most of the above health centres are ill equipped. The state university teaching hospital is still far from standard, though i must admit it's getting better gradually. I hope more people will invest in the health sector in the state to prevent people from seeking medical services outside the state. Some time ago, i saw a beautiful hospital structure around the secreteriat area in Awka. I hope to see more of such. If you visit places like Jos, you will realise Anambra don't have much health facilities like you think. You took it from my mouth! No amount of health facilities is enough. Especially when they have not reached the minimum level of specialization in manpower and equipment acceptable worldwide. The day you will realize this fact is the day you or your loved ones will come down with a serious ailment such as cancer or stroke etc. Then you will be shocked that none of the hospital you have showed is equipped to save their lives or your life.We can only begin to rest in investing into health when all the surgeries or operations or treatments that can be done in India or South Africa can be done in at least 2 hospitals in Anambra. Note that i said "India or SA" not even UK or USA. |

mzilakazi: Nigeria is trying to make a damage control about the restaurant selling a human flesh. Surely, the authorities received the order from above to deny flatly the incident ever occurred, so as to remove it from international platform that may result into a serious damage in the integrity of Nigeria's fast food outlets especially to prospective international patrons. The saga had to be manipulated and pushed under the carpet, so that it does not ruin the business of other competitors who are involved in the same business of selling fast food. I understand that the move was to save the face of those who are honest in the business, those who sell the real beef, pork and mutton to the public. Their image would have been unfairly compromised if the authorities would have let the story confirmed. However, I hope the authorities will now have to deal with this scandal clandestinely. However, I don't think I would ever eat any meat if I by mistake find myself in Nigeria. Actually, there was NO restaurant selling human meat in Nigeria. About 2 years ago, a restaurant owner was accused of witchcraft and burying a corpse in his compound. That restaurant was pulled down. Sahara-lie-porters in their quest to find silly things to write, reincarnated that story with a different twist. Unfortunately, their quest to write crap about a section of Nigeria will now taint the restaurant business in the entire country. If i were you, i would NEVER visit Nigeria because your flesh may end up in a pot of soup in a restaurant in Lagos. |

OdenigboAroli: Our people need to be sensitized on the importance of paying their tax as when do. I was having a conversation with a Nigerian who came visiting and he complained we pay too much tax and I said you wonder why this land is so developed. These people pay their taxes and in return the funds are used prudently to develop and maintain the system. Anambrarians pay your taxes and let the government do their job.
The Head, Human Resources and Administration, Anambra Property and Land Use Charge, Mrs Chinenye Okafor, on Wednesday said Anambra had 80, 000 tax defaulters.
Speaking in Awka, she said this class of people owed the state government over N2.5bn, adding that about 550 of such cases were pending in courts.
Okafor added that over 4,000 summons had been prepared by the agency against tax defaulters but were yet to be filed in court.
To this end, the state government had sealed-off seven buildings in Awka, including a school and a hotel over the refusal of the owners to pay property rate.
The Anambra Property and Land Use Charge said it carried out the sealing off of the buildings following judgments it obtained from an Awka Magistrate court against the tax evaders.
The affected buildings are Choice Hotel Ltd., Netherland International School, Chris Moore Lodge and residential buildings belonging to Mr Emeka Akaigwe, Mrs Peace Okeke and Mr Joachim Acho all in Awka.
Speaking after the exercise, Okafor said the affected buildings owed the state government a total of N 1.6m.
“In ensuring that we boost the Internally Generated Revenue of the state, there is the need for property and land owners to pay their rates,” Okafor said.
She maintained that the organisation in 2014 carried out such enforcement in Awka and Onitsha in about 45 buildings, noting that 20 more judgments would soon be executed in the state.
‘We are looking forward to enforcing judgments by next week in 14 communities in Obosi urban and places like Akpaka, Omoba phases I and II, GRA, Okpoko, Iyiowa, Nkwelle and 3-3, near Onitsha.
‘We are advising property owners in those areas as well as in Awka, Ogidi and Nnewi to go and pay their property rates before next week or face the wrath of the law,” he said. This is a good development as long as the taxes demanded are fair and affordable. If you ask someone to pay N500,000 naira as tax, you are clearly being unreasonable unless it is a well known company you are taxing. Our judiciary should be sharpened to expedite action of tax cases so that they can mandate the seizure of assets or even the jailing of tax defaulters. My fear with our people is the tendency to be extremists in implementing things differently from how it is practiced in sane societies. We would like to go from a situation of zero tax to being the heaviest taxing authority in the world. I think it was Igboson that gave an excellent idea that if the cost of bribing the tax collectors is 3-5 times the taxes demanded, our people will choose to bribe the tax collectors than pay taxes to government. This is a critical art that must be addressed if you want people to develop the habit of willingly paying taxes. In America, i pay sales taxes on everything i buy in the supermarket, but it is usually small & affordable and never more than 10% of the cost of the item. I also pay income taxes and i get tax returns each year. Since we cannot hope to give our people tax returns,we should temper the taxes demanded to make sure they are humane, reasonable and affordable. If not our people will hate paying taxes and resist it at all costs. |

biafrandream: The houses in Trans-Ekulu are pre-colonial? British people have been using bricks for more than 500 years and I am not sure erosion has sacked them. The problem with us is that we have little or no regard for our environment. We excavate soil and abandon the place to the vagaries of the elements. Places that are erosion-prone should not be not mined until a proper environmental impact assessment is carried out.
Mining of sand in our rivers, presents it's own problem as well. I visited one of the rivers sometime ago and I spoke to one of the sand miners, he told me that sand is becoming scarce these days and I asked him what he thought would happen in 50 years time, he told me that honestly the future of our environment is bleak. Please if live in Enugu, visit the bridges there, you will realize that the base of most of the bridges have been washed off due to indiscriminate mining of sand. One day there will be no sand to mine in those rivers.
Whether we are mining clay or sandy soil, every mining activity should be regulated to save our environment, that's the bottom line.
As at the time the brick factory in my village closed, a lot of people who placed orders were waiting for their deliveries but they never received them, so it's not as if people were not buying the bricks and that is why I alleged economic sabotage. One of my uncles had to use blocks to complete his house fencing because the factory shot down. You deserve an award for the bolded statement. Sometimes we act as though our environment is someone else's business. In my childhood days, the elders chastised one for not sweeping the compound in the morning or indiscriminately urinating anywhere or cutting trees, especially palm trees. Today, such simple elements to respect our environment has disappeared. We excavate hill sides and abandon it to the mercy of erosion. Using red bricks will be a good addition to our architectural design of buildings. |

IGBOSON1: ^^^I'm starting to feel that way about Imo State and Rochas as well! About 3 to 4 years ago i was optimistic and had a good feeling about Rochas and Imo.....but now i'm left a bit deflated as nothing substantial is happening over there! Yes, beautifying Owerri and building a couple of roads (the quality of which i have issues with) is all well and good.....but i want to see foreign-direct-Investments (FDIs), substantial increase in IGR, world-class engineering and other positive news stories in Imo like we see with other states like Akwa Ibom, Enugu and Anambra! I know Imo receives much less allocation, but 4 years+ into the Rochas administration we should be seeing at least one world class structure being built! By now Oguta Lake should have attracted at least a 300 million dollar investment which would include a 5-star Hotel Resort, a rail link or Autobahn-type highway to Owerri or Port Harcourt airports, conferencing facilities and a River Port at the Lake!
There's just too much talk and raising of expectations with little end results! Imo receives the highest allocation in SE - FACT. While Enugu & Ebonyi get the smallest. In terms of federal allocation, Imo is to SE what Akwa Ibom is to SS, Kano is to NW and Lagos is to SW. |

nationwide1: Trekker for GMB was hailed, praised and celebrated even when no one knew when and where he started with associated poor coverage unlike the trekker for GEJ who made it known when and where he would commence and updates the public daily on the progress of the mission.
If the the trekker for GEJ was a European or an American, the same people who condemn him would have been extolling him.
If you doubt me, why do our girls dress half naked like a schizophrenic patient because they watch it in a foreign movie? Why do our boys dress with torn jean trousers like a newly mentally deranged fellow to appear modern as a result of imitating the whites?
I see hatred in the recent upsurge of condemnation of the trekker for GEJ; hatred for GEJ. The man who embarks on trekking is adult and certainly sane so he knows what he is doing.
He celebrates GEJ's handling of elections his own way and there's nothing wrong with that. I am sure it does not adversely affect his job or he has a way of covering up for his absence.
Most of the people who condemn him say he would have trekked to protest poor electricity supply and unemployment as if they have ever attempted any protest in their lives; as if unemployment and poor electricity supply in Nigeria began with GEJ regime.
For the sake of those who have never seen anything good in GEJ, I wish Nigeria would experience a political crisis that would affect every part of the country so that some people will learn to appreciate architects of peace. Don't worry, unless GMB changes, he will find that Nigeria has been made ungovernable for him too. What goes around, comes around. |

Notice that people are making some efforts to repaint their old houses. As Igboson had stated earlier in this thread, the state and LGA authorities should embark on encouraging landlords of dilapidated buildings to re-paint them. It is easier said than done to ask our people to spend money on aesthetics. But at least the effort should be made. centje: It’s a disgrace for Igbo to beg Buhari for appointments — Ohanaeze

PHOTO; SUNDAY AGHAEZE
THE Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization has described as a disgrace to the Igbo nation, the decision of some Igbo people to beg the president -elect, General Muhammadu Buhari for appointments in his government that will take off on May 29, 2015.
President of Ohaneze in Anambra State, Chief Chris Eluomunoh, who is also the chairman of Ohaneze State Presidents’ Forum for the seven Igbo-speaking states, said at a news conference in Awka that issues of federal appointments were constitutional obligations which every president of Nigeria, irrespective of the voting pattern of a people in an election, must obey.
He condemned in its entirety, the move by certain people who claimed to be representing the Igbo to be begging the president-elect for appointments of Ndigbo in his government. According to him, Igbo nation is an integral part of Nigeria and must get their due share in Nigeria, adding that appointing Igbo people into offices should not in any way be regarded as doing them any favour.
Eluomunoh said there was nothing unusual for a group to be in opposition, telling Igbo people not to see the defeat of Jonathan as the end of their progress in the politics of Nigeria. He said: “It is a disgrace for any Igbo to be begging General Buhari for appointment, after all Buhari and others in the South West and members of his party had been in opposition for the past 16 years and they never begged Jonathan for appointment.
“As far as the politics of Nigeria is concerned, General Buhari and the incoming APC government must involve the South East in the zonal arrangement. “With Buhari as the president and the South West as the vice president, the next most important appointment, which is the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, must come from the South East. We don’t have to beg for it and so those who went to Buhari to beg for appointment on behalf of Igbo did not represent Igbo.”
http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/its-a-disgrace-for-igbo-to-beg-buhari-for-appointments-ohanaeze/ Those begging Buhari for appointment are on their own. They should however stop using the name "Igbo" to beg for their personal aggrandizement. |
