"Seven Doors" 2024

Not exactly a home run, but I appreciate the effort....

The opening scene is a testament to the high production value this movie boasts visually stunning and terrifying in a way that keeps you glued to your seat.

It tells the story of Adèdunjoyè and Amaka: their love, his rise to kingship, and an unexpected cultural atonement that weighs heavily on his reign due to the sins of his forefathers. But the story is far from simple. There are numerous subplots that initially seem to spiral out of the writers' control. However, they manage to rein them in, merge them with the main plot, and deliver a solid ending.

If Yoruba lore is your thing, this film is the epitome of it, a cultural showcase brimming with swagger, razzmatazz, and mythical allure.

I began this review by highlighting the production value because that’s where the movie truly shines. Everything looks crisp and clean, with just the right color grading. However, the cinematography could have been better. There were shots the production was clearly capable of but failed to make immersive enough, which dampened the experience. Another flaw is the lack of clarity regarding the period in which the movie is set. The film mixes props from the '70s, '80s, and '90s, creating some confusion. That said, the props themselves are impressive, I saw pristine '70s and '80s cars and couldn’t help but wonder where they found them!

One of the standout elements is the film’s portrayal of unity between the Yorubas and Igbos, especially at a time when the tribal divide feels so wide. Chioma Chukwuka plays a pivotal role in this unity narrative, delivering a fantastic performance as the Olori. Her ability to speak both Yoruba and Igbo effortlessly was nothing short of brilliant.

There’s more to admire than criticize here. If you’re a fan of Nollywood and the strides it’s been making since Netflix set up shop in Nigeria, you’ll probably enjoy this. I certainly did.

Unscathed each time?
Not sure of that statement cause man has so many broken bones in just this season finale with cuts everywhere & he’s been on medication since that first encounter with Bianca & her team..

So he’s not exactly invincible

And about her giving him a bloody fight, do you mean hand to hand combat? cause i’m not sure the Jackal has the patience to engage her in such when he has his family he needs to catch up with
I didn't mean unscathed literally...i just meant, they were so many times who could have been caught, but he just gets to escape somehow...When he was in Budapest with Norman Stoke? When he was in Estonia at that theatre to take out UDC? Even the superficial car chase with the police in the last episode... seems to always find a way to escape these situations....

And again not literally "hand to hand" combat when i said bloody fight...At least a chase, a proper gun fight, ... nothing, i mean the first time the 2 central character of the show are meeting and they didn't even try to make it worthwhile?, she went out almost immediately as she entered...puff...and that was all... maybe i might be wrapped up in a fantasy fairy ending and the show runners were having none of it....brutal 😭

Bruh he is just that good, I feel like Bianca was never meant to be a liked character giving how polarizing she was.
People that were rooting for her were just doing it cos they think The Jackal deserves some Karma or something.
But the game is the game, plus it's a highly fictional story that doesn't need to feel realistic, just sensational.
Yeah clocking it now, The Jackal's name is on the title of the show 😅😩, It's his day, and the protagonist of the whole thing, morals aside. So if anybody was surviving this season, he was always gonna be him.

Bianca was no saint...The deaths of Emma and Allison were avoidable, but she was to enveloped in the idea of catching the Jackal to care... probably deserved to get got in hindsight...so i yield....on to season 2.

Bianca stood no chance...

Wasn't she just a desk officer with some field training and little field experience?

Against an international assassin at his own home turf?

You just don't go into the home of an assassin. He has the entire layout to his advantage. He might even have booby traps...

Once he turned off the lights, she never even knew his location until he spoke...

She didn't stand a chance at all...it was silly mistake by her engaging him inside his house...
She should have tried to restrain him outside at least

But her saying she liked to win was cringe af...
I don't think she was meant to be a likeable character because she was a terrible person...

But I didn't expect that line for her...
That's why i would still fault the writing. She wasn't just a "desk officer", she was a MI6 agent, a former police officer and a firearm expert, so she was quite equipped for the job. If not she wouldn't have been tasked with capturing a well skilled international assassin.

My point, is that, you can't just build her character like that, only for her to go out like a light, without so much of a bloody fight!...seemed a tad anticlimactic to me, and way to many plot armour to ensure the Jackal comes out unscathed each time.

And i am seeing way too much hate for Bianca everywhere, whilst all she's ever done was to catch an international assassin dropping bodies left, right and center. Her only crime in all this, was she probably overestimated her abilities and underrated the Jackal...Big..Big... mistake.

I've been hyping this show since forever...

Finally someone here decided to watch it.

It's one of the best shows I've ever seen. So many brilliantly directed episodes...

I've seen the show twice...it has some of the best directed episodes I've seen on TV...

There's an entire episode that was shot in a way as if there were no cuts...

Also, Season 4 episode 7 proxy authentication or so is an all-time....
There are even 2 episodes like that

Season 3, Episode 5 "eps3.4_runtime-error.r00". The episode Angela and Elliot infiltrated E. corp during that chaotic protest.

Season 4, Episode 5 "405 Method Not Allowed" The episode Elliot and Darlene broke into that data center to hack it from within....

One shot, no cuts, just brilliant cinematography and direction for those 2 episodes...

I also liked how the episode names were "hacker centric" to keep with the theme of the show...e.g Season 4 episode 4 was titled "404 Not Found"....burst my head fa 😩

Top tier show fr...how did you manage a rewatch? I might eventually give it a rewatch along the line, but for now, make my head cool abeg 😩😅

MR. Robot (S1-S4) (2015–2019)

// Hello, friend. Initiating a system reboot...

I had numerous false starts with this show. The premise seemed like such a clusterfvck that I couldn’t wrap my head around it or, to put it more conveniently, I didn’t have the mental mantle to fully grasp it. But a few days ago, I decided to give it my undivided attention. Right off the bat, I can confidently say this is one of the best shows ever made. It has earned a spot in the upper echelons of the greatest TV experiences I’ve ever had.

At its core, Mr. Robot follows Elliot Alderson, a socially awkward cybersecurity engineer by day who moonlights as a vigilante hacker. Recruited by the enigmatic Mr. Robot, Elliot sets out to dismantle oppressive corporate America, represented by the monolithic E Corp. As the plot unfolds, it becomes clear that this revolution is just a backdrop for Elliot's larger battle......with himself.

On the surface, it might seem like a show tailored for programmers and ethical (or unethical!) hackers.. However, at its heart, Mr. Robot caters to everyone. With its brilliant writing, it explores themes and metaphors that mirror the human condition in profound and relatable ways.

The show examines how corporations hold people hostage, exerting incredible influence over their daily lives. It’s a sobering critique of modern systems of power and oppression. At the same time, Mr. Robot dives deeply into mental health and identity. Elliot’s dissociative identity disorder is central to the story. Mr. Robot, revealed as a manifestation of Elliot’s father, embodies his fractured psyche and coping mechanisms. The series portrays mental health with nuance, showing Elliot’s struggles with empathy and authenticity in a way that feels raw and real.

One of the defining traits of Mr. Robot is its unreliable narration. Elliot’s perspective constantly challenges viewers to question what’s real, mirroring his fragmented sense of reality. The show’s brilliant use of fourth-wall breaks pulls us into Elliot’s world as his confidants. As we watch idly for four seasons, the show makes us complicit, a metaphor for real life, where people often endure mental anguish while the world looks on and moves forward.

Despite its dark tone, Mr. Robot is ultimately about connection. Elliot’s bond with his sister Darlene provides an emotional anchor, while his relationships with other characters add layers of meaning to his journey and the show’s conclusion.

Sam Esmail’s direction and style elevate Mr. Robot into a unique art form. The cinematography often frames characters in isolated corners, reflecting the show’s themes of disconnection and loneliness. Mac Quayle’s electronic soundtrack heightens the tension and perfectly matches the show’s tone. The twists, including the revelation of Mr. Robot’s true identity and the final twist about Elliot himself, are masterfully executed and unforgettable.

Rami Malek delivers a stunning performance, capturing Elliot’s vulnerability and quiet intensity. In a lighter vein, his portrayal was almost too good and one might wonder if this loner and depressed persona mirrors his real life, potentially leading to typecasting. Regardless, Malek’s performance cements Elliot as one of the most iconic TV characters.

I believe no media is perfect, and Mr. Robot is no exception. The pacing in Season 2 is brutally slow, leaving you in a metaphorical "mind prison." It’s easy to feel tempted to drop the show at this point. Additionally, while the character arcs and development are among the finest in TV history, Tyrell Wellick’s storyline though brilliantly written, feels unresolved and leaves much to be desired by the series’ end.

Mr. Robot is more than a story about hacking or societal rebellion. It’s a profound meditation on identity, trauma, and the human spirit. Its audacious storytelling and execution cement its place as one of the most groundbreaking series in recent history.

That said, this is not an easy watch. It goads you, baits you, and challenges your perception of what’s happening. Just when you think you’ve figured things out, the door closes again, and you’re left in a loop of the unknown. Some might even argue that it requires an acquired taste to truly enjoy. But I urge you to persevere, it’s worth it in the end. The series delivers all the answers in one of the most satisfying finales ever.

This is an all-timer. Brilliant, brilliant show. 👏🏿

Man, I swear Spotify has gone to the shitter!!
It just gets worse as the months and years scroll by.

Been struggling to turn off fvvking shuffle off the app since yesterday night. I no know which demon advised me to turn on shuffle last week to get a glimpse of the algorithm and my past liked songs. Now I'm bored of shuffle and want to return to my previous control of my music listening, and I can't!
Me wey I don even forget about shuffle button for almost two years now. I don go fvvk up with my experiment.

Spotify be making the experience worse every time and with this their new stüpid changes and foray into videos and podcasts and being the jack of all trades, They've forgotten what made them gold in the first place chasing what's not there, trying to be YouTube. 🤦🏽‍♂️

Will now be forced to seriously consider another music streamer — YouTube Music probably.
A few months ago I was forced to seriously consider how beneficial Spotify was to me — something I hadn't even thought of for years since I fully ported to streaming in 2021. I watched the TV show RIPLEY and was enamoured by a song in particular by Mina— Il Cielo in Una Stanza. Went to YouTube and watched a video rendition of her song in 50s and the audio quality was really good for something that old. Now I moved to Spotify to permanently put it in my playlist and I could easily notice the change in audio quality. I could hardly hear the bass and rich deep background of the song I listened in YouTube or even the TV show itself.

Searched various versions thinking that particular song had problems, but still the same thing. That was the first time I witnessed first hand the talk about Spotify's audio quality being inferior to other streamers. I've always heard about it over the years but gave no heed to it and thought it's overblown by music sound freaks since most of the audio characteristics won't be heard when you're using normal or basic earphones and airpods. Unless with a dedicated good headphone.

Na that day I know say no be just noise. The song sound uninteresting in my ears listening to it in Spotify as it lacked the feels or texture I felt listening to it on other platforms. I had to personally go and downlöad the song into my phone from two different s!tes to perfectly recapture that feeling and sound cos it was criminally lacking in Spotify.

Dem don spoil Spotify walahi.... If they're not careful, they are losing lots of users with this their continuous changes and the app getting worse and inferior compared to others in some metrics.
I switched to Apple Music awhile back because of the superior sound quality and intuitive user. The richness of sound depth between it and Spotify is so far apart, especially if you are listening with a device that supports Dolby Atmos. But then again, Apple Music is pretty shite at curating playlists, and that's where Spotify shines, The have a playlist for almost anything, and that's why i still stick with them.

But i hardly notice any of the complaints you mentioned, that's because i had hardly update the app, as i have clocked that the newer updates for like 1 year plus now, has ruined the experience for most people. So i would advise, you look for an older version apk, from like earlier this year or late last year, and side load it.

Plus switching to Youtube Music is a double edge sword. Whilst is great at all the things that Old Spotify is good at, if you are not on a premium YouTube plan, the experience is terrible, they have this knack of playing video instead of audio, and you can't switch between the 2, and your music stops, when you exit the app or minimize it. Of course you can grab a modded apk, but Google changes the YouTube API so much these days, that it isn't worth the hassle.

Please before coming to complain about anything concerning TV series, do well to check the genre so you will be properly guided as per expectations.

Why expecting a dystopian thriller to move at the pace of an action gun-fu?

Cross check genre and features particular to each genre before getting into shows
It's not a genre issue. The pacing is hellish. Dystopian shows usually have "interesting and engaging plot points" as they build towards the bigger plot line, at least they keep the viewers engaged and interested in the story. But this Silo, nothing important has significantly happened in 4 episodes, that advances the major plot point, which is Juliette, just a bunch of random squabbles that means absolutely nothing. The show been 90% in confined spaces doesn't help it's cause, gets pretty boring quickly, and they have actually lost me cuz Juliette could pretty much wound up dead at this point and i wouldn't be moved, that's how disengaged i am from whatever the F they are trying to do with this season.

I might just seat out these boring phase, and just see the tail end episodes, not out of curiosity tho. There are just too many good shows going on at the moment who are serious to be bothered with this.

RE: The Day of The Jackal S1 EP 9 (2024)

Is it just me or did this episode had some insane levels of plot armour and devices?

Because for a supposed billionaire who has had an attempt on his life, It would seem UDC had a death wish and with all that money, it seems his security is pretty shite! cuz how is skinny dipping in an open water with, no known perimeter? Anyway i enjoyed the episode still.

But thinking about it now, The Jackal's body count up until this point, is off the charts...he has been dropping bodies left, right and center. I know we are all rooting for him but there is no way in walks into the sunset after all of these, unscathed? except this is one of those rare media where the villain comes out tops which i doubt it is, because of the insane number work they have put into the character development of Bianca.

I am of the opinion that this was better as a one off show, but they went ahead to green lit an S2. So now what? what is the endgame? He has been profiled almost 100% now, and it shouldn't take that long to nab him, so what will the whole of S2 be about? Will he continue dropping bodies whilst Bianca continues the faux cat and mouse game when she has like 90% of the information to nail him? or does he really walk into the sunset after all it's said and done?...... Fascinating to think about but cautious enough to know they might get it terribly wrong....fingers crossed 🤞🏿 ⏳

I know Nigeria's present business climate is in the gutters. But still some multinational companies still find a way to weather the storm. And for a company like Netflix which often pride itself as a global disruptor and leader in VOD, quitting the Nigerian market to me puts more negative light on Netflix. This is a global leader quitting and being unable to compete in an aggressive market. It dampens Netflix image in the African continent if the supposed global leader has no footprint in Africa's most influential entertainment market.
We know how the whole of Africa holds Nigeria's entertainment industry in high esteem. So being absent in that market and not being in an influential position to effect change means it's not really taking African content seriously. Unless it just plans to solely distribute it's catalogue of content from other regions and forego local content in the African sphere. But still, content is King.
It is quite easy to say "weather the storm" from a neautral standpoint but you don't see the optics that they have seen. In economic terms even, This is not what is technically referred to as an aggressive market, an aggressive market would mean, they are in a healthy competition with other platforms to have a larger share of the market, but instead they are battling against crippling inflation as a result of the policies of the government of the day. They wouldn't be the first multi national company to jump ship in recent times, Traditional companies that have existed for years, like GSK, Unilever and co, have abandoned ship, because it was simply not worth it anymore. It is this faux sense of pride of being a leader in this continent that has brought us to this despicable level. Yes, we are the most influential in the Africa Entertainment scene, but how has that translated in terms of real life optics? GDP growth?, How many film schools do have here? How many film villages do we have? How many quality films do we produced yearly? What is the government investment in the sector? What incentives is been giving to outside players willing to invest in the sector?.
If Netflix do decide to cut ties with this hellhole, i bet we will miss them more than they will miss us, because how many active paying subscribers can they actually get from the poverty HQ of the world? 🤷🏿‍♂️.

While SHOWMAX might be an appendage of it's cable counterpart and merely a VOD segment, it's no different from other reputable streaming services from traditional Hollywood studios. Eg, HBO and HBO/Max ain't not much difference going by this logic, cos HBO is basically premium cable while the streamer repurposes similar content albeit with more library for SVOD platform. So it's a non-issue.

Also, you seem to be ignoring the fact that Netflix even grew popular in Nigeria in recent years is cos of its deepening roots with the new wave Nollywood and local content. Of course you as a consumer entrenched in Hollywood probably ain't subscribing to Netflix for Nollywood, same as me, but don't assume that's the same for an average Nigerian family.
We might like to commonise Africa Magic and it's shitty writing and storytelling but that industry is a powerhouse and engine for DSTV's continued survival in Africa asides from exclusive sports rights. The average Nigerian family will definitely prioritise local content over "Oyinbo" content. The fact that the majority of people who can comfortably afford Netflix are in the older generation means Nollywood/local content is paramount. Cos Na only Gen Z and probably some Millennials that you might say are probably not going to be predisposed to African programming.

Disney+ and Prime Video has stopped heavy investments they pushed in Southeast Asian local content spend earlier this year. Netflix has been the only one to benefit from the region and remain in the game. So this is merely a pivot towards profitability.

You also underestimate SHOWMAX. In their earlier years they were not serious with streaming and only pushed it as a second thought to stem against them losing cable subscribers to Netflix. After seeing growth and promise in the VOD segment as well as the continued downward spiral of cable subs due to more growing cord-cutting; Multichoice saw what Netflix was enjoying and rightly forced to invest greatly in VOD and it's been paying off.

Actually SHOWMAX is the leader in VOD subscription in the whole of Africa as well as in Nigeria. It has a larger share than Netflix. SHOWMAX has HBO, and exclusive EPL & La Liga and other sporting rights (even if it's mobile only). Sometime last year it was bolstered by an investment by COMCAST (NBCUniversal's parent) in its streaming business. So SHOWMAX has more content than before with Universal's library.
Netflix don't have this and deep understanding of the African market like DStv do. These people have run aground numerous competitors over the years.
I'm not saying SHOWMAX will kill Netflix but not acknowledging the company is simply not looking into the industry with deep lens.

I don't know where you got your stats from but statistically SHOWMAX is the market leader in Nigeria. And yes like you rightly said they only started a huge marketing push about a year and half ago. Netflix was the leader but was slightly edged out the top spot last year.

For me, if Netflix wants to give a severe blow to SHOWMAX or DSTV, it should invest in picking up sporting rights. Touch that, and you're violently shaking the very existence of DSTV.
From the last data i have, Showmax is behind Netflix and Amazon Prime in terms of market share, so i doubt whether you saying they are a leader in the market, at least in Nigeria, is correct. They attached said Showmax to my DSTV package for free one time, and it totally went to waste...i couldn't see the difference between it and the DSTV, that i was already on. I think where it shines above Netflix is the access to HBO exclusives, but Netflix has a richer catalogue in general.

Live football isn't even a leverage anymore, because i read somewhere that illegal streaming of football matches quadrupled this year, due to the soaring inflation that i have been banging on about. Even the Multi choice, owner of both DSTV and Showmax reported they lost more than 200k subscribers this year alone.

The major points here is that, we have all the ingredients of actually being a first class Nation, like hardly can you find a country as blessed in human and Natural resources as us, but it doesn't translates to decent quality of living because of gross mismanagement that has cut across every sector. If they get the economy working in the right way, An average Nigerian wouldn't be overthinking where his next meal is coming from, but rather which VOD suites him best between Netflix and Showmax, with a filled belly and high quality of living.

If this data is to be taken seriously and credible, then I dare say Netflix will be stupendously stüpid to actually quit the Nigerian market. Cos after SA, Nigeria is the next biggest market. I don't know if this is for actually the entire African continent or data for Sub-saharan Africa. 🤔 Cos I'll expect Egypt and probably Algeria to have good subscribers base too.

With this stats they'll have to stay put and weather the storm, cos I doubt other regions asides SA can even give them the size and scale they want and market share. So it's a tough decision for their planners and marketing department. 👇🏽
The disparity between Nigeria and SA and other African markets is too much. Also take note that they're going up against a very strong SHOWMAX who's a regional stalwart and it's parent company has been in the game of entertainment distribution in Africa for decades and knows the market way better. It's not just going to be a walk in the park for Netflix like it's been over the years in regions where it was a pioneer.

It's similar stiff competition US based streamers are facing with expansion in South East Asia where they have strong local competition.

Anyways, let's wait and see how this unfolds. Amazon Prime has basically thrown in the towel in Africa. Will Netflix be next?
Bruh, I think you are ignoring the elephant in the room still, which is how unfavorable it is to do business here at the moment.

If i am Netflix, i will be totally vexed by those stats, because South Africa hasn't seen even a quarter of the investment in the last few years that Netflix has put here, and yet they have about 7 times, the active subscriber base that Nigeria has, so in a broader context, those numbers are nothing to smile about tbh.

A good economy is felt in every sector, likewise, a bad economy. A larger part of the population here don't have the purchasing power to hold an active Netflix subscription monthly here, and won't for the foreseeable future, it's not a curse, this is just facts, so it will make more economic sense for Netflix to distance themselves from this mess, and seek other markets with kinder settings because last last, you can't outgrind a failing economy.....

And I don't buy SHOWMAX being a factor here cuz those ones just really became a thing about a year or 2 ago, and they don't even have half the market bite that Netflix have here, cuz in a pool of 10 people, i will sooner find 9 people with an active Netflix subscription before i will find 1 with an active SHOWMAX subscription. To put this fact in better perspective, Dstv really geared up drive for SHOWMAX to have a slice of VOD market, that Netflix had already gained ground years prior. The SHOWMAX services are redundant in a way, because they are tied to contents on DSTV, which people are already subscribed to... They offer basically the same content, worse still, they introduced, Dstv Stream, that totally mirrors what SHOWMAX is supposed to be for.. They goofed with that, and i can tell you for free, SHOWMAX has zero threats to any VOD platform looking to break into the space, here.

Somehow I doubt a company as big as Netflix will quit Nigeria of all markets. It'll most likely massively scale back local content and hope for growth.
Netflix for some reason run at a loss for gaining market share in specific developing countries. And Nigeria is a key market in entertainment in anything concerning Africa. It's the hub of African culture.

With Netflix need of wanting to look as the hub of local content, having Nollywood solidly in its arsenal is in its best interests. Reason why I think they won't quit just yet. Unless, a nuclear Armageddon economic event probably happens.

Was about to post something similar like this just now sef. But it seems it's not really the subscription service quitting Nigeria but their local content spend on Nollywood Originals. They are cutting their spend on local content.
Well doesn't bode well for them either ways, if they are scaling back on investment in local contents or if they are pulling their subscription services altogether.

The main reason they were willing to splash cash on local content was to attract a large base of subscribers here which clearly hasn't happened.
