The movie is doomed for failure. Two costars of opposing political views. The ethnicity of the titular character and her controversial comments

I hope they break even
I have never seen a movie built on a foundation this shaky in recent times. First off, One of the main cast that is supposed to be the star power, can't act to save her life. It's like Disney themselves aren't even upbeat about the movie, they cancelled a loud press tour for the movie, and quietly just released it. They choose a Jan-March Slate release window, which is like the worst window, A serious movie that is expected to fetch money, usually has summer, or early winter release.

Plus blockbusters are kinda been creatively bankrupt over the past years and this year might just be the plateau, and Disney are busy burning through their archives to make live actions that nobody really want to see, This particular one, has had several iterations, including live action that could last a life time.

If it breaks even, then it will be a miracle, i personally don't think it will.

Brave new world.

Meh. Just there.

Part of the I can't let a marvel movie pass me by so I watched it.

Literally could have be anything. I didn't feel it at all. The reshoots and rewrites really messed it up.

Bland.
One of my worst cinema experiences in recent memory 😭. 25 minutes in people where already disengaged from it, the guys were streaming EPL, why the ladies were just chatting away. By the end credits, only me and one other guy, remained just to see the post credits scene, which was also bland and met absolutely nothing lool 😩.

Yeah, Marvel is down bad at the moment.

I'm Still Here AKA Ainda Estou AquiI (2024)

Eunice: Martha, you gotta help me. My husband is in danger!
Martha: Everybody's in danger!

I jumped into this despite having no prior knowledge of the subject matter, solely because of all the buzz it was getting.

Set in 1970s Brazil, amidst the sunny beach bars of Rio de Janeiro, the country exists under the facade of a brutal military regime, hell-bent on silencing anyone who opposes them. At the center of it all is the Paiva family, living a hedonistic lifestyle to block out the noise until their lives are forever upended by the very "noise" they were trying so hard to ignore.

This film strikes an emotional chord, and my blind faith in foreign-language films primarily led me to it. I don’t think I’ve seen a bad foreign-language film in the last two years. The Oscar buzz was just the cherry on top.

Fernanda Torres, as Eunice Paiva, was the heart of the movie a poignant performance that deserved every accolade. That’s why it’s all the more surprising that Mikey Madison won Best Actress over her and Dami More in The Substance. They even cast her real-life mother, Fernanda Montenegro, to play an older version of her in one scene a silent yet deeply moving moment, as she gazes ahead with a sense of fulfillment despite the military regime’s efforts to suppress her. Montenegro is an absolute goddess of Brazilian cinema, by the way. She was the first Latina nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars, and with her daughter’s nomination this year, they have become the first Mother/Daughter to be nominated.

And because it was a real life event, after watching the film, I read up on Brazil’s military regime in the 1970s the horrors, the atrocities… Man. A civilian government is simply the best way to go.

A special, special film. But if you like your flicks fast-paced, this isn’t for you...

7/10

Watching succession for the first time. I’m very surprised Brian Cox never won an Emmy for his performance in the series, especially for season 2. Like this man stole every scene involving him and overshadowed every other characters. Don’t get me wrong, the show had great performances from all the characters, but Brian Cox was fantastic.
It was because he was been unsurped by his Children lol. Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong were method acting the hell out of their roles, so much so that they just edged Brain Cox, every time he got nominated.

Generational show btw 💥

I don't even understand the uproar with so many people about this casting..... especially when it's from HBO who has the track record of handling this sort of diversity issue with finesse.

I can very well recall HBO doing this same thing 3 years ago and all hell let loose on the internet.......but the final product having come out this past few years and everyone has already forgotten about the black ensemble cast of the Velaryons in House of The Dragon. This would probably be no different.

Besides, it's a fictional character. Make all this fake rage dié down. I'm not enthusiastic about the casting myself but I'll wait for the final product and judge. They've done it before and it didn't impact the enjoyment of the story rather brought more audience and discussions about the characters.

Also, not all adaptation should be like for like...... looking for copy and paste, you can just as well read the Original. That's the beauty that has brought us varieties we didn't know we wanted like Michael Keaton's Batman, Christian Bale's and Robert Pattinson's. Same character, different iterations and style.

What makes these arguments even ironic to me is the fact that the very authors & creators of these books are very much involved in the projects and okayed the decisions, how much more we the viewers? People cried about Neil Gaiman's The Sandman's De@th being cast as a black yet everyone quickly forgot about this squabble once the TV show premiered.

So, I say, let's give the showrunners the benefit of the doubt and see the finished product.
Except the crux of the matter is just down to the fact of Purism.

My two cents. ✌🏽
likeee!...Well i guess it's the sign of the time. People are generally just angry, anything you do upsets a certain crowd, and people are a short fuse away from been lit and just rage baiting like their lives depends on it. YouTube cinephile commentary pages have not put down their ring light since the casting was made, hustling for views and stream revenue in the guise of been "angry" 😩.

For a fantasy feature, i don't think HBO has committed the worst crime in history...like you said, let the final product come out, and let the lad be judged on his performance and not his skin colour ✌🏿.

I will reply with the utmost respect that you decided not to offer me. I don't need to explain to you OF ALL PEOPLE to prove I'm a die-hard fan - Harry Potter is literally the only franchise I care the most about and I have said it multiple times on this page and it is the only franchise I traveled to a different country to visit its world. You probably have NEVER picked up the books in your life or read a single page. I could write a whole essay on the reasons why it is a bad idea not even because he's black. When the rumour was spreading I was literally the first to say here it could be a good idea since Rickman was too iconic to copy but then I decide to think more about it.
But if they are going to adapt the books with perfection as the producers said, making a black Snape is literally the worst idea possible giving the history of Snape and the insanely bad things he did in the books! No matter how they try to separate the character from his skin color it would always come BACK! That literally destroys the type of escapism the Wizarding World offers. I can't explain further because this will be really long. I can understand your point - you don't see it as anything because you're not attached to the franchise.
The OG of Harry Potter Youtubers (someone you wont call racist as usual) made a video explaining the reasons it is a bad idea, he'll explain than I will hopefully

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9AoECbpTGI?si=IFjzsPohNtwl5Uf8
You literally went hard with your reply like i did the casting, hence i had to return the favour, because if you grab my entire piece, you could clearly see that i was leaning against the casting altogether.

Again, they have made the casting, so just allow. Paapa Essiedu isn't a bad actor, and he has done a fine job in another HBO production in the past. So if he goes on to kill the role, you wouldn't acknowledge or see it, just because he his black? Common on mann....You should be better than this 😩.

Severus is described as having 'shoulder length black hair and a beak nose' which are Caucasians features. Black people have wooly, tightly packed curls, not straight hair, and I am yet to see a negroid individual with a beak shaped nose. She didn't need to infer his race when she has already described what race he belongs to.
They're black people with natural blonde hair and blue eyes in Polynesia recently discovered as early as 3 years ago? I bet you'd also say that was unusual, some 10 years, ago, just because you haven't seen it...The world isn't limited to what you know or what you've seen....No?.

Btw, This is a fantasy medium that is totally imaginary from start to finish, so I don't get the faux outrage because this isn't the first time it is happening, Roland Deschain is clearly white in the "Dark Tower" books and Idris Elba played the role in the movie, and the world went by. For fictional adaptations, there is no rule that says, they must be faithful to the source material.

If they had cast Paapa Essiedu as Ronald Reagan, then all this faux outrage will be totally worth it. Like i said, looks like pandering cuz of the times we are now but it is not the first time... Y'all will be fine ✌🏿

As a diehard Harry Potter fan - all you're saying is full of dog shit. If you dont know anything about a particular franchise just keep quiet. If they are really following the books - the casting is a really terrible idea giving that Harry's father bullied and tormented Snape plus a host of other things i dont have the time to share
Die hard indeed 🤦🏿‍♂️....are you trying to be an obtuse bellend on purpose? Bring out a text from the book since you are a diehard fan, that explicitly say he his white...No? I know Disney takes the cake for the most ridiculous diversity hires but this shīt is up there too.
This argument has 2 sides.

On one side, Tbf, Severus Snape's race wasn't explicitly stated in the source material, and People just came to the conclusion that he was probably white and the movies re echoed this fact.

I think a black broad played Hermione in the stage plays, and J.K Rowling seemed to be cool with it.

On the other hand, The times are so charged up to boiling point because of political, racial and religious tension. People are easily upset, and to make a casting like this, in this time? looks like straight up pandering, even though that might not have been the intent, i mean, you don't dose yourself in gasoline, if you don't want no smoke....
😩

And to the actor, i know it might seemed like a great chance to play an iconic character, but he is about to be called every slur in the book, they might even invent new ones, so much so, that i personally think playing the character, isn't worth the hassle and wanton trouble it will bring.

Paradise (2025).

This was dangerously close to meh.... this close 👌🏿!.

I had a mini break off work this week, and i decided to jump on this because of the high praise it has been getting here, and in hindsight, i would've been totally fine, if i didn't see it at all 🤦🏿‍♂️.

I initially thought it was gonna be "White House Down" esque, but it unsurprisingly just dived into a doomsday, utopia mumble jumble, and immediately, i began to lose interest fast.

The episode one and two was solid, i give them that, they established what i thought would have been a good character arc and plot development, but it all just fell apart in from episode 3, with the plot just running into different directions with zero grip.
It all just became all too melodramatic, they basically just stole the ideas from various doomsday media before it, and tried to mix it all up, and it just came out bland. They put 90% of their cards on the table earlier on, so much so that they had no element of surprise left to hold any sort of suspense, they tried to remedy this in the last episode by throwing in one nonsensical surprise that had almost nothing to do with the story to begin with, they just did it, to elicit some kind of "wow" moment, but it was just blunt, and i was counting the minutes till i was done with the entire thing at that point.

The show runners just dragged this, long enough so they can egg out an undeserving second season, which i am near sure it is going to end in cancellation, because the plot didn't move well significantly past Episode 3, so imagine they have a second season of this horseshït

I wouldn't want to fault those who rated it, highly, because seeing it, one episode per week might have added some kind of intrigue for them, but binging it all at once, i saw the show for what it really is.....a ruse

Now, is it watchable? Yes of course, if you have 8 hours or so to kill, but will you be missing out on anything if you didn't see it....an emphatic, never been so sure in my life, NO!

5/10

The first of WB auteur driven slate couldn't multiply itself enough to get more cash.... 🤦🏽‍♂️
Where they expecting making serious money from it cuz this was always gonna be niche film 👀, the kind of film A24 and Neon would totally make.

I think the euphoria of getting Bong Joon-ho next project immediately after a best picture win got WB to sign on, but this was always going to be a free hit Bong Joon-ho.

Plus apart from the critics unsurprising high praise for it, the streets are saying, the movie ain't all that good, citing writing issues. Even Critical drinker massacred the movie, i still detest his style, but this brother has been so right with his last 5 reviews, and i have an uncanny feeling that he might also be right about this 😭..Only an adverse weather made me not go out last weekend to see it, shifting it to this coming weekend, but seeing all these, i don cancel the plans jor.

If you think the BO returns were worse last year, this year might take the cake, the only movie looking like cracking 1 bill is the new Jurassic World and this is even solely based on past rep, cuz i have an inkling the it isn't going to be good, cuz this franchise, died, narratively like 3 movies ago.

I can't even blame the audience. Movies are failing to draw them to the cinema because quite frankly too many rubbish movies are finding their way to the cinema, the last true proper blockbuster cinema experience personally, was "Dune: Part Two", and that was one year ago!. With movies taking less than a month after cinematic release, to drop on VOD, it dampens the allure of cinema even more.

Cos it's only Nollywood you see that style where high profile movies now use content creators, influencers and singers to boost box office. 😅😅
It's a recent trend with Nollywood flicks. Casting skit makers and musicians in roles they have no business being in, just to elevate the face value of the project.

Forgetting, acting requires a different skills set than the 2 aforementioned....e.g Layi Wasabi in "ELJ", did a little above average cuz truthfully the character didn't require much, but you could easily tell he isn't an actor.

When Harry Met Sally (1989)

The charm of When Harry Met Sally lies in its simplicity. It's not trying to be flashy or overly dramatic, which makes it feel so much more authentic. It gives us a philosophical, comical take on love and friendship, all while exploring the age-old question: Can men and women really just be friends?

It's practically a perfect movie to me. Laugh out loud funny, relatable, timeless, authentic, and incredibly well acted. I'll give it some time, but I feels like it's other there with my favorite films of all time in terms of how much I loved it. I only wish I could watch it for the first time again.

Kramer vs. Kramer (1979)

A story of love, loss and the fight for what truly matters....

There is a certain ambience that comes with watching films from yesteryears devoid of agendas, unnecessary wokeness, unwarranted pandering, or stories you’d forget five seconds after the end credits. No, these films get straight to business, extremely well-written narratives and magical, good old-fashioned acting. And this film is one of those…

Ted Kramer walks in after a random workday, having just landed an important account and a job promotion, bursting with excitement only for Joanna Kramer, his wife of eight years, to drop a bombshell: she’s leaving him and their young son, with no apparent reason at the time...

What follows is a marital back-and-forth, a messy divorce, and a gladiator battle for the custody of their son.

This film is carried heavily by the pungent performances of the cast. Leading the charge was a very young Dustin Hoffman as Ted Kramer a brilliantly written character, with flawless development as the story progressed. He started out as a workaholic middle-aged man, unburdened by the nuances of family life. But as the film went along, his character shifted from an ambitious career man to a single father, no longer fixated on climbing the corporate ladder but instead fighting to be right there in his son’s life. There was a monologue he gave in court during the custody battle that stuck with me, just top-tier acting. No surprise he scooped Best Actor at the Oscars that year.

I think, divorce is such a taboo here, given how it tears families apart, with the children bearing the brunt of it. Many couples would rather stick it out in a loveless marriage, hoping it gets better, than endure the rigors of a divorce.

This was the highest grossing film that year, sweeping five Oscars, including Best Picture. This is what a Best Picture film should look like.
Special… Special… film. ✨

8/10.
