This passage is clearly about the Lord's coming or "day" of the Lord, it is very reminiscent of the tribulation period and then Jesus comes/touches down as seen in Revelation 19. Remember that between Revelation6-19, the earth suffers a lot and so do Jerusalem/Israel. But Jesus comes and what follows, the defeat of the beast and his cohorts.

The New Testament says clearly that WE (Christians) are now the temple of God, the spiritual nation of Israel. The physical temple of Jerusalem AND the city was destroyed in AD70 because the Jews rejected Christ Jesus and were no longer His special people. Therefore, the place of Jerusalem in Israel lost it's significance also.
Jesus said ..."the hour cometh when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father ... But the hour cometh, and now is, when the TRUE worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth."(John 4:23-24)
If you're looking at that passage as having anything to do with the second coming of Christ, then you have to take your eyes off the literal city of Jerusalem or the nation of Israel.
We all know that Babylon, who led the literal nation of Israel into captivity, is no more. But we have a mention of a Babylon the Great in the book of Revelation making war with God's people in the end time. New Testament CLEARLY teaches that, ANYONE who comes to Christ Jesus are the chosen people of God, the spiritual Jews (Romans 2:29), (Romans 9:6-, (Galatians 3:28). Jesus also clearly said Himself ..."Therefore I say unto you, the kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof."(Matthew 21:43) and "Behold, your house is left unto you desolate."(Matthew 23:38). So if that passage is anything to go by as regarding the last days, then the above mentioned people are God's people who are keeping His commandments and the faith of Jesus(Rev 14:12), the world over. And the spiritual babylon (the beast) is the one making war with them. As for Jesus setting foot on mount olives to fight the nations as when He fought in the day of battle. You're in for a surprise if you think Jesus will come down and fight. We shall be caught up in the air to meet the Lord when He Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout(1 Thes 4:16-17). This is how the second coming will be. The mention of people escaping through the valley of the splitted mountain is just a way of saying Jesus rescuing His people.

Zec 14:9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.
Zec 14:11 And men shall dwell in it, and there shall be no more utter destruction; but Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited.

This is the period of the 1000 year reign on earth. God promises Jerusalem peace through prophecy here. The rest of the passage/chapter sings the same tune. This is the second coming and Jesus clearly touches ground and earth. Verse 1 calls it the DAY of the Lord. It's the same period called last day or the end of all things/the world.

If you read your Bible well, you'll know that at His second coming, the saints will be taken with Him and the rest destroyed and live not until after 1000year(Rev 20:5). Where will the saints be during the 1000 years? Rev 7:14-15 has the answer. The Jerusalem you're talking about is the New Jerusalem(Rev 21) which is after the 1000year reign before the throne of God in Heaven. It's this same city that the resurrected lost souls (after the 1000years) encompassed (Rev 20:9), before God will finally destroy them.

Again, i have to reiterate that the "last days" are a period, not 24hours.

"last DAYS" as used in 2Pet 3:3, 2Tim 3:1, Acts 2:17 etc is different from the "last DAY-this one is singular- in John 12:48, 11:24, John 6:39. John 6:39 was talking resurrection of the saints on the LAST DAY not last days(latter days)

Since we have the first resurrection (of the dead saints), there's definitely going to be a second one (of the lost after 1000years). They're the ones that will be deceived in Rev 20:8. They will be destroyed (Rev 20:9). These people have no second chance because the second death(final judgement-Rev 20-14-15)already has power over them(Rev 20:6)because they would remain dead after the first resurrection.Everyone's fate is determined at The Second coming.Note that the earth will remain uninhabited for the 1000years and satan will have no one to tempt.

The mark of the beast is probably one of few Bible topics that the whole world knows about, and yet there are so few people who actually know the truth about what the mark of the beast actually is. Some believe it's the number 666. Some believe it's a tattoo. With the majority believing it's some kind of physical mark like a microchip. And why do the majority believe it's a physical mark? Because the word "mark" in Revelation 13 actually means a mark! But this is a flawed logic.
Revelation 13:14 says that Satan will deceive the world into worshipping him. Do you think this is just a simple case of a microchip being enforced upon us? No, a microchip isn't a 'deception'.
In Revelation 17 we find a harlot woman riding a beast, and if you take a look at the original meaning, again you will see that it is an actual woman riding a wild beast. So can we now expect to see a prostitute woman riding a wild beast, seducing the "kings of the earth" into giving her their support?
Well, if this was a Hollywood or Nollywood film, then maybe, but this is real life and we know this isn't going to be the case.
The thing is, the book of Revelation is full of symbolic language, and we cannot just accept the literal meaning of all the words found in that book. This also applies to the mark of the beast. Just because the word mark means a literal mark, doesn't mean the mark in real life will be a literal physical mark. So instead of just guessing what the mark of the beast is, we must use the Bible to interpret itself and let it explain what the mark is.
Satan is the arch deceiver and he is not just going to force people to take a physical mark. There is no deception in that whatsoever. And that is not how Satan works.
The next problem with this belief of the mark of the beast being something like a microchip is the fact that any government could force a microchip or ID card or tattoo upon us. And we cannot be lost for something that is forced upon us. Now don't get me wrong. I do believe some kind of technology like a bank card or ID card will be used in association with the mark of the beast to stop those who refuse the mark from buying and selling. Technology can be used by the beast system to keep track of people in the end times. It can be used to stop those of us who refuse the mark of the beast from "buying and selling" (Rev. 13:17). But in of itself, technology or any physical mark cannot be the mark of the beast.

So What Is The Mark?

Revelation 14:12 ...'Here is the patience of the saints. Here are they that keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.'
Now right before this verse, the third angel explains that those who do take the mark of the beast will receive the full wrath of God. Which means the verse above is telling us about those who don't take the mark. And what are they doing? They are keeping the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus Christ. So the mark of the beast is in some way connected to the commandments of God. Which makes sense, as this issue is all to do with worship and obedience.
Look at what it also says in Revelation 14.
Revelation 14:9 ...'And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice. If any man WORSHIP the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in in hand ....'
Do you see? The issue of the mark of the beast is to do with WORSHIP! Somehow, Satan is going to deceive the world into giving their allegiance to the beast and it's image and they will end up spiritually worshipping and obeying the beast instead of worshipping and obeying God. But God's end time saints will be faithful to Christ Jesus and will know the truth, and will continue to obey God and keep His commandments.
What was it that the deceivers used to get Daniel thrown into the Lions' den? ...

Daniel 6:5 ...'Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God'...
Knowing that Daniel would be faithful to the law of God, these deceivers caused the king to institute a secular law which would go against one of God's commandments.
In the same way, the beast kingdom will institute a law (mark of the beast) which will be in opposition to the commandments of God, and will be used to condemn God's people in the end.

So can we pinpoint exactly what the mark of the beast is?

Yes. But first we need to find out who the beast of Revelation 13 is, to know what its mark is.
Who has done anything in connection with the commandments of God that could be regarded as her "mark"?
This was prophesied to happen in the book of Daniel with the little horn power.

So who would think to change "time" and the law of God. Did anyone ever do this? Yes. And who boast that it is they who changed the weekly sabbath day from the 7th day to the 1st (think to change time), of which there is no Biblical authority for any such change?
Take a look at the following quotes with regards to this sabbath "change".

"The authority of the church could therefore not be bound to the authority of the Scripture, because the church had changed...the Sabbath into Sunday, not by command off Christ, but by its own authority." (Canon and Tradition, p. 263)

"The pope has the power to change times, to abrogate laws, and to dispense with all things, even the precepts of Christ. The pope has the authority and often exercised it, to dispense with the command of Christ." (Decretal, de Tranlatic Episcop. Cap. (The pope can modify divine law) Ferraris' Ecclesiastical Dictionary)

"By the very act of changing the Sabbath into Sunday, which Protestants allow of ... Because by keeping Sunday they acknowledge the church's [Roman Catholic] power to ordain feasts, and to command them under sin."(Abridgement of Christian Doctrine, page 58)

"Of course the change (from Sabbath to Sunday) was her act .... and the act is a MARK of her ecclesiastical power and authority in religious matters."(signed by H.F.Thomas, Chancellor for Cardinal Gibbons, in a letter dated Nov. 11, 1895)

"The church is above the Bible, and this transference of Sabbath observance is proof of that fact."(Catholic record of London, Ontario, Sept. 1, 1923)

"Not the Creator of Universe, in Genesis 2:1-3, but the Catholic Church can claim the honor of having granted man a pause to his work every seven days."(S. C. Mosna, Storia della Domenica, 1969, pp. 366-367).

"Sunday is a time when all Christians discover the Eucharist form that their life is called to have ... the Cardinal stressed how the way in which we celebrate Sunday determines the way in which we live the rest of the week, since it is the mark of Christian identity." (Cardinal O'Malley, Archbishop of Boston, Sanctifying celebration, the family in the Lord’s Day, 1st June 2012).

So the "little horn" of Daniel 7 is guilty of changing the law of God?
The very commandments that the saints of Revelation 14:12 are keeping which stops them from receiving the mark of the beast.
And remember, the issue of the mark of the beast is all to do with worship and obedience. Will we worship and obey the beast and receive it's mark, or worship and obey God?
Don't think that you will need to get down on your knees to worship the beast. All you will need to do is give allegiance to the beast and accept it's authority over God, and this would be deemed as worship.
So is the mark of the beast to do with Sunday worship? Yes, but not yet, as Sunday has not yet been enforced as a day of rest yet. But the Roman Catholic Church, along with many other churches and institutions, including trade unions, are now actively pushing for a Sunday law to be enforced as a national and international day of rest.
And this is in direct opposition to the sabbath rest that God instituted during creation week. And this places the authority of the Roman Catholic Church above the authority of our Heavenly Father. Which of course is an abomination!
We've been through this before, in the Dark Ages when people were called heretics and millions killed just for keeping God's commandment. It will happen again. This will make more sense to you if you come to the term that the anti-christ system has always been with us.
The 4th commandment concerning the seventh day sabbath is the ONLY commandment that tells us who it is we worship. It tells us that we worship the Creator of heaven and earth. It is the central commandment that connects God with mankind, and it contains the seal of God of which the end time saints receive and anyone without this seal will be destroyed at the second coming of Jesus Christ.
So anyone who accepts the Sunday law that is going to be enforced will be giving their allegiance and worship to the beast instead of God. Then they will be marked (spiritually) with the mark of the beast, either in their forehead, or in their hand.
The forehead represents the group of people who freely make their decision in their minds and give their loyalty to the beast, ie., professing Christians who accept the "authority" of the "beast".

Which is why it says they get the mark in their foreheads OR their hand.
Now something we need to understand is that there is a great spiritual war between Christ and satan. Satan is the great deceiver, and through his miracles and wonders (Revelation 13:13-14) he manages to DECEIVE virtually the whole world (professing Christians included). And how does he deceive the masses? By counterfeiting God and transforming himself into an "angel of light" (2 Corinthians 11:14).
Satan has a counterfeit for just about everything found in the Word of God. And he has managed to deceive virtually the whole world on one particular point in God's ten commandments.
Virtually the whole professed Christian world has embraced this false sabbath (Sunday), and they are ripe to be deceived by the evil one into taking the mark of the beast. But Sunday keeping AT THIS MOMENT is not the mark of the beast. It needs to be enforced as a day of rest by civil law in order for it to become the mark of the beast. And this is what the Beast is pushing for right now. But that doesn't mean you can rest easy for the time being. Once you come to the truth, you need to live by it. Otherwise, God may withdraw His Spirit from your life and you will be in danger of becoming entangled in the deceptions of Satan, not having the power to overcome.
Note: Will God's people be safe by just keeping the seventh day sabbath commandment? No. We need to keep all of God's ten commandments, AND the faith of Jesus Christ (Revelation 14:12).

The sure thing is the certainty of Jesus' warning to the church of HIS coming. Mark 13:39. Prepare for you do not know when He comes..... Don't expect something to happen before HE comes. Prepare and go about preaching the gospel as He instructed us. Mark 13:10, Mark 16:15-16. That's what matters.
